Myles Hesson is a 23 year old 195 cm forward from Birmingham, England that was one of the 12 best players in Great Britain and was selected for the 2013 national team playing in Slovenia at the Eurochampionships. He will play in the German Pro A this season for the Giessen 46ers. Last season he played for  Weissenhorn Youngstars (Germany-ProB, starting five): 20 games: 19.7ppg, 10.3rpg, 1.5apg, 1.7spg, 1.5bpg, 2FGP: 54.4%, 3FGP: 27.4%, FT: 65.6%, in Mar.’13 moved to Ratiopharm Ulm (Germany-BBL): 9 games: 4.2ppg, 2.8rpg. He started his professional career in 2009-2010 for  Birmingham Aces (EBL2) averaging 13.1ppg, 4.9rpg, 2FGP: 47.9%, 3PT: 33.3%. He spoke to German Hoops after Great Britain missed reaching the next round at the 2013 European championships.

A long summer of play with the British national team comes to an end. In the last game, Great Britain failed to advance by losing to the Ukraine 87-68. How deep does the pain sit? One single game that could of brought you to the next round?

I think the Belgium game was pivotal for us. Its tough to think that just a few plays here and there could have made the difference but its a learning experience for us all.

The Ukraine got a 10 point lead which grew to 18 points and they never looked back. What were the main reasons for not being able to come back?

They out played us in the paint and we never really got comfortable on offense

The daily grind was tough as one had almost a game each day. Great Britain played more with a seven man rotation. Was the club  a bit tired in the last game?

You could say we were tired but every team here has had the same amount of games so its not an excuse I would use.

It seemed like the Ukraine saved their best for last to advance. They didn´t have one or two players that carried the load, but had a total team effort leading to the win. Did the Ukraine possibly surprise Great Britain a bit with their game plan not focusing too much on a Pooh Jeter or Sergii Gladyr?

Yeah their other role players really stepped up for them when they needed it. Jeter only had 6 points going into the final few minutes. We did a good job defensivley on him but their whole team contributed to their win.

Great Britain finished with a record of 2-3. What is your summary of the 2013 Eurochampionships for the country of Great Britain. Was it able to make steps and development with the roster it had?

We had a young team not filled with any “superstars” and I think we came together as a team and did our country proud.

With one or the other NBA player on board, it probably would of extended your summer vacation and you wouldn´t have been on the 12 man roster. How thankful are you for having had this experience at Euro 2013?

Its hard to say what could have happend had our “nba guys” been here but Im grateful with the opportunity I was given and worked hard to be in the position I found myself in.

In 5 games you averaged 11,0ppg and 6,0rpg. How happy were you with your own performance in your first big international tournament?

Im very happy with my individual performance, I remained consistent in all but one game so I cant really complain.

You played almost each day against a basketball nation and also off the court you were able to experience many amazing things. What one thing from this Eurobasket 2103 tournament will you always keep most tight in your memory?

Ill always remember both our wins against Germany and Israel, we managed to come together as a team and win when everyone else had wrote us off.

Which 4 teams do you see reaching the semi finals and which country do you see winning? It has been kind the tournament of upsets and many countries like Finland really surprising everyone?

Im not sure about who will go through but id like to see Slovenia in the finals, theyve been playing great basketball and had some of the moat entertaining games in the tournament so far.

Which player in the tournament was the biggest thrill to play against and at the same time was your most difficult opponent to guard?

Nicolas Batum was one of the toughest opponents I had to guard personally.

What is your opinion of how Germany faired? They were the second youngest team, beat France but still didn´t advance. Your ex teammate Per Guenther lauded you an interview for being able to come to a tournament like this after playing Pro B last season. Was the experience missing a bit for Germany to achieve bigger feats at Eurobasket 2013?

I think they had a good team, not quite sure why they never won more games but anything can happen in a tournament like this.

Will it be difficult to come down from the Eurobasket 2013 experience and head to Giessen to play Pro A basketball? Many eyes will be on you and what you did the last months.

It wont be difficult for me personally, I want to play at the highest level I can so the more eyes on me the better.

Guy thanks for talking to German Hoops again. Germany beat Israel 80-76. How are your feelings after this game. In a way you couldn´t lose as a fan since you have the citizenship of both countries.

I’m disappointed because Israel still had the chance to advance and Germany did not, but that is a part of basketball.

You had said in the last interview that the country of Israel is very disappointed of how Israel has played in the tournament. Israel had to win the last game against Germany to move on to the next round. Is this a basketball tradegy for the country of Israel?

They way I read and saw that Israel took it really hard and they will make a lot of thinking for the future.

You have followed the German players the last years. What German player impressed you the most that you might not have expected to play a role?

