In past years winning streaks for the Fraport Skyliners have been as minimal as it is for a Shaq ever having the audacity to attempt a three pointer, Steph Curry not taking a three pointer in a game or a Blake Griffin refraining from a clear dunk, but this season the 2004 Beko BBL champion Fraport Skyliners have been in winning streak mode as currently they are in their second one of the season. Earlier in the season the 2000 cup winner won 13 games in a row in the Beko BBL and Europe Cup until 8 time Beko BBL champion Alba Berlin squashed their winning ways with a win in their living room and then Frankfurt had a dry spell losing three of four games including in Ulm and Bayreuth, but something changed over the holiday season. They have come into 2016 with a new winning streak as they have won their last six games. Maybe it was some new type of spice in their Christmas turkey or perhaps the players talked about their new years resolutions, but one thing is for sure, winning streaks come and go, but one thing hasn´t changed and that is their immaculate play in Europe Cup action where they are 9-0 and came to Sweden looking for their 10 win in a row. In the first meeting on December 15^th in Frankfurt, the Fraport Skyliners whipped away the Swedish team 95-64 as they were led by the German twin towers Johannes Voigtmann and Danilo Barthel who combined for 43 points and the club had six players in double figures. Frankfurt who averaged giving up only 64 points in international play were looking for another fantastic defensive performance, but didn´t get it, but their offense shined as bright as the sun reflecting off the snow on a barren field in Siberia as the Fraport Skyliners put up 95 points in the win while Sodertalje scored 81 points. With the win the Fraport Skyliners not only remain unbeaten in 2016, but currently have a seven game winning streak and remain unbeaten in Europe Cup play at 10-0. The Fraport Skyliners were able to withstand a late fourth quarter surge by the Sodertalje Kings by finishing the game on a 19-13 run and take the victory home and seal a berth to the next round as a big motivation booster as they face the EWE Baskets Oldenburg on Sunday as a win will give them an automatic ticket to Munich for the Beko BBL cup Top 4 at the end of February. “We were able to win tonight because of our defense. We took them out of their offense on the defensive end and executed on offense. We were very efficient tonight. A complete team effort”, stressed Jordan Theodore. “It was a tough game for us. Frankfurt came out and shot the ball very well. They punished every mistake that we made the entire game. I was proud of my team for coming back and fighting in the second half though”, stressed Sodertalje guard Skyler Bowlin.

The Fraport Skyliners quickly found their touch early in the first quarter taking the early 7-3 lead. German national player Johannes Voigtmann got Frankfurt on the board first with an easy lay up totally baffling ex Regal FC Barcelona II 201 cm big man Nicholas Spires with his twists and turns. Frankfurt got added input from Quantez Robertson who got hot quickly with a three pointer and Englewood, New Jersey native Jordan Theodore fed Canadian national player Aaron Doornekamp for the lay in. Sodertalje then broke free and went on a 5-2 run to cut the Frankfurt advantage to 9-8 as ex BG Leitershofen guard Skyler Bowlin hit an impressive step back trey and the American then found Spires inside for the easy lay in. However once Frankfurt has found a steady offensive rhythm, they are prone to be able to get into the zone as a team and just take off and did totally overwhelming Sodertalje going on a 13-0 run to extend their lead to 22-8. In the run, the Fraport Skyliners got potent support from Quantez Robertson who continued his hot shooting nailing a three pointer and scoring inside while Voigtmann made a hard two handed dunk on the fast break getting fed perfectly from Philipp Scrubb, and Doornekamp and ex George Mason center Mike Morrison scored on transition. This magnificent run was sparked by the always aggressive Frankfurt defense as they got 4 consecutive steals that all led to buckets. After ex CAB Madeira (Portugal-LPB) center Aaron Anderson made a basket inside, Frankfurt closed out the first quarter strong as Quantez Robertson hit three pointers three and four with the last being a buzzer beater as Frankfurt led 30-12. The Fraport Skyliners were shooting an incredible 87% from the field and 100% from outside while Sodertalje was shooting 36% from the field and 33% from outside. Frankfurt had the 6-3 rebound edge and three turnovers while Sodertalje had seven turnovers.

In the second quarter, the Fraport Skyliners continued their offensive show continuing to control the game despite a slow start as they were able to get more easy points while the Swedish team was forced to work extra hard for their production. Sodertalje got off to the better start in the second frame going on a mini 4-0 run as three time Swedish champion Toni Bizaca hit free throws and big man Spires found ex BK Ventspils guard Davis Lejasmeiers for the lay in cutting the Frankfurt lead to 33-16. Ex Seton Hall guard Jordan Theodore hadn´t been a factor at all to that point scoring wise but he did a super job as he conducted the game as the point guard, but just didn´t get any shots until now where he made his first basket with a lay in. Despite this bucket, Frankfurt lost it´s rhythm from the first quarter as the Sodertalje Kings went on a 6-0 run to cut the Frankfurt lead to 35-23 as Sodertalje spread the production around as Spires made a tip in, Bizaca showed his athletic ability making a nifty fingertip roll lay in and ex Liege Basket guard Dino Pita hit a three pointer. Despite German national player Danilo Barthel being out, there was that physicality factor missing, but Frankfurt still was big enough to do what they wanted to inside. When Frankfurt needed points, their best bet was to bang it inside to get easy points as Doornekamp and Voigtmann finished strong extending the Frankfurt advantage to 42-26. Despite some timely three pointers from Bowlin and Lejasmeiers, the Fraport Skyliners went into halftime on a 12-3 run once again finding their offensive sharpness to lead 54-32. Scrubb who started the season at AEK Athens (Greece-A1) hit three free throws and Robertson hit a trey and Doornekamp made two. The Fraport Skyliners may have reached the arena in -10c, but their shooting was as hot as the Indian ocean as they were shooting a ridiculous 77% from the field at 20/26 and 75% from the three point line while Sodertalje was shooting 38% from the field and 50% from the three point line. Frankfurt had the 14-9 rebound advantage and had nine turnovers while Sodertalje had 14 turnovers.

