Caleb Willis is a 188cm point guard that just completed a four year college career at Pepperdine. He played  a total of 91 NCAA games starting 51 games. In his four years he averaged 3,7ppg, 2,5rpg and 2,2apg. In his senior year he played 15 games: 5.9ppg, 3.8rpg, 4.7apg, FGP: 51.0%, 3PT: 40.0%, FT: 51.4%. His highlights in his last season were  started 14 of 15 games, then missed the final 15 contests. Led, or shared the team lead, in assists in 12 of his 15 games . Scored 12 points at Utah Valley (12/1), playing a career-high 41 minutes and adding a career-high-tying nine rebounds. Scored 11 points at Hawaii (12/8). Had five or more assists eight times, including a career-high-tying eight vs. Washington State (11/16) . Had six points and eight rebounds in his next-to-final game vs. Gonzaga (1/3). Recorded a career-high four steals at Cal State Northridge (11/9). He spoke to German Hoops about his future in basketball.

Caleb thanks for taking some time to talk to eurobasket.com. You just finished your college basketball career at Pepperdine. How excited are you to test the waters overseas and to start your professional basketball career?

I am really excited. Talking with friends like Taylor Darby and Alex Acker that are currently playing overseas, I’m looking forward to experiencing a new culture and playing basketball in a new place.

You are from Georgia. You met Kevin Garnett in a gym there at Pepperdine. It is always amazing to see players liking a player that plays another position. What made Garnett so appealing to you as a kid?
Kevin Garnett plays with an attitude and energy that I have never seen anyone play with. He just loves the game of basketball and his work ethic goes without question.

You played at Stockbridge high school in Georgia averaging 21ppg, 7rpg and 8apg. What were the main reasons for going to a school Pepperdine on the west coast?

The East Coast and West Coast style of play are very different. My mentor, Cloy Barnwell, was from California and wanted me to adopt the West Coast style of play as well. Also I felt that the basketball network was bigger in California than in Georgia.

Before going to Pepperdine, you took a year off and lost 50 pounds. Did you learn discipline in this year off?

I learned a lot of discipline my year off. I became a self -starter. I had to motivate myself and change things within my life. I changed what I ate and the style in which I ate. I also worked out at L.A. fitness twice a day while playing basketball and working a job.

As a freshman, you started the last six games of the season. How important was this phase of your first year and your development?

It was a difficult process my freshman season adjusting while coming off a year sitting out and then not playing most of the year. Those last six games helped me prepare for the next season and what I needed to do to get in the rotation.

You are a point guard. Would it be correct if one would call you a classic point guard?

I wouldn’t call myself a classic point guard but more of a well-rounded guard. I can post inside because I’m usually bigger than most guards at my position while still playing outside the paint.

What is a strength in your game that doesn´t get noticed right away?
My mid-range game. It is something I have worked hard at. I try to display my mid-range game within the context of the offense.

To what NBA player could you compare your game to?
Deron Williams. He is big guard that can really penetrate the defense effectively.

Your career really took off as a junior as you averaged 6.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and a team-best 3.7 assists in 29.4 minutes. What were you able to improve most in this season?

Junior year I moved to the shooting guard due to Lorne’s ACL injury. I improved my playmaking ability and being a well-rounded player because I was involved in making a lot of plays that year.

How tough was it missing the last 15 games of your senior season. Who was able to help you get through this time most?

It was one of the toughest times I have ever had to face in my life. My mother helped me get through it with her motivational encouragement. Two other people who helped me also were Coach Jason Hart, a ten year veteran, who played in the NBA, and Rick Fois, a graduate assistant for Pepperdine. Coach Jason Hart continued to share his knowledge about the game of basketball and life. Rick Fois worked with me day in and day out even after the decision was made that I wouldn’t be returning to play. I am blessed to have met two individuals with such great integrity and willingness to serve.

What was the most important thing that you were able to learn from head coach Marty Wilson?

The most important thing I learned was Defense. I learned how to defend the pick & roll by going under or over depending on the type of player I was guarding. College teams incorporate the pick & roll game more into their offense which will really help me at the next level. He taught me that in order to be a great player I will need to be able to play both ends of the floor effectively.

How disappointing was it never reaching the big show. What was your most memorable achievement with Pepperdine?