I really liked Schaffartzik and Benzing, in the last tournament I also got to know Giffey, I am really impressed from the way he played, he played smart and confident and I think he will be one of the best Germans in the next years.

Israel won one game and lost four. What is your personal summary of the 2013 European championships. What was missing for Israel getting more wins and being able to advance to the next round?

I think Israel have good players and a good coach, something for sure didnt work out for them, I can’t say exactly what, but maybe there is something we dont know or just a bad momentum the last weeks.

What young German player impressed you the most during the 2013 european championships? A guy like Nils Giffey has a huge future with the team?

As I said I think Giffey will be that man.

The youngest player on the team of Israel was NBA player Omri Casspi from the year 1988. Where is the youth of Israel? What young Israel players could we see in the next years?

I hope you will see me next time we also have more young good players, but the coach decided to go with the experience.

Where do you see the future of Germany at tournaments? Guys like Dennis Schroeder, Elias Harris and Tim Ohlbrecht as well as veterans Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Kaman didn´t play because of NBA. Could Germany play a role at the 2016 Olympics in Brasil? Dirk Nowizki has shown interest of playing if he is fit?

I think if they all will come and Dirk will still be fit, then Germany always have chance with him.

Countries like Russia, Turkey and Germany will try for the wild card for the 2014 World Championships, but only two countries get it. Do you think that Germany will get one considering the good name that German basketball has in the FIBA?

I do think they have a chance with an attractive young team with some NBA names, but it will be hard against teams like Russia and Turkey with a long time traditional of basketball.

If Omri Casspi and Hekio Schaffartzik had a shooting contest with each guy getting 25 open three pointers from the corner and 25 contested shots who would win that shooting battle?

A good matchup but I think Schaffartzik will win.

What DVD are you looking forward to watching in the next days?

I will watch the movie about Jonny Cash.

Guy thanks for talking to German Hoops. How was your summer. What was the coolist thing that you did on the court and for fun?

My summer was really good. I had a lot of time to work on my game with my privat coach, Yoed Agmon, and I played in the Maccabiah games with Macabi Germany in Israel. I also had a good time to be next to my family and get new power for another season overseas.

You are starting  a new adventure with BV Chemnitz in the Pro A. What has been your early impression of your new team?

I really like it here, the team looks good, and the people here are very friendly and supportive.

The team has some Americans as well as a handful of Germans. At the guard position there is Eric Palm and yourself. What has been your impression of him?

I think Eric is a great player. He is really explosive, a great shooter, plays good defense and can help the team in every guard position.

Donald Lawson will be playing his fourth season with BV Chemnitz and last season had 11 and 10 stats. Is he already the leader of the team in the early stages of the season?  What do you like most about his play?

Donald is a big leader, he always talks to the new guys and the young guys to help everybody to get into the new system, it’s a big advantage for us to have a guy who has already been here for 4 years and who knows exactly how things work here. I think beside his great defense and rebounds he is also a big guy that likes to pass the ball and can do it well.

What kind of a role has head coach Felix Schreier envisioned for you? Will it be any different from what you did on the court in Paderborn?

I think my role in the team will be quite the same as I had in Paderborn, but with Chemnitz we look to be a better team and look higher on the standings.

Chemnitz is a lot bigger than Paderborn and Lich. What do you like most about the city and how basketball enthusiastic are the people there?

Chemnitz it’s a bigger city but it’s still a calm city. I have to say that there is a lot of interest about the team, and we have the feeling that the fans are waiting for the first home game, and the first opportunity to see us playing. It gives us of course a good feeling about the city.

You have been watching the 2013 Eurochampionships from Slovenia. Are you very surprised that Israel and Germany only have a record of 2-6 in the tournament?

Yes i´m watching the games every day, I think Germany has a really young team, and we could see their potential in the game against France, and I’m sure we aregoing to see Germany having more success in the future. About the Israeli team I have to say that people in Israel are very disappointed from the result until now. I also think they had to do better than that, but as long as they have a small chance to make it to the next level I will stay optimistic.

If somebody had told you before the tournament that Germany would beat France and then lose the next three games what would you have thought?

it was of course a big surprise. But that´s what I like about basketball. There is always a chance for everyone to win and surprises happen every big tournament.

Israel lost in OT to Great Britain and lost 74-67 to the Ukraine. Do you think that there could have been more success for Israel in this group? These were games that they could of won?

About the Israeli team I have to say that people in Israel are very disappointed from the result until now. I also think they had to do better than that, but as long as they have a small chance to make it to the next level I will stay optimistic.

Omri Casspi has not had a super tournament. Has he been tired from the long NBA season and would Israel have advanced with a Casspi in top form?

