Brandon Spearman is a 24 year old 190cm guard playing his second season in Germany in the Pro A for the Gladiators Trier. He started his basketball career in 2010 for Dayton(NCAA) where he played 36 NCAA games. He then moved to Indian Hills CC (JUCO) and finished his last two seasons at Hawaii (NCAA) and as a senior played 26 games averaging 11.2ppg, 4.4rpg, 1.2apg, FGP: 57.8%, 3PT: 33.0%, FT: 52.8%. As a rookie last season in Germany he played for SC Rist Wedel (Germany-ProB) playing 18 games: 17.1ppg, 4.9rpg, 1.8apg, 1.4spg, FGP: 54.8%, 3PT: 41.0%, FT: 64.0%. He spoke to German Hoops after the 72-65 win against the Finke Baskets.

Congrats Brandon on the 72-65 win against the Finke Baskets. After taking a step back from scoring in the second and third quarter where Trier scored 25 points, you found your team scoring touch in the fourth making 28 points. What adjustments did the team make in the fourth quarter?

Well we did a little adjusting not a lot. We was down heading into the 4th. So we had to make plays and that’s what we did to turn the game around. It was a tough win in a great environment. We stuck together and came out with the win.

The Gladiators Trier were trailing up to mid way in the fourth quarter, but how key were the back to back three pointers from German Benedikt Breilling and yourself?

Bene is a great shooter and he always makes big shots when we need them. Bene is one the best shooters in the ProA. We have a well rounded team anybody can hit big shots when it’s needed as you can see with my 3’s and bene 3’s but anyone on this team is capable of doing the same.

The Gladiators Trier closed out the game with a strong 6-0 run as the team hit clutch free throws. What was key on the defensive end for you to stifle Paderbron in the last minute closing out the game the way you did?

On the defense end we wanted to maintain that pressure on them. Our defense converted into some really good offense.

How satisfying was it winning a close game after losing the first two games by a combined score of seven points?

It feels great, winning is always great doesn’t matter if we win by 1 or 50. The last two previous games were toughf games that we could of won. The ball just didn’t drop for us. But it’s okay it’s early in the season and we will see those teams again also will be ready it’s a long season.

The Gladiators Trier are 2-2, but could be 4-0. What expectations do you have of this team? The Pro A is very competitive, but what can the team achieve?

We have high expectations. Reaching the playoffs in and reaching ProA finals that’s what we aiming for and everyone on this teams have the same expectations.

The playoffs are a good possibility, but is a title a reach this season?

Playoff is definitely something we expecting towards the end of the year. Like I said we have high expectations here in Trier. We have what it takes to make a great run in this league for the title.

After the first two loses, how do you feel has the team improved over the last two weeks?

Those losses are just motivation for the next game. We have been improving every week and it’s just going to continue. Marco is a great coach and he will have us ready.

After four games young German Benedikt Breilling leads the team with 9 three pointers. Do you see him taking on even more of a scoring role as the season progresses?

Well Bene is a great shooter like I said he also can create for himself. Anything is possible Bene is a hard working player.

You were top scorer with 21 points and have scored in double figures in all four games. You seemed to have had no problems adjusting. What has been the biggest change coming from the Pro B to the Pro A?

I’m still learning and wanting to get better every year. Having the role to lead had always been something I’m comfortable with I’m just going to keep leading and let the game come to me. Well I feel I can play at any level. I’m still learning and coach Marco is doing a great job at teaching me.

The team has some talented Americans, a few experienced Germans and the rest younger inexperienced Germans. Do you see yourself as the main go to guy and leader or a guy that wants to share this with guys like Dwayne Evans, Eric Anderson and Kevin Smit?

We have a great team here in Trier we have younger guys and also experienced guys. Dwayne and Eric are big contributors to the team and we need them to play big minutes for us. So on with the rest of the team Kev, Alex, Simone when they get healthy. All are great leaders that played in enough games to lead and help us get to the post season.

After four games you know that every week will be a hard challenge on the court. What things are you working extra on after practice on your game that will help you get even more potent on the court?

Coach is always going to get us ready for the next opponent. Every day we workout. I’m doing my same routine every week. Individual work, extra shots, weights. I like that same routine. But I’m working hard every day like its still the summer and that’s what’s I love. It’s always good to have to that extra edge on my opponent.

Derrick Rose is injured again. It seems like there is a curse on him. Do you ever see him playing through a season?

Derrick Rose is going to be just fine injuries are part of the game. People need to let up on him. He is a great player. He is a former MVP of the NBA this guy can straight ball. I see him playing a lot this season and him helping my Bulls get to the eastern finals and hopefully to the NBA finals. So he’s going to be fine. I’m expecting him to have a great season.

After coming from the flat area of Wedel, you now live in the pretty hilly area of Trier. What do you like most about your new home?

Wedel was a great town but I am loving everything here Trier not one thing I don’t like about this place.

What was the last movie that you saw?

Mad Max.

