How much have The Gloria Giants improved since the first meeting this season?

They play more together as a team. They are running their plays better and have more options. They are passing the ball better and more and looking for the extra pass more.

How difficult has it been not having Jeff Gibbs and Lou Campbell this season?

Many teams lost good players this season and it is a common thing in the BEKO BBL that players come and go.

How important has been getting John Allen?

It has been very important getting him. He has a strong game and gives us needed energy from the bench. It is important for us that our starters get a rest and we get production from the bench.

Can the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven make the playoffs with the point guard duo of Copeland/Thomas?

You still have to give them some time. They both were injured  alot this season. However I think that when they are healthy that we can be very successful as a team with them at point guard.

On what things do the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven still need to work on to be a sure playoff team?

We have to improve our defense especially on the pick and roll. We have to play more consistently on defense as well. There tend to be periods of 4-5 minutes in games where we are not concentrated on defense. Against lesser teams, we can still get by playing bad defense, but the stronger teams then are able to pull away. On offense we can play more consistent for 40 minutes.

How much as Torrell Martin improved this season?

The difference to last season is his consistency this season. I dont think that he has one weak game this season. He is more versatile this season and his passing has improved.

You are playing your second season in Bremerhaven. What is the biggest difference to Cologne?

Cologne concentrated more on defense and set plays while in Bremerhaven the team is more offense minded and like to run with the ball.

How much have you developed as a player since the first day of practice 2009 in Bremerhaven?

I think I have made a big jump since then something I never would have thought could have happened. I showed in Cologne that I could play in the BEKO BBL. I improved my defense in Cologne and now since being in Bremerhaven have been able to work on my offense. I am more versatile on offense now. I can penetrate and post up and I play more aggressive.

Did you ever think 3-4 years ago that you would be a BEKO BBL Allstar starter at age 21?

I would never have thought that because I always set smaller goals. I also would never have set goals as a 16 year old with being a BEKO BBL Allstar at age 21.

What is the most important thing that you have learned from coach Doug Spradley?

He has taught me to be more aggressive on offense. I also have the freedom to take more shots here and just let me use the freedom whenever I want.

What is a strength in your game that isnt always noticed right away?

I play very controlled and like to set up my teammates.

Who were basketball idols as a kid?

I came from a small town Gummersbach and I liked this local street baller named Alexander Norell who had tryouts with Leverkusen and Alba Berlin, but never made it there.

How strong did the finance crisis in Cologne make you?

I was able toget playing time which helped my development. For years the club was focusing on winning the BBL title, but then all of a sudden they had to play young German players. Tibor Pleiss and I really profited from this.

You also played together with Phoenix Sun Marcin Gortat. What funny story do you have baout him?

I could write a book about Marcin Gortat. I still dont know of a player that worked as hard as him. we hardly had any free time there. At times we didnt have an off day in three months. Even if we had a morning off, Marcin was practicing and he would get mad if he had to stop. He started playing basketball very late, but I remember his first day of practice where we had easy passing drills and his passes were flying left and right, but he always had that goal to be the best. His goal was always the nBA from morning until night that was all which was on his mind.

You played Eurocup with 16 years. What do you remember from your first club international game?

I dont remembe rif it was my first game but we were playing Ceramica against Luis Scola and I came in at the end of the game and made a lay up and three pointer. That was a big moment for me.

Who was your best opponent at the 2010 World Championships in Turkey?

I would say Carlos Delfino of Argentina and the guy that played for Angola. I cant remember his name but he hit us with 30 points.

What can Germany achieve at the 2011 European Championships?

THe World Championships in Turkey was an important experience for our young team. I think anything is possible if Nowitzki and Kaman return.

What were the most free throws that you made in a row?

50.

What was your most crazy shot in a game or practice?

I made a shot over the back board in practice.

Thanks Phil for the