It was very disappointing not making it to the NCAA tournament. It was always a dream of mine to make it to the big show. My most memorable achievement was beating ASU my junior year. Beating a PAC-12 team on their home floor was a great feeling.

Who won a one on one in practice, you or Lorne Jackson?
I would have to say we were pretty evenly matched but I won more.

If you had to sell your game how would you describe yourself in a few sentences to make teams interested in you?

I am a competitive leader, who leads by example. I will do what is necessary to win whether that is defending the best player or accepting the pressure to take the last shot to win the game. I play with consistency and bring my competiveness every time I step on the court.

Chase Griffin and Robert Hollywood Turner that went to Pepperdine all played in Germany. What do you know about Germany and would you like to play here?

I don’t know much about Germany. All I know is that Pepperdine has an abroad program in Heidelberg and I always wanted to go. I would definitely like to play there.

How will a summer workout day look like for Caleb Willis?

My day would start with 6:30 a.m. lift at ProActive Sports Performance Lab with Ryan Capretta. Right after that I will have a court workout from 8 a.m.-10a.m. with my trainer A.J. Then I would rest until I have a game in the Drew League or attend an open run around the Los Angeles area or have another court workout.

What was the most crazy shot that you made for Pepperdine that went in?
My 35 foot shot against Arizona State University with the shot clock winding down. It took the life out of the fans in the building.

Jason Boucher is a 33 year old 180cm guard from Menominee, Michigan that just completed his seventh professional basketball season in Germany and second with the Desden Titans in the Pro B. He started his basketball career in 1998 for  Grand Valley State (NCAA2) where he played until 2002. He played a total of 106 NCAA 2 games and as a senior played  28 games: 8.6ppg, 2.8rpg, 5.3apg, 2.4spg, FG: 40.4%, 3Pts: 39.8%, FT: 81.9%. He came to Germany in 2004-2005 and played for  TB Weiden (Germany-Regionalliga). From 2005-2007, he played in the minor leagues in the States for Grand Rapids Flight (IBL), Michigan Mayhem (CBA), Battle Creek Knights (IBL) and  Albany Patroons (CBA). In 2007-2008, he returned back to Germany to play for the Coocoon Baskets Weiden. From 2008-2010, he played for Heimerer Schulen Basket Landsberg (Germany-Regionalliga) where he tore up the league averaging 28,0ppg in those two seasons. In 2010-2011, he played for the  BiG Oettinger Rockets Gotha (Germany-ProB) playing 17 games averaging 15.6ppg, 2.5rpg, 2.5apg, 1.6spg, FGP: 60.7%, 3PT: 36.5%, FT: 84.5%. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.

Jason you just completed your second season with the Dresden Titans helping the team remain in the Pro B with a double overtime game against Konstanz. What memories do you have of that game?

Well it was a crazy game that is for sure. I think we were up 9pts with 3mins to play in regulation and let the lead slip away and they forced overtime. I was proud of my guys for keeping their composure and playing until the final buzzer sounded at the end of that 2nd overtime.

Which player do you remember most in that game Andrew Jones or Frederick Hennigsen? Both had huge games and were the teams MVP´s in the game?

They both had nice games but if I had to pick one I would say Frederick. He was tough to handle that game and he single handedly kept his team in that game!

If you look back at the season was a disappointing team season saved with that amazing win or were you happy coming from the Regionaliga and staying in the PRO B?

Well personally I think it was a frustrating year for us. We had a good enough team to make the playoffs but that double overtime win saved us from moving down. For the first year in the Pro B, staying in the league was our main goal I guess.

You were very dominating in the Regionaliga, but had a very strong season in the Pro B averaging 19.0ppg, 3.0rpg, 2.8apg, 1.8spg, FGP: 53.8%, 3PT: 38.8%, FT: 83.2%. How pleased were you with your season?

It was a different year for me, I was the point guard the first half of the season and then coach moved me to the shooting guard for the 2nd half of the year. My numbers were good but of course being the player and competitor that I am I could of done more to help my team. But I was pleased with my year!

You had no problems making the transition from the Regionaliga to the Pro B. What is the biggest difference between both leagues?

