Matt Reid (Artland Dragons) Confidence Is Always Good But Too Much Can Be Deadly

Matt Reid is a 33 year old 185cm guard that hast he German/American citzenship and is playing his tenth professional season and first with the Artland Dragons. He started his career with Cerritos JC (NJCAA) and then played two seasons with Cameron (NCAA2) and as a senior played 26 games averaging  20.2ppg, 5.4rpg, 3.3apg, 2.2spg, FGP: 46.1%, 3TP: 36.0%, FT: 81.0%. He turned professional in 2007 and played for the Schwelmer Baskets (Germany-Regionalliga).He then played two seasons with Saarlouis before moving to SC Rasta Vechta where he played from 2010-2012. He then gained further experience with RSV Eintracht Stahnsdorf (Germany-ProB) and Herten(Pro B). He returned back to SC Rasta Vechta in 2014 where he played two more seasons before moving to Artland this season. He spoke to German Hoops after the big 91-82 win against Stahnsdorf.

Matt thanks for talking to German Hoops 2017 had come and we are already in February. Did you make any new years resolutions or are you more the type of guy that doesn´t bother with that?

My New Years resolution is to just stick to the plan and stay focused on helping our team reach our goal this season and win a championship.

Congrats on the 91-82 win against Stahnsdorf sweeping the season series. How much was the 77-73 win in your minds as the game started? Did the team know how important it was to take this team seriously?

We knew that it would not be an easy game to win, both teams season statistics match up almost exactly alike and I think it just came down to effort and the willingness to win the game. The next 4 games are extremely important for us to win to get the number 1 seed going into playoffs and I’m confident in our team to reach this goal. We worked hard all season to put ourselves in this position but right now we are only focused on our next opponent Bochum that has not lost a home game all season so far.

The Artland Dragons had the tight 44-40 advantage at the break. What was making this game more difficult for the team then what it had anticipated?

Stahnsdorf played a great first half of basketball and we did not take advantage of them playing zone defense against us like we usually do against other teams that decide to play zone defense.

You have to give Stahnsdorf a lot of credit as they stayed on your heels until mid way through the fourth quarter. Was it more their stellar play or did it have to do more with how you were playing that kept them in the game?

I think it had to do with a little bit of both, they made some tough shots at the end of the shot clock and we did a great job staying calm and executing our plays in the zone offense.

What was key in crunch-time for getting the victory. Did Stahnsdorf fade a bit due to fatigue?

We took care of the ball executed well in offense and got stops when we needed to on the defensive end of the floor.

Stahnsdorf had overwhelming control of the boards 52-35 and hauled down 21 offensive rebounds. As a veteran that leaves his shirt on the floor every game how can you explain a rebounding effort like that?

Well being that we lost our 6’8 big man Kenneth Cooper, we are a bit undersized when it comes to under the basket rebounding and we are adjusting to this factor and it has been a bit of an issue right now for us but we make no excuses and I just think it’s up to the guards now to pick up the slack and crash the boards because our bigs are working hard under basket 40 minutes every game.

What made it so difficult to keep a guy like Josh Smith in check who grabbed 18 rebounds including 10 offensive rebounds?

He is a crafty big and we knew going into the game he would do his thing when it came to rebounding and scoring around the basket. As long as we control the other 4 players on the court we would be just fine and we did a great job doing that.

I cant remember the Pro B being this tight and exciting as three teams are 12-5 and two are 11-6. What do you feel will be key for any team winning the Pro B north regular season?

Pro B North is strong this season lots of competitive teams that can beat anyone on any given night. Winning the Pro B North regular season is going to just come down to which team wants it the most.

The Artland Dragons had a bad stretch in December losing three in a row, but now are riding a four game winning streak. What has been the reason s for the turnaround now?

It has a lot to do with our new coaching staff, coach Flo has done a great job helping us reaching our full potential as a team. We play with a more faster pace and I won’t speak too much about it because we still have to play some teams that still are new to our style of play andnd also coach Chris has a great understanding on how he thinks our defensive mindset should be for 40 minutes.

Are the Artland Dragons peaking now or is it still going to happen?

I think we still have lots of time left in the season for hard work to be done and it’s definitely too early to say we have peaked but all I can say is that we are hungry and understand what lies ahead of us and just focused on this week with working hard to prepare ourselves for our next opponent Bochum.

How valuable has the pick up of American Stacey Wilson? He had more of a role in the Pro A with Chemnitz and is only averaging 14 minutes with the Artland Dragons. How has he been able to help most without having big minutes?

Stacey can do it all, pass, shoot , defend , rebound , create and not to mention his hard working mentality he has. He’s been great for our team this season so far. Being that we can only have 2 Americans on the floor together in Pro B its tough to get a lot of minutes when you have 3 efficient Americans on a team like we do. With that being said it shows so much character on his part to understand that like he does. Sometimes when you are on a winning team sacrifices are made to win championships and Stacey has definitely made a sacrifice that has benefited our team tremendously and this is what a team needs when they are trying to win a championship.

The nextv game is against Bochum who you easily disposed off 74-57 in the first encounter of the season. Do you sense an incredible self-confidence currently with the team that will be more than half the rent to get the win?

Confidence is always good but too much can be deadly. We know Bochum will want revenge and also have not lost a home game yet this season so far and I’m confident we will be ready Saturday.

Let´s talk a bit about your game. You are playing a consistent season. How happy have you been with your playmaking? On what things do you concentrate most on at this juncture of the season to perfect to get your team in the best possible position to win the regular season title and then do damage in the playoffs?

I’m just making sure I lessen my turnovers and make sure I keep up the energy on the defensive end of the floor. As a point guard on such a great individually talented team It’s my job to organize the game to get our bigs involved early and the ball to our shooters as well and if needed I’m able to create and score.

You continue to be the teams best defender. How much pride do you take in the team being the best possible defensive team. What input do you give to the team in practice when working on defensive schemes?

We talk a lot during the week about defense and how we can improve. I think the key is for me is too not lose focus on the defensive end of the floor during the week and to stay tuned in on every defensive possession or drill in practice and that helps towards us being better as a team on defense on gameday.

Where do you rank Kevin Garnett with the best power forwards that ever played the game?

K-G was one of my favorite big’s when I was kid growing up, before my youth practices I would always imitate his fade aways and his foot work in the paint. He is definitely a future hall of fame basketball player in my opinion.

Klay Thompson recently hit 60 points in 29 minutes touching the ball for only 90 seconds. Where does this performance rank with you?

Unbelievable performance I just wish he could have played longer just to see if he could have reached 81 like Kobe Bryant.

One always talks about Lebron and Curry, but one has to mention Russell Westbrook. He is averaging triple double stats at the moment. Is he stat wise the best player in the world right now?

As for stats I would have to say him and James Harden are playing amazing basketball right now when it comes to numbers.

What was the last movie that you saw?

Thanks Matt for the chat.
