Vincent Bailey (SC Rasta Vechta)Size Doesn’t Matter To Me, Its Whoever Wants It The Most And I Want Every Rebound I Can Get My Hands On

Vincent Bailey is a 22 year old 201cm forward that will begin his professional basketball career in Germany with Pro A club SC Rasta Vechta. H eplayed at  Lincoln Memorial (NCAA2) from 2001-2014 and as a senior averaged 21,6ppg and 9,8rpg. He won the SAC Tournament in 2011 and 2014. He talked to German Hoops about basketball.

Vincent thanks for talking to German Hoops. Where are you at the moment and how have you been enjoying your summer?

Right now I’m in Atlanta,Ga. Getting prepared for the upcoming season with Rasta. My summer has been great just been working out to stay on top of my game.

Any player coming from college especially from Div2 can be more than thrilled getting a professional basketball job so quickly. How blessed are you that you have landed a job with German Pro A team SC Rasta Vechta?

Being Div 2 I’m sure people have there doubt’s about me. But I’ve been doubted all my life and I am very blessed to have this opportunity to show what I am capable of. I am very motivated to be on top of my game and can’t wait to start with Rasta Vachta this upcoming season.

The Key To Basketball Success On The Court With Greek Coach George Filkinis

George Filkinis is a Greek basketball coach with over 30 years of experience. He has won 11 titles as a head coach and 6 as an assistant coach. He has coached teams like Marousi, Asteras BC, AO Arion,  Irakleion, AO Sporting, Achilles  Cyprus, Panathinaikos Cyprus, and AO Lamias.  He has coached 680 official games  and his record is 477 ( 70,15%) wins and 203 (20,85%). He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.

Thank you coach for talking to German Hoops again . I’ld like to ask you were you’ll work this season .

It’s my pleasure dear Miles to talk again to my German basketball friends via your site . Up to now I haven’t agreed with some team . I had some contacts but finally no agreement was reached .

Can you give a possible explanation to this fact ?

Gladly.  First of all I wanted to work in specific countries , which the teams and the leagues I know very well , as I watch them closely more than 10 years. Certainly I knew from the beginning , that some of my principles and rules as a man and as a coach and the way I play the game , will be extremely difficult to become accepted. But I got the decision to make a try as I think that I have too much to give to the team that will trust me. As I said many times , my results and my rates are my only weapon and my only credentials.Certainly at the five countries I addressed specifically there is a logic of “persons recycling” , as every year the same coaches are transferred” from one group to another , even if their results the last season were not good at all in accordance with the players they had in their hands and with the ambitions of their teams.Of course this phenomenon is inexplicable to me , but totally respected by my side , as you can not force anyone to work with you , if he doesn’t like you or if he doesn’t like to see his team better. Then , because I play the game a little differently , I claimed to choose the players that they are able to play like my way and not to accept those that the team managers of some teams wanted.Another reason was that I want to represent myself and to talk personally with the groups , contrary to the most coaches who supported by “strong” agents.

Lorenzo thanks for talking to German Hoops. Welcome back to Germany. After four years away you are back in the Beko BBL. You played three seasons in Hungary and one in Latvia. From a basketball stand point has time flown by?

Time has flown by pretty quickly. I still feel like a young guy but,A lot has changed with my game since I was in Giessen.

You were a young buck coming to Giessen in 2009 at age 24. Since then you have gathered further basketball experience won a title, assist crown and played Eurochallenge. How has your game developed since you played in Giessen. What kind of a Lorenzo Williams will we see on the court in 2014 with the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven?

My game has evolved a lot. My experience with different coaches and styles of play have made me a well-rounded player. You will see a player who has matured and honed his game. Whatever the staff needs me to do, I can do. I’ve added more things to my game.

Cardell Mcfarland(Hopefully Other Coaches Liked My Passion And Love For The Game And I Could Help Some Team Next Year In Germany)

Cardell Mcfarland is a 26 year old 182cm point guard from Evansville, Indiana that just finished his second professional season and first for the Giants Nordlingen and was down under playing for Gladstone Port City Power (Australia-QB).. He started his basketball career at Missouri State and then played his last two seasons for  Ky Wesleyan (NCAA2). Last season as a rookie he played for CS Farul Constanta (Romania-Division A): 7 games: 12.4ppg, 3.3rpg, 2.6apg, FGP: 50.0%, 3PT: 38.1%, FT: 88.5%. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.

Cardell thanks for talking to German Hoops. You have ended your season early with two games left. How difficult was it doing that as the leader of the team?

I’ve been playing with bone spurs in my ankle for the past 6 months. It had been really bothering me over the last few weeks. Went to the doctor and he advise me to shut it down a few weeks and rest.

What is your summary of the season of the Giants Nordlingen. The club lost the first two games combined by 67 points and lost four of the first five games. Why did the club start so slow and was this hard to recover from?

I think my absence is really affecting the team because they were so used to my creating and making plays for the team or myself. Right now just seems like they are lacking confidence.

You totally dominated the Pro B averaging 24,0ppg. Was it for you like being a man playing with kids on the court?
I just approached the season game by game and prepared myself for the opponent. Watched film of other teams, and look at how I can be affect offensively to make plays for myself or the team.