In the third quarter, the Fraport Skyliners held on to their lofty lead, but couldn´t totally put Sodertalje away as they continued to hang around like an unwanted black fly does when you hit it a few times, but it still doesn´t go away. Sodertalje started the third quarter inspired going on a 8-3 run to cut the Frankfurt lead to 55-40. Despite a Theodore three pointer, Sodertalje rattled off eight points as feisty back up point guard Mike Joseph showed his quickness going coast to coast for the lay in, Anderson made a difficult tip in scoop where the only thing missing was the ice cream cone, ex Davidson(NCAA) guard Chris Czerapowicz hit free throws and Pita snuck inside for a bucket. Sodertalje was playing more aggressive on defense forcing Frankfurt to mediocre shots and were attacking more inside instead of settling for the outside option. Frankfurt got production from Theodore as he looked very controlled finding Voigtmann for the crushing two handed dunk and then finding space to connect on the step back jumper for the 59-42 lead. It was a game where Theodore really picked his spots and was very strong knowing when to finish and when to find his teammates. The -10c outside seemed not to bother the hot shooting of him and the team that he conducted. “I’m not sure the -10c had anything to do with it but I knew in the second half my team was going to need me to step up. I rarely look to score in the first half. Tez, Aaron and big Jo paced us in the first half. They were knocking down shots and dominating inside. So when the second half came. I knew it was my time to take over the game”, stressed Jordan Theodore. Sodertalje didn´t achieve any real lulls on offense continuing to stay in the game as Czerapowicz hit a trey and Mike Joseph free throws. Theodore then snuck inside again scoring easily while Morrison fed Voigtmann with the extra pass via the lob as Frankfurt led 66-47. Spires continued to be the work horse battling inside and more often than not coming away with rebounds and a put back as he scored and also hit free throws as Sodertalje trailed 68-52. In the last minute Morrison made a dunk and 2015 University games silver medalist Konstantin Klein made a lay in as Frankfurt led 72-54. The Fraport Skyliners continued to shoot out the lights as they were shooting 73% from the field and 70% from the parking lot while Sodertalje was shooting solid at 42% from the field and 40% from the parking lot. Frankfurt had the slim 19-15 rebound edge and 14 turnovers while Sodertalje coughed up the ball 15 times.

In the fourth quarter, the Sodertalje Kings made a late surge, but the Fraport Skyliners closed out the game in style. Sodertalge came out in the fourth quarter on fire showing the Fraport Skyliners that they meant business going on a 14-4 run to cut the Frankfurt lead to 76-68 and perhaps getting a new spec of grey hair on the scalp of Frankfurt head coach Gordon Herbert. In the run, it was the veteran Bizaca that took control scoring 12 points including three three pointers. However the Fraport Skyliners remained calm and most important still had fire and energy in their offensive motor as they thwarted the run by starting a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 82-68. In the run it was Robertson finding daylight from the wing and scoring inside, Theodore then fed Doornekamp for another simple bucket inside and Theodore then scored over the 201cm tall Spires. One huge advantage that the Fraport Skyliners have displayed time in and time out this season and especially in the Europe Cup competition has been their great ability to stay strong in the fourth and still find extra energy to overcome adversity which they did. After Bowlin made an another three to cut the Frankfurt lead to 82-71, it was Doornekamp that finally closed the door on Sodertalje with consecutive bombs from downtown to extend the Frankfurt lead to 90-73. Sodertalje were able to make some three´s from Lejasmeiers and Pita, but it was too late as Frankfurt made free throws from Voigtmann and Doornekamp sealing victory number 10 in the Europe Cup play. “The key at the end was staying together. We know that they haven’t lost a game in their home floor in their league. They also can shoot the hell out of the ball. Basketball is a game of runs. They made a late rally but we were able to answer every time. That’s who we are. Just because you come out punching doesn’t mean we’re going to fold. We kept playing Skyliner basketball”, warned Jordan Theodore. “Frankfurt just kept coming at us the whole game. When we cut it to 8 we had a nice rhythm going but they got a couple of threes and easy buckets and pulled away”, added Skyler Bowlin.

The Fraport Skyliners were led by Aaron Doornekamp with 25 points. Quantez Robertson supplied 19 points with 17 in the first half. Johannes Voigtmann had 17 points while Jordan Theodore had 14 points and 11 points. The Sodertalje Kings were led by Toni Bzaca and Nicolas Spires who scored 16 points a piece. Davis Lejasmeires had 12 points and Skyler Bowlin contributed 11 points. The Fraport Skyliners shot 69% from the field and 64% from outside while Sodertalje shot 45% from the field and 50% from outside. Frankfurt won the rebound duel 24-23 and had 15 turnovers while Sodertalje had 17 turnovers. The Fraport Skyliners will forget this big win quickly as the enxt huge focus will be the EWE Baskets Oldenburg Sunday as the 2004 Beko BBL champion wants to return back to the cup top 4 where they last played in 2009 in Hamburg. “I’m very excited about the cup game. It’s the next game on our schedule and we owe them one from the beginning of the season. The game won’t be an easy one but we’re ready! I’m also excited about playing against my bro Scott Machado. I’m looking forward to the matchup”, warned Jordan Theodore.

SkylerBowlin is a 26 year old 190cm guard from Paragould, Arkansas playing his fifth professional season and first with the Sodertalje Kings (Sweden-Basketligan). He played the last three seasons with Horsens IC (Denmark-Ligaen) winning the league title and cup and last season played 39 games averaging 16.0ppg, 3.0rpg, Assists-2(6.3apg), Steals-2(2.4spg), FGP: 53.4%, 3PT: 45.5%, FT: 83.2%. As a rookie he played for BG Topstar Leitershofen/Stadtbergen (Germany-Pro A) playing 28 games: 12.4ppg, 2.6rpg, 3.3apg, Steals-2(2.0spg), FGP: 48.5%, 3PT: 34.7%, FT: 80.5% and then played with Ringwood Hawks (Australia-ABA): 18 games: 18.3ppg, 4.9rpg, 3.7apg, 2.8spg, 2FGP: 44.1%, 3PT: 31.8%, FT: 80.5%. He started his basketball career with Missouri So. (NCAA2) in 2007 until 2011 playing a total of 118 games and as a senior played 31 games: 18.1ppg, 3.2rpg, 5.7apg, 2.4spg, FGP: 44.2%, 3PT: 36.7%, FT: 82.7%. He spoke to German Hoops before the Europe Cup game against the Fraport Skyliners.