In the three games that Nordlingen have played in the BCM in Frankfurt, before this weekend they have left the building twice as losers including the last two times and it has never been boring, but high scoring affairs where the Fraport Skyliners Juniors always had the upper hand. Two years ago, Frankfurt got the better of Nordlingen winning 95-87 as Johannes Richter had a huge game with 23 points and future German national player Johannes Voigtmann had 14 points and 11 boards. And almost three years ago on also the second home game, fans saw a thrilling overtime affair as Frankfurt won 101-96 as Konstantin Klein had 26 points, Danilo Barthel 18 points and Johannes Voigtmann 14 points. Interesting to note there was also a supporting cast in both games as then younger Tim Oldenburg had 10 points in each game and Max Merz chipped in with 17 points. Now Oldenburg is older and wiser and slipped into one of the main scoring attractions together with the BBL experienced Max Merz this season. Not only is Oldenburg still around, but also both head coaches Eric Detlev and Mario Matic who face each other again after a year break where Nordlingen had to play itself back to the Pro B in the Regionaliga. Matic came back to Frankfurt with a very solid group of guys led by the American duo of Brandon Lockhart and Jordan Talbert while Frankfurt went into their third game with no import, but all Germans and a whole lot of heart as they always do looking for their second win while the ex BBL team who played in Germany´s top league in 2008-2009 were looking for their third victory of the young season. However a late fourth quarter comeback by the Fraport Skyliners Juniors propelled the home team past the Giants Nordlingen 73-71 with a game winning shot by German Tim Oldenburg. After the game the police man in the making Oldenburg was as calm and humble in conversation as he was making the bucket something one also needs in his future job as keeping one´s cool with a criminal can be the difference between life and death. For once it wasn´t Merz that dished him the perfect pass, but 17 year old Garai Zeeb, but the German knows and always needs that point guard in his game. “We knew at the end that if we wanted to win we had to defend better as Nordlingen was getting way to many easy baskets in the game as we couldn´t compensate it on offense. Max Merz played a big role in the comeback as did Niklas Kiel under the boards. We had many young guys in the game and the leadership and experience of Merz really helped. We were the more effective team at the end and just rocked. I have never been a player that had the big post moves, but I need to have that point guard. I live off the point guards”, smiled Fraport Skyliner forward Tim Oldenburg. Nordlingen seemed in control in the fourth, but gave up a 13-5 run at the end and just choked allowing Frankfurt back in the game and winning. “We had the game won, but gave it away. We didn´t communicate on defense and were unable to contain Merz and they took advantage of it. They finished the game and we didn´t, it is as simple as that and they had the confidence to do that”, stressed Arkansas native Jordan Talbert.

The Fraport Skyliners Juniors jumped on the Giants Nordlingen off the bat going on a 7-2 lead as they had that aggressive hunger early getting their offense in rhythm as Max Merz opened with a pull up jumper which was followed by a trey from 2014 NBBL rookie of the year Niklas Kiel and German Michael Fuss followed with a steal and dish to Kiel for the hard two handed dunk. However this quick start didn´t stifle Nordlingen as they cut the Frankfurt lead to 11-9 as St Louis native Brandon Lockhart scored inside twice and ex MLP Academics Heidelberg guard Janek Schmidkunz displayed his knack of shooting with a three pointer. Frankfurt kept the lead with a Kiel dunk after a no look pass from Oldenburg, but couldn´t contain Schmidkunz as he dropped his second trey in a row cutting the Frankfurt lead to 14-12. Frankfurt then got some much needed burst of spark from 17 year Gari Zeeb as he finished with a floater and then got Oldenburg his next put back with a perfect inbounds pass as Frankfurt led 18-12 with a minute to go. However the Giants Nordlingen closed out the first quarter with a lightening 9-3 run to dead lock the game at 21-21 after 10 minutes. The Giants were sparked by the fine play of 17 year old Moritz Trieb who played his first Pro B game with 15 years as he came up big making a beautiful cross over past Zeeb and nailing a floater and then following with a lay and German Chris Reinhart made a tip in closing out the 9-1 run. 16 year old Isaah Negron then closed out the first quarter with a nifty floater after freeing himself from two defenders tip toeing between them. After 10 minutes the Fraport Skyliners Juniors were shooting 64% from the field and 100% from outside while the Giants Nordlingen were shooting 50% from the field and 67% from outside. Frankfurt had the 8-4 rebound edge, but seven turnovers while Nordlingen had four turnovers.

The second quarter was the quarter of runs as Nordlingen started off with a 10-0 run which prompt was followed by a 9-0 Frankfurt run. The Nordlingen offense was cooking as it was fortified by two three pointers by Talbert and Fabian Bruetting and a lay in by big Man Jan Petrovcic from Slovenia as the guests had quickly turned the score rapidly to 31-21. However the Fraport Skyliners Juniors never lost their cool or nerves as they raced back into the game with a 9-0 run cutting the Nordlingen lead to 31-30. The run was led by Tim Oldenburg who stayed faithful to my nickname Mr put back as he hit free throws, threw home a dunk after getting the perfect dish from Kiel and then made a put back after grabbing an offensive rebound. 17 year old German Konstantin Schuebert helped hitting a runner. Nordlingen then went on a 7-1 run to lead 38-31 as American Brandon Lockhart who played in Slovakia as a rookie scored in bunches scoring on a coast to coast run scoring over Merz and then scoring again on the fast break after Talbert got a steal. Bruetting then ended the run with a lay in high off the glass. Frankfurt took a last time out and then it was up to experienced Beko BBL player Merz to make the right decision and did waiting for the right timing finding Oldenburg back door for the reverse lay up, but Nordlingen held on to the lead 38-34 at half time. “Nordlingen did a good job pressuring Frankfurt and forcing turnovers which led to easy buckets for them. We weren´t executing on offense or getting good shots”, expressed Fraport Skyliner guard Quantez Robertson. The Fraport Skyliners Juniors were shooting 50% from the field and 14% from the three point line while the Giants Nordlingen were shooting 38% from the field and 40% from the three point line. Frankfurt had the 19-16 rebound edge, but had 13 turnovers while Nordlingen had seven turnovers.

