It was the weekend of the unbeaten teams playing in the BCM as on Saturday night the Bayer Giants Leverkusen left the practice facility of easyCredit BBL team Fraport Skyliners with a commendable 8-0 record one that most experts most likely wouldn´t have predicted at the start of the season. And on Sunday the roles were reversed as the Bayer Giants Leverkusen was in da house again, but this time with their youth squad and they brought a solid 3-1 record from home and met the unbeaten team of Eintracht Frankfurt-Fraport Skyliners as they came into the contest with a perfect 4-0 record and have just been mowing away their opponents as if there is absolutely no mercy. They had found together quickly on both ends of the court as on offense had an arsenal that reminded one of an NBA team as they averaged 95 points per game and on defense reminded one of a powerful Euroleague like team that played hard nosed defense giving up only 49 points per contest. They took apart the Baskets Juniors and BG Goettingen allowing only 44 points apiece. Last weekend they destroyed Phoenix Hagen 111-32 as at halftime the score was 61-24. Eintracht Frankfurt-Fraport Skyliners have demonstrated an early bonding where everyone understands their roles and have been fortified by many as the two stars 2017 JBBL top 4 players Len Schoormann and Calvin Schaum have been solid, but not explosive yet. On a mild Sunday afternoon, Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners didn´t have a cakewalk with the Bayer Giants Leverkusen, but were never really in danger of losing the game as They erased a 11 point lead and won easily at the end 82-61 going to 5-0 while Leverkusen moved to 3-2. Frankfurt´s three stars of Len Schorrmann, Maxi Begue and Calvin Schaum combined for 55 points and the club played an overall consistent defensive game. “We played a good first half and played very good defense giving up only 18 points. In the second half we didn´t have a good answer against their zone press. The third quarter wasn´t so good, but we became stable in the fourth quarter. They scouted us well and played good zone. We did a good job all day long getting on transition and helping on defense. We gave up too many offensive rebounds”, stressed Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners 16 year old Calvin Schaum. The Bayer Giants Leverkusen played a strong first quarter, but after that couldn´t contain Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners the way they wanted to on defense. “We didn´t defend well in the second quarter giving up too many turnovers leading to easy points for them. We won the third quarter with less turnovers. Overall we didn´t have the right attitude for the whole game. That has to get better”, warned Bayer Giants Leverkusen guard Lennart Winter.
The first quarter was a real defensive battle as neither club could find a healthy offensive rhythm and get their offenses going. After both youth teams missed their first couple of shots, it was Maxi Begue that got the first score on a coast to coast run and lay in. Moritz Fink then connected on a trey giving Leverkusen it´s first and only lead of the game. Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners ripped back the lead on a big Alvin Onyia bucket who played cherry picker hanging out in the zone and getting an offensive rebound and put back which isn´t an easy thing when your only 177cm and 73 kilos. 16 year old 2017 JBBL finalist Calvin Schaum followed wit a lay showing his great athletic skills as Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners led 6-3. The Bayer Giants Leverkusen relied on their outside shooting as point guard Lennart Schild dropped a trey. Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners forward Risto Vasiljevic countered with a trey giving Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners the 9-6 advantage. Both teams did a good job massively limiting each other´s big man Lars Thiemann and Jordan Samare as neither got the wanted touches or shot attempts in the paint. Ege ildan dropped a 20 footer to dead lock the game at 9-9, but they still couldn´t get over the hump as Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners ended the first quarter with a bucket from Jordan Samare. The German who averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds with the Rhein Stars JBBL team last season finally found some daylight penetrating hard to the hoop Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners led 11-9. “Both teams were nervous. Bot had open shots, but didn´t hit many. We ran were able to run more”, warned Calvin Schaum. Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners shot 31% form the field and 17% from outside and had 12 rebounds and 6 turnovers while the Bayer Giants Leverkusen shot 20% form the field and 29% from outside and got 11 rebounds and 7 turnovers.