To me I dont really think there is much difference, the German players are more experienced and better in Pro B. I think  can adapt to any level here in Germany and be successful as long as I play my game!

You played against many tough guards in the league, but who was the hardest opponent that you played against?

There were a lot of tough guards this season but if I have to pick one I would say Parker from Leverkussen. He had the freedom and ball in his hands every minute of every game and with his skill set there is not much anyone could do to stop him!

You recently announced that you wont be returning to the Dresden Titans. What was the main reason for making this decision and how difficult was it?

Tell you the truth it wasnt my decision, the team told me they wanted to move in a different direction and concentrate on young German players at my position for the upcoming season. I would have loved to stay in Dresden and finish my career there but its a business and I understand it. I am very thankful for the opportunity the Titan family gave me and it was a wonderful 2 years for me that I will never ever forget!

The fans showed a lot of love by overflowing your email box with many messages. If you look back at your two years in Dresden, what will always remain your fondest memory?

Dresden has the best fans ever and showed me so much love and continue to show me how much they appreciate me. I dont think i will have just one memory that sticks out. My teammates I had in Dresden were like brothers to me, not just teammates. The fans no matter if we were losing or winning showed support and filled the Margon Arena week in and week out. Lots of memories I will cherish forever!
How much fun was it playing with Americans Andrew Jones and Jared Benson. Can these guys make the next step to a higher level?

I had a great time playing with them both. Jared has been a friend of mine for years now and playing with a close friend like that made it feel like home. Drew was great also, great player and even better person. I think they both could play at any level if they given the chance!

You are 32 and want to continue to play at a high level. Do you think that you can still make the step to a higher level at your age?

I just turned 33 three weeks ago, haha. I dont think my age has anything to do with it. I am in the best shape of my life and healthy. I know I can play at any level if given the chance. My work ethic and determination and the way I play the game could help any team that gives me a chance!

You have played in Germany since 2007. Would you be willing to explore and play in another country or is your first preference Germany?

Im a basketball player period. It doesnt matter to me what country I play in given the opportunity. I love Germany dont get me wrong and wouldnt mind staying here but again any country anywhere is good for me

What besides your experience is your biggest asset on the court right now?

My biggest asset now besides my experience I think is probably my basketball I.Q. I know the game inside and out and can adapt to any situation needed. I can score if needed, I can run the team and be an assist guy, whatever the team needs from me I can do.

If you played agent and could sell yourself best in a few sentences to teams why you would be the prefect player for them how would you do it?

Well like I said before my basketball I.Q. is very high and with my experience and the ability to score the basketball and do the little things that doesnt show up on the stat sheet, I think I am the perfect fit for a team that is looking for a point guard or shooter. I also can help develop the younger guards on our team. Not only am I a good basketball player but I think I am a better person and teammate.

What was the first thing that you did when you touched on American soil?

haha the first thing I did was go to Taco Bell, those new cool ranch tacos are amazing

What is going to be something you will do this summer that you haven´t been able to do in a while?

Well my cousin Scott and his fiance Hannah just had their first child and I only got to see the baby(Cam) couple of days over xmas, so I am definately goning spend time with them and mostly just seeing my family and friends for the summer.

How does a summer work out day look like for Jason Boucher?

Well I am pretty busy actually in the summer, I work basketball camps, tournaments for kids all summer, so I am in the gym everyday. Just repetition for me, shooting jumpers, ball handling, you know all the things I been doing since I been in elementary school

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

Actually just went to the movies and watched HangOver 3, haha.

You were a Beko BBL allstar. How did you like the atmosphere in Nurnberg?

It was really incredible. I was so excited to be there and to be able to represent the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven. I hope that I was able to put on a good show.

What international player did you like feeding passes most to in the Beko BBL game?

I was talking with coach Doug Spradley about that. I liked passing the ball to Adam Chubb during the game. He is a very smart and experienced player. I like passing the ball to a big guy that understands the game.

What German player impressed you more during the Allstar game?

I always try to compare myself to a guy at my position. Per Guenther impressed me most. He was the best player that I played against.

Can Jacob Burtschi give you pointers shooting three pointers. What is his biggest strength as a player?

Yes he is a good catch and shoot player. His biggest strength is his energy and hustle play. You can always count on him playing hard on defense.

