Simon Cote (I Have a Defined Basketball Philosophy And Am Better Prepared For Success Now)

Simon Cote is a professional basketball coach that started his coaching career at Southern Methodist University (NCAA). He came to Germany in 2002 and coached for Basketball Academy Rhein-Main (Germany) and Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany-2.Bundesliga). He then was an assistant coach for the Frankfurt Skyliners from 2003-2006. He then was a scout for the Denver Nuggets, had a head coaching stint with the Giessen 46ers and was an assistant for three seasons with the Shanghai Dongfang Sharks (China-CBA). He has been spending time in Germany recently and is looking to coach in Germany again. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.

Simon, thanks for talking to German Hoops. You were at some Frankfurt Skyliner games recently. What was it like being back in Frankfurt where you were an assistant coach for four years?

It was different being back again after such a long time. I miss being back here in Frankfurt and also working with the Skyliners. I had great memories with Gordie (Herbert), Murat (Didin) and Charles (Barton.) It was great to see old friends, colleagues and fans again.

You were an assistant under Gordon Herbert back in 2004 helping the Skyliners win the Beko BBL title. When you see Frankfurt play now has anything changed and developed with the style of Gordon Herbert?

I saw two games recently against Enisey Krasnoyarsk and Bremerhaven. It reinforced my belief that Gordie is a great coach. He has coached at the highest levels of European basketball, and you can see that he is very experienced. He has done a great job coaching this young team and developing the young German players.

Philip Neumann Roars The EWE Baskets Oldenburg Past The Brose Baskets Bamberg 72-70 Winning 2015 German Cup

There was a time when winning titles in bunches was as frequent for the Brose Baskets Bamberg was as it has been witnessing complete domination and beast mode of Pittsburgh native Brad Wanamaker in the BBL this season, Oldenburg forward Ricky Paulding showing his constant unselfishness and team player side as his passing abilities can be as dangerous as his scoring at times, or Alba Berlin head coach Serb Sasa Obradovic making his unending hand movements on the sidelines when one could wonder if it’s a secret communication of his own special form of sign language. However the last time that the Brose Baskets Bamberg won a BBL title was in 2013 where they brought home the league title and one has to go back even further to 2012 when they last won a cup title. After seven titles in four years, not winning anymore in Bamberg was a very difficult habit to break for Freak City fans like refraining from beer for a longer of period of time. After a stellar performance in the semi´s against 8 time Beko BBL champion Alba Berlin, where Bamberg showed a nasty combination of physicality and bang, bang, bang intensity the club had to face off against 2009 Beko BBL champion EWE Baskets Oldenburg. Oldenburg made a great comeback against the Telekom Baskets Bonn in the other semi final and just buckled down on defense thrashing most Bonn scoring opportunities in crunch time. Under the watchful eyes of ex Bamberg head coach and new German national head coach Chris Fleming, the Brose Baskets Bamberg were unable to win their first title after he had won seven titles with the Bavarian team as the EWE Baskets staged a late comeback in the five minutes to prevail 72-70 winning their second team title after the 2009 league title. Ex NBA player Casper Ware who could pose as a Chris Rock double with his expression has had some huge games this season, but also less big games, but when it counted he stepped up hitting big shots and winning his first professional title and second after winning the Big West in college. “It feels really good to win a title again as I hadn´t done it in three years. It seems like Bamberg was shocked. Nobody thought that we could win a title, but we always believed in ourselves. We never gave up. Our new coach Mladen Drijencic really brought energy and motivated us. He prepared himself and us for beating Bamberg”, expressed Oldenburg point guard Casper Ware. The Brose Baskets Bamberg played almost flawless basketball against Alba Berlin 24 hours earlier, but just couldn´t shake off Oldenburg as they were always in striking distance and even led at times, but were unable to stop a late fourth quarter push by OLdenburg. Ex Pittsburgh(NCAA) point guard Brad Wanamaker was on MVP course as he combined for 40 points in both games, but in the end was unable to do what he does best score and his teammates also had problems with their shooting accuracy. “We weren´t as efficient as in the semifinal. They made the big plays when they had to and we didn´t. Basketball is a game of runs and usually the team with the last run wins and that is why they are the champs. We really wanted this win. This loss is tough and now we will focus on the BBL”, stressed Bamberg American Brad Wanamaker.