I dont think he is tired, but I think he put to much pressure on his shoulders as the leader of this team. I think he should’nt take so much pressure on him and understand that there is a lot of good guys with a lot of experience on the team that can help him to lead the team.

What Israel national player was the biggest surprise for you so far and who will emerge as the next big star from this roster?

I think Afick Nisim is doing the best in the tournament untill now. I thought from the very first game he should get more responsibility. Yesterday he really got the responsibility and won the game for Israel.

Lior Eliyahu has had a solid tournament. He was drafted by the Orlando Magic in 2006 and has  had a solid basketball career in Europe with Macabbi Tel Aviv and in the ACB. Why do you think that he never reached the NBA?

I think he should have gone to the NBA, he got a lot of talent and could reach that level. I think If he would have worked more on his defense, midrange shot and get a little bigger and stronger, he could play NBA today.

Today Germany clash with Israel in a meaningless game. What can we expect in this game besides both teams playing for pride? Will the top players be rested and let the young guys get minutes or will both head coaches want not to finish last in the group and play for the win?

The game has a meaning, because if Israel wins and the other 2 teams loose, then Israel can go up from the third place in the group. Im not sure about Germany. But I know Israel will do everything to win the game, and I’m sure Germany as well.

Who will you be rooting for today Israel or Germany?

Today I am for Israel.

Which teams will reach the final 4 at Eurobasket 2013?

I think France and Spain will be there. On the other 2 spots it is hard to tell.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

The last DVD I watched was Wolverine 2013.

Myles thanks for talking to German Hoops after the 81-74 win. Is this the biggest win for Great Britain in the 2013 Eurochampionships considering the importance of the game?

Every game has been important but yes this was a do or die game for us.

Germany had a very strong first quarter leading 23-16 after one quarter. What was giving Great Britain the biggest problems? It seemed like your team had no solution how to stop the ruthlessness of Alex King on the boards that led to quick points?

Yeah we started off a little sluggish and had a few defensive break downs which let Germany get a few second chance points and easy open shots.

In the second quarter, Great Britain got back into the game going on a 11-0 run to take the lead. What was Great Britain able to do better that finally got the team into a positive rhythm?

We rebounded the ball better and executed our plays.

The Third quarter was very tight, but Great Britain held onto the lead. Was it the German foul trouble and just more cleverness of Great Britain that helped you keep the lead?

Yeah we really attacked them in the paint and got them into foul trouble early which made them have a bit more to think about on defense.

With four minutes to play Tibor Pleiss brought Germany back to four points, but Great Britain was able to close the door on Germany. What was key in the last minutes in crunch time to getting the big win?

Just staying calm and composed, we hit three big three pointers which more or less put the nail in the coffin.

How does it feel to being the best man on the floor with 21 points and 11 boards and a rank of 22. Was this one of your best games in your career? The combination of the win and your play?

Im just thankful that I could contribute as much as I did in one of the best team victories I have been apart of, it was a great team effort.

How has your game improved from your last game in the Beko BBL with ratiopharm Ulm until now? It seems like you have grown in your basketball game?

I play with more confidence and energy after having good summer workouts at home in Birmingham.

How important was it to winning this do or die game in that you kept Heiko Schaffartzik in check with 9 points and one assist. A 22 point 11 assist game might have been enough for team Germany win.

It was our game plan to keep Schaffartzik and Benzing out of the game as much as we can and we did a good job of that.

What is more difficult to defend the quick first step of Robin Benzing or limiting his shot?

Both are pretty tough as he is a good player.

Did you have any soothing words for your ex teammate Per Guenther? Were you able to comfort him a little in the post game hand shakes?

He was obviously upset with the loss but was also happy to see me doing well.

If someone had told you before the 2013 Eurochampionships that Germany would beat France and then lose the next three games what would you have thought?

Its hard believe but it has been a crazy tournament so far.

You guys have one game left against the Ukraine and still have chances of advancing to the next round? What can we expect from this game and what will be key to getting the win?

Like every game we go into, we will have a game plan we have to stick to and if we give it 100% there is no reason why we cant come away with the victory

You are averaging 13,6ppg and 7,0rpg. You may have gotten some top offers from teams in Europe, but you have  a contract with German Pro A team Giessen. Despite your play last season for ratiopharm Ulm in the Beko BBL, do you still see Giessen and Pro A the best step in your basketball development?

I havent spoken to my agent about any offers I may or may not have so im still looking forward to playing for Giessen next season.

What movie will you watch tonight in letting the big win day over Germany wind down?

No movie, just video on Ukraine and an early night for me.