Last season you played for CS Farul Constanta (Romania-Division A). How was the adjustment coming from the Romanian league? Was coming to Germany a small step backwards in terms of the level of play?
Coming from Romania League top league to Germany Pro B league you would think the talent level would be different but there is good players everywhere at every level. In Romania I didn’t get the chance to prove myself as a player. Which caused me to leave after 7 games and other issues I had in Romania. Germany Pro B surprised me with the level it wasn’t that bad. Some German BBL players play in Pro B & it was some good Americans. My coach was telling me all season the league is better than it’s ever been.

You had some great games. You scored in double figures 15 times and over 30 points four times. What was your season highlight?

Highlight of the season is beating Leipzig in OT with only 3 players remaining on the court. I believe 4 players fouled out for us. We only traveled with 7 for that game. And scoring 15 straight games with 20 or more shooting over 60% from the field for a Point Guard is amazing.

Did you ever feel pressure to have to carry the team. You were the first and best scoring threat. Did you like the fact that the team might say ok Cardell get us some points now?

Never felt pressure to score. I didn’t have to force up shots. I believe the most shots I attempted in a game this year was 19. So I didn’t have to shoot a lot to get my points.

You are a scoring point guard that can also set up his teammates. What is a strength in your game that doesn´t always get noticed?

Strength in my game that doesn’t always get noticed probably would say my defense. I think people notice what I do on the offensive end but defense is just as good. Quick feet and my toughness I’m only 5’11 167 pounds and never back away from a challenge.

What young German player on the roster do you see having a very good career in the future?

J.R he’s 17 if he focus and develop his body, and basketball game he can be good cause his size and shooting ability.

Which player in the German Pro B was your toughest opponent on the court?

I really can’t give you the toughest player off the top of my head but it was good players all around the board.

Do you think that you will return to Germany? I am sure making the next step to the German pro A is in your mind set. Josh Parker dominated the Pro B last season and even made it to the Beko BBL this season.

I’ve had other coaches from around Germany come watch me play this season so hopefully they liked my passion and love for the game and I could help some team next year in Germany.

What was your impression of young German Max Gentner? How were you able to make him a better player?

Max was one of the best German shooters on the team. And ankle injury kept him sidelined for most of the season. But hopefully he did learn from my work ethic on and off the court. So I wasn’t able to spend that much time with him on the court.

You played two seassons at Missouri State. What were the main reasons for leaving and going to  Ky Wesleyan (NCAA2)?

At Missouri state was just a freshman starting on a good mid major Division 1 team. had some issues off the court that comes with being young and immature. Which led to my departure for a new college.

At Missouri State you played two years with Kyle Weems. What was the most amazing thing that you saw him do in a game or practice?

That’s a tough question about Kyle. Kyle can get hot at any moment from 3pt line. In practice or game he can make like 6 or 7 in a row if he gets hot.

He played NBA Summer league last season. What is missing from his game to reach the NBA?

I think Kyle is missing ball handling and creating his own shot. Kyle plays his best being a stretch 4 man cbeause he is deadly from 3pt line. Just give Kyle time before his career is done he will play a game in the NBA. He has the size for a 3 man and shooting ability.

At Ky Wesleyan (NCAA2), you really tore up the league in two seasons there. You shot over 40% both years. Is shooting that you especially improved on in your two years there?

I shot over 40% in 3pt because I got open opportunities when they doubled Anthony down low on the block. Which made it an easier on me.

How did Todd Lee help you get prepared to becoming a professional best? What was the most important thing that you learned from him?

My last two season of college Todd played me at Point Guard which I had the freedom and allowed me to create. I never played point guard before then. Always was an undersized 2 guard.

You played two seasons there with current Essen player Anthony Young. Do you follow his game in Germany and can he make the next step up a level?

Yes Anthony and I speak almost every week through text and we both follow each other still. He’s having a good season in Pro A. I believe Anthony will at some point of his career will be playing at a high level.

Both you and Young had great careers at Ky Wesleyan (NCAA2). What is your fondest memory with him on and off the court?

Fondest memory Anthony and on one games was probably the most fun. We both don’t like to lose and that winning attitude is what we both have in common. We went to war with each other just to make each other better and it payed off for the both of us.

You played as a rookie for  CS Farul Constanta (Romania-Division A). What was your wake up call to being a rookie in a foreign country Romania?
Last season in Romania I really learned the business of European basketball. Romania wasn’t a good experience coming from college to Europe. But I learned from that experience and it helped me grow as a person and ball player.

What will you be doing this summer? And how does a Cordell Mcfarland work out day on and off the court look like?

Summer best time for me. I really work on my game with a personal trainer who also played in Europe in many leagues. Weight room 5 days a week. And on the court 3 days a week. And probably some pick up ball on the weekends. Off the court normally spend a lot of time with my family.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

Last DVD would be We’re the Millers

Thanks Cardell for the chat.

