Will Barnes(My Hard Work And Professional Mindset Is Contagious And I Don’t Want To Be Just Average But Aim To Be An Elite Player That Wins Games)

Will Barnes is a 27 year old 185cm point guard from Tuscaloosa, Alabama that recently completed his second professional season and first with the Hamburg Towers. With Hamburg he played 28 games averaging 13.8ppg, 3.1rpg, 2.5apg, 1.2spg, FGP: 50.3%, 3PT: 28.8%, FT: 77.1% He started his basketball career in 2006 for Tennessee Tech (NCAA) where he played a total of 98 NCAA games. Last season as a rookie he played for the Finke Baskets playing 29 games: Score-3(18.8ppg), 3.5rpg, 3.4apg, FGP: 64.3%, 3PT: 37.2%, FT: 75.8%. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.

Will thanks for talking to German Hoops. Where are you at the moment and how has your summer has been?

Hello Miles, it’s always a pleasure getting to talk to you! At the moment I am in Indianapolis, Indiana, training with Anthony Young and Qdar Owens. They’re two good friends of mine that have pro experience. The level of basketball in this city and state is elite. I’ve been playing against great pros (overseas & NBA) to prepare myself for the upcoming season.

You stayed in Germany an extra month to get fit again. How difficult was your injury that you had last season and did it effect you a bit mentally?

Yes, I worked with a trainer and friend, Melvin Wiredu. He did a great job helping me get my knee back fit at a very fast pace. He helped me strengthen the deep muscles that help prevent further injury and increase my overall physical health. A lot of the credit goes to the job he did helping me! But the injury was difficult mentally mainly because of the timing. I hurt it the last game of the regular season with the Hamburg Towers which kept me out of the playoffs. I worked super hard during the season and offseason for that exact moment, the playoffs. I was still able to be a mental help to my team. But for a competitor like myself, it just wasn’t the same.

The most important question now is are you 100% again? What makes you most happy now with your body on the court that you are able to function again like a complete basketball player?

Yes, I am 100% fit. The work I put in with Melvin Wiredu combined with the daily routine he advised for to continue with through the summer has me completely fit and ready to play. I have always been a hard worker, but I worked even harder this summer. My body and skills have been taken to the next level. I was blessed with great facilities to use on an everyday basis, great training with professionals, and also very encouraging words and advice from my family and close friends. They all saw the difference on how focused I was on this upcoming season. I have the burn in my heart to explode again like I did my rookie season.

You are a point guard that had to play more shooting guard last season. What strides do you feel you made having played more the shooting guard position last year?

Yes, last year was definitely an adjustment having to play off of the ball so much. I did some facilitating and ball handling, but it was almost strictly through set pick and rolls. I am very effective in the open court and fast breaks also. I often found myself filling in the gaps instead of leading these breaks last season. But with that said, I definitely improved overall. I improved tremendously moving without the ball. My coach was on me constantly throughout the season about always moving. I was most of the time a heavy focus for the opponent’s defense so I had to work extra hard to get easy buckets. I gained the knowledge of how to make good cuts, moving off of penetration, and spacing out the floor while the ball is in the post. My pick and roll game improved tremendously also. I played with some great point guards last season and was able to pick up how they utilized every player as opposed to just focusing on the roller and scoring from the P&R. My team and 1 on 1 defense was the biggest improvement though. Coach Hamed was dedicated to helping me become a better defender. Especially on P&R’s. We constantly watched film together to pick out details and mistakes. This helped my understanding tremendously.

It is the beginning of August and you are still available. Are you getting a bit uneasy that you haven´t found the security yet of having a team for your third professional season?

Yes, I have found myself getting very anxious and uneasy. Especially considering the solid seasons I played in Germany for my first 2 years professionally. But nevertheless, I haven’t let it effect my work ethic and confidence in myself. I continue to work hard, pray, and keep the confidence I’ve had throughout my career. I have no doubts at all that whoever decides to sign me will be thrilled with their decision. Having to wait longer just makes me even hungrier to perform at an elite level this season!

You had two solid seasons with Paderborn and Hamburg and should be on a team for the next season. Do you believe that your injury woes last season might have scared off some teams?

Yes, I do believe this played a part. But if coaches & GM’s do the research, they will find out that last year was the first time I’ve had to miss games due to injury. I’ve always been complimented on being an “iron man” and being available to play a role throughout an entire season. The injuries last season were minor also. I never did any structural damage do any part of my body that required surgery or an operation of any kind. In a couple cases, I sat out in particular games because of the understanding Coach Hamed and I had. We constantly communicated and he would recommend that I rest my body and just focus on the next opponent. And as far as my knee injury, it wasn’t nearly as severe as people may have perceived. Within 3 weeks, I was back in the gym participating in workouts with my trainer. I don’t have a background of being an injury prone type player. Last season was just the worst I’ve had in my career so far. But with these experiences, I’ve gained more knowledge of the importance of physical therapy, rest, how to train in the weight room properly, and also how to utilize exercises that can be performed at home.

There has been interest from some German pro A teams, but in the end you were always on the short list. Were your experiences in Paderborn and Hamburg worthwhile that you would like to continue your career here?

Yes of course, I would love to return to the German Pro A league. The quality of basketball in this league is very high and is only getting better year by year. I proved that I am a top guard in the league in my first two seasons, no matter who I play against and who else is in the league. I noticed even more last season with the respect and preparation I received from defenses. I know that I have a high impact on the games I play in. Last season, I developed even more ways to be effective than before, and I am always looking to improve even more.

SC Rasta Vechta is still looking for a point guard and there have been rumors that a Carlos Medlock is in talks. What memories do you have from the games with Vechta last season? You had 23 and 13 point games. Is this a place where you could imagine playing for?