I remember less than a year ago watching you net 25 points in Frankfurt in a Pro B game and opening some eyes in the German basketball scene, then moving to the Beko BBL and ratiopharm Ulm and now your one of the 12 best UK players playing at Eurobasket 2013 in Slovenia. Has the last year been like a dream for you?

Yeah the last year has worked out pretty well for me, I just hope to continue getting better and moving my way up the ladder so to speak.

Do family sometimes have to pinch you to bring you to reality and say, hey Myles this is all true?

Haha, yeah my family keep me grounded and remind me every day to keep working hard, be grateful, and make the most out of the opportunities ive been given.

If someone had told you a year ago, Myles you will be starting the game against Belgium at the Eurobasket 2012, what would you have told them?

I would have told them bring it on, I love facing new challenges. I work hard every day and appreciate the situation I am in right now.

Great Britain lost badly to France, but what kind of  a learning experience was this. What was the most valuable thing that you could learn from all the NBA air that was on the court that day?

It was a tough loss. The most valuable thing I took from that game was how efficient they all are, they made very few mistakes and capitalized on all of ours.

In the game against Belgium you were in the starting lineup with Kyle Johnson. How important has he been during the last weeks in practice in helping your game and pushing you?

Ive known Kyle for a couple years now and we both push each other to be better every practice and in games also.

The next game is a do or die game against Germany. Both teams are 1-2 and want to advance to the next round. What type of game can we await and it seems like Germany is the slight favorite?

You can expect a really physical high tempo game, we are prepared for what Germany have to offer. We are no strangers to being the underdogs and have complete confidence in our abilities as a team to get the win.

You have played against many of the German national players, but against what player are you looking forward to scrapping mostly on the court?

Probably has to be Robin Benzing as he is having a great tournament so far. I always like a good challenge on defense.

German Heiko Schaffartzik is one of the top players at Eurobasket 2013 so far averaging 16 points and 10 assists. Have you ever witnessed a player in your career that has had the knack such incredible long range shots? What do you like most about his game?

Yeah he has been impressive so far this tournament. I like the fact that he not only scores but can pass too.

You recently had Thorsten Leibenath as coach and soon will have ex German national player Denis Wucherer as coach in Giessen. Your coach now is Joe Prunty. What has he given you in last weeks that has helped your game develop?

He gave me a role before the final team was picked and ive set my mind in every practice and every game to fulfill that the best I can. He has confidence in what I can do which always helps.

You have been able to watch other games and teams. What player has amazed you so far and could be the discovery of the tournament?

Its no surprise but Tony Parker really stood out to me when we played France, his understanding of the game is incredible.

My summer was nice. I worked out a lot and played in a tourney with some of my college teammates. The best summer experience for me was getting to see my son go to school on the first day.

After two years in Austria, now you start a new chapter in your basketball life in Holland with GasTerra Flames Groningen. Does it seem like an eternity since you played in the Beko BBL? Does basketball time fly for you at age 29?

Its kind of a two way street. Sometimes when I think back it seems so long ago. Now I am the one giving pointers instead of just taking them. Times has flew by!!!

What were the main reasons for going to GasTerra Flames Groningen?

I heard all great things about the organization. They want to win the championship which is always a goal for me. The team is competing in Eurochallenge which will be my first time in a Euro tourney.

The club has a successful history. With the core of guys coming in, what are the goals of the team this season?

The main goal is winning championships in the Dutch League. The second is to make the top 2 of our group in Eurochallenge.

The team has four Americans including an ex Beko BBL player with Jason Dourisseau. What has he told you from his time in Ludwigsburg?

He has talked a little about the organization and the teams he played on while he was there. We haven’t talked a whole lot yet about his time there.

With Cashmere Wright you have a talented rookie that played at Cincinnati(NCAA). What has been your impression of him and who does he remind you of on the floor?

Cash will be a great player in Europe once he learns everything. He is very quick and shifty. His game is lot like Raymond Felton’s. He can shoot it and he has a good floater.

After playing in Hagen and Austria, how do you like living by the sea in Groningen? What do you like most about the city?

Groningen is nice. It is the most lively place I’ve played at. It is 2 colleges and everyone speaks English which makes the transition very easy.

You watched the first game of the 2013 Eurochampionships Germany against France. Did you give Germany any chance before the start to win this game?

I thought that they it would be a very tough game for the Germans with them being young.

Where would you rate this win for Germany against France. Two years ago Germany lost by 10 points to France with Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Kaman?

I think it is big for their confidence. France is supposedly the top team in their group. To take out the toughest team first is big.

How surprised were you that Germany were able to control the game for the most part. What were the main reasons that a bunch of young guys were able to keep NBA stars in check?

I was surprised a little. The Germans were aggressive and attacked the whole game. I think the French overlooked them due to their experience.