In the third quarter, both teams stepped it up more on defense playing more aggressive, but the Giants Noordlingen were still able to execute better on offense and shoot at a higher percentage and held the lead through out the quarter. Max Merz continued to dominate on offense making a lay in and free throws while Niklas Kiel cleaned up under the basket, but Frankfurt still trailed 41-37. Nordlingen then sped on a 5-0 run as Talbert made a step back jumper and Bruetting nailed a three pointer as Nordlingen was once again broke away leading 46-37. Kiel then drained a mid distance jumper, but the Giants always had an answer as Petrovcic hit a mid distance shot and Schmidkunz a jumper as Frankfurt trailed 50-43. Then came another great span for 16 year old 185cm guard Isaah Negron who again displayed his amazing foot work getting by two defenders and then releasing a quick floater which hit nothing but net and then made a jumper as Frankfurt trailed 50-45. Trieb then played like an older player than what his 17 years show as he calmly made four free throws as Nordlingen led 54-47. Frankfurt closed out the third quarter with back to back buckets by the big men Kiel and Oldenburg inside as Frankfurt still trailed 54-49 after 30 minutes. “We lost our rhythm on offense. We continued to fight, but weren´t consequent. Nordlingen is a good fast break team and whenever we missed shots, they took advantage of it on the break”, stressed Fraport Skyliners Juniors head coach Eric Detlev. “We came out with more energy in the third and played team basketball”, expressed Jordan Talbert. The Fraport Skyliners weres hooting 47% from the field and 8% from parking lot while Nordlingen was shooting 37% from the field and 31% from the parking lot. Frankfurt still owned the boards 28-25, but had 16 turnovers while Nordlingen had nine turnovers.

In the fourth quarter, the Giants Nordlingen seemed to have enough to win as they continued to foil any attempt of Frankfurt trying to regain the lead, but totally fell apart in the last two minutes allowing the home team to turn the tide and get the victory. After Talbert and Kiel traded buckets, it was Oldenburg that hit a jumper closing out a mini Frankfurt 4-0 run as they cut the Nordlingen lead to 56-53. However Nordlingen did a great job working for good shots and then being effective and making shots whenever Frankfurt threatened getting closer as Bruetting made a runner and then the fearless Trieb hit a huge three pointer as Nordlingen led 61-55. Frankfurt then was hit with their fifth team foul with 5.29 to play and thier chances continued to get worse, but they never lost hope continuing to chip away at both ends of the court. Fuss then connected on a giant trey to cut the Nordlingen lead to 62-58, but Reinhart then made a lay in getting a no look pass from Lockhart and holding the 64-58 advantage. Schmidkanz after being cold for a few quarters rediscovered his touch again hitting from the parking lot extending the Nordlingen lead to 66-60. Frankfurt then slowly did some real comeback work getting even closer as Merz closed out a pretty floater after displaying perfect cross over foot work and then made a free throw as Frankfurt trailed only 66-63. But Nordlingen then once again rammed a dagger through the Frankfurt comeback attempt making a small 4-0 run as the two Americans Talbert and Lockhart took advantage of Frankfurt mistakes scoring inside extending their lead to 70-63. Nordlingen 125 kilo forward Kwame Duku described the BCM gym and atmosphere like in a dream and in the last two minutes it seemed like the team was not in a dream, but nasty nightmare as they gave up a 10-1 run to lose the game 73-71. Merz hit back to back free throws and Frankfurt trailed only 70-67. Fuss then forced a turnover which led to another Oldenburg put back as Merz once again made the right decision and pass to find the German as Nordlingen suddenly only led 70-69. After a Talbert free throw, it was Kiel that hit clutch free throws to dead lock the game at 71-71. The big 207cm forward Kiel then made a huge block and Frankfurt had possession. This time it wasn´t Merz, but Zeeb that made the big pass from inbounds finding Oldenburg inside back door muscling home the put back with three seconds to play. Lockhart made one last desperation shot from behind the center line, but missed. “We got into the head of the opponent. We did a good job pressuring all positions. The difference was that we played together and got big plays from Fuss and Kiel. On the last play we had many options and were looking to get Merz the ball, but Nordlingen left me open and finding me was the best option for Zeeb. The last basket had more to do with the Nordlingen defense making the mistake than our offense making the play”, stressed Tim Oldenburg, “We didn´t communicate well on defense at the end and just felt to comfortable that we would win. Merz did a good job finding the bigs. We know that we still have to work on things and have a lot of potential to get even better”, warned Jordan Talbert. “Our defense and fight saved us tonight”, added Eric Detlev.

The Fraport Skyliners Juniors were led by Tim Oldenburg with 24 points and seven rebounds. Niklas Kiel added 18 points and 13 rebounds while Max Merz with 16 points and six assists. The Giants Nordlingen were led by Jordan Talbert with 14 points. Fabian Bruetting added 13 points while Moritz Trieb had 12 points. Janek Schmidkunz and Brandon Lockhart contributed 10 points a piece. The Fraport Skyliners finished the game shooting 47% from the field and 13% from outside while the Giants Nordlingen shot 37% from the field and 27% form outside. Frankfurt won the rebound battle 39-31, but had 20 turnovers while Nordlingen ahd 12 turnovers.