Jason Boone(You Work Hard To Build A Legacy As A Player, And In The Last Two Years, Mine Has Been Jeopardized. I Will Do Everything In My Power To Get Back To The Winning Ways)

Jason Boone is a 28 year old 198cm power forward/center from Sugar Loaf, New York. He recently finished his third season with the s. Oliver Baskets Wurzburg playing 28 games and averaging 8,4ppg and 4,1rpg. He played three seasons for BG Goettingen. He played at New York University(NCAA 3) from 2003-2007. In his senior year, he played 28 games averaging 14.1ppg, 9.6rpg, 2.4bpg, 2.9apg, FG: 63.0%, FT: 64.3%. In 2007-2008, he played at Bernau(Regionalliga) before making the jump up three leagues to MEG Goettingen. In 2008-2009, he averaged 4.4ppg, 4.0rpg, FG: 53.7. In 2009-2010, he won the Eurochallenge playing EuroChallenge: 16 games: 10.7ppg, 6.8rpg, 1.0apg, FGP: 59.6%, FT: 53.8%; German League: 35 games: 9.1ppg, 6.1rpg, FGP: 60.3%, FT: 55.9%. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.

Jason thanks for talking to German Hoops. Where are you at the moment and how has your summer been going?

At this current moment I’m in Denver. But I’ve been moving a mile a minute so far during my summer vacation. I’ve already been to New York, Las Vegas, Kansas City and Omaha. And I have a few more places I need to get to before the summer ends.

I saw some photos on social media and you are already very early in beast mode getting in shape. Other players tend to take off May and June and slowly start to get in shape in July for the upcoming season. You will be starting your eighth professional season and will be 29. You will be in your best age as a player. Are your expectations very high this upcoming season after missing the Beko BBL playoffs two seasons in a row?

I’m used to playing in May and June and then resting in July so it has not been too tough to stay active during the beginning of my vacation. I will take most of June off and then start really getting back after it in July. But I tend to leave the basketball alone for a while in the summer and play a lot of tennis and boxing. When I finally do pick the basketballs back up next year, my expectations are through the roof. You work hard to build a legacy as a player, and in the last two years, mine has been jeopardized. I will do everything in my power to get back to the winning ways.

Last season with the s.Oliver Baskets Wurzburg was a season to forget. Marcel Schroeder hat to leave early as the club started off slow and Stefan Koch came in, but couldn´t save the team. Was the team put to together wrong or what were some of the reasons why the club couldn´t have a more solid season?

Having time to analyze it after the fact, I’m blaming a lot of it on pride. Basketball is a team game and you need to trust that the players coaches and organization are all on the same page. We haven’t had that in the last few years.

You were injured during the season and was off for six weeks. This was the first time in your professional basketball career where you had a more serious injury. What kind of experience was it being out and having to do the whole rehab process and coming back. What did you learn during this time that will help you for the future with situations like that?

Injuries are part of the game and I try to always keep myself in the best physical shape to avoid those things but sometimes they are out of your control. Patience and determination will always get you back but in the interim I had to learn a lot about trust. Trusting the doctors to diagnose it correctly, trusting my teammates to pick up the slack while I was out and trusting my ankle to hold up once I returned.

There weren´t really very many positive highlights to the season, but if you ahd to pick one which would you take? You did lose to MBC, but you ahd your best stat game of 23 points and nine boards.

The biggest highlight of this season was the day it ended. All things considered, the previous season wasn’t so bad. Tying for the last playoff spot with six people having surgery during the year, I can take that. But this year was miserable. It made me question if my lifelong dream of playing professional basketball was worth it. And when it gets that bad, you just can’t wait for it to be over.

You have seen the development of Maxi Kleber the last three years in Wurzburg. Where would you rate him at the moment against other young German forwards like Danilo Barthel or Elias Harris? What kind of an impact do you see him making in the next 3-4 years?

I can’t say enough about Maxi. The kid works his tail off on a daily basis. He can be the best player in the BBL very soon. He obviously has to stay healthy for that to happen and be in a situation, playing for a coach, that lets him thrive. But in terms of skill set and potential, there isn’t anyone I’ve seen that’s even close.

You have played the last six seasons with Ben Jacobson and John Little and one could call you the three amigos. The chance that all of you might be together are little unless John Patrick brings you to Ludwigsburg. How thankful you have you been of having the chance to play so long together with two players something that isn´t as typical in Europe?

That has honestly been the biggest joy of my professional basketball career. I ask myself why Oldenburg keeps bringing back Ricky Paulding, or Bamberg keeps bringing back Anton Gavel. There are certain guys that just know how to win. I’ve been lucky enough to call two of them my best friends and teammates for my entire career. And if this season was the last one we get to spend together it’s kind of bittersweet because we didn’t get a chance to show what we really could do these past two seasons.

Ever since John Patrick had to depart Wurzburg in 2012 after the playoff loss to ratiopharm Ulm, it seems like the club has gone down hill. Patrick was very important for bringing so much success to the club. When you look back at the last three years where would the club have been had Patrick stayed on board and there had not been such a rift between him and management?

It’s difficult to say. From my understanding, things had gotten so bad between Patrick and the management that something had to change the year after we lost in the semifinals. One thing is for certain, as John Patrick proves again and again, he would have done a better job of getting winners on the team. I haven’t had the luxury of having a Chester Frazier or an Ivan Elliot since they left the team two years ago. And that’s not a knock to all of my teammates over the past two years, but definitely to most of them. A lot of them just didn’t know what it took to win.

You will not play for the s.Oliver Baskets Wurzburg next season. Would you accept the possibility of going to Ludwigsburg? There has been speculation that Chris Mcnaughton may go to Ludwigsburg. How big of an option could playoff team Ludwigsburg be for you?