You have been a very consistent scorer this season. Are you more of a scoring point guard? You have also shown that you can set up your teammates nicely.

I think this confuses people a lot. People see me as a scorer, but I love to pass the ball. I can do both well and I am able to adjust to any situation. I think that I am a versatile player.

What is a strength in your game that doesn´t get noticed right away?

My passing ability. I led team in scoring last season. I am more a scorer and my passing gets overlooked.

The Eisbaeren Bremerhaven had picked up American Kevin Kruger during the season. What did you like most about his game?

He is a very smart and experienced player. He is also a good catch and shoot player that keeps the defense honest. Often the lane is packed so it is good to have a guy like him that I can pass to.

Jacob Burtschi once told me that you talk with your eyes. Where did you get this fire from?

I try to be the best motivator on the court and inspire my teammates. If it means yelling or giving emotion, I just try to do whatever I can to fire up the players.

What is the most important thing that you have learned from head coach Doug Spradley?

He keeps telling me to find my balance between scoring and passing. I have to know when to pick the moments to score and find the open guy.

How was your childhood in Indianapolis?

I had a great childhood. I was allowed to play all sports, but my mom saw quickly my love for basketball and gave her support.

Did you ever visit French Lick?

I know about the history and that Larry Bird  comes from there. I was never there, but only drove by.

What was your sweetest moment of reaching the 2008 NCAA tournament elite 8?

It was just having the thrill of playing in front of thousands and playing against UCLA and NBA guys like Kevin Love, Darren Collison and Russell Westbrook.

What do you remember the most about NBA player Derrick Brown?

I remember his dunks the most. He is so long and athletic. He always made me look good. All that I had to do was put the ball up and he would get it and dunk it.

You played together with New York Knicks forward Chris Copeland in Belgium. Did you know that he would reach the NBA?

No question. His confidence that he had on the floor was amazing in his first season. In the second season, he returned back to Belgium and continued to have that confidence and just killed over there.

You played together with Scott Morrison last season in Poland. Do you gyus ever practice ally-ops.

No we don´t really practice ally-ops. I just give him the ball in his comfort zone and let him do his thing.

What were the most ally ops that you made in a row in practice without missing?

I made 47 or 48 out of 50 in practice.

What was your most crazy shot that you made in your career?

I had a game winning shot in college and a few in the pros.

How does Jacob Burtschi get you to laugh?

We have more a professional relationship. He jokes around more with Scott Morrison and Keith Waleskowski.

What is your favorite place in Bremerhaven?

I like to go to a restaurant called Lloyds. It has very good food.

                What do you get if you have big robust Jared human dressed in black without the Wil Smith men in Black shades with a broom ready to get busy on a long narrow dark tunnel all prepared to sweep, sweep, sweep? Well you would either have the American Homan fitted to clean a dark and dirty chimney or simply a country boy from Iowa that has been introduced to the real world of Europe as a basketball player doing a commercial on how to sweep a top Beko BBL team with Alba Berlin. Not to forget to spruce up the add with lightening quick Tyrese Rice all dapper in his chimney dirt absorbers aiding Homan with his dirty work would have been the most adequate side kick in the chimney or in front of the camera with his quick hands to get more chimneys spotless or to help brighten up the lens with his smile. Rice did a super job time in and time out getting the Alba defense unrattled, but with next opponent Bamberg ready to square off, the cake walk that Munich had against Alba Berlin most likely won´t happen again as the club most likely will have to keep the brooms in the closet as a sweep in this series will be as unlikely as Borussia Dortmund or FC Bayern Munich winning 4-0 in the Champions League final. The only broom that will be used in this series at the end will be to sweep away the tears as the loser will head home as a loser in the Beko BBL pre final final.