Jermale Jones is a 28 year old 186cm guard from Birmingham, Alabama that is playing in Luxemburg this season for Black Star Mersch.He started his basketball career in 2005 for Lawson State CC (JUCO) where he played until 2007. He then played two more years at Tuskegee (NCAA2). In 2011-2012 he came to Germany and played for SSV Lokomotive Bernau (Germany-ProB) playing 18 games: 17.5ppg, 2.0rpg, 1.7apg, 1.2spg, FGP: 45.6%, 3PT: 36.4%, FT: 79.2%. In the 2013-2014 season for Lich he played 24 games averaging 18.5ppg, 3.6rpg, 1.3apg, 1.3spg, FGP: 46.9%, 3PT: 35.7%, FT: 76.2%. Last season with Lich he played 28 games: 16.4ppg, 2.9rpg, 2.3apg, 1.4spg, FGP: 47.0%, 3PT: 35.9%, FT: 83.7%. He spoke to German Hoops about this season in Luxemburg.

Jermale thanks for talking to German Hoops. It took a long time until you got signed, but your playing outside of Germany this season with Black Star Mersch. Did experience and faith once again help you get through the summer?

Yes it took a lot of Faith to keep me going this summer. I know with my experience I would get signed even if it took some time. Players get released daily and some clubs just want experienced guys to carry a young team.

You are not far away from Germany in Luxemburg, but has the fact sunk in yet that you aren´t in Germany this season and actually earning a living somewhere else?

Yes it has already sunk in that I’m not in Germany anymore but it’s nice to play in another country and live somewhere new.

Do you see more people speaking French or do you hear the German language also?

Most people that I have ran into speak French but the German language here is a bunch of slang words put together.

Between you and I, it is obvious you could of played for any Pro B team and even helped out a Pro A team had you just been given the chance. Are you slowly understanding and realizing the older you get the harder it is getting a job in Germany?

Well I had a few ProB offers but the offer wasn’t what I was looking for & with a Pro A team I didn’t have not one look which I feel very terrible about because they wouldn’t even give me the opportunity or at least a tryout contract. To me it’s really not about the age it’s about who you know in the business.

Black Star Mersch have started at 1-2. You are the main import player with American Mike Oppland. What has been your first impression of the N-2 league?

My first impression of this league is that it’s not too strong. I remember when playing in Lich 2 years ago we beat a Luxembourg team by 25+. So I knew instantly coming here what this league was about.

To what German level would you compare the N2 league to? This should be a league where you will really be able to do something big for your stats.

I would compare this league to all the low ProB teams and the top Regionalliga teams. Yes in this league I’ll have really huge stats and the teams depend highly on their import players.

Do you see yourself being able to improve your game at this level?

Yes no matter what level you play on you can get better in every aspect of your game. Working on weaknesses is the key.

Ate the age of 28 you are in the best basketball age. You scored 38 in your first game and are averaging 25ppg through three games. Do you see this season as a stepping stone to getting back to a higher league?

Yes, I see this season as a stepping stone to work my butt off and improve and get back to a higher league. Sometimes you just have to take the long route to get where you want to be.

How has it been playing with American Mike Oppland who´s brother Dan plays in Nurnberg? I guess you both will probably score half of the teams points this season?

It’s great playing with Mike. He’s a hard worker. He is a great team mate and he’s also a great person off the court. He’s always looking for ways to help people. Me and Mike will have to take full responsibility for scoring on our team with high leadership roles to carry the young guys on our team.

This weekend you will play against American Karl Moore who played at Saarlouis last season and scored 57 points last week. Is he a guy in the same boat as you playing in way too low of a league?

I don’t think me and him are in the same boat.My situation is completely different from his.

Your buddy Martinis Woody also found a team after waiting almost as long as you finding one and will play in the German Regionaliga with Karlsruhe PS. His determination and will to play is still very high. Do you see him having a big year?

I’m so happy about Woody finding a job because he deserves a chance. He has showed what he can do. Me and him are kind of in the same boat. We are not giving the opportunity to show what we can do at a higher level. But we don’t let that get us down. We just keep pushin. He will have a great season and help that team move up.

Is there a curse on Derrick Rose? He is injured again? Do you ever see him playing through a season?

I don’t know what’s going on but every time the season is about to jump off he gets hurt.. But I have to give it to him because he’s a warrior. He has been through a lot with injuries and he remains positive and staying hungry.

When will you make your first visit back to Frankfurt? Your front row seat will always be free for you?

You might see me Sunday at the Frankfurt game sitting in my favorite seat.

Brandon thanks for talking to German Hoops Congrats on the solid 2-0 start into the season. You registered a big 88-79 win at home against Lich. The week before Lich gave up only 39 points. Did you sense possibly too much self confidence on their part?

Not too much self confidence on their part. I just think that we played well early and were able to keep a good distance from them on the score board. It also helped that we were playing at home.

Nordlingen scored 88 points and showed stable early season fire power. Was the offense the biggest strength on the night in the win?

Yes, we have a bunch of good offensive players, so I believe that will be the strength for us many nights.

Nordlingen is 2-0 now. How has the team developed best in the last weeks that has given the club the well deserved 2-0 start?

We played well through the preseason and have gotten better each game. We are just continually learning what players do best in practice so that when the games come, we give ourselves a chance to win.