Guards Brad Wanamaker and Casper Ware Power Bamberg and Oldenburg Into The 2015 Beko BBL Cup Final

FC Bayern Munich might be the most famous and well known German sports team, but when it comes to German basketball competition the biggest duel and most intense rivalry of the last 10 years belongs to the two big B´s Alba Berlin and the Brose Baskets Bamberg as they have been battling each other for titles seemingly forever, but currently the Bavarian team having the 9-4 edge, but Alba Berlin has won the last two cups. Both teams are currently also the crème de la crème in the Beko BBL as they are 1 and 2 in the standings boasting a 23-4 record and hoping for bragging rights before the playoffs start in a month. Bamberg came into the game well rested having last played last weekend while Alba Berlin were still digesting their bitter 71-64 Euroleague loss to top Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv 48 hours ago as they were denied the ticket to the quarterfinals as the experience factor played a massive role in crunch time. Both teams had battled only one time this season as 6 time Beko BBl champion Brose Baskets Bamberg destroyed Alba Berlin 98-69 as the Bavarian team shot out the light Stephen Curry style hitting 13 three pointers and displaying six players in double figures. Alba Berlin was unable to crack the Bamberg defense hitting only four three pointers and presenting splitting head aches for head coach Sasa Obradovic all night long. Even though this semi final was the top game, it started at the unconventional time of 5.00pm a time where Brad Wanamaker or Reggie Redding are usually getting ready for a light pre game snack while the other semi final of the EWE Baskets Oldenburg and Telekom Baskets Bonn was the top draw at 8:00 pm to help cater to the home crowd. Despite a small lull in the third quarter, the Brose Baskets Bamberg controlled the game for 33 minutes and easily reached the final disposing of Alba Berlin 86-65. “We played very aggressive defense, had nice ball movement and took the lead quickly. We allowed Alba Berlin to come back, but we stepped up our defense in the fourth quarter and were able to finish the game in fine fashion”, stressed Brose Baskets Bamberg forward Karsten Tadda. “We were a bit tired coming into the game and Bamberg limited our pick and roll and just didn´t let us play to our strength. We played more intensive defense in the third quarter being able to come back. We decided to stop pick and roll and just banged the ball inside to Mclean and Banic and that worked. But they came back hitting big three pointers and Dalibor Bagaric hurt us inside”, stressed Alba Berlin guard Ismet Akpinar. The Brose Baskets Bamberg were led by Brad Wanamaker with 21 points. American Ryan Thompson added 18 points. Elias Harris and Trevor Mbakwe added 12 points a piece and Janis Sterlnieks contributed 11 points. Alba Berlin were led by their big men Marko Banic and Leon Radosevic with 11 points a piece. Jonas Wolfarth-Botterman gave energy from the bench with 10 points. Bamberg had a hot shooting night shooting 53% from the field and 41% from outside while Alba Berlin shot 40% from the field and couldn´t hit the side of a barn from downtown shooting a miserable 12%. Alba Berlin did win the rebound battle 30-29, but had 13 turnovers while Bamberg had 11 turnovers.

It´s Worth It To Observe The Allen Ballerina Moves And Mcelroy Smerk As Much As Possible With Braunschweig Before It´s Forever Gone