 

 

Skyler thanks for talking to German Hoops You have played in Germany, three years in Denmark and now celebrated the holiday season in Sweden for the first time. Is there any difference to the whole holiday process from Sweden to Denmark? What do you cherish most about celebrating the holiday season in Europe?

It is definitely a different experience celebrating Christmas over here in Europe than back home in Arkansas. There are quite a few different traditions, but I enjoyed my time with my teammates here.

What new year resolutions have you made for Skyler Bowlin the player and individual?

My resolutions as a player and a person are just to keep improving my game and who I am as a person. Just to strive to be the best player and person I can be and enjoy all of these great experiences I am blessed to be able to go through.

Sodertalje suffered a tough 76-56 loss against Royal Hali the team that most likely will compete with you for the second spot in the group. How long did it take to digest this loss?

Playing Royal Hali in Turkey was a difficult task for us. We only traveled with 8 players and didnt have out head coach or top assistant coach due to sickness. Our plan was to just go in and try to control the tempo of the game which we did for 30 minutes. We just ran out of gas in the fourth.

How key was it having a thin roster and hot shooting from Andrew Rautins help contribute to the loss? What other factors really had an impact on the game going the other way?

Rautins hit some tough shots against us. We knew he was a great shooter and he proved it against us. In the 4 quarter they started hitting some shots they had been missing most of the game and that was the big difference in my eyes.

Since the last time we spoke, Sodertalje is 4-1 in the Basketligan and have a 15-2 record. The defense has picked in the last three games. You give up 76 points in Fiba Cup, but score only 71 points in Fiba Cup. What does the team need to do to be able to score even more in the Fiba Cup?

We just have to keep believing in our system and continue playing together as a team like we have been. For the most part, in all of our games we get the shots we want. We just have to focus in and knock those shots down and we have a chance against any team.

You have arrived in Europe Cup action averaging 11,3ppg, 2,9rpg, 4,8apg and 2,0spg. What is the biggest challenge that you personally meet before every Europe Cup game in your offensive game?

I just try to approach each game the same. I just have to go out and play as hard and as smart as I can each possession and good things will happen.

You are averaging 2,0spg. How vital is it for you personally to let your annoying defense help let spark your offensive game?

I feel like its very important for me. Anytime I can get my team extra possessions it is a good thing.

The next game is against the Fraport Skyliners. In the first game Frankfurt won 95-64. What lessons did the team learn from this loss?

We learned that if we want to compete with Frankfurt then we have to play a very good game. We know they are bigger and stronger, but we have to come out and be physical and try to control the tempo of the game.

Frankfurt crushed Sodertalje with their twin towers Johannes Voigtmann and Danilo Barthel who combined for 43 points. One can almost say they are unstoppable as they belong to the top big men passers in the Beko BBL . Even if you double them, they find a way to finish or find the wings or cutters. Is there anyway to stop them?

They are a great duo to have inside for sure. We just have to follow our scouting report and be physical with them and disrupt their flow as good as we can.

What was your impression of Johannes Voigtmann? For many he is the best player in the Beko BBL and as of late has NBA teams following him.

He is a special player. He has great size and also moves very well. He definitely possesses a great skill set and a soft touch as well.

The Frankfurt game is a key game for Sodertalje and your chances of advancing. Is this the biggest game for the team this season and what will be key for winning?

Going into this game we will approach it like any other game. We have to focus on ourselves first and be at the top of our game and everything else will take care of itself.

Have you seen the new Star Wars movie? What was your impression of it and how did you like it compared to the earlier films?

I actually havent seen any of them unfortunately.

What was the last movie that you saw?

He then moved to NC-Asheville (NCAA) where he finished his college career and as a senior played 29 games: 16.4ppg, 4.0rpg, 4.1apg, 1.9spg, FGP: 45.1%, 3Pts: 41.1%, FT: 83.5%. He played two seasons for the Kirchheim Knights in the German Pro A where he was top 5 in assists in the league the last two seasons. Last season for Kichheim he played 28 games: 12.0ppg, 3.4rpg, Assists-5(5.0apg), FGP: 46.3%, 3PT: 40.2%, FT: 88.2%. This season he is playing for the MLP Academics Heidelberg and spoke to German Hoops after the big 81-58 win against the Dragons Rhondorf.

 

 

Bryan thanks for talking to German Hoops. You have been playing in Germany for some years now, but what do you tend to appreciate most about the holiday time in this country?

Hi Miles, Happy New Year to you. Firstly, I am crazy about Christmas so Germany is the perfect place for me around the holidays. I have really grown to appreciate the Christmas markets, lights, and spirit during the holiday season.

What new years resolutions have you made for Bryan Smithson the professional player and the person?

I did not make any New Year’s resolutions for 2016. However, I am always striving to become a better man and improve as a basketball player. Fundamentals in my life are just as important, if not more, than the fundamental skills I try to hone everyday as a professional athlete.

Congrats on the huge 81-58 victory against the Dragons Rhondorf. How proud are you of the team who once again showed that despite having another set back with losing American Marcos Knight, the team was able to win their second straight game without the talented American?

I am very proud of our team and the resilience we have shown up to this point in the season. Our roster has been shaken up several times but it is important to note that the guys on this team never stopped working and that is why we were able to leave Rhondorf with the two points.

The MLP Academics Heidelberg were in control of the game until the end. What do you feel was the biggest key to being able to keep a strong hold on the living room sofa never allowing the opponent a chance to get on?

Our approach to the game was the biggest key to holding the scoring gap throughout. Rhondorf plays with high energy but they struggle to hold that energy for long periods of time. We had to take advantage of that by staying focused on each defensive possession.

