Jared Jordan is a 27 year old 188 cm pure point guard who understands how to run a team and has great court vision and leadership and hails from Hartford Connecticut. He played at Kingswood-Oxford prep school before going to Marist from 2003-2007. He really made a name for himself as he gave the word assist a new meaning as he was leading the nation in assists in his junior and senior years. In his last year, he played 33 games and averaged 17.2ppg, 5.9rpg and led the NCAA in assists with 8.7apg, 1.4spg, FGP: 42.5%, 3PT: 29.8%, FT: 69.0%. He finished as Marist’s all-time leader in assists with 813 and ranks sixth all-time in points with 1,538. It was no surprise that he was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in the second round at #45. He was traded to the New York Knicks, but didn´t make the roster so he ventured to Europe and played at Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius and played in the Lithuanian league averaging 5.9ppg, 1.8rpg, 4.3apg, 1.1spg, FGP: 51.2%, FT: 75.0%, 3PT: 45.0%; and in 18 games in the Baltic League averaging 6.0ppg, 1.8rpg, Assists-4(4.4apg), 1.9spg, 2FGP: 47.5%, 3PT: 41.7%, FT: 53.8% in 10 games. In the 2008-2009 season, he tried his luck again in the NBA landing with the New Orleans Hornets, but not making the team and playing in the D-league for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers playing 36 games and averaging 10.9ppg, 3.8rpg, Assists-2(9.0apg), 2.0spg, FGP: 45.9%, 3PT: 28.0%, FT: 70.3%. He spoke to German Hoops before the playoff series against the Brose Baskets Bamberg,
A do or die 81-62 win against the Fraport Skyliners last weekend. Where would you rank this game in your all time do or die games?
This was one of the biggest wins in my career. All was on the line playing against a direct competitor. It was a good win for the club and me.
The first quarter was pretty much even, but the turning point came in the second quarter. What was key for this?
We picked up our defense. We allowed the Skyliners to nine points in the second quarter and 10 points in the third quarter. We understoon that we needed to defend better and up our intensity level.
Skyliner head coach Muli Katzurin stated after the game that his team didn´t have the same level as the wins against FC Munich, Bamberg and Ulm. Were the Skyliners a bit mentally tired?
I don´t know if they were, but once they got down it was hard coming back in our arena. Our fans helped us a lot. Frankfurt has been fighting back all season long and that is what happens in games, but you have to give them a lot of credit for some big wins this season.
It was no secret that Bonn would push the ball inside. Were you surprised by how easy you scored inside?
56 points is a lot of points inside, but our mindset from the start was to give Chris Ensminger the ball and let him operate and we came out on top.
Jimmy Mckinney stated after the big win in Trier that many teams were afraid of the Skyliner defense. I guess Bonn didn´t feel any of that?
They are a very good defensive team and a big reason for their success lately had been their defense. We just trier to get the ball inside and it worked out well.
Is Chris Ensminger the best 38 year old player you have ever seen?
Yes he is. What he is able to do at his age is impressive. He doesn´t have to rely on athletic ability, but he is so smart and can create so well with both hands. I think that he will be able to play as long as he wants.
What was your impression of Beko BBL Skyliner Devin Gibson?
He is a good player. It wasn´t easy getting the bulk with the Thompson injury, but he did a solid job.
The Telekom Baskets Bonn are the underdog against the Brose Baskets Bamberg. What kind of series can we await?
We have nothing to lose and know exactly how Bamberg plays. We just have to go in and fight and hope to surprise some people. We have to keep game close at the end and see what happens. Maybe we can steal a game in Bamberg.
Does the all around strong Bamberg roster kind of erase the absence of American John Goldsberry?
Yes they do. They have guys like Suput, Slaughter and Tadda coming from the bench that when one player comes out, a new guy is able pick up what was left. Their deep roster is a big reason for their success.
When talking about the Telekom Baskets Bonn, one usually mentions Chris Ensminger, Tony Gaffney or Jared Jordan. Where would the team be without the mostly consistent Bene Veikalis?