Much has happened in the past five years since the 10,7 time that Derrick Allen achieved on a Frankfurt track as he came one possession from winning his first BBL league title with Frankfurt being denied in Bamberg, playing two seasons for top German team Alba Berlin where he got to know the perks of head coach Luka Pavicevic and why Gordon Herbert is his twin in work ethic and played with the road runner equivalent in basketball point guard Dashaun Wood and then left Germany for the first time in eight years moving over the boarder to Belgium to present his slick ballerina moves and returned back to Germany last season to Bremerhaven where he played for the Eisbaeren which in English is a polar bear something that he would never see back home in Alabama, but could visit in the zoo there. This season Allen who can be called a German basketball country trotter as he also played with BG Karlsruhe and Leverkusen at the start of his career is playing in Braunschweig. Allen was 29 years old when he posted the time of 10,7 seconds in the 100 meter category in preseason and back then I was joking that the Alabama native could be a dark horse Usain Bolt opponent in the 2012 London Olympics. He probably has lost a few tenth of a second on a 100 meter sprint, but when the 203cm forward is off to the races in transition then he can still get up the floor with the best of them even now in 2014. Just how Frankfurt Skyliner legend Pascal Roller perfected the fast break three pointer or Boston Celtic legend Kevin Mchale the fade away jumper, Derrick Allen has perfected his dancing in the zone that resembles a ballerina going work that has made numerous defenders get as dizzy as patrons getting onto the Drop of fear ride at Wonderland Park in Texas. He may not out dance the world famous ballerina dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, but on the basketball court in Germany it has done damage since 10 years. Allen has used his ballerina moves to near perfection and it is something he learned through the years, that one could almost warrant a patent for the Derrick Allen ballerina move in 2009. “All the post moves that I use, I got from watching different big men, while I was growing up. I think, I used them so much is because most of the post guys I go against are 10-20 kilo’s heavier than me. So I got to use my quickness, and fakes too keep the defenders off balance, but I hope I will be able to use those moves more this season”, stressed Allen. The 34 year old American had his lowest scoring season last season, but is still a pest to defend on the court and seems to be getting better by age. “His game is so unorthodox and he just out works his opponent on every play wheather it’s a loose ball, rebound or steal. He is always first to the ball”, said ex Maccabii Tel Aviv guard Ricky Hickman. However it isn’t his sprinting in the open court or his ballerina dancing that has kept him active at the age of 34, but his unbelievable relentless work ethic that has kept him on the court and not on the couch on the weekends watching NBA basketball in the States. He didn’t start to work hard when he started getting older, but has been doing it since the start as his dedication and focus to the game of basketball is immaculate as he is the real definition of a professional. Because of his hard work, his stats haven’t suffered with age, but continued to stay consistent which has enabled him to get interest from clubs each off season. Last season with Bremerhaven, he played 34 games: 11.1ppg, 4.8rpg, 1.4apg, FGP: 48.5%, FT: 69.5%. This season with Braunschweig he comes from the bench backing up American Tim Abromaitis and is averaging 8,0ppg and 3,2rpg and as always has a superb percentage from the field at 55,6%. After being in the top 10 in scoring for many years in the Beko BBL and even being the league scoring champion in 2007 with Leverkusen, Allen doesn’t have to put up 16 and 8 stats each weekend. His experience, work ethic and advice that he can give the kids is more than worth his pay check. He hasn´t slown down as this season he is averaging 10,0ppg and 4,3rpg while shooting 59% from the field. His highlights this season have been scoring in double figures 12 times with two double doubles and a season high 25 points against Oldenburg. It will be interesting to see how much longer he will play, because from the fitness level, he could probably play until he was 50, but after a certain point family becomes the first priority for a player with age. The side kick of Allen who is playing his 11 year in Germany is Immanuel Mcelroy. Mcelroy like Allen gives the club important experience and is a mentor for the young players. Mcelroy like Allen is from the south from Texas, around the same age of 35 only four months older, played a season at Alba Berlin, but has won 5 titles in Germany to 0 with Allen. Mcelroy won 2 cups with Cologne and one league title and won a cup and league title with Alba Berlin. Like Allen, Imac as he is called may be 34, but still belongs to the top defenders in the league and is always good for filling the stat sheets. He is playing his fourth season with Braunschweig and last season played 33 games: 10.9ppg, 3.8rpg, 3.2apg, FGP: 56.1%, 3PT: 31.7%, FT: 77.1%. This season Mcelroy is averaging 7,4ppg, 3,4rpg and 3,1apg. He has scored in double figures eight times and best scoring game was 20 points. Another difference to Mcelroy and Allen is that he started a family when he was already in college and doesn´t seem to slow down with age and kids. Seeing these two guys play together on a team is a gem and should be cherished as long as possible, because one never knows when the ballerina moves and famous Imac smerk wont be on the court anymore.

Logan Stutz(ETB Wohnbau Baskets Essen) We Need The Right Energy And Atmosphere In The Gym. Then We Just Have To Take Care Of Business Against Nurnburg

He started his basketball career at Washburn (NCAA2). In 2011-2012, he was a rookie and played for  BG Topstar Leitershofen/Stadtbergen (Germany-ProA, starting five): 11 games: 16.1ppg, 4.5rpg, 1.2spg, FGP: 68.1%, 3PT: 12.5%, FT: 76.8%, left in Dec.’11, in Jan.’12 moved to WBC Raiffeisen Wels (Austria-A Bundesliga): 16 games: 4.2ppg, 2.3rpg.He spoke to German Hoops after the big 60-57 win.

Logan congrats on the huge 60-57 win in game three against Rent4Office Nurnberg. How quiet was the Nurnberg arena as the buzzer sounded. How much did the saying “Anything in basketball is possible” take effect in the last three minutes?

Thanks Miles! It was a tight game all second half, we had our moments and they had theres, but once again the execution down the stretch its what sealed the victory for us, even when our backs where against the wall.

With 2.52 to play Essen was down 57-54 as anything was possible. Essen closed out the game with a 6-0 run. It wasn´t pretty, but Essen came up big when they had to. What was key at the end for Essen to come away with a real tough win on the road?

It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win. The key was staying positive and fighting every second that we could. It came down to defense and a few offense of rebounds. We controlled the hustle plays in the last 3 minutes.

Chris Alexander was big again getting two buckets inside in the last minute. How much does his experience and play infect his teammates throughout a game?

He leads us, and he does a great job. He knows when to go get a bucket and when to get people involved. His experience and will to win has become contagious on the team.