                The Fc Bayern Munich-Alba Berlin head to head match up in the quarterfinals was like a final already and the Bavarian team was clearly more prepared. They didn´t hesitate to get going showing the 8 time Beko BBL team their boundries in game one winning easily 88-67. The FC Bayern Munich offense was as smooth rolling as is Arjen Robben when he is dribbling down the wing toward the goal as they shot a hot 54% from the field and 53% from the parking lot and had five players in double figures. They were unable to contain Dashaun Wood or Nihad Djedovic, but kept everyone else in check and held Alba Berlin to under 40% shooting. FC Bayern Munich held their composure and showed mental strength in game two and three winning each game by six points. FC Bayern Munich continued to shoot very well keeping that team balance in scoring intact while Tyrese Rice took charge scoring 41 points in the last two games. FC Bayern Munich also stayed aggressive on defense keeping Alba Berlin to under 40% shooting in game three. One can´t forget that Alba Berlin had the injury bug all season long. “The third quarter really hurt us in the last two games. Munich had some guys step up that made tough shots that usually they would not have made. We played the percentages, but you have to give them credit for having determination and effort to make those difficult shots. Those big shots gave them momentum just to slightly get the lead and hang on. I also think that we had 25 more Euroleague games in our bones and they just had more juice than we did”, stressed 2011 Beko BBL MVP Dashun Wood.

            The Brose Baskets Bamberg came into the series against Phoenix Hagen having to play against every bodies darlings and had no cake walk winning the series 3-1. It was a hard piece of work for Chris Fleming and co, but in the end the 5 time Beko BBL team once again showed despite increased criticism this season that they are past their prime that they are still the team to beat and when time comes to shove, can still shove the best and win big games in uncomfortable environments. That Bamberg can defend has always been known, but Phoenix Hagen had to defend very well to make any strides in this series, but averaged giving up 96 points in the four game series. They won game one 99-74 scoring 37 points in the fourth quarter when they had to and having six players in double figures. Phoenix Hagen won game two 95-89 playing their typical run and gun game scoring just a bit more than their opponent and shooting superbly at 49% from the field and 45% from downtown. Adam Hess burned Bamberg with 28 points and eight three pointers and they annoyed Bamberg and forced them to 20 turnovers. Game three will forever be known as the turning point of the series and didn´t shine a bright light on Bamberg or the league as shortly before halftime, there was a skirmish on the court and three Hagen players were disqualified, but no Bamberg player. The Beko BBL then suspended American Mark mr fantastic four three games. Despite this turmoil, Hagen didn´t sink their heads in the second half kept fighting, but lost 104-94. A big 31 point third quarter and the three ex NBA players Casey Jacobsen, Bostjan Nachbar and Sharod Ford contributed 66 points was just too much for the troops of Ingo Freyer. Everybody was awaiting a big battle in game four in Hagen, but instead Bamberg quickly played like they were three classes above Hagen leading 14-2 early, scored  34 points in the first quarter and never looked back. Phoenix Hagen made their runs, but it didn´t help that American Davin White left early in the fourth quarter with an apparent injury. In the end, Bamberg won with their experience, cleverness and constant pressure on offense and defense and it didn´t help that Hagen had a slow shooting day.

            The clash between FC Bayern Munich and the Brose Baskets Bamberg is by far the most interesting series in the Beko BBL semifinals. FC Bayern Munich play their second final in a row while Bamberg play their first type final in the playoffs. Both teams are ready for a spirited and hard fought playoff series. FC Bayern Munich will be more rested, but also mentally strong after disposing of tough opponent Alba Berlin, while Bamberg couldn´t pull out the lawn chairs in the series against Phoenix Hagen as they had to play against a very focused and annoying team. Both teams split the season series as Bamberg won at home 76-68. It was a very tight game, but Bamberg had a strong fourth quarter holding on too win as both teams didn´t shoot particular well as it was more of a defensive minded game. FC Bayern Munich won at home 85-71 as they were more in control and easily dominated the boards. In this series, the question is can Bamberg win their only title of the season and fourth league title in a row, or is is the time ripe for FC Bayern Munich to make the next step make an upset and reach the Beko BBL final? Both teams have potent offenses whereas Bamberg has the advantage on defense a part of their game they will need to improve in the Munich series with more talent there than in Hagen as they gave up too many points to Phoenix Hagen. Both teams have enough fire power to have 5-7 players in double figures, but if one had to choose two players that will be key then it will be Tyrese Rice and Casey Jacobsen. Rice was on fire in game two and three and he carries the team no matter what while the ex NBA player Jacobsen is the heart and soul of the team. If there is one player that can make the big shot, rebound, assist or big play than it is Jacobsen. Bamberg will have to be mentally strong and simply out grind FC Bayern Munich. The inside game and rebounding could make the difference in this series.Interesting will see who will get the best of whom with Homan,Troutman and Roberts against Ford, Zirbes and Neumann. The experience factor could be crucial in crunch time situations. Both teams are still searching for their groove on defense and who finds it first will benefit. Bamberg has home court advantage, but winning in Bamberg seems to be getting easier and FC Bayern Munich will have to win on the road. This will be a big battle that will go five games. The time is right for FC Bayern Munich to make the next step while an era will end in Bamberg.