I would love the chance to stay in Germany and prove myself yet again. And Ludwigsburg would be the perfect landing spot, especially if I had a chance to play with the other two amigos. But with the way the talks are going right now, I may have a chance to play for some EuroCup teams and some teams outside of Germany. I’m really trying to take my time in the decision making process to put myself in the best opportunity to be successful.

You take a lot of pride in working out and keeping in basketball shape. How does a normal Jason Boone work out day look like on and off the court in 2014?

I’ve had to taper my workouts as my career has gone on. You aren’t allowed to be stronger than anyone in the BBL these days. The way the games are called, pure strength can get you punished. But I still like to do a lot of body weight exercises to increase my mobility and flexibility. In the summer I like to do a lot of pool workouts and Yoga. Partially because of the low impact but mostly because of the bikinis and yoga pants. On the court I just like to play if there is some decent competition, lots of free throws and tons of stretching.

The San Antonio Sprus beat the Miami Heat in the 2014 NBA final 4-1. This silenced many of the Lebron supporters. Where is your personal stand on this whole Lebron debate on where his standing is at the moment as greatest player? Michael Jordan has six NBA rings and Larry Bird three.

I’ve never been one to compare the greats. They each had their era and there are too many “what ifs.” LeBron is the best player in the game but the Heat lost to the best team and arguably the best coach. There’s a reason the Spurs play so well together, the pieces fit. Basketball is a simple game when you get the right pieces to fit. My career has been on opposite ends of that spectrum so I know what I’m talking about.

How good is your golf game? You also have been playing during the summer. What annoys you the most on the course about the game of golf in general when not everything is going your way?

My golf game needs some work. But I finally play enough golf to where an investment in the right size clubs is worth it. So I have a funny feeling it will be improving as the summer goes on. That putting is going to be the death of me though. My learning of golf has many parallels to my learning of basketball. The strength was always there, but it’s the soft touch around the hole that I need to work on.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

Field Of Dreams was the last DVD I watched. I was on my way to Omaha for the College World Series with a quick stop in Iowa. It seemed fiting.

Thanks Jason for the chat.

The Miles Basketball Minute: The Fraport Skyliners Grab Bag Season Isn´t Rewarded With A Playoff Spot as Party Favor

Last season there were many up and down experiences for the 2004 Beko BBL champion Fraport Skyliners and the only thing missing to really make this season a tad more bizarre would have been having ex Skyliner Malick Badiane return and have a “who can catch the basketball better with Aziz Ndiaye,Hollywood legend Arnold Schwarzenegger watching a game and declaring Johannes Voigtmann his long lost son, Danilo Barthel white men can jump Barthel actually tearing down a rim on one of his crushing dunks, Konstantin Klein growling into the ear of German national player Heiko Schaffartzik  and actually causing him hearing loss in one ear or Oklahoma native Jacob Burtschi having a fight over hair pieces with ratiopharm Ulm forward Keaton Nankivil. Before the season commenced, I predicted that anything could happen to the Fraport Skyliners in the standings as it was to be a grab bag season for Gordon Herbert and company. Back in the day even at the most boring children´s birthday parties like at the local pizza place munching on soggy pie, trying to find humor at the bowling alley while trying to hit a strike and stay clear of the gutter, riding lame donkeys up and down the tiny backyard in your home or playing boring board games while counting each second to when it was time to go home, there was almost always a constellation prize for kids when the party was over with the traditional grab bag or party favor. This going home present was a way to say thanks for coming and by the way here is a gift for you.  Gifts range from tiny toys, candy and pencils. Once you are of a mature age and are able to visit a wedding, there a person has the chance to get a more sophisticated gift like classic favors that can go from the classic sugared almonds or  delicious chocolates to candles and scented soaps. Modern gift trends include CDs with the most desired music of the bride and groom, shot glasses filled with colored candy or beautiful picture frames with a photo of the couple. So what did all this grab bag jibber jabber have to do with the 2013-2014 Fraport Skyliners? Well this was a team that had been constructed in a way that it would been hard to make a real defined prediction what this team was able to achieve and it was sort of like getting a grab bag served at a function and not knowing what was inside it. Guessing how many wins the Fraport Skyliners would achieve last season was no different than having had to predict how many cheese balls legendary comedian Chris Farley could have eaten in the cheese ball machine in a minute, how many times Allen Iverson would utter practice in a practice 2 press conference or how many goals soccer god Christiano Ronaldo would hammer into the goal this season. Just the notion of not knowing what this club was capable to achieve made the season so exciting and unpredictable for the Fraport Skyliners.

Maurice Williams( I Will Always Play This Game Of Basketball With Pure Passion)

Maurice Williams is a 30 year old 192cm guard from Gary, Indiana that just finished his fifth professional season and fourth in Hannover. He played at  Medanos JC (NJCAA) before turning professional in 2009. He played briefly in the ABA for teams like  North Texas Fresh (ABA), Arlington Bulldogs (ABA), and North Dallas Vandals (ABA). He came to Hannover late in the 2010-2011 season. Last season for Hannover he played 21 games: 9.4ppg, 2.2rpg, 1.2apg, 1.4spg, FGP-2(67.0%), 3PT: 29.7%, FT: 80.7%. He helped Hannover to the 2012 and 2014 Pro B North regular season titles. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.

