Brose Baskets Bamberg-Artland Dragons 2011 BEKO BBL Cup Preview: Can The Artland Dragons Find Some Of That Darius Hall Past Cup Magic?

36 months ago, the world according to the tiny frog footprint town Quackenbruck which is also referred to as Entenhausen was on top of the world as it had just won their first title the BEKO BBL cup in Hamburg against EnBW Ludwigsburg as the image of fan favorite Darius Hall “the wall” partying with fans in the stands as if all had been invited to his daughters birthday party will probably never be forgotten. With all the excitement and success, The small 13,000 town Quackenbruck which has been known to carry 1600 fans to away games(12%of town population) seemed to feel more like a 300,000 city as they were basking in the glory of finally winning that first title and the only thing missing was having Darius Hall do a special winners dance with Donald Duck who supposedly vacations in the Artland. However in the last two seasons, the euphoric rise of the club built by Marko Beens that entered the BEKO BBL in 2003 has rapidly declined like the endorsements of golf legend Tiger Woods has since his scandal with all his mistresses surfaced. The club has missed the playoffs two years in a row despite strong rosters and not reached the TOP 4 again. However this year, The Artland Dragons are back to the stomping ground that they experienced from 2006-2008, will reach the playoffs and need two wins this weekend against Bamberg and Frankfurt/Braunschweig to bring that second big title back to Quackenbruck. Maybe Bayern Munich coach Dirk Bauermann could give his player Darius Hall a few hours off to possibly transform some of his magic flair from the 2008 cup games in Hamburg to Bamberg this weekend?
Currently the Artland Dragons are in third place behind The Deutsche Bank Skyliners with a record of 20-9. So far the team of Stefan Koch is holding their own near the top. They have had two winning streaks of three games and there only rap could be that they have problems winning against top teams. They lost both times to the Brose Baskets Bamberg, but only with a total combined score of 8 points. Their biggest win of the season was a 78-74 win in Berlin. Despite not being able to beat top teams, the club is one that cant be underestimated. “Artland has been a great team this season and continue to get better each week. They are a team that will go deep into the playoffs”, warned John Bynum.

The Brose Baskets Bamberg Cut The Head Off The Horse Of The Deutsche Bank Skyliners 81-63

The waiting, waiting, waiting and waiting for the big showdown between the Deutsche Bank Skyliners and the Brose Baskets Bamberg to meet had finally come to an end as the last days in Frankfurt had seemed as long as it currently is for fans waiting to see where NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony will practice his scoring soon, when new drama will hit Tila Tequila, the former star of  A shot of love concerning a new scandal tape or when Gloria Giants coach Murat Didin will finally come through with his warnings of bringing in some new players for the stretch run as he has had many players in for tryouts and had them sweating more on the court than straining their fingers for a signature on the dotted line. Not only were the fans eagerly awaiting a battle, but so were the players. “I was really excited to play this game. The first against the second team and this has become a big rivalry with both teams playing each other 10 times in the last two seasons and all the players knowing each other fairly well on both teams”, stressed Bamberg forward Kyle Hines. “We approached the game as a normal game, but inside I was pretty excited. They are a good team that is well coached and I had fun playing”, stressed Bamberg guard John Goldsberry. Kimmo Muurinen showed his iceman qualities with little emotion for the magnitude of the game. “I dont  extra excited about one certain game. It is a routine with the same preparation, but it was great playing in front of a full gym”, commented Skyliner forward Kimmo Muurinen.
The Deutsche Bank Skyliners knew that the game would not be a cake walk and the team and fans probably had the incredible unforgettable Chris Moss buzzer beater in the back of their minds and were prepared for a repeat Mucauly Culkan Kodak moment mouth wide open in shock look from the movie Home Alone against The Brose Baskets Bamberg, but instead had a sad and disappointed Culkin type of look he may have had if he had been stumped by actor Joe Peschi instead of making a fool out of the actor as he did so often in the Home Alone movies. The Brose Baskets Bamberg came out on fire and played very solid for 40 minutes giving Frakfurt their first home loss of the season 81-63. “We started off well and moved the ball very well and got open shots and hit most of them. We have so many guys that can hit 20 points each night except of me off course”, joked Bamberg guard John Goldsberry.

Can The Deutsche Bank Skyliners Spring A Leak In The Well Oiled Brose Baskets Bamberg Ship February 5th?