 

For many basketball fanatics, the simple basketball charge advancement of the EWE Baskets Olenburg over the Telekom Baskets Bonn seemed like it would be a routine task and as typical as many think Lebron James and the Miami Heat will win back to back titles, seeing Diddy, Beyonce and Chris Brown in the tabloids daily or seeing the New York Yankees a top the MLB east standings, but instead Bonn made life very tough for the 2009 Beko BBL champion taking them to five games. Detroit native and 2004 Pistons draft pick Rickey Paulding already had a big scare in the 2009 finals almost not tasting his first professional title as Bonn was already feisty then with penetration sprinter EJ Rowland, Chris Williams clone Brandon Bowmann,  Ohio athletic wizard Patrick Flomo and shot block monster Ken Johnson giving away the title after blowing a three point lead with 43 seconds to play as Jason Gardner and Je kel Foster won the game with free throws 71-70. Paulding was the top scorer for Oldenburg with 20 points in the game five win in 2009 and in the 2013 game five quarterfinal clash had to watch Chris Kramer lead the team in scoring with 19 points, but Paulding surely remembered that 2009 game and didn´t want to make the game get any more exciting as Oldenburg was able to pull away in the second half and he finished with 12 points hitting some in your face three point clutch shots.  Bonn played their hearts out, but remain known for being unable to win big games or titles, while Paulding skips merrily to a semi final bout with ratiopharm Ulm.

The cities Munich and Ulm have very little in common in that Munich is a lot bigger, might  be the most known German city in the world and is just  more visited because of the famous October fest beer party while Ulm is  a lot smaller, has the beautiful  gothic minister and best player in the league with John Bryant. Ratiopharm Ulm and FC Bayern Munich have very little in common in basketball as well, except that both teams got to the semi finals as quickly as Bamberg guard Anton Gavel fires a shot to the basket. Both swept their opponents and not only Jared Homan and Tyrese Rice would look dapper in chimney sweeper attire, but imagine the sweeping duo of John Bryant and Per Guenther sweeping that chimney clean to perfection. If it is just sweeping out a chimney or actually getting behind the camera to make an advertisement on how to blow away an opponent without losing a game then it would be these two Ulmer players  that could probably convince the most people with their two abilities in the chimney or on the court as they both can be as dominating as a Lebron James and Dwayne Wade when they need to be. Both Ulm players remember the final sweep loss to the Brose Baskets Bamberg last season and decided to get some practice against the Artland Dragons. FC Bayern Munich most likely will need a horse shoe if they want to sweep Bamberg as that happening is as unlikely as a non German team winning the Champions league. However with Ulm very much rested and Oldenburg only having 72 hours rest before game one against the Schwaben  team, the chances of Ulm to sweep an Oldenburg team is a lot greater, but in reality it is most likely that it wont happen. Bryant and Guenther will just be happy to reach a second final in a row and if necessary keep their sweeping uniform in their closet.

The Ewe Baskets Oldenburg used their home court advantage to the fullest winning every game at home while the Telekom Baskets Bonn played them tough at home winning  88-80 and 88-82. In both losses in Bonn, Oldenburg shot very poorly and Jared Jordan was able to control the game while his team shot very well. Oldenburg had no problems winning game one and three at home while winning game three by 30 points. The thin bench at times left them hanging as more times than not it was Americans Jamel Mcclean and Kyle Weems that led the team on offense including a 34 point effort by Weems in game four. In game five, Bonn fought for 40 minutes and kept the game close in the first half 43-42. However in the second half, Oldenburg continued to be very consistent on offense as the Americans Chris Kramer, Adam Chubb, Julius Jenkins and Ronald Burrell hit timely shots while Bonn was more inconsistent on offense and had some costly turnovers. Bonn did cut the lead to three points with a minute to play and had Mcclean had more fortune on two shots inside then who knows if Oldenburg would have pulled out the win. Oldenburg showed the whole series that they could rely on many players on offense as they had four different top scorers in the five game series including unsung hero Robin Smuelders twice.