It has been no secret that Lucca Staiger can shoot the basketball, but did his crazy shot at the end look like a second Heiko Schaffartzik? Lol

He is known as a shooter so he is always capable of taking and making those shots.

France is very confident and have challenged Spain by saying that they want to win the gold. Will this set back hurt France or could it be a good eye opener for them?

I think it should wake them up. They should know that teams are not going lay down because you have a few NBA guys.

Which young German player impressed you the most? Perhaps UCONN forward Nils Giffey who as a freshman won a national title with Kemba Walker?

Giffey played a good game but I think Benzing played great. He knocked big shots and drew a couple offensive fouls. He looked confident out there.

You played against guys like Tibor Pleiss, Maik Zirbes, Heiko Schaffartzik, Robin Benzing, Per Guenther and many more when you were with Phoenix Hagen. What current German player always gave you the most problems on the floor?

I would have to say Robin. He was match-up problem because of his size and playing on the wing. He could shoot it or post you.

Will you try to keep following the German team on TV when you have time and what do you see them accomplishing in this tournament?

Of course when I have time I will watch the games. With the win over France they should make it to the knockout round.

How much confidence will this win give Germany? Could this propel a young team like Germany to new heights?

It should let them know that they can be the top team in their group if they come to play every game. It could help or hurt them depending on how they use it. They are a team on the rise.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

I watched Temptation a Tyler Perry Movie.