The club has averaged 80 points in the first two games and given up 72 points. What potential do you see this team having this season? Will it be able to score in the 80´s while keeping teams to near 70 points?

Hopefully we just end the game with more points than the other team, LOL. But we have a bunch of offensive weapons, so I think we have the potential to be a high scoring team.

To have success in the Pro B, it always depends on the quality of the imports and how well the German role players play. Does Nordlingen have the right mix to be a consistent strong team this season?

I believe that we do! Majority of our players can do more than one thing really well. Therefore, its hard for other teams to key on just 1 or 2 players.

The club is playing a thin rotation at the moment. Do you feel any pressure like you have to have amazing games each night? How well do you handle and accept pressure?

No, there is no pressure to have to be amazing each night. We play as a team, so that takes the pressure off of all of us. I have no problem accepting pressure, especially basketball pressure because I have been in many pressure moments throughout my career.

A big surprise is that an American isn´t the leading scorer, but German Janek Schmidkunz. How impressed have you been by his play in the early going?

It’s no surprise that Janek has been doing what he’s doing because I have been watching him daily at practice. He is a really good shooter which opens up more space for the rest of his game.

Could this be the best 1-2 point guard duo in the Pro B this season?

I feel that we could be a really good backcourt duo. It’s a long season but both of us will go into each game confident about what we can do.

How important has your relationship been to the other American Jordan Talbot on and off the court?? Was the tour of the city quick considering its so small?

It’s really important because he played here last year. So he knows the club and city a little better than I do. We instantly connected since we are the Americans here, so that also helped make things easier. LOL, it was a really quick tour of the city since it’s so small. But I like it!

After a strong rookie season with BK Levicki Patrioti (Slovakia-Extraliga) playing 34 games: Score-5(16.7ppg), 3.8rpg, Assists-5(4.3apg), Steals-1(3.0spg), FGP: 50.2%, 3PT: 28.5%, FT: 78.9%, you now play in the German Pro B. Is the Pro B a step behind what you saw last season skill wise?

Since we are only 2 games in, its really difficult to tell.

What memories do you have last season of American Lakeem Jackson who played at Iskra Svit and now is playing in the German Pro A this season with Cologne?

I remember him being a tenacious rebounder and a matchup problem for most teams. His size makes him a tough person to guard.

You are a scoring guard that can also find his teammates at any time, but what is a hidden strength in your game that doesn´t get noticed right away?

Probably defensive anticipation. I feel that I am really good at getting into passing lanes and help position on defense.

You had an illustrious college career at Drury(NCAA2) topping it off with the NCAA2 title in 2013. What is the most vivid memory of this fantastic time in your life?

Tough question because there are a bunch of memories from that year. I would probably have to go with seeing all the different emotions on/off court right after we won. Many in tears because they were just so overwhelmed with positive emotion.

How did Steve Hesser prepare and groom you best for a professional basketball career?

By not giving us many rules and telling us that we need to be responsible men wherever we were. Overseas, you are on your own a lot. So you have to be able to distinguish right from wrong because nobody will be there to clean up after your mistakes for the most part.

Who was the best player that you played against in the NCAA2 that is in the NBA now?

I played against a bunch of really outstanding players at the NCAA2 level. Braydon Hobbs is probably the best overall player I played against. I do not believe he had any NBA opportunities but he is playing in the Germany BBL this season.

Who won a one on one in practice you or Alex Hall?

HAHA we never played one on one during our days at Drury. But if we played now, I think I have the advantage since I spend more hours in the gym than he does.

Coming from St Louis, what stories do you know about Vashon high school player Jimmy Mckinney that has had a long career in Germany?

Once he left for overseas, I did not really keep up with him that much. I only know that he has been quite successful over here.

What is the state of Lebron James in 2015. Will he ever be mentioned in the same breath as a Michael Jordan?

I think he will be great again this year but like last season, they will not be my pick to win it all. For me, no, because MJ is my favorite. But I also just think that we need to appreciate LeBron while he is playing because who knows when we will see someone do the things he is capable of doing.

Jordan Talbert is a 24 year old 198cm forward from Little Rock, Arkansas that is playing his second professional season with the Giants Nordlingen. He came to Germany as a rookie last season and played with the Giants TSV 1861 Noerdlingen (Germany-Regionalliga) playing 26 games: 21.6ppg, 9.6rpg, 3.2apg, 2.0spg, Blocks-4(1.5bpg), FGP: 51.7%, 3PT: 28.9%, FT: 78.4%. He played his college career at Missouri SO(NCAA2) from 2010-2014 and as a senior played 31 games averaging 11.7ppg, 7.4rpg, 2.9apg, 1.1spg, 1.7bpg, FGP: 44.8%, 3PT: 37.0%, FT: 70.1%. He spoke to German Hoops before the game against the Fraport Skyliners Juniors.

Jordan thanks for talking to German Hoops Congrats on the solid 2-0 start into the season. You registered a big 88-79 win at home against Lich. The week before Lich gave up only 39 points. Did you sense possibly too much self confidence on their part?

No I don’t think they were too confident, I think we came out with a lot of energy early in the game both offensively and defensively and it really caught them off guard. Being our first home game we were really motivated to make a good impression.

Nordlingen scored 88 points and showed stable early season fire power. Was the offense the biggest strength on the night in the win?