One could say that ratiopharm ulm had a cake walk in their series against the Artland Dragons. The Artland Dragons underachieved this season and were a major disappointment being swept by rtaiopharm Ulm. Ratiopharm Ulm won their two games easily at home by 35 points, but were challenged in Quackenbruck, but escaped the dragon dungeon winning 90-85. In both victories at home, ratiopharm Ulm dominated the boards and shot very well and had an amazing only five turnovers in game one.  Ulm usually has a very healthy knack of spreading around the basketball love as they had six players in double figures so if a John Bryant and Allan Ray combined for 48 points of the team 83 in game one, then no one was mad, but simply a showcase like that is always possible with their offensive weapons. In the game that was tight at Artland, the home team was able to cut it to four points in crunch time, but Ulm always had an answer and Per Guenther exploded for 35 points as nobody could stop him not even Toby the Dragon who´s fire was useless. All in all ratiopharm Ulm was a class to high for the Artland Dragons and they also had three different top scorers in all three games. Even when it seems like big John Bryant didn´t play much of a role, he still ended the three game series with 14,7ppg and 10,0rpg as he played very solid with the combination of his supporting cast also producing. Ratiopharm Ulm also cleaned up on defense allowing 75 points in the series never letting Artland really explode except in game two.

Ratiopharm Ulm swept the season series and were able to win on the road while the EWE Baskets Oldenburg have the home court advantage. In the first meeting in Ulm this season, Oldenburg was blown away 96-66 as the game was pretty much decided at halftime already after a 31 point first quarter explosion by ratiopharm Ulm. John Bryant was unstoppable tallying 26 points and ratiopharm Ulm dominated the boards 44-27 and shot 45% from the field and from the parking lot. Oldenburg never found a rhythm on offense and drained much energy needing to come back in the hostile environment in the Ulm arena. Ratiopharm Ulm completely shut down the playmaking of Dru Joyce and Chris Kramer. In the return game in Oldenburg, ratiopharm Ulm snuck away with a 95-91 shoot out win. The game was very tight in the fourth quarter as Oldenburg led four times, but California native Jon Bryant slammed the door shot in the last minute with four clutch free throws. Ratipharm ulm had a very good shooting day while Oldenburg rebounded better and only had nine turnovers. Ulm go into this series well rested with no game in more than a week while Oldenburg don´t have much time to recuperate after their game five win against Bonn and will be in very good game shape. These are two offensive forces going head to head where the defense most likely will take a back seat to the offense. Oldenburg will need to keep John Byrant in check and Adam Chubb will have to be at his best and improve on the 45-14 head to head points that Bryant led over him. Even if you can get a Bryant somewhat into foul trouble, then there is the second beast waiting in the wings with Omar Samhan. Controlling the boards will be vital and just defending their perimeter shooters as guys like Allan Ray, Philipp Schwethelm and Steven Esterkamp are always dangerous and even a Keaton Nankivil  can hit big shots not too mention the much improved parking lot shooting of Per Guenther who shot 48% during the season. Oldenburg can´t lose game one at home or it could be a short series and find a rhythm early on offense. Ratiopharm Ulm enter the series as the favorite and have come into the playoffs reaching their peak having won 12 of their last 13 games. Their offense just continues to rock and seldom falters as they just score, score and score having connected for less than 80 points only three times in the last 13 games. If ratiopharm Ulm can control the boards, play their game, limit Joyce and Kramer then they will win this series. Mr Oldenburg Rickey Paulding is one of the hardest competitors in the league and he deserves a second title as much as John Bryant a first, but ratiopharm Ulm is simply the better team, have a deeper bench and have John Bryant. Ratiopharm ulm will win the series in four games and just be too much for the EWE Baskets Oldenburg.