In the last years having the autobahn series between the Frankfurt Skyliners and Giessen 46ers where fans could already have been home including having had a Mcdonalds stop before the team bus of either club had rolled out of the parking lot and test games before the season had been as typical as Candian pop singer Justin Bieber landing in the tabloids almost daily and taking over for Lindsay Lohan who has quitted down a bit lately with front page news, Boston winter teams Celtics and Bruins playing pre season games in neighboring cities like Providence and Worcester or big time defense lawyer Robert Shapiro coming to the aid of sports stars when in the time of need like for OJ Simpson almost 20 years ago and now for busted NBA player Lamar Oden who was slapped with a DUI charge. The only difference this season in the head to head matchups between Frankfurt and Giessen will be that their only meeting will be preseason as they wont meet in the regular season, because Giessen has moved down to the second Bundesliga for the first time ever after winning a series of BBL titles in the 70s. In the past, these games before or during the season were always entertaining and Frankfurt fans could have seen a mix of outstanding players like Euroleague player Chuck Eidson, NBA draft pick Maurice Jeffers, Euroleague player Ricky Hickman, or NCAA champion Souleymane Wane battling in the famous Hessen derbies. Now with a step down, the Giessen 46ers might not have the strength of former players, but still have a mix of interesting players that have potential like Steven Bennett that got to practice daily with NBA player Dennis Schroeder last season, TJ Dileo who is a rookie that played at Temple and probably knows some Allen Iverson secrets that none knows since his dad is the general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers, or recently signed Rob Chubb who will be trying to enforce the good last name of relative Adam Chubb who also played in Giessen early in his career. The love and hate relationship between the fans will probably never change for each other, but all in all Giessen is a traditional Basketball city and belong in the Beko BBL and now will have to show how quickly they can return back. For some Skyliners playing against Giessen is always something special. Just like the last years, Frankfurt had little trouble beating Giessen as they steamrolled the Pro A team 75-42. “This is a great rivalry in basketball and both teams have a great fan base. They may not be in the first league now, but I hope they are back in the Beko BBL soon, because it is always nice to see a familiar team in the league”, added Fraport Skyliner forward Jacob Burtschi. After beating USC Heidelberg 72 hours ago, the Fraport Skyliners returned back to work and had little problems walloping the Giessen 46ers 75-42. The Fraport Skyliners started very strong in the first half holding the Hessen club to 17 points and it could even have been less had the opponent not gone on a 5-0 run at the end of the first half. Jacob Burtschi who had fled Frankfurt to take part at a friends wedding in Florida was back on the court again after arriving in Frankfurt 24 hours earlier and surprisingly was pretty fit, but not happy how the team finished the game. “I was ok in the States and was used to the time difference, but jet lag hit me bad yesterday as I arrived. We played well in the first half being very aggressive, but let up a bit in the second half and just cruised. That is what happens in basketball at times either playing a good first half and bad second half or vice versa”, stressed Oklahoma native Jacob Burtschi. 24 hours earlier, Giessen was able to win a defensive battle in Giessen against Gotha with six players, but had less luck in Frankfurt with nine players. Giessen was behind quickly and were never able to get into the game as the Fraport Skyliners dominated the game. “We have had personel problems. Dustin Mitchell was cut recently, Myles Hesson is with the English national team and Rob Chubb arrived yesterday. I think this loss showed us where we exactly are in our development. Our spacing was off and pick and role defesne was terrible. The rookies from the States still have to get used to this. We still need time to find our rhythm”, stressed ex TBB Trier guard Joshiko Saibu. The Fraport Skyliners started the game with Johannes Voigtmann, Danilo Barthel, Stefan Ilzhoefer, Quantez Robertson and Beko BBL rookie Frankie Sullivan. The Fraport Skyliners found their rhythm quickly racing out on to a 6-0 lead. Illzhoefer started the game with a lay in getting a perfect back door feed from Danilo Barthel, Super Tez then dunked getting a crisp back door pass from Johanes Voigtmann and then it was time for Danilo white men can jump Barthel show his dunking excellence getting the feed from Auburn graduate Frankie Sullivan. Last season in the pre season it was the Konstan Klein to Johannes Voigtmann give and go that released the ohhhs and ahhhhs in the BCM training facility and tonight it was the remarkable passing ability that Voigtmann and Barthel have had continue to develop. It might be difficult to argue that they are the best four-five man passing German combo in the Beko BBL. “They both have great touch on their passes and just see the floor so well. To have this great ability so young is remarkable and it will only get better. They are a great combo”, stressed Jacob Burtschi. Dawan Robinson misses being on the court, but he loves having that Spkie Lee front row seat on the bench to watch the German wunderkinder big men show their poise passing. “I love how Joe Voigtmann passes the ball. He makes passes that even point guards would have problems making. It really is untypical how well they both can pass the ball”, commented Philadelphia native Dawan Robinson. Giessen head coach Denis Wucherer then made a change inserting Steven Bennett who wasn´t fit and he quickly changed the game as he led Giessen on a 6-0 run to dead lock the game at 6-6. Giessen got all three buckets inside as Benjamin Lischka scored over Voigtmann and Atlanta native Rickey Young scored twice inside including a thunderous dunk. Frankfurt was taken a bit out of their offense, but soon regained their touch as they finished the first quarter with a 13-4 run to lead 19-10 after ten minutes. Frankfurt played enthusiastic inside out basketball as Voigtman made a tip in and captain Marius Nolte scored over Chubb and then got consecutive three point bombs from Jacob Burtschi and Quantez Robertson. Bennett and Max Merz traded baskets in the last seconds. Merz didn´t have much time on the clock, but used the time like a veteran and scored high off the glass. The Fraport Skyliners really took control of the game in the second quarter going on a 6-0 run to start the game as Merz scored inside, then Nolte scored on the pick and roll getting a nice pass from Jan Novak and Burtschi then scored on a fancy reverse lay up waiting for Young to commit before making the shot. Young then scored as Giessen trailed 26-12. Then came a big drought period for Giessen as the Fraport Skyliners went on a 13-0 run to extend their lead to 39-12 as they continued to play aggressive defense not giving Giessen any easy shots and even when they had wide open shots, they were unable to connect. Frankfurt Skyliners head coach Gordon Herbert continued to sub his players at ease not fretting to play all his German players and the team showed good control of their offense so early in the preseason. Frankfurt could do what they wanted as the Giessen big men Chubb and Young really showed little resistance in keeping Frankfurt far from the hole. Burstchi started the run with a left handed lay in past Young where he looked like a lost country boy searching for the unharvest corn field, then it was Voigtman and Barthel hooking up again for an easy lay up and then it was Sullivan scoring hard to the hoop as Young was still far off looking for that lost corn field. Then there was an interesting observation to be made after a loose ball that Sullivan was fighting for, Dawan Robinson came on the court and gave pointers to the rookie. “I am like an assistant coach. I try to help Sullivan as much as I can. One has to remember that this is just his second professional game. I know how tough it is for him, but when you are a good player and work hard which he does, you have a shorter time to adjust”, warned Dawan Robinson. Frankfurt continued to pour on the offense as Barthel drilled a jumper over Chubb and Ilzhoefer nailed a three pointer from the corner after Quantez Robertson did like a point guard and whisteled over a bullet for the assist. Giessen was able to get away from their horrible two point showing and score five points in the last two minutes to make the halftime score of 43-17 just a tad bit better looking. TJ Di Leo finally hit a jumper and Bennett hit a step back jumper. “Frankfurt played very good defense. They did excellent work switching and I enjoyed their ball movement”, stressed Lebron James buddy Ronald Howard. The Fraport Skyliners were shooting an incredible 71% from the field and 43% from outside while Giessen was shooting 35% from the field and 14% from outside. Frankfurt had the rebound edge 16-7 and nine turnovers. The first few minutes of the third quarter were very hectic as both teams were filling up their turnover account and missing shots left and right, that the basketball play on the court looked as nasty as a rush hour pile up on highway 10 in Los Angeles. The Fraport Skyliners got on the board first as it was the German 4-5 connection once again as Voigtmann scored getting the pass from Barthel. Saibou then scored who got stronger as time marched on. “I see myself as a leader and want this responsibility, so I need to show it. I took more control which the other players took into their game”, added Joshiko Saibu who was sporting a blond hairdo that reminded one of the Dennis Rodman faze back in the late 90s. Then it was Barthel that scored inside retrieving the pass from buddy Voigtmann. Giessen connected on a few more offensive plays as Bennett scored in massive Skyliner traffic, Saibu hit a floater and Benjamin Lischka nailed a three pointer, but Giessen still trailed 50-26. In the last minutes, Frankfurt closed out the third quarter with a 7-2 run as the Fraport Skyliners led comfortably 47-28. Merz who likes to penetrate and has a knack for making one or the another difficult shots hit a off balance shovel lay in. Ilzhoefer then hit an open three pointer and Robertson nailed an off balance jumper. Six months ago 18 year old 200cm guard/forward Stefan Ilzhoefer was playing in the NBBL playoffs and tonight he led all scorers with 13 points and contributed three steals on 56% shooting from the field. This German player could be the biggest steal that the Fraport Skyliners have done in years. It will be interesting how he will develop and just how much Beko BBL minutes he will get, but one thing is for sure, the two Skyliner elder statesmen Dawan Robinson and Jacob Burstchi have much respect for the player. “He can shoot the hell out of the ballHe isn´t fast, but he makes the right decisions and he finishes well. The thing that I really like about him is that he listens. I told him help attack the baseline more on screens and he did it”, stressed Dawan Robinson. “Ilzhoefer was a great steal from the Skyliners. He can still put on muscle, but he will become a very good player”, added Jacob Burtschi. In the fourth quarter, the Fraport Skyliners continued to control the game as Giessen continued to struggle finding any kind of consistency in their game. Ilzhoefer started the scoring for the Fraport Skyliners with another lay in and then it was Quantez Robertson with a heads up play catching a Jan Novak airball and making the put back. Di Leo and Barthel then traded baskets as both made step back jumpers as Frankfurt led 63-32. Then there was a faze where one could see a minimal, but careful Ilzhoefer to Super Tez comparison as the German scored inside and then made a few back to back steals showing that bit of being all over the court something that Frankfurt fans have been used to the American from Auburn doing since his arrival in Frankfurt in 2009. Young then dropped a jumper who played a solid offensive game, but was hidden on defense. Sullivan then made a floater as time was winding down. The last defensive and offensive play by the Fraport Skyliners was spectacular. It started on the defensive end where Danilo Barthel who is as much a delight to watch dunk as it is swatting away a ball which he did blocking the young Giessen player Pfannmuller which led to a last offensive play as Frankie Sullivan found Voigtmann on the ally-op which the big man had problems reaching, but was able to lay in ending the game as Frankfurt won easily 75-42. Dawan Robinson might not have played, but was still sporting that huge smile and was satisfied about the play of his team. “This was a good win and big step forward to the first game. Our defesne was excellent. Our offense was a lot better and it has been progressing with each practice. I think that we will be ok and will compete in the Beko BBL. A big compliment goes to coach Herbert that just wants everything to be perfect. He just wants everybody to know what to do and he wont stop until it is correct. This attitude helps in fine tuning the team”, stated Dawan Robinson. The Fraport Skyliners were led by Stefan Ilzhoefer with 13 points. Quantze Robertson sparked the team with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists. Frankie Sullivan, Jacob Burtschi and Danilo Barthel chipped in with 10 points a piece. The Giessen 46ers only had Rickey Young in double figures who accounted for 12 points. Frankfurt shot 57% from the field and 33% from the parking lot and Giessen shot 35% from the field and 17% from the three point line. Frankfurt dominated the boards 36-21. For Skyliner Jacob Burtschi, playing with such young players is a new experience, but he has no problem being one of the elder statesmen on the team. Working with young players will not only make him better, but also keep him in shape. “It is tough on the body, but you want to go hard in practice, because you want them to get better. These are a good group of kids. Frankfurt didn´t get any young kids form the playground, but really got good players”, warned Jacob Burtschi. The Fraport Skyliners next travel to Strassburg, France for back to back games on Friday and Saturday. Despite having only played two test games, the team still has enough to improve on. “We have to work on everything and improve on everything. We need to talk more on defense and execute our offense even better”, stated Jacob Burtschi. “