Heidelberg played hard-nosed defense holding Rhondorf to 58 points. How vital was it containing American Sterling Carter who gets that team going, but the team shot only 29% from the field and 14% from outside?

We knew that if we could shrink the court on the defensive end and force them to make difficult shots, we would give ourselves a great chance to win the game.

Besides playing strong defense, would you agree that team unselfishness which led to 21 assists was the biggest strength on the offensive end?

Anytime our team can finish a game with 20+ assists it is a great sign that we are playing the right way. Obviously, making shots helps but I think it goes hand in hand with making the extra pass and playing unselfishly.

Germans Kristian Kuhn, Albert Kuppe and Maximillian Rockmann combined for 31 points. How vital is their consistent production for the continued success of the club?

Kris, Albert, and Max are the guys I like to talk about because they show up every day and work hard regardless of the circumstances. Their production is extremely important to the success of the team. When they are producing, our team is clicking on all cylinders.

The club is on a playoff spot at the moment, but please explain how difficult this season has been with all the set backs with players coming and going and injuries and what the secret has been to staying positive and still winning games?

Every time I speak to eurobasket.com there is a new change/addition to our team, so the challenges go without saying. Staying positive is easy because the core of our leadership has never changed. We have and will go through times of difficulty because of the roster changes, but as long as the core stays strong and persistent we will find a way to win games.

First you lose Aaron Thomas and now Marcos Knight. Who will be next? You won´t be making any surprise escapes to another team?

I am wearing the MLP Academics jersey loyally this season.

With so many top players leaving, does that increase your need to be a leader and step up even more as the season progresses?

As I said before, the core of our teams’ leadership has not changed. I will lead in the same manner that I have up to this point in the season. The challenge is that roles change a little for everyone and as one of the leaders on this team, it is my job to help facilitate that transition.

How vital has the pick up of Hrvoje Kovacevic been who brings 29 international club game experience to the squad? What does he bring to the team that it didn´t have before?

Kova’s experience is invaluable to us here in Heidelberg. He brings extra energy on both sides of the floor along with positivity in practice every day. Anytime a club adds a player like Kova with a high basketball IQ to the roster, the team will benefit in a variety of ways.

You had 4 turnovers against Rhondorf and only four turnovers in the previous six games. If you go 0/10, you can go in the gym the next day and shoot until you bleed, but how do you react after a 4 turnover game best?

I am actually happy to hear this question. Unfortunately, the statistics from Rhondorf are inaccurate. I did not have 4 turnovers and my streak of low turnover games continued. I hope that in the future ProA basketball will set standards which provide clear guidelines for stat keepers and hold each club accountable for abiding by those standards. With that said, I have had many games in my career with 4 turnovers. As a point guard turnovers are inevitable but I think after a game with a few too many, you have to reemphasize the importance of every possession without it affecting the speed of your decisions. Just like everything else – practice, practice, practice.

You are 8/10 from outside in the last two games. Are you shooting the ball at your best this season?

My confidence shooting the ball is really flowing. I have had some really great shooting seasons in my life, so it is difficult to say that it is my best. At this point, I just want to take good shots and the rest will take care of itself.

With the second half of the season in full swing and the team having a two game winning streak, what do is the most important thing in your game that you want to do well each game?

On this team it is important for me to provide structure and leadership each game. With the personnel on our roster we must play team basketball and be unselfish in order to find success.

Do you see Steph Curry hitting for 70 this season or is his point guard tendencies something that won´t allow him and his many scoring options?

I do not know if he will hit 70 points this season but I can tell you that if he did, it would not surprise me in the least. If he does, I hope I am watching.

Have you seen the new Star Wars movie? How did you like it in comparison to the other ones?

I am not a Star Wars fan but I hope the true fans enjoy it to the fullest.

What was the last movie that you saw?

Vacation.

Jordan thanks for talking to German Hoops. How did you enjoy celebrating the holiday season in Germany?

It was nice, we mostly had games or practice but I did get to see some fireworks for New Years. It’s a war zone out there!

What new year resolutions have you made for Jordan Callahan the player and person?

I don’t really believe in New Year Resolutions it’s all hype to me. If someone wants to make a change or a new commitment in their life New Years shouldn’t be the starting point. It can start the next day or the next week.

Crailsheim is currently in 14th place with a record of 5-12 fighting against getting down into the cellar. The Crailsheim Melrins really have played some very good games, but then come back the next week and stink up the arena giving up 100 points. Why is this team so up and down?

Games are 40 minutes long. And most of the time we only play well for 20-25 minutes. We just have to stay focused for 40mins every game.

Crailsheim makes 72 points per game, but gives up 88 points per game. Where do you feel lies the biggest problems on the defensive end? Do you see this team finding a more consistent rhythm on defense?

It’s just a combination of a lot of little things that makes the difference with us. But I do believe this second half we will be much more consistent, especially on the defensive end.

How important has the pick up of Shy Ely been. He is currently the teams most consistent three point shooter. What is his most important asset that he supplies the team that they didn´t have before?

Shy does a lot of things for us. Like you said he’s a great shooter but he’s also a superb defender and a good team player.

How important has the experience and leadership been from German Konrad Wysocki and Adam Chubb? What do you like most about their games?

Konny and Adam have been great. Their voices are definitely heard throughout the locker room. Adam is constantly telling me things to help me get better and of course I listen since he’s a seasoned vet. Konrad is probably one of the most craftiest players I’ve ever played with. I learn by just watching him sometimes.

You are leading the team in scoring, assists and steals. How pleased have you been with your game and good adjustment to the Beko BBL?

I actually don’t think I’ve been at my best. For whatever reason my rhythm was off for the better part of the first half. But playing so many games in a short period over the holidays really helped me. So I’m excited to see what happens this half.

What has been the most difficult thing that you have had to adjust to the level of the Beko BBL that you are still getting used to?

Really the only thing is the physicality. The refs let you play if that’s how you want to look at.

Do you feel that your relentless strong defense will rub off more on your teammates in the second half of the season to give the team an added push on defense?

I think we can all feed off of each other. Seeing someone else playing hard makes you want to play hard. And if we can get all 5 players doing this we will be in better shape.

