Miles Schmidt-Scheuber visiting Ilian Evtimov in Chalon in 2013

Evti, thanks for talking to GermanHoops.com. Happy Birthday! You turned 35 today. Is there something you would rather get for a birthday present now more than you would 10 years ago?

A nice family vacation. 10 years ago, I didn’t have a wife and children. Time away is always appreciated when with the family these days.

The last interview we did was before the 2016 Fiba Europe Cup Final 4 in Chalon. It has been 2 years since then. Has time flown by for you since then?

It has gone by very fast. Since then I have had a new child, Iliana, who was born in September 2016. Now the house is full with children. I don’t realize how fast the time goes by.

Chalon lost in the semi Finals to the Italian club Varese. What memories do you have of that weekend and was it in the end a bit of a consolation that your ex team Frankfurt won the title?

I wished we would of played against Frankfurt. In 2007, during the final 4 of the Eurochallenge, I played with Bologna against my old team of Estudiantes. I thought history would repeat itself. I am very happy for Frankfurt that they won the title. They were my 2nd pick after my own team of course.

Throwback Interview with Ilian Evtimov

Technology is moving fast. It may be just a couple of years ago, but there was a time when Basketball Bundesliga games could not be watched online. Streaming games live was too expensive or technically not possible. Nowadays all you have to do to watch every Basketball Bundesliga game is to subscribe to Telekom Basketball, pay 10 Euros per month and enjoy every game live and re-live. But there was a time in the early years of this millennium when basketbal fans had to sit in front of their computers and watch the live score reload every thirty seconds. The alternative for that was listening to radio broadcasts. In Germany Miles Schmidt-Scheuber was one of the first pioneers, who drove around Germany and broadcasted games live via webradio. He is still around and last year broadcasted his 500th game. From 2006 until 2013 he was host of the first ever weekly Basketball show on German radio. The two hour show featured game analysis and interviews with basketball players. In February 2009 he had a special show with former Frankfurt Skyliners player Ilian Evtimov. The bulgarian-french basketball player came to the broadcasting center in Heusenstamm (small city close to Frankfurt/Hesse) and was interviewed for about an hour. German Hoops proudly presents the interview on Ilian’s 35th birthday:

Thanks Evti for talking to German Hoops. Since the loss on the road in Strassburg over Easter, Chalon rebounded and had a 5 game winning streak, but got it snapped with a 100-83 loss against Le Mans. That was the most points Chalon gave up this season. How can one explain a breakdown on defense like that at near the post season?

We are a team that is great on offense. We have been developing great chemistry and confidence on offense. Against Le Mans, despite still being able to score over 80 points, we played very bad defense. Anytime you let a team score 100 points, it becomes very hard to win. That is how most teams feel about us.

How was your time in North Carolina at North Carolina State working out? Did you have any good duels with Deon Thompson this summer?
I was in North Carolina for only two weeks, and it was right after the season so I didn’t run into Deon as I took the time off from basketball right after the season.

Yes it does. It feels great that we could keep the cup in Chalon for a second year. Now we are in the playoffs looking for our third title this season.

When you arrived in Chalon in 2010, did you ever think that you would win so many titles in such a short time?

No not at all. I was very ambitious, because I want to win so much. The titles we didn´t win, we went to the final.

Chalon continues to play great basketball. How good does it feel sitting in first place?

Its a great opportunity to be first, especially in a very strong league like France.

You will play against 2011 top France PRO A scorer Rick Hughes. What is always the most important thing you have to do against him on the court?

I know Rick for a few years now, we have played many games against each other. He is a great player, extremely gifted, and it doesn’t matter the age he has, he is always getting numbers. I got a lot of respect for him.