Steven Bennett is a 25 year old 173cm point guard from Los Angeles that is playing his second professional basketball season with the Giessen 46ers. Last season he played for  the Spot Up Medium Baskets Braunschweig. With Braunschweig he played 10 games averaging 22.7ppg, 4.1rpg, 5.1apg, 2.4spg, 2FGP: 57.5%, 3FGP: 34.2%, FT: 76.6% He is one of the few special players that has a tenacity and will to win that is unmatched; it is impossible to judge him based upon height alone because he can compete with anyone in the world. He has proven this in the Maui Invitational division I tournament in 2010, and was recognized as one of the top players (All-Maui Award) from a field of other top US point guards such as Kemba Walker, Kailin Lucas and Brandon Knight. Bennett is known for his great court vision and passing ability, and is able to get in the lane at will and finish against anyone with either left or right hand. Every team bases their defensive strategy around Bennett and is forced to take create his own shot and take his three point shots off the dribble. He is an excellent shooter, but wants to continue to improve his already respectable 40% three point percentage. Steven is known for having excellent leadership skills, and is highly respected by all of his peers and coaches. He played at Citrus JC (JUCO) from 2007-2009 and then played at  Chaminade (NCAA2). Last summer he also found experience playing for the  Rockingham Flames (Australia-SBL) He played three games with 2013 NBA draft pick Dennis Schroeder last season in the Pro B. He spoke to German Hoops after the 75-42 loss against the Fraport Skyliners in a test game.