Essen kept Hobbs and Pena to 1/13 shooting in the game. This has to have been a huge key since had they hit a few more buckets then Nurnberg would have won. Did the team as a whole key in on them more or was it just great team defense?

The credit goes to the team, but starts with the guards. Our guards have been applying pressure at a high intensity and they expect everyone else to follow.

This was a defensive game as both teams had poor shooting percentages. Essen has improved their defense in each game throughout the series. How proud are you of how the club has buckled down on defense as the series moved on?

We spend much of our time focused on scouting and our defensive rules and I give a lot of the credit to our coaches for putting us in the right position defensively to be successful. Its good to see the it all come together and get better.

The Wohnbau Baskets Essen were down 1-0, but now are 2-1 and one game away from a date with the Giessen 46ers in the semi finals. How has Essen grown as a team in this series?

Its been about focus and toughness. Everyone in this league can do it it just comes down to the right timing the right focus and the right effort and right now it is working for Essen

In 24 hours Essen can close out the series. Both teams know each other in and out now. What will be key for getting by Nurnberg in game four on your home court?

Our home court advantage is big, we need the right energy and atmosphere in the gym. Then we just have to take care of business.

Wurzburg was swept 3-0 by the s.Oliver Baskets Wurzburg. What was your overall impression of the season of new team Hamburg Towers?

I only got to play them once this year and it was in Hamburg. I think the potential for basketball in Hamburg is amazing. They had a great gym, great fans, and great city. I think one area they would have wanted to improve on was finishing the year strongly. The pro A is a long season and mostly one game a week. The coaches and organizations have a hard job making sure their players are still at a high level in the last few months. I am sure they will improve on this in the next years.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

Interstellar

Logan Stutz(ETB Wohnbau Baskets) We Have A Second Chance That Makes Us A Very Dangerous Team And Nuernberg Knows It

Logan thanks for talking to German Hoops A big 76-73 win against Nurnberg in game two at home. How motivated was the team after the poor 87-59 loss?

Right after the game the team was pretty low. We needed some life. Gary Johnson really challenged everyone to step up and show ourselves in the next game. I think our response was a move in the right direction with more to come.

On what things did the team want to concentrate more on in game two and were able to do?

As a team we made many mental mistakes in game 1. We all knew what we needed to do but for some reason we were slow in our reactions. We had a very informative walk through where we cleared up everything that really helped us hold them under 75 points. It came down to just executing the small things.

Game two was a very close battle, but in the end Essen Had the better nerves. What was key at the end for getting the win?

The key was staying focused and limiting mistakes late in the 4th quarter. We still made errors during the game but late in the 4th quarter we grabbed rebounds, controlled the ball and hit our free throws.

Describe the last seconds as American Josh Young missed both free throws. What was Essen expecting to happen with these free throws? It seemed like Young unexpectedly missed the first free throw?

For starters I think we made a great choice to foul them and not let them get the 3 pointer off, because Josh just hit a 3 pointer. We were expecting him to hit the first and miss the second. The moment was intense and the crowd was great, he missed the first shot just a bit long. We still needed a solid box out and rebound on the second shot because we knew he would miss, and we executed well.

It seems like Chris Alexander is relied on to always having to score. He only had 10 points. How big were American Devin White and German Michael Jost taking some of the bulk from the shoulders of Alexander?

We have so much talent and experience on this team. Chris is a great leader and shows up to play every day. Any time we get multiply guys contributing we become a very dangerous team, and that’s how we will make a late run into late April and early May.

How valuable was increasing your team intensity and physicality down low as Essen made amends for losing the rebound battle in game one?

We knew we need to be tougher. Everyone stepped up guards and bigs were all getting in and getting the job done on the boards.

Stealing a game in Nurnberg would be so important. What will be key to taking the 2-1 series lead on Friday on the road?

Its a must! It wont come easy as they are a very good team at home, but we made a mistake in the first game that we wont make again. We have a second chance, that makes us a very dangerous team, and Nuernberg knows it.

You played 17 games for Baunach averaging 11,6ppg and 4,2rpg. When you look back at this experience what positives could you take from your short Bavarian stay?

There was a lot of positives. I got a chance to practice a few times with Brose, I got to play with some great up and coming German talent, and I got to meet some great people and make some great connections.

You closed out the regular season scoring in double figures in your last four games. How have you come to terms with a new role and how difficult was it coming back to an old team so late in the season?

I knew coming to Essen that things would be different then last time. Essen was an established team this season and I was excited they wanted me back. I needed to find a way to contribute as a leader on and off the court. There has been ups and downs just like any situation but through time I found my role here and I love it.

You were very effective scoring nine points and getting three rebounds in 13 minutes. How vital is it being an effective player now and making the prefect offensive decisions?