Fans in Pittsburg will only have had two weeks to dream and get ready for The Super Bowl, while fans of the Northsiders Chicago Cubs have been waiting and waiting and waiting for 103 years to hoist a World Series crown and Mr Spiderman actor James Franco only has 30 days to prepare an imagery acceptance speech and wait to possibly hear his name called as the 2011 Oscar winner for best actor for the flick 127 hours, but the Deutsche Bank Skyliners also have been waiting for some sweet revenge after their early season loss in Bamberg and have been plowing by BEKO BBL teams in the Ballsporthalle as if they have been slush rather than heavy compact crust snow, but February 5th has been marked on many calendars as Frankfurt attempts to defend their home unbeaten streak and seek payback against the three time BEKO BBL champion Brose Baskets Bamberg. This game is the highlight of the current season as the two top teams of the BEKO BBL will battle and see who has made more strides on the court in the last months. A game like this has to bring out a tad more extra energy for the players. “It is always tough coming into top games and you always come out a bit more hyped. As a player you try to settle down a bit and just go in and do what you always did, because at the end of the day you have been doing it for so long and it should be natural once you step on the court and the ball is thrown up. My most difficult game had to be the national championship game that I played my senior year at Metropolitan St. (NCAA2). It seemed like the night of the game would never come. Even when I was warming up it seemed like time was standing still. As for the anxiety, once the ball went up, it was all gone, but it was tough waiting”, stressed TBB Trier guard John Bynum. The game against Bamberg will showcase the one millionth patron in the Ballsporthalle since the birth of the club in 1999 and possibly will that lucky million person be a Skyliner fan and give the team luck.

Albakiller Reloaded: Bamberg dominates Alba Berlin

Ever since both teams met in the 2003 BBL Finals Bamberg vs Berlin is a BBL classic. In 2004 Frankfurt won the BBL championship but it was Bauermann’s Bamberg that ended Berlin’s championship reign from 1997 – 2003. The fans from the capital city share a big rivalry with the basketball freaks from Franconia and no other win could be sweeter than one against the biggest opponent.

If you ask experts about the teams that could face each other in the finals this year I guess most people will bet their money on Bamberg and Berlin. While Bamberg is still undefeated in the domestic league, Berlin has re-built its roster and still has to work on some aspects. Pavicevic’s team looked pretty competitive in games against Bonn, Frankfurt and Oldenburg. But the game in Bamberg should finally prove if the new Berlin team is on par with the reigning champion Bamberg. But after a close first quarter (18:17) Alba Berlin was simply destroyed by a almost perfect playing Bamberg squad. At the end of the game one had to look twice at the scoreboard. 103:52!

A loss by 51 points???

This was Alba Berlin’s biggest loss in 21 years of team history!

Gruebler talks: Check out the Euroleague Adventures Podcast!

As I mentioned in the about section a must-read for all basketball fans in germany is the blog gruebelei.de. Unfortunatly the texts are written in german. So if you cannot read any german or your not totally comfortable with the translators you can find on the internet you will not get too much out of it.

But if you’re sick and tired of reading anyway (whatever language it is) there is a nice way to hear a real expert talk about the german basketball scene. Henner Schlaefke aka Gruebler joined forces with Euroleague Advantures and talks for more than half an hour about german basketball in english!

Gruebler mainly talks about the early Beko BBL season. He calls Bamberg ‘the team to beat this season’ and especially reflects on Alba Berlin’s chances. Later he talks about Bayern Munich’s huge basketball project and what Germany’s league must do to elevate to the status of elite.

Anton Gavel Pulls Out His Magic Wand As The Brose Baskets Bamberg Slip By The Deutsche Bank Sklyiners 71-62

After suffering a humiliating 85-58 loss in the Champions Cup 18 days ago, The Deutsche Bank Skyliners wanted to escape the memory of this Bamberg offense firing range the same way the Miami Dolphins did losing 62-7 to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2000, the 1988 Baltimore Orioles losing their first 21 games in a row or the Miami Heat losing 148-80 to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1991 which could of started fans covering their faces with bags and Frankfurt were a lot stronger than their last visit to the Steckert arena, but had their usual woes not being able to get by the 2010 BEKO BBL champion in the fourth quarter as they gave up a 16-2 run which was fuelled by three straight drawn fouls by Anton Gavel to end the game losing 71-62. Frankfurt has only won once in Bamberg in almost six and a half years and might have had that same feeling as actor Mickey Rourke was having when he was finally going to have success again all those years prior to the Wrestler movie being a success. “We knew coming in that this would be a very difficult game. Frankfurt was banged up in the first game and came back a new team with two new players and more confidence. They fought very hard and we won, but it wasn´t easy. The way Frankfurt came back to play better in this game from that 27 point loss last time was like a boxer who lost that first round, but came back in the next fight with more motivation to prove that they are better than their last loss. The whole Bamberg/Frankfurt history and the fact that they played each other so many times in the last year reminds me of the great rivalry of Ali and Joe Frazier”, stressed Bamberg American Kyle Hines. It was obvious by the fierceness of Frankfurt that they wanted to make amends for the Champions Cup loss. “The players had talked about the Champions Cup and were all disappointed, but didn´t want to dwell on that loss to much, but just be focused and I think that we showed that we could compete tonight and almost won”, added Skyliner Canadian national player Jermaine Bucknor.