Yes, Rasta Vechta was a great & exciting club to play against. Their fans were very supportive of them and extremely loud! I have much respect for their players and club. I played very well against them last season, especially at home. The games against Vechta are actually the two that stick out the most because of the incredible intensity and fan support! It was amazing and reminded me of rivalry games I’ve played in back in college and high school! If the opportunity presented itself, I would without a doubt love to play my heart out for them. They are a proven club that has been very successful over the years; and I’ve heard nothing but great things about the club from players and coaches that I have talked to.

The basketball world is vast and so many countries to play. Would you be able to adapt to another style of play if you had for example have to play in South America or Asia?

Yes, I know that I could be just as effective if not more in other countries and markets. My game is very versatile and I pride myself on being efficient and very skillful. This is why I work as hard as I do on a day to day basis!

Please describe your game in a few sentences as to why you could help any team right now in the next season?

Well to add to the last question, my game is very versatile and skillful. My strongest asset is my ability to attack the basket and put pressure on the defense. Last season, I was able to develop this ability even more through a complex system with rules. I can be a threat off of screens, through pick and rolls, or break my man down one on one. I am also a consistent 3 point shooter. Even having to play through a broken finger last season, I feel I shot the ball well more often than not. The injury effected my shot but I managed. I also bring a fearless attitude. No matter how great the opponent, I am always coming with my best shot and I compete at a very high level. I also bring leadership. Last season I was captain of a first year club that had no expectations in the league. We proved to be a real threat in the German Pro A and made the playoffs in very first season of the club. I wasn’t just given this title either; our players and coaches voted on it. I’ve also noticed that my hard work and professional mindset is contagious. When it comes to getting a good workout before practice, getting up shots, doing yoga, or taking stretching serious. It always spreads to some of my teammates.

How does a normal work out day look like for you in the summer of 2015 on the court?

Well, in the morning I always lift first and get a ball handling workout in. I’m very obsessive of having a strict schedule and sticking to it. I plan weeks at a time and focus on what to develop. I later get in the gym and do numerous drills and skill work. I always have friends that love to get in the gym with me to pick up what exactly I do. I love this feeling because it lets me know that people not only notice, but they also see that it works! Hard work is the only way to separate yourself from the pack. I don’t want to be just average, I aim to be an elite player that wins games. Winning is the goal that I have at the top of my list because I see how players are rewarded that consistently win championships.

What is the state of Lebron James in 2015? Will he ever be mentioned in the same breath as a Michael Jordan?

Lebon James is great man. No other way to put it. What he did in the 2015 playoffs was amazing. I’m not his biggest fan but one would have to be blind not to notice the incredible impact he has on the game. I don’t think he will surpass MJ’s greatness, but he is this eras Jordan rather one wants to admit it or not. What I respect about him most is the media labeled him a superstar in middle school. And instead of letting the hype go to his head, he worked hard to become everything that people that was capable of.

What was the last movie that you saw?

The last movie I saw was Jurassic World. Great movie!

Thanks Will for the chat.

After a very strong season with BK 04 AC LB Spisska Nova Ves (Slovakia-SBL), how did you experience the summer transfer time? I am sure it was easier than a year ago after your rookie season in Mexico?

It felt a lot more confident in finding a second job this summer. Definitely easier than my transfer time after Mexico.

The Fraport Skyliners Draw Interesting Opponents In New International Fiba Tournament

The Fraport Skyliners still are without a point guard and shooting guard for the upcoming season, but had something totally different on the agenda today as it was time for the draw of the new Fiba international club championship for the 2015-2016 season which one could also classify as Eurochallenge 2,0. After being idle from international club play between 2012-2014, the club returned with a bang last season and reached the Eurochallenge final four coming in fourth place. Today the Fraport Skyliners were in attendance in Munich for the draw with ex player Marius Nolte representing the 2004 BBL champion as the team drew strong and interesting teams.

The tournament is slated to start on October 28th. The teams will be geographically placed in two conferences which also takes into account the number of participating teams from each nation. Each conference will consist of seven groups of four clubs each. Each club will play the remaining three in their group in a home-and-away format with the top two teams from each group, along with the four best-placed third place teams advancing to the Round of 32.The Round of 32 will follow the same format as the Regular Season, with the two best-placed clubs from each group advancing to the Last 16 Play-Offs.The tournament Final Four is set to take place from 29 April to 1 May 2016.

It always depend on does a club want the best possible opponents with the risk of not advancing or the lesser talented teams with the better chance of moving forward. I am sure a Gordon Herbert, the head coach of the Fraport Skyliners would seek the best possible teams. The Fraport Skyliners didn´t get top teams like Asvel, Chalon or Le Havre of France or top Czech team Nymburk, but settled for an interesting mix with teams KK KRKA Novo Mesto of Slovenia, ZZ Leiden of Holland and FC do Porto of Portugal