I believe that our biggest strength is our versatility. Our offense can score a lot of different ways with different people. Against Lich Janek shot the ball extremely well so we made sure to look for him whenever it was possible.

Nordlingen is 2-0 now. How has the team developed best in the last weeks that has given the club the well deserved 2-0 start?

Our team chemistry has developed extremely well to start the season. We understand in order to play at a high level we have to play well together. What the team needs comes before what the individuals want and it’s really showed in our play.

The club has averaged 80 points in the first two games and given up 72 points. What potential do you see this team having this season? Will it be able to score in the 80´s while keeping teams to near 70 points?

I really have no expectation for how many points we score or allow the other team to score. I know that we have the ability to score and there will be games when 80 is not enough. I also know that there will be games we can’t make a shot and 70 points will be too much to allow. Will we have to find ways to win both games and I think we can.

To have success in the Pro B, it always depends on the quality of the imports and how well the German role players play. Does Nordlingen have the right mix to be a consistent strong team this season?

Well I’ve only seen a few teams in the pro B league but from what I’ve seen I do believe we have the talent to compete with any team if we come out and play our game. It will be very important for us to stay healthy and to stay playing as an unit.

The club is playing a thin rotation at the moment. Do you feel any pressure like you have to have amazing games each night? How well do you handle and accept pressure?

No I don’t feel any pressure to have an amazing game each night. We have enough good players on the team to cover one another if one of us is not playing so good. I believe I handle pressure really well. I think that pressure games are what makes you a great player and in those pressure moments I feel that I raise my game and focus in order to make sure our team gets the victory.

A big surprise is that an American isn´t the leading scorer, but German Janek Schmidkunz. How impressed have you been by his play in the early going?

I’ve been really impressed by the way he’s shot the ball but I’m not surprised. Practicing with him I know how good of a shooter he is. So it’s important for players like Brandon, Fabian, and I to put pressure on the defense and force them to help so he can get a good look at the basket.

Could Brandon Lockhart and he become be the best 1-2 point guard duo in the Pro B this season?

I really think that they both or dangerous players and will earn the respect from each team that we face this year.

How important has your relationship been to the other American Brandon Lockhart on and off the court?? Was the tour of the city quick considering its so mall?

I think our relationship off the court has really helped us on the court. We spend a lot of time around each other and have developed a good friendship which I hope continues to grow even past this season. Yes the tour was very quick. This being my second season here I showed him all that I could but that didn’t take very long at all.

You tore up the German Regionaliga last season with Nordlingen averaging 21.6ppg, 9.6rpg, 3.2apg, 2.0spg, Blocks-4(1.5bpg), FGP: 51.7%, 3PT: 28.9%, FT: 78.4%. What has been the biggest adjustment now playing in the Pro B?

The biggest adjustment I’ve had to make is switching to the Molten style basketball. I’ve never played with this kind of basketball and I much prefer a Spalding or Wilson. I’m still getting used to shooting with it but eventually I think I will grow to like it.

On what things on your game do what to make the biggest strides with this season?

I want to continue to become a more consistent shooter and become more effective in the post.

You really fill up the stat sheet and can do so much with your size, but what is a hidden strength in your game that doesn´t get noticed right away?

Offensively, I think that I’m a pretty good play maker not just for myself but for my teammates. I believe I have good court vision and passing ability to hit my teammates when the defense collapse on me. Defensively, I think that my versatility and my communication is something that doesn’t get noticed. I can guard different positions and I love it when I’m matched up against the other teams best scorer. Communication is such an important thing on defense for everyone to be on the same page so I’m constantly talking letting my teammates know what to do and where to go.

How has your relationship with head coach Mario Matic grown since day one in Nordlingen? Will you have as much freedom this season as last?

I think me and Mario have a great relationship. I made sure to earn his trust and respect with my play and effort last season not only in games but in practice also. He has giving the same responsiblity to me this season and continues to show a lot of confidence in me.

You won the MIAA tournament in 2014 to close out your college career at Missouri So(NCAA2) in 2014. What is your most vivid memory of achieving this great feat?

My most vivid memory was celebrating with the team and fans after we won. We worked extremely hard to get to that point, and to come out on top when no one thought we could but us was extremely full filling.

How did head coach Robert Corn prepare and groom you best for a professional basketball career?

Coach Corn did so much for me during my 5 years at MSSU it’s hard to even put into words. But what he did best for me was just being himself off the court. I have a vivid memory of coach, during an away trip the weather was terrible with a mix of rain and snow. We just arrived to our hotel and all of the players ran to check into our rooms. I remember seeing coach help our trainer carry his equipment inside, in the rain and snow, when he could’ve easily told one of us players to do it. He showed me what is to be a man whether it’s with family, friends, or colleagues and I think that’s more important than everything he taught me basketball wise.

What was the most amazing thing that you remember ex teammate Marquis Addison doing in a game or practice who now is playing his second professional season with Horsens IC (Denmark-Ligaen)

I remember Marquis having incredible performances all throughout our time at Southern, but the most amazing thing I remember about him was his work ethic. He treated every practice as if it were a game and that intensity is something that echoed throughout our team each and every year.

Who was the toughest player that you battled in college that is in the NBA now?

DeAndre Jordan, was the toughest. He completely shut down the paint to where we had to shoot jump shots the entire game and there was no chance of getting a rebound over him.

What is worse running into a cow on an open field in Nordlingen or teammate Kwame Duku? What have you respected most from his game?