He doesn´t get enough credit. He can shoot and drive and is a good teammate. I am happy that he is coming back next season.
How much has young German Jonas Wolfarth-Bottermann improved since your first season in Bonn?
He has improved so much from my first time, but even this season he has improved a lot. He did a great job protecting the rim against Frankfurt. He is always active on defense and doesn´t need to always score, but important is rebounding, blocking shots and defense.
Is a Jared Jordan to Tony Gaffney pass as impressive as a John Stockton to Karl Malone pass?
Well we aren´t as good as them as they were unbelievable, but Tony and I have a good connection. He understands that when he runs the floor, that I will get him the ball. We have a great relationship on the court and the fans are always awaiting an ally-op from us.
Why was your ally-op to Tony Gaffney in the Frankfurt game the best?
I think that Tony said that. I will have to look at the replay again, but Tony does all the hard work, so if he said it was the best then he must be right.
Can Tony Gaffney return to the NBA soon?
The NBA likes players like a Tony Gaffney who are athletic and can jump like he does. He can fit into any team. He does all the small things like the hustle plays and blocking shots. I think that he could get back to the NBA.
You come from Hartford which is between Boston and New York. Are you more a Red Sox or Yankees fan?
My dad is a Red Sox fan. I like the Yankees, but am not such a diehard fan like Tony Gaffney is of his Red Sox.
What was your fondest memory of playing prep school basketball at Kingswood?
It was a smaller school, but the experience was fun. Some of my best friends were on the team. I had a good coach who helped me develop. It seemed like a long time ago, but it is always nice looking back.
Who were your NBA idols as a kid?
My favorite was always Michael Jordan. I also liked Steve Nash.
You have made so many amazing assists in your career. What assist is still missing from the Jared Jordan highlight film?
I have no idea. Any assist is good for me.
After leading the NCAA in assists in your last two seasons, did you think that you would get drafted by the NBA?
After my senior year there was some talk leading up to the NBA draft, but I never really gave it so much thought. I think that looking back it is always cool to say that you were drafted by an NBA team.
Do you have any more ambition of getting to the NBA?
I have no more ambition of playing summer league or going to a training camp. I want to concentrate on a career in Europe. I like living in Europe and playing here.
In 2008-2009, you played in the D-league for the Rio Grande Vipers averaging 9,0apg. Were you surprised that no NBA team asked for your services?
Before I went to the Vipers, I was close to making the Hornets and I decided to stay in the D-league and give it one more chance, but I didn´t return.
At Rio Grande, you played together with EnBW Ludwigsburg player Kurt Looby. Ex Ludwigsburg player Terrell Harris made it to the NBA, can Looby?
He started very late and is still developing. He is similar to a Gaffney and that is what the NBA is looking for. He has long arms and can block shots. I wouldn´t be surprised if he got to the NBA.
Where is it easier to gat an assist in Greece or Beko BBL?
It is weird in Greece that sometimes you don´t get an assist after aj ump shot, but then again they give an assist when a player gets fouled. The style is more up and down in the Beko BBL and you have better chances of getting an assist
Who was your best opponent in Greece?
Dimitris Diamantidis was the best. I always watched him on TV and it seemed like he got better each team when I saw him. He can really do it all.
Who was your best opponent in the Beko BBL?
PJ Tucker who is so hard to match up against.
What were the most free throws that you made in a row without missing?
What was your most crazy shot in a game?
My freshman year at Marist, I hit a shot before halftime against Sienna from our own free throw line.
Who will win the NBA title?
I think the Miami Heat will. It would be nice for Lebron James because he has taken so much heat from the Media.
Can Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks upset the Thunder?
When Dirk gets going then he can really carry a team, but I think that the Thunder are too athletic and too good of a team to lose.
What was the last DVD movie that you saw?
Contraband with Mark Wahlberg.
Thanks Jared for the chat.