With 51 Rebounds And The Two Bucks(Buckman/Bucknor) The Deutsche Bank Skyliners Are Ready To Rock The Brose Baskets Bamberg And The Jako Arena October 13

The Deutsche Bank Skyliners basketball past in Bamberg in the last six seasons has been about as desolate as the 2007-2008 Oklahoma Thunder where they lost a franchise record 62 games, tennis pro Marat Safin losing 129 Grand Slam matches in a row before reaching a Grand Slam final or the sad demise of lovable actor Mel Gibson who was more in the headlines for his phone affairs then for his critical acting this year, but who is making an acting comeback with The Beaver, and How I spent my summer vacation soon. At times it has seemed that there has been some kind of curse on the Frankfurt club like there had been on the Boston Red Sox for 86 years and still is on the Chicago Cubs who have not won a World Series in 102 years as  2,186 days had gone by from 2004-2010 for The Deutsche Bank Skyliners not winning a game in Bamberg between game four win in 2004 and the First game of the final in 2010 as the long drought was finally broken as it was old coach/new coach Gordie Herbert that was able to win again in game one of the 2010 BEKO BBL finals 65-63. Since this thrilling win, The Deutsche Bank Skyliners have had little luck losing the next three games on the road in Bamberg including game five and the 2010 Champions Cup and being outscored 254-180 in the last three games in the Jako arena. 18 days ago, The Deutsche Bank Skyliners suffered a humiliating 85-58 loss in Bamberg in the Champions Cup, but were as handicapped without center Joe Dabbert and Quantez Robertson and only one true big man with Marius Nolte like as if one small tiny sweet cat was surrounded by five hungry lions, The Boston Celtics had to play without the GAP trio of Garrnet, Allen and Pierce or character Ethan Hunt of the Mission Impossible getting through life unhurt without his slick gadgets. This time, Frankfurt travel to the pretty Bavarian city with their Bucks(Buckman/Bucknor) in their baggage, plus 51 rebounds from the ugly Duesseldorf win and about as much self confidence as former president Bill Clinton has when he is out on the town. Frankfurt had to deal with the Duesseldorf sixth man Murat Didin on Sunday and now four days later have to deal with the Bamberg sixth man their fans. “It is tough playing in Bamberg. The fans are so much into the game. It reminds me of when we played at the University of Dayton. It was sold out and loud each time. It is tough to say if the Bamberg fans are their sixth man, but for sure when you play the Artland Dragons”, joked Phoenix Hagen American Quentin Pryor. Frankfurt can only pray that the game is as quiet as at the Champions Cup, because at times one could of heard the cash registers in the supermarket basement.

Kyle Hines(Brose Baskets Bamberg): My Role Is Bring Energy Play, Strong Defense And Provide Rebounding

Kyle Hines is a 24 year old 198cm power forward from Sicklerville, New Jersey that is playing his first season with the Brose Baskets Bamberg. He is a powerful player who loves to attack the basket. Has a good 1-vs-1 game and likes to go inside. He is undersized to play the power forward, but his great wingspan (7-1) allows him to guard taller players and to intimidate. He’s also a great leaper and reads the opponent’s game well  He played at NC-Greensboro (NCAA) from 2004-2008. In his senior year, he played 31 games: 19.2ppg, 9.1rpg, 1.4apg, 1.8spg, 3.1bpg, FGP: 55.6%, 3Pts: 12.5%, FT: 62.8%. He was invited to play at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament (Pre-NBA Draft): 3 games: 17.3ppg, 7.3rpg, 1.3apg, 2.3spg, 3.3bpg, FGP: 78.6%, FT: 72.7%. He then had predraft workouts with Sacramento Kings and the Charlotte Bobcats (NBA). He played NBA Summer League in Las Vegas (New Orleans Hornets) in the summer of 2010. He took some time to talk to  German Hoops about the current season.

You are playing your first season in Germany for the Brose Baskets Bamberg. Was the main reason for coming because the team is playing Euroleague?
It was one of the main reason I wanted to play in Bamberg. To have the opportunity to play against the top competition in Europe is something that I’m definitely looking forward too.

Can The Deutsche Bank Skyliners Win Their First Title In Bamberg After Failing In 2005 And 2010?

A fifth game final two point loss compared to a Champions Cup final game is about as different in meaning as Lebron James playing in a Lakers uniform than in a Heat uniform, The USA mens national team winning against a team with five Kobe Bryants than against the Turkish national team or Paris Hilton taking an Iberia commercial flight from Los Angeles to Madrid rather than lear private jet, but a game is a game and for The Deutsche Bank Skyliners winning anytime in Bamberg is like winning a lottery even if it is only a meaningless preseason game. Frankfurt play Bamberg in the Champions Cup on Saturday and enter the game with an 8 game winning streak and with their confidence as sky high as 20 Sears towers in Chicago staked on top of each other. Frankfurt lost two finals to Bamberg last season including a bitter fifth game final by two points and a cup final and some players like Pascal Roller, Dominik Bahiense De Mello and Grayson Moyer may have the two games in the back of their heads, but for the new players like Carlos Powell, Dashaun Wood or Kimmo Muurinen, it will just be another game. “Game 5 was a very tough loss for the players. One or two free throws made and the game might have been different. I think this is a game that no player will ever forget. I wont forget it. Frankfurt must win the Champions Cup”, stressed ex Skyliner Dragan Labovic.