The turning point of the game occurred in the second quarter as Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners made the tight game into a blow out as they had a 21-0 run to go into the break with the 38-18 advantage. Both teams traded buckets at the start as Begue did what he did to start the game going coast to coast only this time didn´t opt for the lay up, but rammed home a one handed dunk. Ildan followed with a lay in as Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners led 13-11. But then came the game changer as Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners unleashed a lethal 21-0 run to extend their lead to 34-11. In the run Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners were led by Len Schoormann and Clavin Schaum who combined for 14 points to lead the charge. Schaum was instrumental in the run as he started it with a trey and floater, but also was strong on the defensive end making two steals bringing disarray to the Leverkusen offense. “I noticed that my defenders weren´t so versatile on 1-1 play so I took it to my advantage. We had good ball movement in the run and they found me. When you go on a run and hit open shots, the shots tend to fall easier”, stressed Calvin Schaum. Schoormann added an extra blow getting into the zone and demonstrated his dangerous inside out play dropping a trey and scoring twice in the paint as his speed and explosiveness was very difficult to match and halt. Onyia and Samare also contributed to the run with baskets. The Bayer Giants Leverkusen finally got on the scoreboard again as Schild scored. The Bayer Giants Leverkusen did a good job all day long on the offensive board and in the last minute were rewarded by baskets from Winter and Marcel Kirsch who made put backs before the break. “We had good ball movement and played well against their zone”, stressed Calvin Schaum. Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners shot 47% from the field and 36% from the three point line and grabbed 20 boards and had 9 turnovers while the Bayer Giants Leverkusen shot 26% from the field and 29% from the three point line and grabbed 21 boards and had 11 turnovers.
The Bayer Giants Leverkusen had to make adjustments and did tightening up their zone and winning the third quarter putting up 30 points, but still trailed 59-44. The Bayer Giants Leverkusen got some quick buckets form Ildan and Kirsch cutting the Frankfurt lead to 40-22. However Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners offense was consistent enough to manage the big lead with ease. Schoormann got hot again drilling home a three and then ramming home a big one handed dunk flying over from the wing like an eagle. Schoormann rarely has a game where he doesn´t have a spectacular dunk and this one definitely turned heads. Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners then got a basket form Samare as Schoormann showed his good basketball IQ and passing abilities making the perfect feed. Schoormann´s scoring rage wasn´t finished just yet as he added three free throws and as Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners led 52-27. Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners remained aggressive on offense being able to keep a big lead, but it did shrink a bit because the guests finally hit a few buckets. The Bayer Giants Leverkusen then had a good spurt getting some stops and going on a 21-4 run to cut the Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners lead to 59-48 after 30 minutes and suddenly it was a game again. Kirsch made a lay in off the inbounds pass, Winter connected on a trey and Ildan scored on the fast break getting the perfect pass from Winter. The Bayer Giants Leverkusen was led by Lennart Winter in this phase as the team got more easy baskets. Winter was all over the court hitting another three and making a beautiful lay in around Vasiljevic on transition and also added free throws. “They had more energy than we did. Their zone press was strong and it took some time to find ourselves. They shot a lot better and got offensive rebounds”, stressed Calvin Schaum. “We defended better and reduced easy points. We were able to get more easy points on Frankfurt mistakes”, stressed Lennart Winter. Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners shot 49% from the field and 42% from the parking lot and secured 26 rebounds and had 15 turnovers while the Bayer Giants Leverkusen shot 41% from the field and 45% from the parking lot and secured 27 rebounds and had 18 turnovers.
The Bayer Giants Leverkusen continued to battle and cut Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners lead to 11 points in the fourth quarter, but couldn´t get over the hump as fatigue set in winning as the home team was able to win the game easily. The Bayer Giants Leverkusen played hard in the first few minutes keeping up with Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners as they got to the free throw line and got huge production from Jannis Kuck who dropped a trey and made a lay in as Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners still led 69-57. But Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners didn´t waste anytime then slamming the door on the Bayer Giants Leverkusen closing out the game with a commanding 13-4 run to remain undefeated. In the run Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners got good support from Begue who made a steal and scored and then scored on the penetration while Schaum scored with a put back and Schoormann made a reverse lay up. “They didn´t have any strength at the end. We kept the tempo high and they didn´t defend as well anymore. When we run a lot then good things happen”, stressed Calvin Schaum. “We had too many bad turnovers and missed easy lay ups”, added Lennart Winter. Eintracht Frankfurt/Fraport Skyliners was led by Len Schoormann with 24 points. Maxi Begue added 18 points. Calvin Schaum contributed 13 points and Alvin Onyia added 12 points.