Maurice thanks for talking to German Hoops. You are still in Hannover, Germany and the season has been over for many weeks. Don´t you miss being at home and in Indiana Pacers country especially now where they are in the playoffs?

Yes im still here in Hannover enjoying the off season with my girlfriend. I do miss my family but never was a Pacers fan always been a fan of good basketball no matter what team is doing it.

Hannover were 2014 Pro B north co champions, but like in 2012, the club was ousted in the playoffs. I hate to bring this up, but was Hannover simply just a better regular season team than a playoff team?

I wouldn’t say that I think it takes a special group of guy’s to stay focused and keep the momentum protect the ball and players 1-12 has to be locked in to accomplish any championship

In 2012, Hannover lost in three games to SC Rasta Vechta and in 2014 in three games to Baunach. What was missing this time around against Baunach to move on?

To be honest we had what it took to finish them and move on but I have to give Baunach their credit as a team they out played us they played to win and we played not to lose.

After the series loss to Baunach, how sure were you that this team could actually had the ability to move up to the German Pro A?

I have nothing but respect for Baunach. For them to be a young team they executed their game plan well and I was rutting for them to go all the way and they did.

You had a solid season for Hannover playing 21 games: 9.4ppg, 2.2rpg, 1.2apg, 1.4spg, FGP-2(67.0%), 3PT: 29.7%, FT: 80.7%. How content were you with your season on the court?

To me my season was ok but I feel like I could have been much more effective. My rebounding could have been better and for sure 3 point and free throw percentage has to improve. And im putting in the work to improve in those areas.

One notices your very high field goal percentage which is very high for a guard. You were second in the Pro B with 67%. Does this have to do more with clever shot selection or just extra shooting practice after practices?

It has a lot to do with shot selection. I’m the type of player that tries to execute a coaches system so its easier to pick shots and I excel in transition.

You scored in double figures 11 times. What was your season highlight on the court with Hannover?

My highlights for this season I have to say is my in game dunks and there was a stretch in the season where the team had a lot of injuries and I stepped my game up and we went on our longest winning streak.

Your teammate German Tobias Welzel has been in Hannover like you since 2010. He started his basketball career with BG Goettingen and played Beko BBL and won the 2010 Eurochallenge. How has his development been the last four years. He is still young at 24, but can he make the jump back to the Beko BBL, or will he always be a solid division two player in Germany?

Tobi has improved each year and I do think he can make that jump to the BBL, but its easy for me to say its just all up to him and the work he puts in to improve

After playing in the minor leagues in the States in the ABA, you must be very thankful for playing years in Germany. Would you like to stay in Germany or could you see yourself going to another country?

Yes I can see myself living in Germany forever. When it comes to basketball anything is possible if I have an opportunity to play in another country why not but I LOVE Germany and I may get my citizenship.

You played college ball at Medanos JC (NJCAA). Have you gotten adjusted to having to always prove yourself wherever you have played? How important has self confidence been for you in your basketball career?

Yes I enjoy having to prove myself everywhere I go. Its motivation for me and its a great feeling to have if you knew where I came from to see me now.

What is a hidden strength in your game that doesn´t get noticed right away?

I’m a team first type of player I will never talk bad about my teammates, coaches, and management. I’m very down to earth and can get along with anybody.

If you could describe yourself in a few sentences as to why you could help any team at any level how would you do it?

I can expect any role that a coach has for me I will always bring energy to games and practice. I will always play this game of basketball with pure passion.

What dreams to do you still have as a professional basketball player? Where do you see yourself in five years?

My dreams as a professional basketball player is to take it as far as possible and continue to take the steps to better myself. In five years from now I would like to say I’ve helped a team or two reach their goals and continue to be a positive image for German basketball.

If Kendall Chones is chugging into the lane in practice and your in the way, what could you compare his bumping into you with? Lol

A BULL for sure he’s by far the strongest player I played with or against.

How does a normal summer workout program look like for Maurice Williams on and off the court?

Wake up breakfast then weight room, then I alternate Run, ride bike, swimming pool. Then lunch and every afternoon in the gym getting up shots (set and off the dribble).

Where is a place that you would like to go to this summer where you have never been to?

hahaha no Gary Indiana I love this city with all my heart I was born and raised but this is a city if your not from there or have family there then you probably don’t need to be there.

Do you see the Indiana Pacers continuing to be a very good NBA team in the years to come?

The Pacers have a good team and management. I would think they will make the right moves to accomplish their goals.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

The last DVD I watched was “The Quiet Ones”.

Thanks Maurice for the chat.

The Miles Basketball Minute: 2014 Beko BBL Final Preview: Alba Berlin-FC Bayern Munich 3-1

