German Hoops did its 14th interview with the 6 time Euroleague Final 4 player and three time Euroleague winner before the Euroleague game in Bamberg.

Kyle thanks for talking to German Hoops. This is our 14th interview since you played in Moscow. In our first interview you were a non Euroleague winner. Now you have three Euroleague titles. Has time flown by since Bamberg?

When I first became a professional, I was aiming to play at least 10 years, and now when I look up it has been 10 years. It feels like yesterday when I was playing with Bamberg. I am a 8 year Euroleague veteran and the game is still so fun for me. I don´t feel like 31 and hope I can still play the game for a long time.

Since our last interview in June, almost six months have passed. You’re 31 years old. What was your main focus last summer on the court so that you would be best prepared for this upcoming season?

It mainly was small things. Just making sure my conditioning and stamina is correct. I only took one to two weeks off last summer, before getting back into the gym. I also looked for ways to work on being more dynamic around the basket and working on my free throws. Last season I had a hand injury and didn´t feel like I was in peak shape. I made sure that I came into this season being in peak shape.

Your playing now your fifth season with CSKA Moscow after playing two seasons in Greece, one in Germany and two in Italy. Some call Quantez Robertson a Skyliner lifer. Do you feel like your going in the direction of a CSKA Moscow lifer?

I hope so. I love the city, organization and fans. I have spent half my career in Moscow. It feels crazy. I hope that I will be here as long as possible and finish my career here.

A Fourth Consecutve BBL League Championship For Brose Bamberg Will Heave Andrea Trinchieri To Ultimate Basketball God Status

After last season´s final game at home where Brose Bamberg manhandled the EWE Baskets Oldenburg for a second time in the 2017 BBL finals sweep winning 76-58 and winning their third league title in a row, the big rugged Italian head coach Andrea Trinchieri who appears like an overgrown teddy bear that could pass easier for a sports fan getting lost on the sidelines of a basketball court instead of being one of the top coaches in Europe had many many thoughts buzzing through his head after the 40 minutes had elapsed. His biggest of course was just savoring the moment of having won the BBL title again and knowing that 9 months of very hard work had paid off, but there was probably something else roaming in his thoughts that he knew was something he couldn´t control in the upcoming months. He knew that the 12 incredible players that had worked hard for a whole season wouldn´t all be back in a few months to attempt to defend their title for a fourth time. When the Italian top coach returned in August to practice, he might have felt a little lonely at first since many old faces were missing as well as there were many new faces that were running up down the court wanting to prove early to the coaching wizard that their signing would pay dividends down the line. No longer was the athletic Daniel Theis around making crushing dunks as he was doing that now with the Boston Celtics, the amazing killer instinct and just superb guard play of Fabian Causeur was gone as he had escaped for the serious big bucks with Real Madrid and who could blame him, ex NBA player Darius Miller returned back to an old stomping ground with the New Orleans Pelicans as he had been there along the ride for the three league championships, the precise shooting accuracy and sniper qualities of Latvian guard Janis Strelnieks had taken him to Olympiacos in Greece while the Italian good looks and inside out play of Nicollo Melli had taken him to Fenerbahce in Turkey. After digesting these loses and then taking a closer glimpse of where they actually went to, being able to contend against the NBA and better, more lucrative and more prestigious Euroleague teams was as tough as trying to shape the ego of a Lebron James. One can´t blame the players for leaving as they were only doing only what any other player except maybe Ricky Paulding or Quantez Robertson would have done and that was to do what was best in their financial interest. Trinchieri continues to build his experience with Bamberg as before he came to Germany he won a cup with Prima Veroli (Lega2) in 2009, reached two cup finals in Italy and won a Russian cup with Unics Kazan in 2014. He has gained much respect from his basketball peers in Europe and especially in Italy is seen as a head coach that is always ready for duty. He has been described as a head coach that is always fully prepared for each game and gets 100% from his players. He is very charismatic and is always liked by all players. Trinchieri also was behind the bench leading Kyle Hines and Prima Veroli when the ex Bamberg player won his first title as a professional. Now the Italian is faced with his biggest challenge of winning a fourth BBL league championship with a potpourri of many new talented players like a Dorrell Wright, Ricky Hickman, Daniel Hacket, Luka Mitrovic and BBL veterans like a Bryce Taylor and Augustine Rubit having to integrate the most players that he has ever had to with Bamberg and construct another winning chemistry. If Trinchieri is capable of winning a fourth BBL title in a row then he will be heaved to ultimate Basketball God status in Bamberrg the way Paulding already is in Oldenburg. “I think that Bamberg has a great chance to repeat and win their fourth title because coach Trinchieri and the management has done a great job in creating a winning culture. When you sign for Bamberg the goals of the team are clear. You can see from the past teams and history that winning is a tradition and is expected. Trinchieri signed experienced players that understand what it takes to win and he has the ability to keep his players motivated through the entire season”, stressed three time Euroleague winner and current CSKA center Kyle Hines.

The 6 time Euroleague Final 4 player and three time Euroleague winner spoke to German Hoops back home in New Jersey.

Kyle thanks for talking to German Hoops Where are you at the moment and how has your summer been going?

I am home in New Jersey now. I just got home 2-3 days ago. We won the VTB league about a week ago and after I spent a few more days in Moscow enjoying the city before coming back home

Have you bumped into your ex coach Chris Fleming? The NBA Draft is tomorrow. Did he reveal any talk about the Nets signing the German boy Isaiah Hartenstein?

I have not had the chance to talk to him yet. I saw Hartenstein play before and he was on the roster of the team we played against twice last season. I have been aware of him and know Chris also since he and the Nets do a good job scouting teams in Europe. I think that with his kill set, he has the potential to be an NBA player. I think he is a big man that can do a lot on the floor which other big men his size can´t. He is more of a face the basket skilled big man. I think for him making it, it will depend a lot on how well he can make the transition from Europe to the NBA.