This is my role/job. I need to be effective in my minutes. Some nights l get more minutes some nights I get less,. I just need to make sure when I am in the game I am working hard and contributing, offense is my strength and everyone knows thats where I can contribute but I need to be active and surprise people with my defense too.

When you look back at the 2015 NCAA tournament what were the big surprises for you?

I think it was a great tournament as always. I thought Kentucky would win it all, but the thing I was most excited about (not a surprise to me) was seeing Wichita State beat Kansas.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

American Sniper

Thanks Logan for the chat.

Will Reinke(Gotha) 24 Has Been A Good Number For Me But The Best Number Would Be 3 Wins So We Will Be Focused Friday For The Sweep Against Jena

Will Reinke is a 24 year old 208cm center from Lawton, Oklahoma that signed with German Pro A team  BiG Oettinger Rockets Gotha (Germany-ProA) for the 2014-2015 season. Last season he played for  CS Energia Rovinari Targu Jiu (Romania-Liga Nationala): 6 games: 6.7ppg, 5.3rpg, 1.5spg, 1.0bpg, FGP: 48.4%, FT: 83.3%. He started his basketball career in 2009 for  Stephen F. Austin (NCAA): 29 games: 4.1ppg, 3.1rpg, 1.0bpg. He then transferred to Oklah.Christian (NCAA2) playing his last three years there and as a senior played 26 games: 19.0ppg, 9.6rpg, 2.5bpg, FGP: 57.3%, 3PT: 41.7%, FT: 74.3%. He spoke to German Hoops before game three against Science City Jena.

Will thanks for talking to German Hoops Is the number 24 your second favorite number this season after 34? In game one you scored 24 points in 24 minutes and had a ranking of 24.

Hey Miles, 24 has been a good number for me the first 2 games of the series. But the best number would be 3 wins so we will be focused on Friday to go for the sweep against Jena

You saved your best for the playoffs in game one with your best scoring game of the season. How much more added self confidence can a player get in the playoffs?

Playoffs gives players a renewed energy. It’s a long season and when the playoffs finally get here, it’s not only confidence that gets a boost, it’s energy for sure.

Congrats on the huge 75-65 win. Gotha leads the best of five series 2-0. Could one say that that massive second half comeback in game one kind of crossed over into game two as Gotha was focused from the start?

The 2nd half of game 1 definitely carried over to the start of game 2. We had one of our best starts of the season and made it difficult for Jena early. Making a big comeback like we did can change momentum for the series, especially because we did it on the road.

With the score deadlocked at 63-63, Gotha stayed together and finished the game on a 20-10 run. Was German Albert Kuppe worthy of getting a round of drinks that night for his stellar play down the stretch?

Haha Albert was definitely worthy of a round! When Al is on like he was then we really try to get him the ball. He makes the defense adjust and give less help which opens up the paint for us to get inside.

Gotha has held Science City Jena to 64 points in the last three games. Could one say that you have their number on defense, or is that surprise effect always possible from them on the offensive end?

I think that our defense is what we pride ourselves on. We haven’t been perfect in the series, but we have had great stretches of defense. We believe we can hold any team below their average if we play our kind of D.

Besides another solid defensive effort, what was the biggest strength of Gotha during the 40 minutes in the game two win?

The biggest strength in game 2 was our depth. We had 5 guys in double figures and everybody was shooting the ball with confidence when they had a shot, and creating for other guys when they didn’t.

Gotha is 4-0 vs Science City Jena this season. The Jena season is on the line and will fight until the end. Gotha is in the drivers seat. Besides containing American David Hicks better what will be key for getting the series sweep?

Containing Hicks will be a big point of emphasis for us, but as always against Jena keeping the turnovers down is huge. They thrive off getting steals and easy baskets off those TO’s.

You have scored in double figures 20 times this season and made the transition from Romania well to Germany. What has been the biggest hurdle on the court that you still have needed to adjust the most too in the German Pro A?

The biggest hurdle I’ve had to adjust to is probably being hesitant sometimes on the court. Coach Ensminger and Esterkamp have really helped me with making decisions and not being hesitant in certain situations.

Head coach Chris Ensminger continues to do a great job with the team. What has impressed you most about his defensive schemes this season?

Coach has a great philosophy defensively. We are prepared not only for every players tendencies, but we are ready for any situation on defense and know what we need to do to make it a tough situation for the offense.

What were the biggest surprises for you at the 2015 NCAA tournament?

The biggest surprise for me was Kentucky losing. I thought they were WAY to good to lose to anybody. But it’s March Madness anything can happen.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

The last movie I saw was “Old School”. A Classic!!! Gotta love Frank the Tank.

Thanks Will for the chat.