There are numerous classic scenes from the 1977 Hollywood block buster film Star Wars, but one that stands out is when Hans Solo aka Harrison Ford and Luke Skywalker aka Mark Hamill break into the death star to try to save Princess Leia and dress up as storm troopers to hide their tracks. Skywalker has the idea of putting hand cuffs on Chewbacca the faithful side kick of Han Solo. When Skywalker gets brushed away, he lets Han Solo do it since he is his trusty mate. With Beko BBL club Alba Berlin you have Marco Baldi as the CEO and person in charge like Han Solo and his side kick Sasa Obradovic who makes the club function on the court and in a way like Chewbacca so often the savior of the long lasting demise of the 8 time champion who only won three titles from 2003 to 2012. It seemed like Baldi made some wrong decisions in this time, but was dead on with getting Obradovic in 2012 as two cup titles have been added to the numerous hardware for the club and a third title is only three wins away. Ok this is a pretty weird comparison, but hey both duo´s are successful and even if Obradovic resembles American designer James Jannard founder of Oakley Inc with his bald head more than Chewbacca, it would be fun to see the three time European champion with Yugoslavia slip on a Chewbacca wig. After reaching the 2014 Beko BBL final with a convincing 69-61 victory against the Artland Dragons winning the series 3-1, one could witness Baldi coming over and giving the Serb a tender peck on the check. That just shows how strong the bond is between both men, but in terms of a peck on the cheek one could of imagined the lovable Chewbacca doing it to Hans Solo more than vice versa. Obradovic got the right players, formed a healthy chemistry, won 16 games in a row and won a cup as consistency has been a big staple for the success of Alba Berlin this season. Just everything has fit this season as the team has reached the final for the first time again since 2011 and despite all the talent on the court and success made, everyone has helped and if the Albatross mascot had secretly flown to the Artland arena for game four and given his two cents to the victory by annoying Tobi the dragon in his lab than only the faithful Artland mascot could confirm if that was true.

Alba Berlin continue to remain very consistent and consequent in the playoffs going their way having a 6-2 record. After disposing or ratiopharm Ulm 3-1, they then dismantled the Artland Dragons 3-1. This was a tougher series then it looked like as Alba Berlin won their three games by only a combined total of 16 points. If you reflect back on the first two games, with a little luck for Artland, Alba Berlin might have been heading back home in the hole 0-2 had they lost game one which they won 81-79 in overtime. Alba Berlin did a super job winning the rebound duel in each win, obviously taking advantage of their vast superiority under the glass. Alba Berlin didn´t shoot particularly well from outside, but displayed their ability to get the job done on offense in other ways which showed their cleverness. Alba Berlin also did a super job keeping David Holston in check in the last two wins especially in game four where the diminutive American  scored only five points and was limited to seven shots. All in all, Artland got to little support from their role players in the scoring department. Alba Berlin Reggie Redding was their most consistent player scoring in double figures in each game and leaving the floor twice as top scorer and was as versatile as always.

After pretty much gliding through the regular season in the Beko BBL with an overall 29-5 record and home court advantage in the playoffs, FC Bayern Munich didn´t have a comfortable cake walk, but moreover at times it seemed like they were in India performing fire-walking  tip toeing barefoot over a bed of hot stones as they only had a playoff record of 6-3 in the playoffs.  The EWE Baskets Oldenburg met FC Bayern Munich in the semi-finals and took Germany´s most famous sports team to the wire forcing five games. Had FC Bayern Munich not been able to win game two at home 74-72, then they would already been on summer vacation as Oldenburg was like a pesky mouse that had the audacity to annoy the neighborhood cat even though it would be at a major disadvantage. Oldenburg won a huge 105-103 double overtime game in game three in Munich and then returned home to win a hard fought game four 70-60. Even though FC Bayern Munich´s biggest fan and supporter and reason why the FC Bayern Munich project ever got off the ground Uli Hoeness  wasn´t able to be in attendance as he had already started his jail sentence, but had a competent stand-in with FC Bayern Munich soccer manager Matthias Sammer who looked as focused supporting the basketballers as when he is supporting the soccer team. In game 5, FC Bayern Munich stepped up and handled themselves like a champion team doing what they were supposed to do and win the big game. Oldenburg fought and stayed on their backs in the first half, but the many FC Bayern Munich offensive rebounds slowly started to gnaw at Oldenburg which slowly built the foundation of leading them to the finals. FC Bayern Munich stepped onto the court in the second half with an eight point lead and quickly built a 21-5 run which paved the victory for FC Bayern Munich. American Malcom Delaney hit a pair of three pointers which seemed to energize the whole team as they had five players in double figures and got added big shots from Boris Savovic and Heiko Schaffartzik in the fourth quarter.        Julius Jenkins led Oldenburg with 20 points, but the team had too little support from the rest. Not even the moral support of Travon Bryant who played at Missouri(NCAA) with Rickey Paulding could spark some added magic into the American as he combined with Nemanja Aleksandrov for only nine points. It was another big season for the EWE Baskets Oldenburg as they reached the final for the second straight season and third time in six years.