 

 

 

 

Richie Williams is a 25 year old 178cm guard that played for SC Rasta Vechta this season and is sitting in the Pro A finals against the Duesseldorf Baskets. He is a very fast guard that can play either one or two. Great at pushing the break. Can score by shooting the three or using his explosiveness to beat his man. Gets to the basket and scores in traffic. A specialist in steals that uses his quickness to intimidate on defense. Great ball control. Gets the whole team involved when playing the point but can takeover a game at any time. He started his basketball career at  San Diego St. (NCAA) in 2005 where he played until 2009. In his senior year he played  36 games: 7.2ppg, 4.3rpg, 3.5apg, 2.1spg, FGP: 40.9%, 3Pts: 37.5%, FT: 64.2%. In 2009-2010, he started his professional basketball career for The San Diego Surf (ABA), in Jan.’10 moved to FSU Selfoss (Iceland-Express League, starting five): 8 games: 27.5ppg, 8.1rpg, 3.4apg, 2.8spg, FGP: 51.6%, 3PT: 46.2%, FT: 72.7%. Last season he played for  UBC Hannover Tigers (Germany-ProB, starting five): 33 games: 18.3ppg, 5.1rpg, Assists-4(5.7apg), Steals-2(3.2spg), FGP: 48.1%, 3PT: 36.1%, FT: 75.8%. He spoke to German Hoops after beating Duesseldorf and winning the Pro A title.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Congrats on winning the 2013 Pro A title. How proud are you of the team that they pulled it out despite not having you in the lineup?

 

 

 

Very proud and I expected it. They’ve done it before against Gottingen at home and in Karlsruhe in the second half of the season. It was never a one man show this season

 

How tough was it not playing. When did you find out that you wouldn´t play and why didn´t you play?

 

 

 

It’s the worst feeling ever. We put our blood, sweat and tears into what we do to play for moments like this and to not be apart it sucks.

 

Remembering winning this Pro A title will not be difficult, but what about the scores of the two final games were 84-78. Do you think anyone will ever remember these identical scores in 10 years or will that Pro A title always stick in the minds?

 

 

 

 No way, being crowned champion means a lot more than the exact score of the game.

 

 

 

Was the quick start where SC Rasta Vechta led 30-16 the stepping stone of getting the 84-78 win?

 

 

 

Definitely. Dusseldorf rallied back in the second half but in the whole they created was too much for them to rebound from.

 

What was key in getting the two wins in the Duesseldorf Baskets series?

 

 

 

 I would say “I believe you”. Being champions is a goal that every team strives to achieve. The actual belief, confidence, hard work and togetherness is what separates teams from others in making that dream happen.

 

How vital was the work of head coach Pat Elze? What was his strongest suit in leading the team to the Beko BBL?

 

 

 

 He’s a players coach. He never lost confidence in us even when we started the season 0-3. Trust and confidence in your players goes a long way when coaching a team and he exemplified that all season long

 

SC Rasta Vechta will play in the Beko BBL. Hpw good are the odds that you will be playing against the Artland Dragons this coming season with SC Rasta Vechta?

 

 

 

 I believe that we have a good chance. By no means am I saying we’re better than the Artland Dragons but we can definitely compete and give them a run for their money

 

How did your game develop in your second season as a professional? Do you think you can make the next step to the Beko BBL and be a force in the best basketball league in Germany?

 

 

 

 I pride myself in working the hardest and winning. I’ve never been the strongest, best shooter, highest jumper but I feel I have great leadership skills, a fighting spirit and I will my teams to win. The BBL is for sure a different level of competition but I know I will be ready to make noise in the league next year. Being ready is never an issue

 

Who was the unsung hero of SC Rasta Vechta this season?

 

 

 

The Unsung hero for me is Jacob Doerkson. Dude is a work horse and by far the craftiest player I’ve played. He posts hard, always aware of where he is on the court and he just makes things happen. The things he does you wont see on the stat sheet

 

What will be the first thing that you will do when you touchdown in the States?

 

 

 

I will land in San Diego and head straight to the Taco shop to get a Carne Asada Burrito!

 

Which two NBA teams will reach the final and will the Miami Heat win again?

 

I think the Spurs will meet Miami in the finals but Miami will win it again

 

 

 

After you watch any given sunday, were you positive that SC Rasta Vechta would win the Pro A title?

 

 

 

Any Given Sunday gets me super hyped! Al Pacino gives one of the greatest pre-game speeches ever. After that I truly believed great things would happen