The next game is against the Fraport Skyliners. Recently the Crailsheim Merlins lost at home 72-56. Do you see it as an advantage that you will play them again as if it was a delayed playoff series?

For sure both teams will have a better feel for one another seeing as we just played. I think the intensity level will be much higher. And obviously we will make the necessary adjustments to try and take away what they were successful in last game.

Crailsheim played pretty good defense keeping Frankfurt to16 points under their season average on points allowed, but couldn´t get their offense going. What do you feel the team has learned from the loss that will make this game totally different?

We went back and looked at the tape of the last game. We saw the problems we were having and I think we will be more ready this game.

I think a key will be keeping Johannes Voigtmann and Danilo Barthel in check, but that is easier said than done. How big will it be keeping hands up in passing lanes, because they both are incredible passers even out of the double team?

They’re good players and definitely play a big role in their offense. We just have to stay concentrated for 40 minutes and try to keep them from getting a rhythm.

Do you see Steph Curry hitting for 70 points this season or is there too much firepower on that team to prevent it?

70 is a lot! Does he have the skill to it? Certainly. But I don’t think that would happen when you have so many weapons on a team like that

Have you seen the new Star Wars movie? How do you compare it to the other movies in that series?

Never was a Star Wars fan

What was the last movie that you saw?

Haven’t been to the movies since I’ve been here so it’s hard to say!

David Sturner is a 206cm power forward/center playing his first season in Germany for pro B team Dresden Titans and currently is averaging 11,4ppg and 6,4rpg. He started his basketball career with Orgeon State playing 13 NCAA games and then moved to S.Oregon (NAIA) and as a senior played 31 games: 14.6ppg, 9.2rpg, 1.2apg, 1.5bpg, FGP: 56.2%, 3PT: 36.4%, FT: 56.2%. He started his professional basketball career recently with the West Adelaide Bearcats (Australia-Central ABL) before coming to Germany. He spoke to German Hoops after the big 118-79 win against the Uni-Riesen Leipzig.

 

David thanks for talking to German Hoops. How did you spend the holiday season and new year?

My pleasure Miles. I was fortunate enough to have my fiancé fly out to Dresden from California over the Christmas break. It was amazing to show her the city and experience the Christmas traditions of Dresden together. We spent Christmas in Prague which was also incredible. It’s really a blessing the places basketball can take you.

What new year resolutions have you made for 2016 for David Sturner the professional basketball player and person?

I honestly haven’t taken the time to commit myself to any New Years resolutions. I just plan to continue to stay focused on what’s important both on and off the court. That’s giving my best each day, and working on growing in all areas of my life.

Shortly before the holiday break, the Dresden Titans lost to BG Karlsruhe snapping a three game winning streak. Did that loss personally take long for you to digest?

After the Karlsruhe game I let myself relax and enjoy the break. Normally that would have been a hard game to deal with mentally, but I think it was for the best for all of us to just enjoy the holidays and focus on time with our loved ones.

When looking back at the loss to BG Karlsruhe, what did you notice was missing from the Dresden Titans game to be a top team like them?

I think at that point in time it was just confidence. We have all of the pieces to be a top team, we just have to continue to put them together.

With what kind of approach was the team going into the game against Leipzig? You were looking for your first win against a top 3 team in the Pro B south?

Our approach was very simple, execute our game plan, push the ball, and have fun. We didn’t over complicate the game. We knew if we played this way we’d be successful.

Congrats on the huge 118-79 win against the Uni-Riesen Leipzig. It was the biggest point total of the season and second 100 plus game. What do you feel is the most underrated part about the Dresden offense?

I think if anything is underestimated about our offense, it’s the fact that we have so many guys who are capable of scoring. It doesn’t matter what 5 players are on the court, we have offensive weapons. It’s rare to have a team with so many options.

The game was decided at halftime as you led 66-34. What were the key words that new head coach Steven Clauss stressed besides not losing focus that allowed you to continue playing your game and scoring consistent for 40 minutes?

Well you nailed it right on the head. Coach Clauss told us to continue to focus on executing our game plan, don’t let up, and have fun. He kept it short and simple for us.

How much self confidence did this win give the club and do you see it growing in the next months?

I think it gave us a lot of confidence. We really went out and did what we knew we could do. We want to continue to build on each game and I think confidence is something that we will have more and more of each week.

After going into the game with a 6-8 record, on what things does the team still need to improve on to reach the playoffs this season?

That’s a tough question because we can always improve in each area of the game. I think at this point because we have a new coach with new schemes and a new playing style we just really need to focus on everything new that Coach Clauss has introduced us to and improve on those things.

The club had six players in double figures. Can this unselfishness be carried on into the next games?

Absolutely! I don’t know if we will average 120 points a game, but with our offense and personnel we can have a number of guys score in double figures every night.

How important was the pick up of Randal Holt who netted 25 points in his first game? What does he give the club that was lacking before besides massive scoring punch?

Adding Randall to the team was a great pick up for us, and obviously has already started to pay off. Randall’s game is very versatile, and he has the ability to create for himself as well as others so we will have a lot of different looks offensively.

How excited are you to be playing with Randall Holt. How can you profit best from his game?

I’m very excited to play with Randall. I think he is a great talent and has a lot to offer to our team. When Randall has the ball he is a playmaker and I believe he demands a lot of focus from the defense. This will leave myself and others open a lot and we just need to be ready to score when he finds us. I think everyone will profit from having him on the floor.

The club has a very experienced and knowledgeable coach with Steven Clauss. What does he give the team now that German Thomas Krzywinski didn´t have?

I think both Steven and Thomas are great coaches, and I’ve learned a lot from both of them. Coach Clauss comes to us with extensive coaching experience and more knowledge about the game than any other coach I’ve played for. I think the team has responded very well to his style, and our new offensive and defensive schemes compliment our personnel very well.

You are averaging 11,4ppg, 6,4rpg and 1,2apg. How happy have you been with your offensive input in the first half of the season?

I feel that I’ve underachieved offensively up to this point in the season. I will always be working to improve my game and be more efficient, but at the end of the day as long as we are winning games, I’ll be happy.