When looking more closely at the teams of the Fraport Skyliners, they will face KK KRKA Novo Mesto of Slovenia that plays in the competitive Adriatic league and last season finished in ninth place with a record of 12-14. In this league they duel against top teams like Red Star Belgrad and Partizan Belgrad. The club has won the Slovenian league seven times, the cup twice and Super cup three times. They also reached the Uleb Cup final in 2003 losing to Pamesia Valenicia. They played Euroleague in 2002 and 2004. The Fraport Skyliners will also duel against Dutch team Leiden that finished last season in second place in the Dutch league behind Den Bosch who Frankfurt beat twice in Eurochallenge play. They were promoted to the first league in 2006 and since then won the league title twice in 2011 and 2013 and won two cups in 2010 and 2012. They have played Eurochallenge three times. In the past years ex Beko BBL players like Seamus Boxley of Giessen and Danny Gibson of Bayreuth have played for Leiden. The last team of the group is FC Porto of Portugal with the most tradition that was founded in 1926 and has won 11 league titles and 12 cups. In international play have played Euroleague, Korac and Saporta cup in the past and last played Fiba Champions League in 2003. The club last won the league title in 2011 and withdrew from the first division LPB in 2012 and played in the second division Proliga the last two seasons and will play LPB again this season. Notable players that have played for FC Porto that played in the Beko BBL were Chris Ensminger of Bamberg, Jeremy Hunt of Bonn, Christian Burns of ratiopharm ulm or Carlos Andrade of the then Deutsche Bank Skyliners. This is a very interesting group where a sleeper could easily develop between the four teams. The Fraport Skyliners should be seen as the favorite and advancing will be an obligation. With a core of the Frankfurt twin towers Danilo Barthel and Johannes Voigtmann, defense specialist and freak athlete Quantez Robertson and 2015 silver medalist at the Pan American games with Aaron Doornekamp, I see none of the other teams boasting such a strong leading quintet. How far the Fraport Skyliners come depends on how well the new point guard and shooting guard mesh in the first two months of the season. Bringing back the old duo and making a reunion of Dashaun Wood and Jimmy Mckinney would be like visiting a candy store for even some older Skyliner fans, but Gordon Herbert will most likely base his trust on two NCAA rookies like he did on Justin Cobbs and Sean Armand last season. If the two new players can make an impact as rookies like Cobbs and Armand will be the question.

Ricky Kreklow (Bayer Giants Leverkusen) I Only Worry About What Is Within Your Control And To Always Seek To Make A Positive Influence On The Lives And Situations Around You

Brandon Johnson(Crailsheim Merlins) I’m Looking At My Teammates Tendencies Their Strengths And Weaknesses Making Them Better Makes The Game Easier For Me

Brandon Johnson is a 28 year old 183cm guard from Houston, Texas that signed with German BBL team Crailsheim Merlins. He started his basketball career at San Diego(NCAA) in 2005 and played there until 2010 playing a total of 134 NCAA games and as a senior played 29 games averaging 14.0ppg, 2.7rpg, 3.4apg, 1.9spg, FGP: 35.4%, 3PT: 32.2%, FT: 77.9%. He turned professional in 2010 and played for the Dakota Wizards (D-League) playing 24 games: 6.3ppg, 2.1rpg, 2.2apg, FGP: 41.0%, 3PT: 20.8%, FT: 82.2%. Two seasons ago he played for Hoops Club (Lebanon-Division A) playing 5 games: 17.2ppg, 5.4rpg, 6.6apg, 2.4spg, FGP: 32.6%, 3PT: 25.5%, FT: 64.5%. Last season he finally made his big breakthrough in Europe with the t Cuxhaven BasCats (Germany-ProA) coming in the second half of the season and saving their year and played 12 games averaging 21.9ppg, 4.8rpg, 5.6apg, 2.8spg, FGP: 50.0%, 3PT: 44.6%, FT: 70.3%. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.

Brandon thanks for talking to German Hoops. Where are you at the moment and how has your summer been?

I’m currently in Houston my summer was amazing after Germany I went out to Dominican Republic then came back home to Houston spent some time with the family then hit the road for some national tournaments out in Chicago and recently just flew back in from China. So a lot of basketball this summer from a competing standpoint I usually do more individual training”

Congrats on signing with the Crailsheim Merlins. I don’t know if you are superstitious, but some players tend to be, but with your luck in the last 9 months does it feel like the letter C has been a good letter for you since Cuxhaven and Crailsheim have this fine letter?

I guess you right because Christ has truly been amazing in my journey

The Cinderella story continues for you. After 3 years of trying to revamp your professional career, you made your break out with Cuxhaven and now have moved up to the best level in Germany BBL. Is it strange for you that your professional career didn´t really get started until the age of 28 with Cuxhaven?

I wouldn’t say strange other players maybe strange but mine has a understanding. By that I mean with the case and everything that was against me I was incapable to truly start my career

You credit a lot to God for your recent success, but please explain how you have been able to really come out of nowhere and have an amazing season in the German Pro A with Cuxhaven?

I think it had a lot to do with the timing when I went to Cuxhaven what I mean by timing is I had just finished the entire process from my case that was a huge lift off my shoulders to finally be able to play the game I love freely.

You stated in our interview earlier in the year that you weren´t the savior of the Cuxhaven Bascats, but that you brought unique characteristics to the team. What was the most unique characteristic that you brought to the table last season? Possibly your leadership which seemed to be missing at the time when you came?

My ability to lead was key in helping us become a better team but I have to give credit to my teammates it’s not often a team embrace a player on the first day and they understood what was missing and accepted it they wanted to win just as bad as I did. Coach Moris was strategic as he took over the head coaching job he did a great job in finding the pieces the team needed

You played only 12 games, but if the Pro A only had had 12 games you would have been player of the year since you averaged 21.9ppg, 4.8rpg, 5.6apg, 2.8spg, FGP: 50.0%, 3PT: 44.6%, FT: 70.3%. This was your first full season in Europe. What was your secret to adjusting so well to the style of the Pro A where you dominated?

Watching film is key for me I love to study the games after we play I’m not only watching me I’m looking at my teammates tendencies their strengths and weaknesses making them better makes the game easier for me

When you look back at the last three years, the prison time, lost contracts to what you have achieved in 2015 with Cuxhaven and now signing with Crailsheim, how confident were you coming to Cuxhaven that you could make an impact despite having had so much misfortune pretty much since you turned professional in 2010?