Steven thanks again for talking to German Hoops. A tough 75-42 loss to the Fraport Skyliners. The other day you did beat Gotha with only six players. How tough has the early stages of pre season been with the limited players?

It has been very tough because we have been missing many players. I rode my ankle in practice and sat out the game against Gotha. Coach Wucherer gave me the green light today. When your competing your adrenaline is going and you forget the pain, but now after the game my ankle is killing me.

The Fraport Skyliners dominated the game from the get go. Why were the Giessen 46ers unable to get into a rhythm?

We never got our offense going and didn´t communicate well either. Our biggest problem is adjusting when the tough gets going, but we have enough time to work on this in preseason.

The Fraport Skyliners allowed only 42 points. It seemed at times that they knew exactly where the ball was going.

Frankfurt read our plays very well. We only had a few plays not having our full offense and they caught on quickly. They switched very well which gave us big problems. Our execution and how we chose our options led them to a big lead early.

In the third quarter, German Joshiko Saibu took control of the Giessen game. How important was his play?

His play carried us at the start. He had foul problems in the first half. Coach wanted us to show more effort and Saibu was more aggressive on the court.

After Frankfurt opened up the first quarter with a 6-0 run, Wucherer inserted you and you prompt changed the game getting Giessen on a 6-0 run. Are you used to being that spark plug?

Yes and the intensity wasn´t there at the start. When I came in the plays ran better. But usually I start the game so this was a bit unusual coming in then.

Giessen seem to be small this season. Could this give the team problems during the season?

Well coach Wucherer built the team this way, because he wants to play a certain style and that is to push the ball forward. We have athletic four players with Lischka and Young. Coach wants us to be more mobile. I think that we will be fine. As soon as we have all the players here, we will be able to practice more 5-5 which we haven´t been able to do now.

This is your first season in Giessen. What kind of experience has it been so far?

Giessen has been great. Even though we lost badly to Frankfurt, they still gave us applause after the loss. I hope that we can give them great games during the season.

How has been your transition to the Pro A? Is the differences big to the Pro B?

There are more skilled players here and the players know the game better.

Is it harder to get in the lane in the Pro A?

I think that my quickness can get me into the lane in any league. I just have to adjust to make better decisions in the Pro A. In the Pro B, you could get away with much more, but in the Pro A it is about making the right pass and shot on each play.

What is your goal with the Giessen 46ers?

My goal is to help Giessen as much as I can. I think that if I take care of my body that I will have a good season. I want to help Giessen regain that basketball confidence it once had with my game and leadership.

Braunschweig was a bigger city than Giessen. What is the biggest difference.

Well Giessen is smaller and here the distances are shorter. I have all the stores, gym and apartment on the same street.

TJ Di Leo played at temple and will help you with the guard duties. What has been your impression of him so far?

He is out of Temple and a tough player. I think his experience at Temple will help him and us this season. He has a good guard body and shot.

What was your impression of the youth movement of the Fraport Skyliners?

I am very impressed by the whole team, not only the German players. The German players did a great job adjusting to what we tried to take away from them during the game.

You played with NBA player Dennis Schroeder last season. Are yous till content that he will survive in the NBA?

He will do fine adjusting to the NBA. There is more space in the NBA which will help him make better decisions. He is a great pick and roll player and with Jeff Teague there, he will have time to grow.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

Pineapple Express.