You had a super start to the season, then struggled a bit, but have picked it up in the last three games. What continues be most stressful for you on the court in your first season in Germany?

It’s hard to say what’s been stressful for me on the court. I usually don’t find myself stressing too much when I’m playing. If there’s been anything, it’s been that we have underachieved so far this season. When your record doesn’t reflect how good the team is, that can cause a lot of stress.

What do you want to improve in your game in the second half of the season?

I would like to improve all aspects of my game throughout the rest of the season, but if I had to narrow it down I would say my defense, and being more aggressive rebounding.

Do you see Steph Curry hitting for 70 points in the next years?

I think he could, but no he won’t. I don’t think that he would ever be selfish enough to take that many shots. He’s still a point guard after all.

Have you seen the new Star Wars movie? What was your impression of it and how do you compare it to the others?

I did get to see the new Star Wars. I saw it during the Christmas break with my fiancé, here in Dresden. I really loved the movie! I think that the next two movies will determine how great this one really was, and I don’t think you can compare the movies with one another.

What was the last movie that you saw?

I haven’t watched another movie since Star Wars! Thanks Miles!

Steven Bennett is a 27 year old 173cm point guard from Los Angeles that is playing his fourth professional basketball season and first with the Finke Baskets Paderborn. As a rookie he played for the Spot Up Medium Baskets Braunschweig. With Braunschweig he played 10 games averaging 22.7ppg, 4.1rpg, 5.1apg, 2.4spg, 2FGP: 57.5%, 3FGP: 34.2%, FT: 76.6% He is one of the few special players that has a tenacity and will to win that is unmatched; it is impossible to judge him based upon height alone because he can compete with anyone in the world. He has proven this in the Maui Invitational division I tournament in 2010, and was recognized as one of the top players (All-Maui Award) from a field of other top US point guards such as Kemba Walker, Kailin Lucas and Brandon Knight. Bennett is known for his great court vision and passing ability, and is able to get in the lane at will and finish against anyone with either left or right hand. Every team bases their defensive strategy around Bennett and is forced to take create his own shot and take his three point shots off the dribble. He is an excellent shooter, but wants to continue to improve his already respectable 40% three point percentage. Steven is known for having excellent leadership skills, and is highly respected by all of his peers and coaches. He played at Citrus JC (JUCO) from 2007-2009 and then played at Chaminade (NCAA2). In the summer of 2013 he also found experience playing for the  Rockingham Flames (Australia-SBL) He played three games with 2013 NBA draft pick Dennis Schroeder as a rookie in the Pro B. In the 2013-2014 season he played for the LTi Giessen 46ers (Germany-ProA, starting five): 37 games: 11.1ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.4apg, 1.2spg, FGP: 44.4%, 3PT: 32.6%, FT: 66.7%. Steven thanks for talking to German Hoops. How did you spend the holiday season in Los Angeles or were you somewhere else in the world?

I spent my holidays with my mother and sister. It’s rare that I get time off during the holidays being a basketball player, so it is always great when I can do so.

What new year resolutions have you made for yourself for Steven Bennett the professional player and person?

My New Years resolutions is to try not to worry too much about things you can’t control and to make sure I’m taking the correct steps to lead me to my goals in life.

Welcome back to Germany! You have signed with the Finke Baskets Paderborn. Could one say you are an agent in the making?

I wouldn’t say that I just signed to play basketball, being an agent is something I could never see myself doing.

 

You played in the Czech Republic last season for CEZ Basketball Nymburk (Czech Republic-NBL): 5 games: 5.2ppg, 1.2rpg, 3.8apg, FGP: 31.3%, 3PT: 30.0%, FT: 87.5%; VTB United League: 1 game: 0pts, 1ast, left in Jan.’15, later that month moved to JBC MMCITE Brno (Czech Republic-NBL, starting five): 12 games: 14.0ppg, 3.7rpg, 3.7apg, 1.5spg, FGP: 50.7%, 3PT: 27.7%, FT: 74.1%. Do you feel that your experience there had anything to do with having problems finding a team this season? You had a very solid season for JBC MMCITE Brno.

I actually had a stress fracture in my left foot towards the end of the season and continued to play on it but in the long run it wasn’t a good decision. I did have a couple offers this summer that I turned down because I wanted certain things for myself and career.

 

Did it surprise you that after two very good seasons with the Spot Up Medien Baskets and Giessen that you didn´t continue playing in Germany?

I’m not surprised. I have seen plenty of players travel from place to place. Even with this only being my 4th year, I have played in quite a few of countries, but I have always had good years in Germany.

I always thought that you fit in very well with the Giessen guard rotation and was surprised a bit that they didn´t retain you. Did Denis Wucherer tell you why they didn´t want to keep you?

We had talked about me returning after the season, but once summer came around things just didn’t work out. There are a great deal of things that factor into signing with a team, but my time in Giessen with Coach Dennis was a great step and it helped me a lot in my career. I learned so much and I still talk to coach; he’s a big supporter of me and still helps me to this day.

Now you have signed with the Finke Baskets Paderborn. How excited are you to be playing for this organization?

Great, I think Paderborn is always an underdog in the German Pro A league. I think helping them for the remainder of the season will be fun.

What are you looking forward to most about being on the court in Germany again as well as living the German lifestyle again?

After playing around the world in different locations, I missed the German fan base. It is always fun to play on the road with a packed gym where the fans are going crazy.

You come to a struggling 5-12 team that is in 14th place. Do you see yourself as a type of savior for the team?

No, I don’t see myself as a savior, but more of a missing piece to help a struggling team.

You will form a very strong duo with American point guard Chase Adams. Do you see a possibily of playing more the two with Paderborn?

That was something the coach and I discussed before signing. I could play the 2 position, so that we could increase the pace of the game and force teams to adjust.

How do you feel are you a better player now after playing in the Czech Republic compared to when you played last in Germany with Giessen?

I think every year that you play as a pro you become better no matter what. Whether it is either mentally, physically or just skilled as a player, you do get better. I look at each situation as a different chapter and I try to learn from each.