Alex Tyus (Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv) Experience And Wanting It A Bit More Than Alba Berlin Was Key For The Win

Alex Tyus is a 27 year old 203cm center from St Louis, Missouri playing his fourth professional season and second with Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv. He started his basketball career in 2007 with Florida(NCAA) and played there until 2011 playing a total of 142 NCAA games and as a senior played 36 games: 9.1ppg, 6.2rpg, FGP: 50.0%, 3PT: 33.3%, FT: 63.0%. In 2011 he turned professional and played for Maccabi Ashdod (Israel-Premier League): 30 games: 12.6ppg, Reb-3(8.5rpg), Blocks-5(1.4bpg), FGP-3(67.5%), FT: 47.2%. In the 2012-2013 season he played for FoxTown Cantu (Italy-SerieA): 43 games: 9.4ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.1bpg, FGP-3(65.8%), FT: 49.6%; Euroleague: 10 games: 8.1ppg, 3.7rpg, 1.0bpg, FGP: 58.6%, FT: 48.1%. Last season he moved to Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv (Israel-Winner League): 31 games: 9.3ppg, 6.6rpg, Blocks-2(1.6bpg), FGP-2(68.5%), FT: 52.5%; Euroleague: 27 games: 7.7ppg, 5.0rpg, Blocks-5(1.1bpg), FGP-1(72.3%), FT: 52.6%. He spoke to German Hoops following the 73-64 win in Berlin against Alba Berlin

Alex thanks for talking to German Hoops. Congrats on the huge 73-64 win to advance to the Euroleague quarterfinals. It was a tight game throughout. Did Maccabi Tel Aviv just want it a bit more at the end?

Yes I felt we wanted it a bit more than Alba Berlin at the end. I felt that our experience carried us over at the end. We have a lot of guys that have been in big games and know what it takes to win tough games.

With four minutes to play Maccabi Tel Aviv led 66-63 and closed out the game with a big 7-1 run sparked by a Devin Smith three pointer. What was key for getting the win at the end?

Our defense got us the win. We played very well and rebounded well and limited their offensive rebounds. Devin Smith was also big. He hit many big shots and kept us in the game all night long.

Marquez welcome back to Germany. What has been your response to the shocking news today that Indiana Pacer Chris Copeland was stabbed outside a New York club. Does this make you think twice about the next time your out on the town?

I heard about that today. Something like this doesn´t make me think twice about it. Things like this always happen. You just have to be careful about your surroundings.

Last weekend there was violence in Turkey as a soccer team was shot at when they were in their bus and a few weeks ago Turkish fans caused havoc in the O2 arena in Berlin causing the game to start a hour later. What has been your experience of hardcore fans in Israel this season?

My experiences in Israel have been positive this season. Fans there are very passonite about basketball. Our fans support us very good. I haven´t experienced anything crazy this season in Israel.

Sean Mosely(Crailsheim Merlins) Brings The Williams Mindset Of You Gotta Believe And Competing Each Day

Even if his first two seasons in Poland and Italy didn´t earn him any hardware, the 12 and 11th place finishes in the standings were nothing to brag about or even want to store in his memory bank, but the third season for American Sean Mosely has been one to forget. Mosley is a 25 year old 192cm swing man that is a very good scorer, with great 1-vs-1 skills and shooting range from outside the arch. He was never a top scorer at Maryland(NCAA) simply because there was a lot of great talent there with Landon Millburne and future NBA players like Grevis Vazquez and Alex Len. IN his first two seasons in Poland and Italy he was fifth and third in league scoring and this season he is playing for doormat team Crailsheim Merlins and isn´t in the top ten scoring in the BBL, but top scorer for his team once again displaying that he can compete at any level and any country. “ I have been playing basketball for many years and played at a great university so coming to the BBL wasn’t a problem. I feel comfortable from the first game I played”, stressed Sean Mosely. The American is also second in rebounds and assists on the team and does so much more that isn´t visable. “I like doing the little things that don’t show up on the stat sheet as well”, expressed Sean Mosely. Having the right attitude also has helped Mosely be successful with his play wherever he has played. “Gary Williams always told us to believe in yourself. He pushed us in practice to compete each day and that’s the mind set I had since I left college”, warned Sean Mosely. The Crailsheim Merlins came to Frankfurt at the start of 2015 carrying a dismal 2-13, but since then have a 4-8 record and are giving teams like Tuebingen a run for the money for that last ticket to stay in the league. Big back to back victories against the Mitteldeutscher BC and medi Bayreuth have helped their self confidence. “Lack of experience hasn’t been the reason, teams are just having more guys coming off the bench. We usually play 6 or 7 guys. I think it comes down to who wants it more. We gave up a lot points but now we are doing a much better job on the defense end of the court. Teams may score but we give our all”, warned Sean Mosely. Mosely will surely never forget FC Bayern Munich who scored a combined total of 213 points in the two meetings or the many close loses like to Braunschweig or to Bonn by not more than a combined score of six points, but what he probably will always remember and tell his grandchildren one day on Christmas eve in front of the fire was the famous trip to Hagen that was halted by snow and a snow covered high way where the team jogged back to the nearest exit to hop onto mini vans and Jannik Freese boasting his newest winter time shades. “Jannik always thought he was the coolest guy on our team. I always asked him why are you cool? Me and him had a good bond”, added Sean Mosely. One thing is for sure the Crailsheim Merlins are playing a lot better basketball now and will fight until the finish to stay in the league with Sean Mosely infecting his teammates with his always believe attitude.