Me personally I believe in my talents and what I can do far as the game of basketball but to take a team from a struggling situation to being a more respected team by the end of the year was something I couldn’t predict the turn around with the team was so fast. With all the adversity not playing a full year in so long a lot of it was a shock

It continues to be a period of proving yourself as now you have made the next jump to Crailsheim. After your stellar time at Cuxhaven, did you see yourself having more and better offers this summer?

I truly just leave it all up to God I don’t really worry to much about job opportunities all I can do is sell my product and hope they buy. I did feel more confident and relaxed this summer after that season laying a solid foundation last year.

Crailsheim was one of the weaker teams last season in the BBL and only are able to play BBL this season because TBB Trier folded. What were the main reasons for going to the Crailsheim Merlins?

They reached out to me very early in the offseason stage one of my main things this summer was to sign early and get it out the way so I can just focus on training and preparing for the upcoming season. Coach explained the plan for next season and what he wanted to do the system he wants to run two guard back which I am familiar with throughout college I thought it would be an easy transition for me

The Beko BBL is faster and has better players than the Pro A. How confident are you that you won´t only succeed, but also be an impact player in the best league in Germany?

I’m not sure how I will do but I think that’s the best thing about sports is there so unpredictable.

Coach Ingo Enskat stated that your biggest challenge will be creating for a balanced team while still bringing your strengths to the team. What are you most looking forward to presenting the audience in the Beko BBL?

In general when I’m done with the game of basketball I want people to say he always left it all out on the floor Win or lose but if I had to be specific I want to impose my personality on them having fun with the game

You will be forming a guard duo with Jordan Callahan who played at Tulane and the last two seasons in Poland and Belgium. How excited are you be playing with him and challenging each other in practice every single day?

I’m very excited did some research on him love his game always great to compete at a high level in practice prepares you better for the games and just really as a player getting better is key

You stress how important God has been in your life. Where would Brandon Johnson be today without God?

Not even close to where I am now the strength I get from the word of God is indescribable my journey is very unique without basketball being the topic I’ve been through so much to accomplish the things I have I know he’s really a lot of times I couldn’t even think of a way to keep going but God is good

The Cuxhaven Bascats suffered a severe blow and this season have a new formed club and will play in the Regionaliga. Do you believe that the Cuxhaven basketball program will fight their way back to a higher league?

I watch coach Moris last year with Cuxhaven the man did hard work and dedication is contagious if he’s the head coach I got faith they will be back in a top league in no time

What do you see the Dallas Mavericks accomplishing this season in the NBA? With anew point guard Deron Williams and an aging Dirk Nowitzki is there a run possible?

I think this in a rebuilding stage they have some good pieces but not enough to get it done next season.

What is the state of Lebron James in 2015? Do you ever see him being mentioned in the same breath as Michael Jordan?

I actually think Lebron James is the best ever. We will never see another human being with his talents we should appreciate it while we can

What was the last movie that you saw?

Jurassic Park goof movie but great in 3D.

Thanks Brandon for the chat.

Tre Bowman(ETB Wohnbau Baskets) I Aspire To Be The Best Basketball Player I Can Be On A Daily Basis And I Know My Work Ethic Will Help Me Attain My Dreams

Tre Bowman is a 23 year old 196cm guard from York, Pennsylvania that will be playing his second professional season and first in Germany with the ETB Wohnbau baskets Essen. Last season as a rookie he played for Zornotza Saskibaloi Taldea (Spain-LEB Silver): 26 games: Score-3(16.0ppg), 3.5rpg, 1.5apg, 1.3spg, FGP: 52.0%, 3PT: 30.8%, FT: 82.4%. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.

Congrats on signing with German Pro A team ETB Wohnbau Baskets Essen. As a rookie you played for Zornotza Saskibaloi Taldea (Spain-LEB Silver). Were you ever able to pronounce your Spanish team correctly last season?

Yes, I learned very quickly how to pronounce Zornotza Saskibaloi Taldea. Zornotza Saskibaloi Taldea is a wonderful organization. I learned how to pronounce their name before I arrived; I was really excited about the opportunity, and beginning my professional career.

You come from the third league to the second league in Germany. What were the main reasons on signing with the ETB Wohnbau Baskets Essen?Have you been able to talk with ETB Wohnbau Baskets head coach Igor Krizanovic? What was your first impression of him and how vital do you see your scoring ability to be?

During the offseason my main goal was to play for a team where I could continue to learn, and contribute. After speaking with Coach Krizanovic, and researching the teams winning tradition I quickly realized I wanted to be a part of it.I thought it would be fantastic to be in another environment where I could just focus on playing basketball, and be a part of a team that had an expectation of wining. Coach Krizanovic really seems like a Coach that will really teach me a lot, and will create a environment for me to continue to develop. I think if I can continue to work hard I can play a significant role on the team, and really help the team win games.

The German Pro A is very competitive and seems to be getting better and better and the Spanish Silver league isn´t too shabby either. How confident do you feel that you can be a game changer in the German pro A?

Pro A is a great league, I’m really looking forward to giving my best every game- I know good things happen when I do my best.

Three great attributes to your game is your shooting, athleticism and work ethic. What else do you bring to the table that will help the ETB Wohnbau Baskets be successful this season?

I appreciate your critique. I really don’t feel like I have peaked in any category yet. With the exception of my work ethic, every category you mentioned I still work on every day during the summer. I feel my ball handling, and passing is really something I worked on often in Spain. I was able to utilize this by bringing the ball up at times and getting our team into sets. I will do anything to help contribute to the team winning, so I will bring any and everything I have to the table.