Do you see Steph Curry hitting for 70 points this season?

I think Steph is the best shooter we have ever seen in the NBA, but at the same time he’s a point guard so I think he enjoys passing also. 70 points can happen if he wanted it to maybe, but I think he just enjoys his team playing well and winning.

Have you seen the new Star Wars movie? What was your impression of it and how do you compare it to the others?

I have never really been a big fan of the Star War series, but I’m always open to new movies so maybe I’ll give it a watch.

What was the last movie that you saw?

As a senior he played 34 games averaging 13.7ppg, 4.7rpg, 4.7apg, 2.8spg, FGP: 37.5%, 3Pts: 40.3%, FT: 77.1%. Last season he played for Aris Thessaloniki (Greece-A1) playing 31 games averaging 10.2ppg, 3.9rpg, 3.4apg, Steals-1(1.8spg), FGP: 47.0%, 3PT: 34.5%, FT: 75.4%,He is a basketball globetrotter as he has played in 11 countries since turning professional in 2007 and Rosa Radom is his 17^th professional team that he has laced up his sneakers for. He is still looking for his first professional title, but has demonstrated his basketball craft on both sides of the court as he was top assist man in Holland, scorer in Sweden and steals in Sweden, Holland, Russia, and Greece. He is a a true °pass-first” point guard, but that can lead a game in scoring on any night. Unselfish player. Makes everyone else better and on the defensive side an absolute lockdown defender that is a great on the ball defender. Like Quantez Robertson can fill up the stats sheet. He spoke to German Hoops before the Europe Cup game against the Fraport Skyliners.

 

 

Torey thanks for talking to German Hoops. How did you get into 2016 and what new years resolutions do you have as a player and as person?

You’re welcome Miles. Happy New Year. I don’t have any resolutions as a player or as a person. I simply set goals and try my best to achieve them.

You are 30 years old and playing your 9th professional season and your playing for your 17th professional team and in your 11 country. Do you at times feel like you are a basketball globetrotter?

Yes I definitely feel like I’m a basketball globetrotter. What better way is it to play basketball and see the world than what I am doing now.

If someone had told you in the summer of 2008 after your rookie season with teams in Turkey, Sweden and France that a kid from White Plains, New York would still be playing professionally in 2015 what would you have thought?

I would have thought that I am extremely blessed to have this opportunity. I know how hard I work for this but many people don’t get to keep playing professionally as long as I do and I very grateful. I thank God everyday for this blessing.

You played once before in Poland with PGE Turow Zgorzelec (Poland-PLK) and this season your playing for Rosa Radom (Poland-TBL), 5 years after playing in Poland last, how would you describe the player Torey Thomas and what does he have now that he didn´t have in the 2010-2011 season?

I have more wisdom. Playing for these years I gained more and more knowledge of the game.

Currently Rosa Radom is in second place behind Stelmet as the top positions are very tight. What have been the main reasons for the success of the team?

We play as a cohesive unit on both ends of the floor. We play very solid defense and we move the ball around on offense. We have a good mixture of players and good teammates. Our coaches believe in our abilities.

A big strength of the team is team defense as it allows 70 points in the Polish league and has given up 70 points or less seven times. What has been key for developing this consistency on the defensive end so early in the season?

Communication and togetherness. Knowing that if you get beat one of your teammates will be there to help you and always rotating to the next player. We take pride in our defense.

Another team strength is team rebounding. You and American CJ Harris average 9,6rpg combined. How key has been the guards helping out at all times?

This helps big time. When your guards rebound it takes pressure off of the big guys and they can focus on good boxing out. When the guards like us rebound we can score points in transition.

American CJ Harris might be the teams top scorer, but aside from that what other aspect does he give the team that is extra special?

He’s can create his own shot very well, rebounds very well, and plays defense. He’s an up and coming star. Euro league type of player.

Rosa Radom had a 5-1 record in the first round of Europe Cup and now come into a group with Frankfurt, Royal Hali and Sodertalje. What can we expect from this group?

This is an extremely tough group. You can expect some very good games between all the teams. Basketball on all levels is represented well in this group. I’m excited to see how this round shapes up.

The next game is against the Fraport Skyliners. What do you remember from your ex teammate at Holy Cross Keith Simmons telling you when he played with Frankfurt?

I heard that Frankfurt is a beautiful city. He liked the organization and the fans. This will be a good trip for us. I like to explore every city that I travel to. I hope to see something very interesting in Frankfurt.

Do you still get pumped playing against big time point guards like ex Seton hall American Jordan Theodore that like you spent much time in New York city as he comes from across the river in New Jersey.

Yes I definitely get pumped up playing against a great guard like Jordan Theodore. He has the whole package and it’s great to see NYC or Tri-State guards playing professionally and doing well.

How key will the inside battle be between the two Polish big men Robert Witka and Michael Sokolowski against the Frankfurt twin towers Johannes Voigtmann and Danilo Barthel. How much of the game could be decided with these four players?

These are key match ups because all 4 played are key contributors in the game. I believe that it will rely heavily on the overall play of both teams.

You are only 178cm big. In what other areas of your game do you make up for your lack of height?

My heart makes up for my lack of height. If I’m 178cm big then my heart has to be most of that height lol I enjoy rebounding and getting down there with the big guys.

What is a hidden strength in your game that doesn´t get noticed right away?

Basketball IQ is not seen right away but the ability to read plays on both ends of the floor really is a strength I take pride in.

With all the different teams that you have helped win games, how surprising is it for you that you are still looking for your first title?

Its tough because most leagues have a dominant team in their country that usually wins the championships. I have helped teams get back to their winning ways but my main objective is to win a title. I believe before my career is over I will do that.

In the two seasons 2012-2014 you played for 6 teams with two in Turkey and France and one in Serbia and Italy. Is it difficult to keep motivating yourself for a new team, country, culture etc after having to leave so often?

In this business you can’t always factor in something going wrong or why you have to leave a particular situation. So my love for the game of basketball keeps me motivated to go into another country, culture, and environment. I look at is as another opportunity to play the game that I love but also learn about a new culture that I normally wouldn’t have known about before I arrived.