If one looks back at the last 20 years of the Crailsheim Merlins basketball history, it has been a journey of changing the level of leagues similar to how Afghani-German Achmadschah Zazai has been changing teams the last 10 years. In the late 90s, the club made a rapid surge moving up from lower leagues like the Landes Liga to the Oberliga and to the Regionaliga in 1998. They reached the second Bundesliga in 2001 where they played until 2008 where they went down to the newly established Pro B, but stayed there only two years as they moved back up to the new established Pro A in 2009. After some years in the middle of the standings, they then finished at position six in 2013 and last season moved up to the Beko BBL thanks to a second place finish. In the German Pro A final, the ylost to BG Goettingen, but automatically moved up to the Beko BBL and were able to pass all ramifications to start in the highest German league. However their start into their first beko BBL season has been tough as before Christmas had arrived had already dismissed American head coach Willie Young and Americans Jared Newson and Justin Tubbs. They went into the season with the lowest budget in the league and were able to hold 4 players from the team from last season and mostly added players to the team from lower leagues. The club held Americans Steve Johnson and Joston Crow who were important parts to the club last season as well as German role players Jonathan Moore and Andreas Kronhardt. The club added interesting pieces to this seasons puzzle with scoring point guard Garrett Sim, swing man and explosive scorer Sean Mosley, center project Chris Otule and Germans Jannik Freese and Joshiko Saibu who have been big surprises showing that when given minutes can be solid players at the Beko BBL level. The team recently signed scoring guard Chad Timberlake who has BBL experience. Crailsheim is a team that likes to play fast and aggressive basketball, but this season teams haven´t been impressed by their hungriness as most teams have been able to devour them like helps chicks lost from their mothers.

When looking closer at the Crailsheim roster, it is led by Sean Mosley who is a 25 year old 192cm guard from Baltimore that is playing his third professional season. He is a very good scorer, with great 1-vs-1 skills and shooting range from outside the arch. Can become a star player at European league level. Last season in his second season he made a name for La Fortezza Recanati (Italy-Lega Due Silver) playing 28 games: Score-3(19.9ppg), 6.3rpg, 2.4apg, Steals-3(1.8spg), FGP: 49.7%, 3PT: 34.0%, FT: 80.6%. As a rookie he played for Kotwica Kolobrzeg (Poland-TBL) playing 32 games: Score-5(15.5ppg), 6.3rpg, 2.5apg, Steals-5(1.6spg), FGP: 41.9%, 3PT: 34.1%, FT: 71.7%. He started his basketball career at Maryland (NCAA) where he played a total of 132 NCAA games and as a senior played 32 games: 10.2ppg, 5.0rpg, 2.1apg, 1.0spg, FGP: 40.0%, 3PT: 36.4%, FT: 83.5%. Garrett Sim is a 24 year old 185cm point guard from Portland, Oregon playing his third professional season. Played the point in his last collegiate season, but he can play the SG position too without any problem. Has great scoring skills and a very good outside shooting range, with quick release and a clean shooting mechanic. A smart player, has a great basketball IQ and personality. He had a solid rookie season with Science City Jena, but really had his break out season last season playing 33 games: Score-1(20.8ppg), 2.4rpg, Assists-5(5.7apg), Steals-5(1.7spg), FGP: 52.2%, 3PT: 40.1%, FT: 89.5%. He started his basketball career in 2008 with Oregon and played a total of 133 NCAA games and as a senior played 31 games: 12.2ppg, 2.5rpg, 2.5apg, 1.0spg, FGP: 52.5%, 3PT: 46.2%, FT: 85.9%.