What is a hidden strength in your game that doesn´t always get noticed on the court? Is your defense and free throw shooting at times overlooked?

It’s really hard for me to honestly say what parts of my game go unnoticed; I’m not really a guy that focuses on what other people think of my game if it isn’t a coach making a suggestion. I really focus on parts of my game that give my team the best chance of winning. Free throw shooting and defense are really emphasized in the Spain basketball system, I believe my coaches constantly pushing me to improve these aspects were very valuable in my development.

What was your wake up call to being a rookie in Spain last season where you knew you were very far away from home in York or New York city?

That is a great question, and I really felt I was aware of my settings from the very first day I walked off the plane. Spain is very different from New York, but I quickly adapted; I learned to appreciate the cultural aspects in Spain very quickly. It’s a wonderful country!

Where does your buzzer beater against FC Barcelona 2 rank in your biggest shots in your career?

That was an exciting game for my teammates and I. That game was fun because we opened up the season wining 5 of 6 games. I was really happy we won that game because we won the next game too, which made three in a row. I would definitely place that as one of my top shots.

Did you ever kid your friends at home saying you hit a buzzer beater against one of the top teams in the world with FC Barcelona however not mentioning it was their second team? Lol

Hahaha. Well I actually never got the opportunity to mention it. Most of my friends play professionally as well, so we usually battle each other on the court and rarely speak about the season. I can tell when my friends have a good season by the way they play when they return home. I hope they could see the improvements in my game as well.

You started your college career at Penn State in 2010. Was this always the plan to go to school in your own home state? Why was your freshman season there nothing like what you expected it to? Did you and head coach Pat Chambers not see eye to eye?

I thought Coach Chambers was a fair coach, it’s very difficult at that age to really find a program that will evolve with your game because you are still growing as a player and person. I loved being close to family and friends; I was very young when I attended Penn State. I think at that stage of my life being close to home was a good thing. I don’t have anything negative to say about Coach Chambers, I appreciated Penn State for bringing me into their system, and I’m happy I was able to briefly compete in my home state.

Penn State had talented players like Jeff Brooks and Talor Battle who has played in Germany in the Beko BBL. You then played at Midland JC in the 2011-2012 season. How important was this season for restarting your college career and moving on to Iona?

I think Penn State did a great job recruiting talented guys. I enjoyed competing against them, and I’m sure it helped my game. Midland was a good opportunity for me, and I learned lots from their coaching staff. Again, I’m very grateful they gave me an opportunity, and everyone truly helped me develop. Iona is just filled with coaches that love the game of basketball; everyone is a classy professional there. Iona has a very rich tradition of producing good players. There is no doubt that they helped mold and put me on a path to succeed.

You had a stellar two year career at Iona(NCAA). You won the MAAC tournament in 2013, but did the 2014 final appearance somewhat taint your career in the end? How much did it hurt not ending your career with the win?

It still stings to this day. There is an expectation of wining every game at Iona. I feel like I learned from that loss, and do everything in my power now not to have that feeling of disappointment again. That game still inspires me to this day.

Did the fact that you were in the shadow of Sean Armand and AJ English help your game putting the pressure off you a bit?

I know we were able to feed off of each other’s energy on a daily basis at Iona, I enjoyed competing against the two of them in practice. I also enjoyed going to war with them in games. Everyone on the team played a role and we all held each other accountable, so we were all under pressure to live up to the coaching staff’s expectations, and our own expectations for each other. The pressure was always on, but we embraced it by wining a championship together.

Sean Armand had a great rookie season with the Fraport Skyliners and now will play his second season in Turkey. What are your fondest memories with him and what could you learn from him on and off the court?

I’m very excited for Sean, and I know he deserves his success because I watched him work very hard. I believe my most memorable moments with him and the team are the moments we shared before the ball was tipped every game. I could see the expectation of wining every game in his eyes, and I know that is something we all have taken with us at the professional level.

Who would win a one on one in practice you or Sean Armand?

ME!! haha it would be a great competition though.

How did Tim Cluess prepare and groom you best for a professional basketball career?

I loved Coach Cluess. He is really a remarkable guy. The entire coaching staff at Iona including Assistant Coach Grasso- are really wonderful people. Coach Cluess really influenced my game and my person, I will always be grateful for the lessons he taught me, and the way he embraced me. I love them all.

You had a workout with the Houston Rockets in 2014 where Arizona player Nick Johnson was also present. Are you a bit sad that the NBA didn´t happen for you? Do you still dream about this happening?

I don’t really look at it a rejection. That experience just gave me a glimpse of what the next level will be like. I aspire to be the best basketball player I can be on a daily basis, I know my work ethic will help me attain my dreams. However, my goal is just to improve on a daily basis.

How vital has your trainer Andre Oupoh been for you? Where would you be physically now if he wasn´t guiding you?

Andre is a great guy, I really enjoyed working out with him last summer. He really pushed my conditioning, and that helped me going into my rookie season.

How does a summer workout plan look like for you on and off the court in 2015?

Oh currently I train about three times a day. But on days I have pro-am I typically get the weight room in during the morning, and skill-development in the afternoon. The actual pro-am game is my night cap.

What is the state of Lebron James in 2015? Do you feel like he will ever be mentioned in the same breath as Michael Jordan?

Lebron is absolutely one of the greatest players I have seen. I was inspired by his effort in the first few games of the finals.

What was the last movie that you saw?

To be honest I haven’t watched a movie in years, I really can’t remember the last one I have seen. Training eats up most of my time, and during our down time we are usually going through film. During the summer I enjoy watching old film of players; my father has a vast collection of great players on tape. This summer I really enjoyed studying some of Oscar Schmidt a prolific European scorer, and also my favorite D Wade. As a perimeter player I really can learn a lot from their shot selection, and flawless techniques.