Congrats on another great season with CSKA Moscow. Despite winning your fourth VTB title, do you have a little sour taste because you didn´t win another Euroleague title?

Will The NBA Be Calling Johannes Voigtmann This Summer Or Does He Only Possess Euroleague Format?

Even if an exciting basketball game can be interrupted and made less nice by the constant blowing of whistles slowing down the game, so can a timeout where some patrons will scoot to the food stand to buy a Coke and nacho´s while other´s may even delay a bathroom run just to watch the entertaining sideline show of ex Alba Berlin head coach Sasa Obradovic who has his own Serbian theatre like skits with his hand and body gestures trying to motivate his squad back into the game, but the 2 time European basketball champion with the then Yugoslavia also has a knack of saying bold things. In the 2015-2016 season Obradovic who won the Korac Cup in 1995 with Alba Berlin as a player and has basketball legendary status from the Spree river to Potsdam is a guy who can talk and fill a press conference room and where journalists for once won´t interrupt, but just shut up and listen stated that ex Brose Bamberg guard Brad Wanamaker belongs to the top three best players to ever have played in the BBL. It would be interesting to how quickly he could come to a conclusion to which center is better the more experienced Elmeden Kikanovic or constantly developing and rising star Johannes Voigtmann of the then Fraport Skyliners. It would also be interesting to see how Obradovic would react to the question “Was Johannes Voigtmann the best player in the BBL in 2015-2016? In terms of play, the way Johannes Voigtmann was playing that season, he was becoming more and more of a showcase player in the BBL and a player that fans came specifically to see play. You may have seen Jason Boone as an extra in a Lebron James movie as he could easily moonlight as an actor or go into the field once his playing days are over and could even make a mean Jason or funny Jason on screen. However where he doesn´t joke is when it comes to basketball as he is all business on and off the court and on December 15th, 2015, he had the audacity to tell me at half time of a Fiba Europe Cup game in Frankfurt against Sodertalje that Johannes Voigtmann was the best player in the German BBL. Even the ex floor general of the Fraport Skyliners Jordan Theodore was very impressed about his ex teammate: “To me Jo has been playing at a high level all season. Definitely the best center in the league. Big Jo is definitely one of the best players in this league. He does it all”, warned Jordan Theodore. In 2015-2016, it is so much fun watching the blue eyed basketball monster as at times it seemed like he was a younger version of Larry Bird wooing fans with his special knack of passing the ball, but in reality it is just Johannes Voigtmann being the most complete center in the BBL. “Joe is very skilled. He has a high IQ and can do things with the basketball that I haven’t seen from guys his size. He can put the ball on the floor and create for others. He can shoot the long ball and his mid range game is unstoppable”, stressed ex Seton Hall guard Jordan Theodore. But before we talk about the current play of the German national player, let´s look back to 2012 when he first arrived in Frankfurt.

Voigtmann is a 24 year old 211cm center born on September 20th and hails from Eisenach, Germany and played four seasons with the Fraport Skyliners. Before coming to Frankfurt, the German big man started his basketball trade in the former East Germany and didn´t start until he was 15 years old.

Congrats Kyle on winning the 2016 Euroleague final 101-96 in OT against Fenerbahce Istanbul!!!Was winning this title one of the most difficult in your career?

My third Euroleague Title was definitely one of the toughest titles I have won in my career. Especially after all the disappointment CSKA Moscow went through the last two seasons with losing in the Final 4. To bounce back after that and finally win again and rewrite the history books was a great feeling.

What were you personally going through in your mind in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter where a seemingly sure win was dwindling away?

There was a lot of anxiety going through my mind. We were thinking and focusing on what we could do to just win the game. We were discouraged having lost the big lead and just wanted to do enough to get the win. We made some big plays that got us to the OT. That gave us a second life and at that point we were very confident that we could pull out the win.

Kyle thanks for talking to German Hoops. You are back in Berlin again this time for the Euroleague final 4.The last time you were here in spring time was 5 years ago in June playing in the BBL finals against Alba Berlin. How big was the weather contrast coming from Moscow to Berlin?

There really wasn´t any transition in the weather coming from Moscow to Berlin. The last couple days were nice in Moscow around 20c.

The Brose Baskets Bamberg always took the lead in games, but Alba Berlin never gave up forcing a fifth game. What do you remember most from that hard fought 5 game series?

I remember game 5 well. We were down in the closing minutes, but got a big three from Reyshawn Terry and then John Goldsberry hit a huge three pointer that sealed the win for us. It was a special win considering the big rivalry between both teams.

Kyle welcome back to Germany and Bamberg. With all the horrible terrorist attacks in the past and recently in Brussels, how do you cope with all the travel you do with CSKA Moscow and having that in your mind every time you step on to a plane and walk through airports?

It has been a very tough situation in the last week with the terror attacks in Istanbul and Brussels. I send out my prayers and blessings to all the victims and families involved. We live in a time now where we all have to be more on the look out and have to worry a little more about these things. But you can´t do more than just put life in God´s hands and hope for the best.

Romeo thanks for talking to German Hoops This season you are playing for Strasbourg IG (France-ProA) and as close to Germany as never before. How many times have you ever been in Germany since landing in Strassburg? Have you had any day trips to Germany on a day off?

No I haven’t had the time to make it to Germany yet. On my days off I usually just relax and rest playing twice a week is difficult with the travel and high level competition.

In the last three seasons Strasburg have gone from a middle of the standings kind of team to a top team and have reached the France pro A final three years in a row. How much of an urgency do you feel is there to finally win that second league title after 2005?

This team  has all the tools for a championship run. I don’t think there’s pressure more of just high expectations