I haven’t run into a cow yet but I have run into Kwame in practice and I still have the bruises to prove it. What I respected most from his game is that he actually has a lot of skill. He’s not just a big body he knows how to play the game which is just as important as his HUGE size.

What were the most free throws that you made in a row without missing?

I think in the game I went 12 for 12 last season. In practice I think I made 25 in a row before. Crazy thing is I was never a good free throw shooter. Coming into college I shot less than 50%. It’s just something I continued to work at over time.

What is the state of Lebron James in 2015. Will he ever be mentioned in the same breath as a Michael Jordan?

I think Lebron is still the best player in the world right now and will have another great season. I think he will always be compared to Jordan but the fact he’s lost 4 times in the Finals I don’t think he will ever pass him. Plus the players in the NBA are getting better and better so the window to pass Jordan is closing fast. But he will still have an incredible career even if he doesn’t pass Jordan.

You studied to become a dentist in school. What is something that you learned about dentistry that really made you go hmmmmmmmmmmmm?

I learned that the human body starts making your teeth before you are born. They only begin to show several months after birth. I also learned the you canine, incisors, premolars, and molar teeth all have specific purposes when it comes to eating. Some are specifically designed to cut, tear, or grind your food.

He started his basketball career with Central Hoops Berlin (Regionalliga) in 2008. He then also got further experience at ALBA Berlin II (Regionalliga). He then went to the states and played at Amer.Internat. (NCAA2) from 2010-2014 playing a total of 86 NCAA games and as a senior played 26 games: 10.9ppg, 2.1rpg, FGP: 38.5%, 3PT: 38.9%, FT: 61.5%. Last season as a rookie he played for MLP Academics Heidelberg (ProA): 21 games: 1.4ppg, He spoke to German Hoops before the game against the Fraport Skyliners Juniors.

Thank you. I think Lich made some noise with their win against Frankfurt the week before, yet I don’t think they underestimated us. I think in our first two wins we had the right game plan that helped us beat those two teams.

Yes, I think that we found the right balance between scoring and getting stops when we needed to. But it is early in the season and I think we are yet growing as a team and each game will help us play better basketball. The thing that we did well in Dresden and were able to pull off at home against Lich is coming right out the gate with high intensity and making shots right away. This was huge to not only send a message to the other team, but also helped us get the crowd into the game at home, or out of the game in Dresden.

Nordlingen is 2-0 now. How has the team developed best in the last weeks that has given the club the well deserved 2-0 start?

We play team basketball. We understand each other on and off the court and there is a sense of team spirit within Nordlingen that I haven’t had in any of my teams in years. This makes it a lot easier for us. We play with confidence not only because of that but also due to Coach Matic’s coaching style.

We will have to wait and see. I have no doubt that the potential is there. Yet, we will have different approaches to each game we play. I know for a fact though that Coach’s past teams were always remembered for a strong offense.

To have success in the Pro B, it always depends on the quality of the imports and how well the German role players play. Does Nordlingen have the right mix to be a consistent strong team this season?

So far it has proven to be the right mix. We have a really experienced captain in Fabian Brütting who has played on all levels in Germany. Then they were able to keep the core of the team that got them back into the ProB which was huge. Jordan Talbert has left a big mark in the Regionalliga last year and I have no doubt that he will have another strong season. And Jan Petrovcic, as our third import, gives us great energy of the bench that has been hard for opponents to handle. Also the additions the club made paired with the young talented players we have here gives us a really solid foundation to have a successful season. For now, it is our goal to get into the playoffs.

A big surprise is that an American isn´t the leading scorer, but that you are. Are you surprised at the moment by being the teams top scorer?

I am not surprised at all. I think that it could be any other player on this team as well. And there will be nights somebody else gets it going and everyone will be happy – as long as we come out on top of course. But as I said, we play team basketball and having different players that will contribute is just one of our biggest assets.

Could Brandon Lockhart and you become be the best 1-2 point guard duo in the Pro B this season?

So far it’s been great playing alongside Brandon, but let’s not forget that we play small ball and have Fabian out there as well. So maybe we need to make this a backcourt trio?

How impressed have you been by 17 year old Moritz Trieb? How much potential does he have and how do you help his game in practice get better?

I give him some advice here and there as I was in his situation once in my life. The kid is fearless of any challenge and has such a will and motor to play the game, which is exactly what we need of him. His energy level is probably not matched by any of us in terms of his aggressive style of play. And he is getting better and better as he plays big minutes for us.

What exactly is your role on the team. Do you see yourself being able to score consistently simply because most teams will key in on the two Americans?

I think if I continue to score as I have, it won’t be because of teams focusing on others but rather that we find each other on the court. We don’t go out there to get our share of points each. We go out there and know the only way we can be successful is playing together. So I give lots of credit to my teammates. In terms of my role, I am trying to set an example and embody coach’s style of play. So far I was able to be somewhat of a vocal leader as well trying to keep us together on the court.

How much freedom does head coach Mario Matic give you?

A lot, yet we know what he expects of us and we play within his expectations. So far we haven’t disappointed him therefore he didn’t need to change much in terms of the freedom he gives us as a player.

You will battle two fine point guards in Max Merz who has BBL experience and Garai Zeeb. How excited are you for this challenge?

I think it will be a good game and I am excited for that. I am going be as excited for this game as for any other game though.

You had a difficult rookie season with MLP Academics Heidelberg (ProA) last year. What were you able to learn from your rookie season last year?