In the 2001-2011 season you played with PGE Turow Zgorzelec with Germans Konrad Wysocki who studied at Princeton and Robert Tomaszek who once scared away a burglar in Germany. How do you remember these two fine men best in your memories?

Man first of all both great people and great teammates. We accomplished so much that season going all the way to the finals game 7 vs Asseco Prokom euroleague team. Rob was my enforcer and Konrad was always the voice of reason. I enjoyed playing with these guys.

What was your wake up call to being a rookie in Europe when you played for Kepez Bld Antalya, Akropol BBK (Sweden-Basketligan) and Etendard de Brest (France-ProB).

My wake up call was scoring my first basket and it was announced in another language. It was an amazing feeling but it was weird like wow I am actually playing professional basketball.

For a professional basketball player winning is most important, but stats don´t lie. You have been top assist man in Holland, scorer in Sweden and steals in Sweden, Holland, Russia, and Greece. Would you say you pride your game most on defense even if people might get blinded by your offensive strength?

Yes I definitely pride myself on being defensive first but I work continuously on my offensive skills so that I am not a one dimensional player. I want to be a complete point guard so that means leading my team first and foremost. After leadership it’s making sure I assist, rebound, steal, score and make other teammates have confidence in themselves to make big plays.

It has been more than 12 years ago where two young New York boys Keith Simmons and you arrived in Worcester on the campus of Holy Cross. It has been a long time, but when you look back what is your most cherished memory with him on and off the court?

Most cherished moment on the court with him was in 2007 winning the Patriot League Championship on our home court and giving him a big hug. It was special moment to get bid into the NCAA Tournament. Off the court we were roommates and we enjoyed each other’s company I’m very happy and proud of Keith’s success!

You have played against so many great players over the years, but which player was the toughest that you ever had to play against?

I would have to say Scottie Pippen back in 2008 in Akropol. He came to Sundsvall, Sweden and played against us and at 42 years old he still had everything. It was special to share the court with a legend.

What is the state of Lebron James in 2016? When it´s all said and done do you see him being greater than Michael Jordan?

Lebron James is the best all around basketball player in 2016 in my opinion. He’s been the best all around player for several years. I don’t see him being greater than Michael Jordan though. That’s okay because that’s why his name is Lebron James he will leave his own legacy when he’s done playing.

What was the last movie that you saw?

Creed which was an excellent movie.

He played at Miles(NCAA2) and has played in Germany for most of his professional career with four seasons with the Dresden Titans and three seasons with the BG Aschersleben Tigers (Germany-Regionalliga). He also gained experience playing with teams like Marietta Storm (SEBL), BC Celtics (SEBL), C.B. Aridane (Spain-EBA) and Universidad Tecnologica Equinoc. Quito (Ecuador-National League). Last season he played for BG Aschersleben Tigers (Germany-Regionalliga) averaging 19,9ppg, 6,5rpg and 3,9apg. He spoke to German Hoops after then huge 118-79 victory against the Uni-Riesen Leipzig.

 

 

Andrew thanks for talking to German Hoops. You have been playing in Germany for many years and especially in Dresden have seen the classic Christmas tradition being lived. How did you spend the holiday season and new year?

Thanks Miles it’s always good speak with you. This actually my third Christmas vacation in Germany since I’ve been here. Especially Dresden, which has one of the best Christmas Markets in the world. I spent the holidays here in Dresden. A great place to be during the holidays.

What new year resolutions have you made for 2016 for Andrew Jones the professional basketball player and person?

I’m not a big new resolution guy. But if I had one, I would like to help get our team get on track to the high level basketball we play. Personally, try to be the best man I can be.

Any loss is difficult when your trying everything to win. I will say that loss did hurt because our team is very talented. We gave away a game at their home by 3, after controlling until the last minutes. Then they came to our house and beat us by 16. That’s tough!

I think the club is feeling confident. It helps when what your practice works on game day. Everyone has no choice but to feel good about this.

The style of play Coach Clauss is teaching enables us to have many scoring threats. We had three more players who missed the double digit mark by a few points. I believe this will be a normal playing style for us.

How important was the pick up of Randal Holt who netted 25 points in his first game?? What does he give the club that was lacking before besides massive scoring punch?

Randal is very important for this team! He gives us a quicker pace. He controls the game very well. I’m personally excited to have a player like him on our team.

How excited are you to be playing with Randall Holt. What can we expect from this duo and how lethal could it become?

Playing with Randal is a blessing. He will change how teams defend us. Dresden has two guards that are in attack mode! I hope I can get a couple alley oops

The club has a very experienced and knowledgeable coach with Steven Clauss. What does he give the team now that German Thomas Krzywinski didn´t have?

Coach K gave blood, sweat and tears to the Titans. It is difficult to say what he didn’t give, because he gave everything. However, Coach Clauss brings a style of coaching that translates easily. His resume speaks for itself.

You are averaging 10,3ppg, 4,5rpg and 3,5apg. You had an up and down first half and I don´t need to tell you are you happy with your performance. What have been the main reasons for the less productive Andrew Jones being on the court?

I can honestly say that I allowed things outside my control to affect the way I play. This is definitely the worst half of basketball in my career. I’m happy to have gone through this. If God allows me another game, I will play at my highest level.

How confident are you that you will pick it up in the second half? Could a Randall Holt help propel your game with his play?

Very confident things will change. Randal will be a big part of it, he is our floor general.

Your defense is very solid. Are you a kind of player that is confident that good defense will get your shooting going? Your shooting has been down, but repairable.

I’m not the guy to make excuses or says what needs to be done for my shooting to get better. It just needs to get better. I will take advantage of every opportunity I have to make it better.

Do you see Steph Curry hitting for 70 points in the next years?

If any player can, it is definitely him. Incredible talent!!!

Have you seen the new Star Wars movie? What was your impression of it and how do you compare it to the others?

I haven’t seen it yet. Stars wars is a classic so I will definitely see it soon.

What was the last movie that you saw?

I can’t remember a movie, but I just finished Ray Donavan on Netflix second season.