Before the season started most experts would have had an FC Bayern Munich, Alba Berlin or Brose Baskets Bamberg in the 2014 Beko BBL final. So in many ways this is no real surprise as it pits the first against the third. There will be many interesting duels in this series like Malcom Delaney-Clifford Hammonds, Bryce Taylor-Reggie Redding or John Bryant-Leon Radosevic, but  possibly the most watched duel will be between the suits on the sidelines between Svetislav Pesic and Sasa Obradovic. Both have won league and cup titles for one team in Germany Alba Berlin and Cologne and each is looking for their first title with a second club team in Germany. It will be the duel in a way between teacher and student as Pesic was head coach of the 2001 European champion Yugoslavia while Obradovic was his player. Both coaches are tough coaches that coach with a lot of heart, but it will come down to which one is more clever under pressure. FC Bayern Munich go into the series with home court advantage, but Alba Berlin go into the series with self confidence having swept the season series and have 72 hours more rest. Alba Berlin won the first game in Berlin 94-74 giving the German basketball world an early impression that the 8 time Beko BBL champion was a team to be reckoned with in the season. Alba Berlin dominated at the guard position as Clifford Hammonds, David Logan and Vojdan Stojanvoski combined for 53 points and Reggie Redding chipped in with 17 points and led the team in rebounds and assists. Alba Berlin dominated the boards 33-23 and didn´t let FC Bayern Munich find a groove on offense keeping them at 74 points and forcing them to cough up the ball 16 times. The second game of the season was a meaningless game as the season was already completed and there could be no movement made in the standings as Alba Berlin won in Munich 80-72. Alba Berlin was led by Reggie Redding with 21 points while David Logan steered 15 points in the win with five three pointers.  Alba Berlin shot very well from the parking lot with 14 three pointers. Even if FC Bayern Munich did control the boards 35-26, it was the annoying Alba Berlin defense again keeping FC Bayern Munich way below their season average at 72 points and stifled them from outside at 2/16. Both clubs have so much talent stocked at each position that in the end it will come down to which team plays the best team basketball. The most exciting duel will be the energy and explosiveness of Bryce Taylor against the versatile Mr allrounder Reggie Redding. Both teams come into the series having made their defense a staple during the season and in the last two games as Alba Berlin has given up an average of 64 points and Fc Bayern Munich an average of 66 points. Alba Berlin has to play their game which is defense orientated something that had been successful all season long, control the boards and have their guard fire power burning. The key player to get out of his comfort zone is Malcom Delaney the x-factor. When his game is off so is the game of FC Bayern Munich.  For FC Bayern Munich, they have to understand that all they have to do is play their game at home and that will be enough to for the title. If they can get into a groove early on offense in games and get their transition game going then they will be a very uncomfortable opponent for Alba Berlin. Limiting the guard play of Alba Berlin their x-factor and slowing down Reggie Redding will be vital as well. Maybe FC Bayern Munich will present the German basketball world with their full potential in the finals and if they do then they will win, but in reality Alba Berlin will win their ninth league title, because they will clamp down more and  play the better defense, motivation factor of Sasa Obradovic is always sky high and hard to combat,  have Jan Jagla who finally will win his first title in Germany.

Maurice Williams( I Truly Believe If He Is Given The Chance Richie Williams Can Play On Any Level And Compete With The Best)

Maurice Williams is a 30 year old 192cm guard from Gary, Indiana that recently completed his fourth season in Germany with  UBC Hannover Tigers (Germany-ProB) where he played 21 games averaging 9.4ppg, 2.2rpg, 1.2apg, 1.4spg, FGP-2(67.0%), 3PT: 29.7%, FT: 80.7%. In the 2011-2012 season, he was a teammate with new Fraport Skyliner Richard Williams and he took some time to reflect on Richard Williams the player for German Hoops.

Maurice, thanks for talking to German Hoops. The news that your ex teammate Richard Williams signed with the German Beko BBL team Fraport Skyliners. You played a season with Williams in Hannover. How happy are you about his chance to move up into a bigger market?

I am very happy and proud that he can showcase his talents for the Skyliners. They should be one of the top teams in the BBL next year

You played with Richie Williams in the 2011-2012 season with UBC Hannover. What was your first impression of him when you saw him on the court in Hannover?

My first impression was this guy is very quick with or without the ball, strong and plays with a lot of passion and hates to lose.

In the 2011-2012 season, UBC Hannover won the German Pro B north. How important a role did Richie Williams play in Hannover being so successful? Where would the team have been that season without a Richie Williams?

Well that season we had a very good group of guys and we all accepted and respected Richie as our leader, but for us not to have him I really can’t say what type of season we would have had but I am glad we got him.

You are four years older, but it was your first season in Europe and Williams had played briefly in Iceland. Williams was the star in Hannover while you were an important role player. Were you like a mentor for him or how did you guys make each other better on the court?

I wouldn’t say his mentor, but whenever Richie wanted to talk basketball or off the court issues I was there for him and vice versa even till this day we keep in touch.

How has the game of Richie Williams progressed over time since your days in Hannover?

I really think he’s the same player all he needed is the opportunity. He’s a very hard worker and has proven he can compete at a high level

I have rarely seen a more dedicated player than Richie Williams. He may only be 177cm, but his heart is as big as gold. Have you ever seen a player want to win as badly as him? I am sure one couldn´t talk to him after the game three loss to Vexhta?

Well besides myself Richie is very passionate when it comes to basketball. As bad as we both wanted to win the pro b that year Richie took the loss as motivation to get better

His game gets more noticed with his offense, but he belongs to the top defensive players in the Beko BBL last season with his 1,9spg. His hands are so quick. What other qualities on defense really stick out when you have to play against him?

He plays the passing lanes well and to be so short he can rebound he has the ability to get to all loose balls because of his quickness

To describe Williams as a scoring point guard isn´t totally correct because he can find his teammates equally well. If you could describe Williams to an NBA point guard who would it be?

I would describe him to no one! I truly believe if he is given the chance Richie Williams can play on any level and compete with the best

Williams now joins the Fraport Skyliners that is a very very young team. How do you see him fitting into that system? Wherever he has played in Germany, he has had good stats. Do you think he will be as motivated as ever after having such a hard luck season with SC Rasta Vechta?