Thanks Tre for the chat.

Kashaune Mckinney(Robert Morris) I Like Proving Myself And That’s The Only Thing I Know Until I Get To Where I Want To Be

Kashaune Mckinney is a 23 year old 193cm guard from Chicago that recently as a rookie played for the Southers Illinois Monarchs (ABA). He played at three colleges starting with Connors State JC (JUCO), Gillette College (JUCO) and finished at Robert Morris where he played a total of 64 games and as a senior played 36 games averaging 13.4ppg, 3.1rpg, 2.0apg, 1.6spg, FGP: 41.1%, 3PT: 31.9%, FT: 73.2%. He also took part at the Oklahoma City Thunder (Eurobasket Summer League in Portsmouth) playing 3 games averaging 17.3ppg, 2.0rpg, 2.0apg, 1.3spg. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.

Thanks Kashaune for talking to German Hoops. Where are you at the moment and how has your summer been?

I’m in Chicago as of right now working out every day and networking I currently play in the chi league been to Vegas this year for the McNeil camp and then came back to play In the tbt

Officially you are not a rookie as you played last season for the Southers Illinois Monarchs (ABA). How much are you itching to start a professional basketball career in Europe like your ex teammate Diante Watkins?

I’m itching to play so bad I’m anxious and I’m more than ready I can’t wait till the first team gives me a chance

Germany would be a perfect place to play for you? What do you know about the country Germany and its basketball?

I know Germany is a good place to start off my career they have a lot of teams that I know that would love to have me if they knew me and my style of play

Do you have any friends playing in Germany besides Diante Watkins?

I have friends and family in Germany Rilwan Bakaree is one of my good friends

It is August now and teams in Europe are getting filled up for the upcoming season. What kind of an experience has it been for you in general testing the European market. Has there been interest and any offers since you came out of Robert Morris?

No just a lot of scams going on and etc I really don’t like that it’s discouraging but I was built for this. I spent a lot of my time went to Vegas twice. Last year won the gbsl no looks scored 45 at the Bridgewater camp no looks

What kind of experience was it playing last season for the Southers Illinois Monarchs (ABA)? What did you get out of this season besides the fact that you were close to home and family and friends could come out and see you play?

That the shot clock was different long quarters and I played with a smaller basketball. I also tried to play with Chicago steam they tried scamming me as well.

You played for three schools in four years with Connors State JC (JUCO), Gillette College (JUCO) and Robert Morris(NAIA). What was the most challenging thing in your college career that you never would have had just playing for one school?

To get over the fact I blew my chance to go to the university of Detroit mercy out of Gillette so I got over it and put all my energy into Robert Morris left there with a final 4 appearance and a degree in applied health science.

After two years in junior college, you made the jump to Robert Morris(NAIA) as a junior where you played two seasons. How difficult has it been accepting and dealing with the fact that you pretty much always had to prove yourself and play at lower college levels when you knew that you could of played at a higher level?

I like proving myself that’s the only thing I know until I get to where I want to be its challenging but I love it and it makes me a better player

The best example of great talent playing at a lower level was your ex teammate Diante Watkins who averaged 24ppg and 7,0apg as a senior. He came to Germany played two seasons in the third division and now will play in the second division for Leverkusen. Does a guy like Watkins make you want to keep working even harder to achieve success the way he did, because it is possible coming from a NAIA school?

Yes he showed me anything is possible after winning player of the year out of Robert Morris at 5’5

What was your sweetest memory with Diante Watkins on and off the court?

My sweetest memory is when Diante Watkins came into practice and ran a drill with us my junior season and I was guarding him. Another memory is when he found out I dropped 38 he came into the coaches office and watched the tape and told me to keep working and told me you have a nice game. Off the court me n Diante played at the chi league on the same team. He always came to hang out in my dorm so he can get ready to go to Germany after he came back from the okc workout. His accomplishments led me on to think anything is possibly especially him being 5’5 and I’m 6’4

In your senior year you helped lead Robert Morris to the NAIA final four. However Robert Morris lost to Midland university. What will always stand out most from this game that you will never forget?

That we weren´t deep enough and that we should of played some zone instead of man to man full court and they shot like 70 percent from 3 and you can’t beat any team that’s shooting like that for instance like golden state.

Would you rank your 38 points against Valpariso as your best game ever at any level?

Yes that’s the best performance I had in my career that game I was just trying to be seen and let scouts know I can play any where at any level if I had a chance

In the game against Valpariso you led all scorers with 38 points, but Robert Morris lost 90-82 and Lavone Dority led the opponent with 18 points to the win. Last season as a rookie Dority played in Germany for Kichheim in the second division while you were in the ABA. Is this another motivation for you to work harder because you know that you can play at that level?

Yes it is a motivation because I know for a fact he can’t guard me. We were just two individuals in two different situation. If I had went to Valpariso I know for a fact I would have got a shot at the NBA.

How did Al Bruehl prepare and groom you best for a professional basketball career?

Every day in practice I went hard and came in first in all the sprints. Othyus Jeffers went to the NBA out of Robert Morris and many guys came out of there and played professionally and that just motivated me because I know I can play professionally if not the NBA definitely overseas.

If you could describe yourself in a few sentences as to why you could help any team now how would you describe your game best?

My name is Kashaune McKinney. I am a 6’4 athletic combo guard that has a defensive mind set. I assist my team by getting loose balls, setting screens, and being vocal on the floor. I have the ability to spread the defense on offense and knock down the mid-range jumper with consistency.

Who won a one on one at Robert Morris you or Diante Watkins?

Me and Diante haven’t played but believe me that would be a good show if we were to ever play.