Work hard! I mean even though my role wasn’t as big last season, I came to every practice and game and worked my ass off. And eventually it pays off. I think a lot of my play has to do with my confidence level here in Noerdlingen, but also I think I improved as a player during the ProA campaign.

How important was a Marco Grimaldi in your rookie season. What was the most important thing that you were able to learn from him on and off the court?

Very important. I think having a Marco Grimaldi on the team is big for any rookie. He continuously talked to me and helped me out while still battling with me every day in practice. Unfortunately, he got hurt half way through the season and me shortly after.

Now you took a step back to play in the Pro B. Do you still see yourself developing further and making the next step to a higher league down the road?

I mean, developing further is always the goal. It wouldn’t be right to be satisfied with who you are as a player. I always want to get better, so that when it is all said and done, I will not feel any regret. Specifically, it is always important to find new challenges. Right now I found a great one here in Noerdlingen playing in the ProB. So currently, I am not giving it too much thought. Who really knows what will come in the future.

Have you ever ran into a bigger body that Kwame Duku? What do you respect most form his game?

I respect his hard playing style the most. He is ready to sacrifice his body for the team at any time. He creates a great atmosphere on and off the court. And it is a joy to have him around. Especially being a small team, we are going to need Kwame and currently we are hoping that he recovers quickly from his injury. Unfortunately, I have actually ran into Kwame during practice before, and OUCH.

What is the state of Lebron James in 2015. Will he ever be mentioned in the same breath as a Michael Jordan?

Well when is he not mentioned with MJ? LeBron is without a doubt the best player there is right now. With Michael being the best of all time, it is only right to compare the best of now to the best there was. But personally, I go with MJ.

Thanks Jake for talking to German Hoops It was -1c in Loimaa tonight. Have you already gotten used to the earlier colder temperatures in Finland?

The weather hasn’t been too bad so far. I used to live in Colorado so its nothing new for me.

It was nice watching you play again as I saw the second half of the Bisons opening VTB game against Khimki Moscow. That was a tough opponent to have in the opener. The Bisons lost 81-62 as the Russian team controlled the game. In the fourth quarter you cut it down to as much as 13 points. Was the experience and skill factor of Khimki just to much to handle?

They were a very physical team and they just forced us out of our plays. They are a top team in Europe.

Right in the first game you had to deal with many ex NBA players like Tyler Honeycutt, James Augustine, Paul Davis and Alexy Shved. Was this one of the main reasons for coming to the Bisons for being able to duel week in and out against the best?

Being able to play in the VTB was a big reason. An extra 30 games in the season to play against some very talented teams. It was definitely a big factor.

Alexy Shved led all scorers with 20 points. He really filled up the stat sheet. What will the team have to do better next time to limit him more or is that almost impossible?

We didn’t do a good job communicating and rotating on defense. They have a number of guys on their team that can take over at any point, but we have to be able to contain them to a certain extent if we want a chance to win at the end.

There are many talented teams in the VTB and the competition level is very high. What is the main goal of the team going into this competition? Just to go out each night and fight, fight giving every team hell and hoping for some to underestimate you?

We want to compete every night. Last year this team was 3 wins away from the 8th seed in the VTB playoffs. We don’t want to just come out and participate in the game. We want to win and we want an opportunity to make the playoffs.

The Bisons won their first game in the Finish Korisliiga against Helsinki 82-70 where you were the leading scorer with 21 points. After moving up from the second division the team won the Korisliiga title two years in a row. How high are the expectations to win and how good are the chances with this team to mix it up with the best teams?

The Bisons are always considered a championship contender. Its championship or bust here. That is our mentality. We have a good group of Americans and Finnish players that we feel we can accomplish that

The club seems to added the right mix with Americans Martin Zeno, Justin Jackson and Mario Edwards. Did your first game production give you an added sense that you might be able to be more of a scorer than in other years or do you see this being a team where the top scorer could be 1-5 different guys each night?

The leading scorer role will change all the time. We have a lot of weapons that can score. Our strength is getting out and running and we have a lot of guys that do that well.

After playing for coaches like Ingo Freyer, Doug Spradley and Gordon Herbert in Germany you now have Greg Gibson. He played some years in Germany in the late 90s and has been a coach in Finland since 2003 winning titles. What kind of relationship do you have with him and what coaching traits does he have that you haven´t seen from the other three guys in Germany?

Coach and I have a very good relationship. Each coach has their own personality traits, but all coaches shared the same mentality of wanting to win, wanting to compete, and wanting to get the best out of you.

Your ex team Fraport Skyliners won a magnificent game in Bremerhaven giving up only 59 points despite being without Danilo Barthel and Johannes Voigtmann.Today came the unfortunate news that Joe has to be operated on and Konstantin Klein will miss three weeks. After being operated on your back what words of encouragement do you have for the German national player Voigtmann?

Joe is a tough kid. He will be back quicker than the expected timeline. Sporeg is a great rehab facility and they will have him and Konsti back very soon.

In the game against Helsinki you played against a fellow named Mike Myers. Even when one is highly focused in a game does a name like that get you thinking for an instance about the actor from Waynes World?

Actually never even thought about it until now.

What I always wanted to know. Who hits more three pointers from the corner with 10 trys you or Mikko Koivisto?

Mikko. He is the only guy that has my number in shooting competitions.

What was the last movie that you saw?