Yes for sure due to the season he just went through he’s going to come back with a lot to prove, and Richie is coachable and can adjust his game to any system.

What was the most amazing thing that you ever saw Richie Williams do on the court in your time at Hannover?

One game he had like 20 points 10 assist 8 steals 6 rebounds and no turnovers

Many only know Williams as an amazing player, but few know him personally. Please describe an experience where you witnessed how Richie Williams the person was as a quality that most don´t know about?

Once Richie lets you in on his personal side for sure he’s a person you can trust and if he says he’s going to do something you can count on him very dependable

You have 14 inches on Williams, but who won the one on one games then in practice?

We never played but I will win and im going to leave it at that, but I have the most respect for Richie and wish him all the best.

Thanks Maurice for the chat.

Craig Blackmon(I Am The Guy Who’s Going To Make The Team Become A Family

Craig Blackmon is a 26 year old 193cm guard from Houston, Texas that recently completed his first season for Barmer TV (Germany-Regionalliga) where he averaged 19,0ppg, 7,7rpg, 2,1apg and 2,3spg. He started his basketball career in 2006 for  Howard Payne (NCAA) where he played until 2008. He then played at Texas-Tyler (NCAA3). Before coming to Europe last year, he got experience playing with the  Texas Legends (D-League) training camp; Rio Grande Valley Vipers (D-League). In 2011, he was drafted by the drafted by Houston Express (UBA,2rd(19). In 2011-2012, he played for the Houston Express (UBA) playing 10 games: 15.7ppg, 4.0rpg, 3.0apg, 1.3spg, FGP: 43.5%, 3PT: 42.4%, FT: 60.0%. Last season he played for the  KB Drita Gjilan (Kosovo-SuperLeague) averaging 20.6ppg, 4.3rpg, 3.6apg, 2.5 spg, FGP: 58%, 3PFG: 43%, FT: 83%. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.

Craig where are you at the moment and how are you enjoying your summer?

I’m finally back in Houston, had a small vacation got to visit family and a few places. Now I’m back to my offseason regimen, been training with Ex-NBA Coach John Lucas here in Texas.

You have played in Europe the last few years and coming home must always be a treat for any American. It is usually a place to eat that a player goes to first. What was the first place that you went to to get that real American dish again?

You are correct! I was so looking forward to coming home and having some crawfish! Down south we love crawfish season.

After playing for KB Drita Gjilan (Kosovo-SuperLeague) in 2012-2013, you came to Barmer TV (Germany-Regionalliga). It seemed like this was a step back. Why did you chose to come to a lower league in Germany?

I did take a step back I felt in my career but I think it was a very helpful move for my game. I really wanted to make an impression in the German league and I felt that was an Oppurtunity to get it done.

Did you already know some Americans that were playing in Germany that helped make the transition easier for you?

Yes, I had friends playing in Germany, Josten Crow of Crasheim in Pro A is one of my good friends, we actually grew up together and played each year in High School together. He told me it was a great country and the lifestyle was easy to adapt to.

Barmer TV had a poor season at 4-20 finishing last in the German Regionaliga west. Why was this season one to forget?

We had a tough season because we were not properly equipped for the league I feel. We didn’t have enough fire power to play against teams with multiple pro players. There were many teams with Ex-Pro A and Pro B players that had experience and when it came down to it, experience wins!

How difficult as a whole was it for you obviously having to shoulder the burden of always having to have big games for the team to have any chance of winning?

It was a challenging task but not to difficult. I love big moments and having to carry a load, the toughest part was getting my teammates to buy into it. They trusted me to take big shots but at times would lose sight of me. We would correct it in practice, but then teams would double team me so it was always something new.

Did it at times feel like you were a man playing with kids? Is it possible for a very talented player like yourself to develop further when the skill level isn´t as advanced?

Not to much, the players in that league played hard, every night they gave their best. For me I spent a lot of time in the gym this season. I didn’t want my game to decline, I told my self “Don’t let the situation determine who you are” so I went into the season with that mind set. Although the league was lower than I was use to I wanted to make it as tough on me as possible and it was!

What were the most important things you learned on and off the court that will help you to continue to further your career in Europe?

Being a professional. Being courteous and caring for your teammates, coaches, fans, and club. No matter where you are you always represent them. With good chemistry off the court, brings good chemistry on the court.

If you could describe yourself in a few sentences as to why you could help any team now how would you sell yourself?

I am the guy who’s going to make the team become a Family! I want every coach and manger to know that when I put on the uniform it means it’s part of me, all I’ve ever wanted in my career is a championship and that’s what I’m going for!

How does a normal workout day look like for Craig Blackmon look like in the summer on and off the court?

Well I wake up around 06:45 am eat breakfast, something light then I head to the gym for 8:30 with Coach Lucas. Usually many of the NBA players on their offseason or top draft prospects are in there so it’s an intense 2 hours. Then I ice down and have some lunch. We have a second session at 330 so I have to prepare for that. Then weights on my own, around 7pm. Get home relax and to bed to wake up and do it again the next day!

Where is a place where you would like to visit this summer where you have never been to before?

I want to take a vacation to the West coast! I’ve never been to Northern California so that would be nice.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

 Captain America

Thanks Craig for the chat.