How does a normal workout day look like for you in the summer of 2015?

I start my workout at 10am until 2pm soon as I getto the gym I stretch then I do some form shooting for like 20 minutes with a partner. Then I start my work out dribbling and shooting then after each drill I got to make 5 consecutive lay ups while fatigue then make two free throws. So I can move on to the next spot of drill. After that if there’s enough guys in the gym we play 4 on 4 on 4 We play to 5. You gotta get a bucket and stop that’s 1. Soon as you hit game you shoot a free throw to validate it. But if you miss you drop to 3. Then I lift afterwards

What do you see the Chicago Bulls achieving this upcoming NBA season? Can they make a run in the east?

The Bulls will never make it past Lebron until they get a decent small forward that can average at least 20 a game

What is the state of Lebron James in 2015? Will he ever be mentioned in the same breath as Michael Jordan?

Lebron James will be Lebron James and he shouldn’t want to be someone else.He should create his own destiny and his own legacy and there will be never another Lebron James just like there will never be another MJ. Lebron is unique and one of a kind

What was the last movie that you saw?

Last movie I saw was “Parker” an action movie , from the beginning to the end it will keep you on your heels from the beginning to the end.

Thanks Kashaune for the chat

Matt Hunter(Rostock) I Heard Yannik Anzuluni Was A Very Good Player But I Feel That I Am A Very Good Player So I’m Just Ready To Prove Myself

Matt Hunter is a 24 year old 196cm forward from Detroit, Michigan that will be playing his second professional season and first in Germany with Rostock. Last season he played briefly in Canada with the Moncton Miracles as a rookie. He started his basketball career in 2010 with Odessa JC (NJCAA) where he played until 2012. He then moved to Cent.Conn.St. (NCAA) where he played two more years. As a senior he played 10 games: 9.3ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.3apg, 1.8spg, 1.3bpg, FGP: 46.2%, 3PT: 21.4%, FT: 57.1%. As a junior he played 30 games: 15.7ppg, 7.7rpg, 2.6apg, 2.6spg, FGP: 42.5%, 3PT: 31.9%, FT: 73.7%. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.

Welcome to Germany. You have signed to play in the German Pro B for the Rostock Seawolves. How blessed are you to finally be under contract again?

I feel extremely blessed to have this opportunity to play again. It’s all I have been thinking about since I got the news. Just never stopped working and getting ready for this and I have an amazing agent that never stopped working for me. I’m not sure but I know whoever did sign me that would be taking a risk considering I haven’t played.

You played your last game in November 2014 for Moncton. But you still found a new team early. What experiences did you make this off season in terms of finding a new team? Was it more difficult due to your inactivity as a rookie? Do you sense that your college video´s and huge games against Indiana and Syracuse give you an added bonus when teams are checking on your basketball history?

Yes a little because those guys went on to be pros and play overseas. But it wasn’t anything that I wasn’t doing for most of the year and I think they also noticed that to.

What were the main reasons for coming to Rostock? Did you have a conversation with head coach Sebastian Wild. If so what was your first impression?

To get back to playing the game I love to play. Yes, we spoke and coach to me seems like a real down to earth straight forward person.

What do you know about the country Germany and its basketball? Do you have any friends balling in Germany?

Not much just that they have a few different levels. I’m not sure how many but I do have a few over there playing and some going over to play.

How tough have the last 19 months been for you? First your college career ended in December of 2013 and as a rookie you played only one game. Who was the most important person that got you through this period?

It was really tough. I even started to doubt myself a little but it just wasn’t one person it was a few people. Like talking to my mom and seeing my little brother and sister play really kept me going a lot.

Last season you played one game for the Moncton Miracles (Canada-NBL Canada) against St John scoring 11 points in 20 minutes. When one is so inactive for so long, did this game stick in your mind for a long time in the last seven months?

Bad part about it is that I didn’t even know the stats and I don’t think I thought about it after the week was over

After your shortened college career and short stay in Canada, what were the most important things that you learned that will help you in the future in your endeavors?

Just keep working and never give up. Their are always going to be obstacles in your way, just depends on how you handle them.

You will be replacing top Pro B player of last season Yannick Anzuluni. Do you feel pressure that you will have to step up for Rostock or are you seeing this chance of just going out and taking care of business which you did at the NCAA ranks?

I see it as a chance to go out and take care of business. But to say I don’t feel a little pressure I would be lying. I heard he was a very good player but I feel that I am a very good player so I’m just ready to prove myself.

What is a hidden strength in your game that doesn´t get noticed right away on the court?

I have never really thought about it. I just try to play my hardest until it’s my time to come out.

Was your 40 point explosion against Indiana proof for you that you could play against anyone and against future NBA players? What do you remember most from this game?

I just wanted to show that it doesn’t matter who is on the floor as long as you play hard you can walk off the floor proud of yourself. I remember my team just cheering me on saying keep shooting.

What game is more memorable the 40 point explosion against Indiana or your 16 point, 13 rebound six steal effort against Syracuse?

That’s a tough one. I don’t think I could ever decide they both have moments I will never forget.

How did Howie Dickenman prepare you best for a professional basketball career at Central Connecticut State?

He just stayed on my head about everything. Told me what it was going to take and never stop working for what you really want.

Who won a one on one in practice you or Terrell Allen?

Lol I was not losing. I am too competitive. But he would get me once or twice a week.

How does a normal work out day look like for you on and off the court in the summer of 2015?

Wake up at 9 to go lift and run then get shots up. Go grab something to eat the back to the gym for shots dribbling and everything else.

What do the Detroit Pistons have to do become a winning team again?

Lol, it seems like they are trying to find the right pieces to become a winning team.

