Can The Deutsche Bank Skyliners Spring A Leak In The Well Oiled Brose Baskets Bamberg Ship February 5th?

Fans in Pittsburg will only have had two weeks to dream and get ready for The Super Bowl, while fans of the Northsiders Chicago Cubs have been waiting and waiting and waiting for 103 years to hoist a World Series crown and Mr Spiderman actor James Franco only has 30 days to prepare an imagery acceptance speech and wait to possibly hear his name called as the 2011 Oscar winner for best actor for the flick 127 hours, but the Deutsche Bank Skyliners also have been waiting for some sweet revenge after their early season loss in Bamberg and have been plowing by BEKO BBL teams in the Ballsporthalle as if they have been slush rather than heavy compact crust snow, but February 5th has been marked on many calendars as Frankfurt attempts to defend their home unbeaten streak and seek payback against the three time BEKO BBL champion Brose Baskets Bamberg. This game is the highlight of the current season as the two top teams of the BEKO BBL will battle and see who has made more strides on the court in the last months. A game like this has to bring out a tad more extra energy for the players. “It is always tough coming into top games and you always come out a bit more hyped. As a player you try to settle down a bit and just go in and do what you always did, because at the end of the day you have been doing it for so long and it should be natural once you step on the court and the ball is thrown up. My most difficult game had to be the national championship game that I played my senior year at Metropolitan St. (NCAA2). It seemed like the night of the game would never come. Even when I was warming up it seemed like time was standing still. As for the anxiety, once the ball went up, it was all gone, but it was tough waiting”, stressed TBB Trier guard John Bynum. The game against Bamberg will showcase the one millionth patron in the Ballsporthalle since the birth of the club in 1999 and possibly will that lucky million person be a Skyliner fan and give the team luck.

The Brose Baskets Bamberg have a huge advantage over most of the other 17 BEKO BBL teams in that they have kept a core of their team. This season Bamberg has kept many teams off guard with not just one style of play. “We can play a multitude of different styles. We have players on our roster that can do everything. The style we play depends on our opponent and style of game they play. We will always be able to tailor our game to match the opponent”, added Bamberg forward Kyle Hines. It seems like Bamberg have no weak spot at any position. “We are a strong team and have depth at every position with a number of players being able to play multiple positions”, said Kyle Hines. But the biggest strength of the Brose Baskets Bamberg is something that every team in basketball any where on earth strive to have. “We simply play team basketball. We have developed a chemistry in a short time. There is no player on this team that is looking for individual stats. Each guy is interested in trying to do what is best for the team to have success”, warned Kyle Hines. The Brose Baskets Bamberg started off the season so hot winning their first 17 games in a row that it seemed like talk of an undefeated season was not a far fetched idea. However the Gloria Giants Duesseldorf proved that anything is possible in the BEKO BBL as they upset Bamberg 72-69. “A season is long and tough and it is really tough to go undefeated at anything. One should not forget that Bamberg played very many games already”, stated John Bynum. They have blown away most of the competition with ease holding teams to under 70 teams 17 times. They average 83 points per game and have only built on the strong team chemistry that was already present early in the season. “Bamberg seem to get better with each game that they have played. The Euroleague games also have helped them get better”, added John Bynum. Despite the strong play of Bamberg and that teh second half of the season is always tougher than the first half, this could still be an advantage for some more upsets. “In the second half of the season, teams are able to see more of a pattern of play of their opponents and know more about each individual player by film and other things that they didnt have in the first half. After playing a team once, you are better at evaluating things better and you can also see them play against teams before you as well”, said John Bynum.

The Deutsche Bank Skyliners have a massive negative record on the road in Bamberg going six years without a win until last summer where the club of Gordon Herbert won in game one 65-63. In the Ballsporthalle, The Deutsche Bank Skyliners have a 2-6 record since the 2005-2006 season. Who could forget the embarrassing 81-48 loss in 2007 which was the last game for Skyliner coach Charles Barton. Last season, the club won twice winning in the regular season 84-80 as the team was led by American point guard Aubrey Reese with 18 points. They won a second time last season in game four with a 69-56 win sending the 2010 BEKO BBL finals back to Bamberg as Alba Berlin American Derrick Allen led the charge with 19 points and seven  rebounds. In the first meeting this season, The Brose Baskets Bamberg were able to pull out a hard fought 71-62 win as they rallied from being down 60-55 and ended the game with a 16-2 run. Anton Gavel led alls corers with 19 points and Reyshawn Terry added 15 points. The Deutsche Bank Skyliners were led by Dashaun Wood with 15 points, but he steered only two assists. Brad Buckman and Jimmy Mckinney chipped in with 10 points a piece. Bamberg was able to shoot over 40% from the field and outside while Frankfurt didnt have the touch from the three point line at only 29%.
So far every team in the BEKO BBL except for The Gloria Giants Duesseldorf have prepared somehow for The Brose Baskets Bamberg, but come up short. Bamberg have so many positives in their game, but do they have any visible flaws? Bamberg is such a deep team that they can bring in anyone at anytime an dnot loose much at any position. If I had to pick a spot and by no means are they weak, I would have to say that they have a lot of tweeners at the 3-4 spot and not a true four man and size down low for bigger bodies, but as everyone can see, they are doing fine”, stressed John Bynum. The number one focus for every opponent of Frankfurt is Dashaun Wood which is no different than teams that run into the Lakers and Heat and need to annoy Kobe and Lebron. “Bamberg has to control Wood in transition and in the early offense. Frankfurt has a lot of weapons, but you need to make another player make the plays and keep the ball out of the hands of Wood and have other players do things that they arent comfortable of doing”, added John Bynum. Frankfurt will have to find success against the uncomfortable Bamberg defense. “Frankfurt has to play their game and not let Bamberg take them out of their sets and start from 25 feet and out. Bamberg pressures the ball so well and deny the lanes all the way out to the half court. Frankfurt needs to execute on offense and take Bamberg out of their offensive sets”, warned John Bynum. Jacobsen, Hines and Suput might be their most important players, but never underestimate their guards. “Frankfurt has to attack them at all times because they are very tough. They have to be aggressive and attack their guards at all times. Dont let them get in a flow, but disrupt them”, warned Phoenix Hagen guard Mark Dorris. The players for both teams will be in game mode on February 5th, but it never hurts to bring in some pre game humor from a neutral party. “Frankfurt needs to use a baseball bat to beat them so it hurts”, laughed Erdgas Ehingen German Ruben Spoden. Frankfurt wil have to play without ex NBA player Roger Powell who suffered an injury in practice this week. The Deutsche Bank Skyliners host three time BEKO BBL champion Brose Baskets Bamberg on February 5th at 17:05.
