Jason Boone Looking To Make History At The Eurochallenge Final 4

Jason Boone is a 24 year old 198cm power forward/center from Sugar Loaf, New York. He is playing his third season with BG Goettingen.

He played at New York University(NCAA 3) from 2003-2007. In his senior year, he played 28 games averaging 14.1ppg, 9.6rpg, 2.4bpg, 2.9apg, FG: 63.0%, FT: 64.3%. Two seasons ago, he played at Bernau(Regionalliga) before making the jump up three leagues to MEG Goettingen. Last  season, he averaged 4.4ppg, 4.0rpg, FG: 53.7%.

This season, he is averaging 21 minutes per game and is averaging 11,0ppg, 5,6rpg and 1,1bs.

He took some time to talk to German Hoops about the current BG Goettingen season.

How does BG Goettingen continue to win games despite injuries and foul trouble in the last months?

It has to do with how hard we work. We come in well prepared and execute our game plan well. We win some games and lose some games.

What was your impression of new Skyliner coach Gordon Herbert?

The team seems different. I saw Frankfurt in the Cup and they try to out work teams. They are very athletic at the guard position. There seems to be some structure in their game now.In the first game under the new coach, I think Frankfurt executed their game plan from top to bottom for 40 minutes. They did what they wanted to picking and choosing how to play and when to slow down the game.

How fit is BG Goettingen really? Will it have enough gas for the playoffs?

We are starting to get fit again for the playoffs. Our biggest concern is the Eurochallenge now. We have some small injuries that should be cured by then. The little aches and pains seem to go away quickly when the big games come.

You are playing your third season in Goettingen. How do you like it in Goettingen?

I love Goettingen. It is like my home away from home. I know the city like the back of my hand. I can´t speak highly enough about the fans and management. It is never easy being away from home for 10 months, but I feel very comfortable in Goettingen.

If someone had told you before the season that BG Goettingen would be in three championships in mid April what would you have said?

I would have said thank you for your belief in us. As the season progressed, we always believed that we could be very successful. If you look at the leadership of Ben Jacobson and hard work of John Little, it is not surprising that we are there where we are. Most guys have played together last season so I think that has really helped and we each go to bat for each other.

BG Goettingen plays a very aggressive and quick style. Do you think teams will find a way to consistently stop BG Goettingen in the future?

That would be hard. It is difficult to prepare for our style. The x and o´s will not beat us. Teams don’t pratice handling pressure. We practice very hard and when the fourth quarter comes, we aren´t worn down like our opponent. If we can rebound and play defense for 40 minutes well then we always will have a good chance to win.

Describe how close the relationship is between coach John Patrick and the team?

Coach Patrick makes the team feel comfortable. The reason for our success is that he gets each guy on the same page.

How difficult is it to play without guys like Dwayne Anderson and Chester Frazier?

It has been tough, but each guy on the team has stepped up in their absence. D.A is getting better and we hope to have Chester Frazier back for the Eurochallenge.

The team has many great role players, but honestly where would the team be without Taylor Rochestie?

Taylor brings a strong element to the team. He is a great offensive player that is tough to stop. He started the season coming off the bench, but he always got better and has been our MVP this season. He loves to win and his focus now is the Eurochallenge and I am sure he will be big in the playoffs.

What was your childhood like in New York?

I had a great childhood. I went to a lot of Yankees and Knicks games. There is no city better than New York.

Who were your NBA idols growing up?

My idols were Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing. I don’t have any idols now, because I strive to play against the NBA players one day. I am a big fan of Lebron James though. I hope that he wins the NBA title this year.

To what NBA player would you compare your game to?

I would compare my game to Jason Maxiell, because he is a bit undersized and has to rely on his physical strength just like I do to be successful.

What was your nice memory from your time at New York University?

I had a game winning tip in dunk in my junior year. It was also my best statistical game. On the play, I was double teamed and kicked the ball out and then made the game winning tip dunk.

Explain how you came from the NCAA3 into the BEKO BBL? Were you scouted poorly?

Playing NCAA3 basketball turned off many coaches. They looked at bigger schools or division one schools. I always had to work harder than the rest to prove what I could do. I knew a guy at college who set up a try out with BG Goettingen.

Do you follow your ex team Bernau? There seems to be a huge basketball hysteria going on up there?

Yes it is crazy up there. They moved up to the PRO B. My old coach came to the Oldenburg game last week with a jersey. Bernau was my first basketball home in Europe and I wish tham all the best.

There aren´t many players that moved from NCAA3 to the BEKO BBL. What has improved most with your game?

My defense has improved most. In college, I finished over smaller guys, but when I came to the BEKO BBL, it was a big adjustment as guys were bigger. I had to learn to play strong defense and get easy buckets on offense.

Who was the best player that you ever played against?

Ron Artest. I played against him last summer in a summer league where NBA players like Jason Williams and Ryan Gomes also played.

Who wins a one on one? You or Christopher McNaughton?

Who get the ball?

You do.

I win.

You also maintain your blog. How did you come about starting this?

I keep my family and friends back home in touch with what I do in Germany. It is a way to keep busy and also inform them how my basketball career is going.

What was the last DVD that you saw?

Blindside. It was a great movie.

Thanks Jason for the chat.
