John thanks for talking to German Hoops. Where are you at the moment and how has your summer been?

Thank you for the interview Miles. My summer was short but as usual nothing beats California during the summer time. At the moment I am in the city I grew up in Visalia, California just getting ready for the upcoming junior college basketball season as I run my own news service www.signalthelightbasketball.com which covers mens junior college basketball within the state of California. So for the next six months it is going to be a lot of writing articles and a lot of watching basketball up and down the state.

The new season in Germany has already started in the Pro A and Pro B and BBL starts Friday. This is the second autumn where you aren´t on a professional basketball team since you retired from the game. Does missing the game get a bit easier as time goes by?

To be honest, it has got harder as time has gone by and I do miss it a little bit more this season than the first season sitting out. I mean at first I didn’t really think about it because I thought about how my career ended. The thought of that situation did not make me think about it but looking back now how I handled things and realize I should have appreciated a lot more towards the end of my career. I thought more about the things I didn’t have instead of enjoying the experience and seeing the bigger picture. I think more than anything it has made me appreciate things. Plus, I had to transition my life without basketball so without having a career and trying to find out what I was going to do without playing ball, I didn’t really think about missing it.

John thanks for talking to German Hoops. I wish it was under nicer circumstances, but every now and then it is correct to let a player to give his side of a story. You were recently released by Regionaliga team New Energie Elephants Grevenbroich. This a team where you started your career with in Germany in 2002. Was there ever a sign at the start that this season that you might not finish the season with the team?

I’m sure it was tough for both sides, I am mean it wasn’t as I had visioned it to be like. The last time I played there everything was very professional to practices, game preparations, as well of other things so it was very difficult for me. I am sure they had higher expectations as well, but at the same time when two sides can’t meet in the middle then someone has to go.

You were averaging 18 points, six rebounds and three assists, but as a player that has so much experience having played many seasons in the Beko BBl, you were recently released. Can you understand why a player of your stature could be released?

Well to be honest individually I wasn’t having a good season and they wanted more points from me, but in my eyes when a team is filled with two other guys who have first league experience, other guys who played at the pro A level as well then everyone’s numbers should be higher, but as the American I understand the business.

You were in Bremerhaven twice during the 2010-2012 seasons to play with TBB Trier against your old team Eisbaeren Bremerhaven, but last night you returned to play in the Allstar game. What kind of a feeling was it returning to an event like that was more for fun than for fighting for Beko BBL points?

For me it was good to see everyone who I have not seen in a while. We had two special seasons while I was there and it felt good seeing the guys who I had some great memories with. It was a lot easier playing for fun though rather than fighting for points. But overall it was a great experience and it was an honor to be a part of something like this.

What was your impression of this unique idea by the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven. Are you surprised that there haven’t been more games like this hosted by Beko BBL teams?

I think it was a great idea for the club to do something like this and it wouldn’t suprise me to see more clubs around the country to do it more. Like I said it was an honor to be a part of it.

The season isn´t even over and you and Chemnitz are going separate ways. A very uncharachteristic thing for you since you always finish the season. Why did the 2012-2013 season come to an abrupt end now?

Yea this is the first time that anything like this had happened in my career and it feels weird but when you don’t see eye to eye with certain people about certain things then someone has to go and with 8 weeks left in a season in a playoff race they did what they had to do and someone had to be blamed.

Your 35 now. Is Chemnitz the end of a long basketball career or will you hang on another year?

Yes this year was mentally draining to be honest and I don’t want to experience anything like this so I can honestly say that this was it. I had a great run and a long career and met many great people and developed a lot of friendships as well.

You were averaging 31 minutes for Chemnitz and had solid stats with 11,8ppg, 5,2rpg, 3,6apg and 1,5spg. You were one of the important contributers on the team, but was there no way how one could of soothed over any differences between you and others?

I honestly always felt I could do more and that’s not a jab at anyone but it was a tough situation to come into. I wasnt able to showcase my strengths on a consistent basis throughout the season. I was trying to fit in most the season instead of doing things that I did well throughout my career.

Thanks for talking to eurobasket John. The summer came and flew by. You spent some time in Asia. How was that experience for you and what did you learn there that you never had known before?

Yea I got to spend some time in Taiwan and the Phillipenes and it was a great experience. It was my first time in both of those countries and got to spend some time there and see Manilla and saw some great things that made me smile and at the same time saw some things that made me humble as well. It was a great time and I hope to go back again some day.

After two years in the Beko BBL, you return back to the PRO A hwere you also have played. How disappointed are you that you left TBB Trier? Was it a departure from both sides or how was this chapter ended?

To be honest it didn’t dissapoint me at all, It is a business and both parties needed a change and I loved the city of Trier and people I came across but I didn’t feel comfortable at all there anymore in the second year for various reasons but I appreciate and thank the organization for giving me a chance back to the BBL but trust me the memories are in the back of my head and I’m ready for a fresh start in Chemnitz.

It has been more than 4 months since you last played a Beko BBL game. How has your summer been? Were you able to do some things this summer that you haven´t been able to do the last years?

Well my summer was great it went by extremely fast but I got to get back to California and spend time with the family and although I didn’t travel that much it was good to be home and just relax a little bit.

How does an offseason training session look like for John Bynum?

Offseason training is mostly a lot of playing really. I am not big in working on certain individual things, for me it’s about keeping in somewhat shape and keeping a ball in your hands and not get too lazy.