Chris Otule is a 25 year old 211cm center that was born in Houston, Texas and is playing his rookie season for the Crailsheim Merlins this season. Injuries like breaking his foot twice or tearing his ACL slowed his development as a college player and playing with a prosthetic left eye wasn´t easy either, but the American was able to withstand all hurdles. Only one part of his body has been 100% it seems. “My heart has been 100% since I have always been breathing”, stressed Chris Otule. Despite having a prosthetic left eye it hasn´t driven him back and God has kept him marching forward like a warrior. “My prosthetic left eye never gives me issues because I was born with one so it’s all I know. If I was born with two and lost one that’d be different. I’ve kept faith in God and I’m a big believer. It’s helped me stay sane and get through. God gets all the credit”, added Chris Otule. As a senior at Marquette (NCAA) he played 30 games averaging 5.8ppg, 4.2rpg, 1.0bpg, FGP: 60.2%, FT: 54.8%. Head coach Buzz Williams at Marquette was a driving force in helping Otule get by all obstacles to reach the Beko BBL. “He always told me to take advantage of every day, never let a day pass you by where you felt like you didn’t do something to get closer to your goals  Other influences are Brad Autry and Jerry Wainwright”, expressed Chris Otule. This season with Crailsheim, the American has been losing a lot while getting a touch for the Beko BBL while averaging 6,8ppg and 4,4rpg in 16,5 minutes per game. He has scored in double figures three times including a 13 point effort against the Artland Dragons. His defense is also a big part of his game and he has registered two blocks against Goettingen, TBB Trier and Artland. As a rookie he is just trying to learn the ropes especially under the basket where German veteran Jannik Freese had won the starting job after being a journey and back up player his whole career. No matter how many more games Crailsheim win this season or how many buckets and rebounds Otule grabs, he will always be an inspiration for what he has achieved with all his hardships. For kids who suffer eye ailments, Otule always has time for and too listen to what they have gone through. “All the stories have a huge impact in my life  that’s one of the reasons I play  to prove to people that no matter your “limitations” and I put quotes cause that word shouldn’t exist, you can do whatever you want in life”, added Chris Otule.

Chad Timberlake is a 31 year old 194cm point guard from Brooklyn, New York playing his ninth professional season. He is a very talented point guard with good physical size (6’4″,208 lbs.) and toughness, he can play the shooting guard position, if that is what is needed for the team. Chad is the floor general with excellent court vision and he is a natural team leader. Last season he played for Falco-Szova KC-Szombathely (Hungary-A Division) playing 30 games: 14.9ppg, 4.8rpg, 2.9apg, 1.5spg, FGP: 62.6%, 3PT: 27.1%, FT: 63.0%. He has gathered experience playing three years in Hungary as well as in the Czech Republic and Israel. He played at Fairleigh Dickinson (NCAA) from 2002-2006 and as a senior played 29 games: 15.2ppg, 5.6rpg, 4.1apg, 1.4spg, FG: 49.3%, 3PT: 40%, FT: 65%. Joshiko Saibu is a 25 year old 188cm point guard playing his third season in the Beko BBL. He started his basketball career in 2008 for ALBA Berlin II (Regionalliga). In the 2010-2011 season he played for Alba Berlin and their Pro B team playing 2 Beko BBL games and 2 Eurocup games. He played for TBB Trier from 2011-2013 and last season for the LTi Giessen 46ers (ProA) playing 38 games: 13.0ppg, 5.2rpg, 3.1apg, 1.6spg, FGP: 48.4%, 3PT: 32.1%, FT: 67.2%. He loves to penetrate and is a hard nosed defender at all times. Josten Crow is a 27 year old 193cm swing man from Spring, Texas playing his third professional season and third for Crailsheim. Last season for Crailsheim he played 39 games: 8.9ppg, 2.4rpg, 1.5apg, FGP: 54.2%, 3PT: 40.9%, FT: 76.8%. He played at Sam Houston St. (NCAA) playing a total of 115 NCAA games and as a senior played 31 games: 12.7ppg, 5.3rpg, 3.5apg, 1.8spg, FGP: 42.3%, 3PT: 32.1%, FT: 70.0%. Crow is a guy that does a little of everything very well, but nothing perfect. The club got Walter Lemon and Andriy Agafnov during the season. Lemon is a 22 year old 190cm guard from Chicago that is playing his rookie season after starting the season with Egis Kormend (Hungary-A Division, starting five): EuroChallenge: 6 games: 13.0ppg, 2.8rpg, 3.8apg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 38.3%, 3FGP: 22.2%, FT: 58.8%; A Division: 12 games: 18.6ppg, 3.6rpg, 3.5apg, 2.7spg, 2FGP: 59.1%, 3FGP: 35.1%, FT: 49.3%. He played at Bradley(NCAA) from 2010-2014 and as a senior played 32 games: 18.0ppg, 3.1rpg, 3.9apg, 2.4spg, FGP: 45.8%, 3PT: 29.0%, FT: 74.6%.
