He spoke to German Hoops before the Fiba Europe Cup game against the Telekom Baskets Bonn.
Tyrone, thanks for talking to German Hoops You have reached the Fiba Europe Cup quarterfinals and now play against the Telekom Baskets Bonn. How excited are you for the chance to reach the final 4?
Yes, we are very excited to compete for a berth in the Final Four.
Before we talk about the quarterfinals let´s talk about the last round against Turkish team Royal Gazientep. You almost wouldn´t have been in the quarterfinals had Ironi Nahariya not played in Turkey on account of massive terrorist threats. How serious were these threats?
Apparently the threats were real. We had a bunch of CIA agents with us throughout the whole trip which was different from any other trip we had during the year thus far. But they kept us all safe and away from harm.
The club then did play the game. How did you go into the game concerning the possible danger that was looming? Did you fear for your life or was a lot of the talk a bit overblown?
It was definitely a strange game to play with all the security and news coverage surrounding us. I feel we all definitely were more alert and cautious during the trip. But despite the circumstances, we managed to put that all behind us and take care of business.
How fortunate was Ironi Nahariya for advancing? Ex NBA player Andrew Rautins ahd a great series and poured in 26 points in Turkey and American Marcus Denmon had 25 points. What overall was key for getting by them?
Yeah, both of them put on incredible performances. We knew they had a lot of offensive firepower with their guards. However, we knew if we could just weather the storm we would be good. We did that, and moved on to the next round.
Would Ironi Nahariya advanced without the stellar play of American Derwin Kitchen who almost supplied a triple double? Was he the difference in that second game?
Yes, Derwin played extremely well for us in those two games. His ability to rebound so well from the guard position is a real advantage for us on both the offensive and defensive ends. Along with his playmaking abilities, Derwin serves as a vital part of our success as a team.
Ironi Nahariya now face the Telekom Baskets Bonn who have played a near flawless Fiba Europe Cup season and are also peaking in the BBL. What do you believe will be your biggest challenge as a team?
I know from experience how tough it is to play in the Telekom Dome. The atmosphere will be tough, especially with how well they are playing currently. Composure will be key for us as a team. But if we play how we are capable of playing the game should be very interesting.
If I were to ask you what comes to mind first when I say Telekom Baskets Bonn and your 7 games against them what would you say?
Pink jerseys and tough battles!
You have a positive 5-2 record against Bonn with Tuebingen and Braunschweig and funny enough your first three games in your first two seasons with the Walter Tigers Tuebingen were all won by two points. Then last season you won another two point game against Bonn with Braunschweig. Can you remember having so many close games against one opponent in your career?
It sort of reminds me of my battles against Louisville in college where most of our games would go wire to wire. Close games are definitely nerve wrecking lol. Trust me, I rather win by 10+ points.
You scored in double figures in six of your seven meetings with them. If you had to choose one game that stands out most which would it be?
I think it was my second year in Tübingen and we were in Bonn playing. We erased a 10pt lead with less than 2 minutes to go in the game to come back and win. That game will forever be memorable for me.
The Telekom Baskets Bonn average 85 points in the Fiba Europe Cup and have the second best defense with allowing 72 points in the competition. They are a very athletic, quick and disciplined defensive team. How confident are you that your offense will be successful against them?
Despite their stingy defense, we know if we play smart, move the ball well and keep their defense spread we can attack where they are vulnerable . Hopefully, we can knock down some shots to make our lives a bit easier.
What will be key in reaching the Fiba Europe Cup Final 4 and getting by the tough Telekom Baskets Bonn?
Staying disciplined and composed during these two games will be very important for us.
Teammate Yancy Gates won´t be a help either despite playing there last season the whole team is new, coach is new and the only player he might remember is Florian Koch. Do you see Gates being a bit more motivated than usual since he will be playing his old team?
Yes, Gates has really been in a groove during our last few games. He has been playing well on both the defensive and offensive ends. We hope he can continue this good stretch during these next two games against Bonn. I always feel as a player you tend to get a bit more motivated playing against a former team.
You might remember Ryan Thompson from a few years ago when he played with Bamberg. Does his athleticism and shooting abiity stick in your mind when you remember his game with Bamberg?
I remember the name but not his game very well. But as we prepare for Bonn in these next coming days we will definitely see what his strengths are and try to limit them.
You had a very strong series against Royal Gazientep where you averaged 31 minutes whereas in the Israeli Winner league your minutes are up and down. How confident are you that you will get your minutes and be able to contribute the way you know how?
I hope my play in the last round against Gazientep also provides me an opportunity to showcase my skills against a talented Bonn team. If I get that chance, I plan on producing and doing whatever it takes to help my team move on to the next round.
Draymond Greene recently had a triple double without scoring 10 points or more. Why do you believe has it taken long for someone to do this?
I am kind of shocked it took this long. I would have put money on it that a guy like Jason Kidd would have achieved something like that already. Impressive nonetheless!
What was the last movie that you saw?
Thanks Tyrone for the chat.