Where do you see Lebron James in 2015? Will he ever dethrone Michael Jordan as the greatest player ever?

Really?? He is a great player but I’m a Kobe fan. He took it from Jordan some time ago. Lebron has to take it from Kobe.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

Hero 6 with some of my sibling.

Thanks Matt for the chat,

Kenneth Simms(Eisbaeren Bremerhaven) I Believe That My Effort Each Year Is The Main Reason For My Consistent Play

Ken thanks for talking to German Hoops Where are you at the moment and how have you been enjoying your summer?

I’m currently living in the Bronx in New York , my summer has been amazing. I recently played in the Dominican Republic , it was a great experience . Beautiful place and people there

You recently played in the Dominican Republic for Soles de Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic-LNB) and your teammate was Ronnie Taylor. What do you remember most from his game? He played for 4 German team from 2005-2007 like Giessen as he started his professional career. Did he tell you anything about Germany in your short time or was Germany not an issue yet for you?

Ronnie is a great point guard , he sets his players up well . At the time I didn’t know I was going to Germany yet

Congrats on signing with the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven in Germany which will be your 11th country. Do you feel like a basketball globetrotter?

Haha yes I feel exactly like that , I have been so many places experienced so many cultures . Real blessed to have this experience .

In the famous and hilarious American movie Fast Times at Ridgemont high surfer dude Jeff Spuccoli aka Sean Penn utters the famous line “All I need are some tasty waves and a cool buzz and I ´m fine”. Could you say “all I need is a basketball and I am fine anywhere?

Yeah pretty much I believe I can adapt to most places as long as I’m playing ball !!

You seem not to be able to get enough of basketball. In the summers when other guys are resting, you still play as you have shown in China, Uruguay and the Dominican Republic the last years. Is there ever a day where you don’t have a basketball in your hands?

I love the game of basketball and I know it will one day leave me . I just try and take any opportunity that I can to play and better my game

You played Eurochallenge last season in Finland with KTP Basket Kotka, but opted to move to the German team team Eisbaeren Bremerhaven that don´t play international. How big of a lure was it to be able to play in the ever growing Beko BBL in Germany that wants to be the best league in Europe by 2020?

I loved playing for KTP , but we know how good the BBL is , it’s a chance to show my skills against top talent !! Even though there is no international play

What do you know about the country of Germany and its basketball in general. How important was your ex teammate Mike Smith on selling you not only on Germany but his ex team Bremerhaven?

Mike had very good things to say about the club , city and people .He told me I will be well taken care of , I just need to produce.

What really stands out in your professional basketball vita is your scoring and rebounding consistency. Is this something that has been built up more through continued hard work or just pure talent?

I put in a lot of work on my game , raw talent will only get you so far . I believe that my effort each year is the main reason for my consistent play

You scored an incredible ridiculous 38 times in double figures out of 49 games and registered 17 double doubles. The Beko BBL is a step above the Finish league in skill. How ready are you for this challenge?

I have played against high level Europeans teams , the only big difference is the amount of good players there are, every night I faced an import in Finland and was able to produce . I believe I can have similar success in Germany .

Last season you owned team Katja winning the season series 3-1, but Ken Horton won the Finish title. In all four games he was unstoppable as were you. Even though you don´t battle at the same position how much are you looking forward to playing against him and medi Bayreuth?

Ken is a very good player , it will be nice to see a familiar face in Germany , I expect to beat him though lol. Will see if he guards me I’m a bit more inside than he is

Consistency really stands out in your game, but what is a hidden strength in your game that doesn´t get noticed right away on the floor?

My defense sometimes gets over looked , for a big I can move pretty well .

You played in Belgium for Liege in the 2013-2014 season with ex Bremerhaven American Mike Smith. After a stellar career at E.Tenn.St. He played his rookie season with Bremerhaven and then had an unforgettable year in the D-League that didn´t happen. He totally revamped his career in Belgium the last two years. You witnessed his progression. Were you a guy as a veteran that supported him as he was coming off a low as was making a high with Liege?

Mike is a extremely hard worker , he was motivated in Belgium after being out a year , it showed he was a great scorer in Liege . I didn’t have to say much to get him going .

How proud are you of your ex teammate John Roberson who like you after many years in lower leagues has made the next step to the strongest league that he has ever played in in France where he will play for Chalon?

I recently talked to John , I couldn’t be more happier for him , he has come a long way and he deserves everything he is getting , he is a true champion and winner

As a rookie you played briefly for Marijampole Suduva-Arvi (Lithuania-LKL) before heading back to the states to play for the Maryland Marvels (ABA), but in your second season you blossomed with SCM CSU Craiova (Romania-Div.A) playing 32 games: 16.4ppg, Reb-1(11.0rpg), 1.6apg, 1.3spg, 1.3bpg, FGP: 59.4%, 3PT: 25.5%, FT: 53.1%. What was your wake up call to being a professional player in europe where you knew that you were far away from Queens, New York?

I didn’t really get a chance to play in suduva , so I went home and kept searching for an opportunity to play again, and luckily I went to a place where I could show my talents . That first year kind of prepared me for the challenges I would face the following year

When you look back how important was it making the move from UMKC (NCAA) to Cumberland(NAIA) which was a few steps back in leagues?

College was a bit of a mess honestly , twice the coach that recruited me was fired before I got to play. It left me in a bad position when I was done .

How did Cumberland head coach Lonnie Thompson prepare you best for a professional basketball career in your last year of college?

Lonnie showed me how to have thick skin , he is an angry and fiery coach, he wanted his players to always be aggressive , and it helped me out

Who won a one on one back in the day at Cumberland you or Rodney James?
