He spoke to German Hoops before the Champions League game against the Fraport Skyliners.
Thanks Tyrone for talking to German Hoops. 2017 has arrived. Are you a type of guy that makes new years resolutions or more a guy that doesn´t make to big a deal about that?
I’m a type of guy who doesn’t make a big deal out of stuff like that.
Ironi Nahariya have been playing some good basketball as of late having a four game winning streak in the Winner league and two game winning streak in the Champions league. How satisfied have you been with the play of the team?
I always like winning way more than losing. With that being said, even in our wins we can still improve on some keys elements of both our offense and defense. But after a rough losing stretch, it is definitely nice to rattle off some wins.
How important has the current 4 game winning streak been in the Winner League for being able to construct the current 2 game winning streak in the Champions League?
It has been great for our overall confidence, because we know we are a good team but there are times where we do not play up to our full potential or we may have some mental lapses in late game situations and it has costs us some games — all learning experiences though. Getting those two wins in the Winner definitely allowed us to remain confident going into our Champions League games.
After the huge 75-54 win against the Fraport Skyliners, the team suffered a 4 game losing streak in the Champions League. The team got away from their defensive principles as it averaged giving up 85 points in the next three games. What got lost on the defensive end that didn´t allow the team to defend better?
We had some mental lapses on defense and at times, I feel like our struggles on offense effected our defense on the other end and that should never be the case. We know we can bring it every day on the defensive end, all it takes is pride and heart. We just have to continue practicing our defensive principles and get back to getting consecutive stops on the defensive end which will make our lives easier on the offensive end.
The team gave up only 61 points on average against the two weakest teams in the bracket with Bakken and Helios. What has the team been doing better on the defensive end now?
We really focused on getting consecutive stops and letting our defense dictate our offense. We also did a great job of trusting one another. Believing that there will be help in the case that someone gets beat on defense. That trust and belief in one another, especially on the defensive end, goes a long way! When we do that, and move and share the ball on offense, one can see just how good of a team we are.
Do you feel like playing these two weaker teams was the correct competition for the upcoming do or die game in Frankfurt? The self-confidence must be sky high going into Frankfurt?
Yeah, those game were good because as I said before we had a chance to get back to our defensive principles. Also, with our last game in the Winner League against Hapoel Jerusalem, I think it was a good test for our unit going into this big game against Frankfurt. We lost a close game at the buzzer so we are ready to get that bad taste out of our mouths.
How excited are you about this do or die game. This game is for fifth position. If you win you will get the fifth position. Does a game remind you a bit about the game against Phoenix Hagen that you had with Tuebingen? Granted that was too stay I the league which was greater than this situation, but this is still a big game.
My teammates and I are very excited for this game. There is nothing like fighting for a playoff spot. We are poised and ready to go into a tough environment in Frankfurt and give it our best. Yes, It does remind me a little bit of that game in Tuebingen against Hagen. I hope this game will end with the same result — victory! Lol
Ironi Nahariya played very well at home. Gates and Brown combined for 42 points. How much was scouting responsible for limiting the Fraport Skyliners to 54 points?
The scouting was very important in limiting their key guys. We know they are coming off a big win at Aris and a tough loss to a good Oldenburg team so we will definitely look at those games to see how we again limit their key guys. We know not to expect a high scoring affair with Frankfurt because we know how much they stress defensive. We just hope we can make more stops on Wednesday night.
The Fraport Skyliners are coming off a huge win in Greece against Aris. Both teams are great defensive teams. Can we await a defensive battle?
We will try to disrupt their offense and make them work on defense, especially their key players. We know if we get their key players in foul trouble, and get to their bench, we can use that as an advantage.
Yancy Gates has really grown into the work horse of the team. What have you been able to appreciate most about his game?
Just how skilled and crafty he is on the block and in the paint. He has an adept handle of the ball which allows him to easily get around other bigs. And also his passing skills out of the post, that ability makes it very difficult for the opposition to double team him because he knows how to make the right pass out of it.
How have you adjusted to the Russian Rule. You aren´t doing what your used to stat wise this season. What are you focusing most on your game to continue to become a better player despite your role?
I am focusing on going out there and producing whenever my number is called. I just try to take advantage of any opportunity I get out there on the court. This role has definitely been challenging for me but I am making the best out of it.
Klay Thompson recently hit 60 points in 29 minutes touching the ball for only 90 seconds. Where does this performance rank with you?
That performance was unreal! I have never seen the likes of it and it definitely goes down as one of the top performances I have ever witnessed.
One always talks about Lebron and Curry, but one has to mention Russell Westbrook. He is averaging triple double stats at the moment. Is he stat wise the best player in the world right now?
Stat wise he is. What he is doing in unprecedented. I just hope he can continue at this pace.
What was the last movie that you saw?
Thanks Tyrone for the chat.
