Chad Prewitt And Barry Stewart Shoot Out The Lights Erasing The 9 Game Giessen Losing Streak Against The Fraport Skyliners 78-65

Winning against the LTi Giessen 46ers in recent years has seemed as simple for the Fraport Skyliners as the fourth quarter was recently for San Francisco 49er Alex Smith as he showed Drew Brees and the Saints who boss is and sent them on an early vacation, Hollywood actress Jessica Biel not getting ticked off at the material girl Madonna for accidently stomping all over her dress at the Golden Globe awards or Tim Tebow fans hurriedly jumping off his band wagon as Kevin known as Jesus of West Hollywood recently did after the Broncos humiliating 45-10 playoff loss to the New England Patriots and Tom Brady. Coming into the game, the Fraport Skyliners had won the last nine games against the LTiGiessen 46ers and last four at home. The last loss against Giessen was a 2007 Rouven Roessler buzzer beater as ex Skyliners Robert Maras and Gerrit Terdenge celebrated while guys like Michael Bauer, Mike Benton and Jemeil Rich were sulking. However there is always a time for long winning streaks to get snapped as the LTi Giessen 46ers marched into the Fraport arena and quickly got next to the fire place shoving the Skyliners away early and never letting them get comfortable near the warmth with their FAZ newspaper as they won the Hessen derby 78-65. For the players on both teams the long streak didn´t mean much except to Mckinney who had lost to Giessen only once in his career. “We could of ended the first half of the season with a win and have a clear mind going into the second half of the season, but we were a step slow today”, stated a disappointed Jimmy Mckinney. For American Chad Prewitt, he had worn the red of the Artland Dragons for 175 games, but felt very comfortable in the dark red colors of Giessen. “I may not be part of this team long, but I know about the Frankfurt-Giessen rivalry. We have been struggling this season and had injuries, so this was a big win. Frankfurt has always had good teams, but for some reason, they play better on the road this season. We are just happy that we got the win. It was hard to see Achmadschah Zazai go down with an injury. He is always hustling so much. This win is for him”, stressed Chad Prewitt. “It was tough losing this game after not playing in Giessen. I feel a bit responsible as I made some mistakes at the end. This loss reminded me of when we played Nichols in college. We beat them my first three years twice each season, but lost my last game against them”, stressed Skyliner guard Devin Gibson.

The Fraport Skyliners were looking for their second home win in a row, but continue having problems winning in their own living room. The Fraport Skyliners enter the 2012 Beko BBL Allstar break with an 8-11 record and rest in 12th place. It was a very bitter loss as the team had fought back to tie the game at 57, but were unable to get over the hump and celebrate their third home win of the season. “Key for Giessen winning was that they did a good job capitalizing on our defensive breakdowns. It was just  a terrible defense performance by us. They made us pay for that with their three point shooting”, stressed St Louis native Jimmy Mckinney.

The LTi Giessen 46ers entered the game with a miserable 1-8 road record, but were coming off a big win against the Walter Tigers Tuebingen at home last weekend. “We were very well prepared for this game. We knew that they like to switch on the screens so we were ready for what they gave us. We went inside a lot in the first half and in the second half shot more from outside. The three pointers by Prewitt also helped our self confidence”, added ex MBC guard Wayne Bernard.

One thing that the Fraport Skyliners have not experienced have been all too weak starts, but in the first two minutes, they seemed baffled by the quick start as the LTi Giessen 46ers led 8-2 as their offense was clicking on all cylinders. Ex Skyliner Koko Archibong got the scoring attack ignited with a lay in as versatile passer Elvir Ovcina found him with a quick pass and ex TBB Trier guard Barry Stewart showed he can move well using a screen scoring uncontested inside and then made a fade away over Jacob Burtcshi. Jermareo Davidson then hit a jumper as Frankfurt trailed 6-2. New 46er Taj Mucullough then took advantage of the less aggressive Skyliner board work getting his own rebound and getting  a put back and Archibong made  a hook shot over Davidson as Giessen led 10-4 and had the total momentum. Just like in Wurzburg, American Devin Gibson was inserted off the bench and he was an instant spark plug making an impact scoring inside and  a no hesitation three pointer bringing Frankfurt back into the game trailing only 13-9. However the energy plug that Gibson had given Frankfurt didn´t seem to faze Giessen as they responded with a in your face 10-0 run to lead 23-9. Archibong continued to unleash his vicious hook shot hitting it over Burtschi, Serb Radenk Pilcevic nailed a three pointer, Stewart hit free throws and Mucullough an easy lay in bucket getting the lob pass from Ovcina. Giessen was hitting their shots very well and Frankfurt couldn´t match their intensity or aggressiveness on both ends of the floor. In the last few minutes, Giessen continued to practice their offensive onslaught as Stewart hit a difficult step back fade away jumper and Mucullough scored inside as Giessen led 28-13 after one quarter. “Giessen was doing a good job pressuring the ball and playing off their momentum and got easy points inside. Frankfurt couldn´t find their rhythm. Giessen had many guys stepping up”, commented TBB Trier guard James Washington. The LTi Giessen 46ers were shooting 61% from the field and an overwhelming 76% from outside while the Fraport Skyliners were shooting 40% from the field and 33% from outside. Giessen had the 8-7 rebound edge and Frankfurt had seven turnovers while Giessen only had one turnover.

In the second quarter, The Fraport Skyliners finally made their move as they jumped on the LTi Giessen 46ers with a 17-6 run to cut the lead to 34-30. Archibong got Giessen on the board first as he used the lax Frankfurt rebound work with an offensive rebound and put back and Davidson hit  a pull up jumper as Giessen led 30-15.  Quantez Robertson then hit a big three pointer and it was Gibson supplying the energy as he forced a turnover stripping the ball from behind which led to a lay in as Frankfurt trailed only 30-20. Giessen then interrupted the Frankfurt run with a mini 4-0 spurt  as Archibong scored inside and Ovcina connected for a hook shot as Giessen led 34-22. However Frankfurt blasted off with an 10-0 run as Gibson gave the needed offensive support again with a lay in and free throws, Mckinney dropped a bomb from downtown and Marius Nolte scored inside getting a no look feed from Robertson as Giessen led only 34-30. Frankfurt couldn´t keep the momentum as Giessen put a dent into it ending the second quarter with a mini 4-0 run as Prewitt made a mid distance jumper and Ovcina made a jumper as Davidson was late each time on his assignment. Johannes Herber did end the second quarter with a bang with  abuzzer beater three pointer. The LTi Giessen 46ers led 38-33 at halftime. “Devin Gibson gave Frankfurt the needed spark on offense and was strong on defense with his quick hands. His play totally changed the game and they also did a good job keeping Ovcina farther away from the basket”, stressed St Louis native James Washington. The LTi Giessen 46ers were shooting 52% from the field and 43% from the three point line while the Fraport Sklyiners were shooting 52% from the field and 57% from the three point line. Giessen had the slight 14-13 rebound advantage and eight turnovers while Frankfurt had 14 turnovers.

After the second quarter offense explosion of both teams, the start of the third quarter had many bricks as neither team wanted to set the pace on offense. When both teams finally decided it was time for offense, it was Davidson who got Frankfurt on track first as he snuck inside for an easy lay up as Frankfurt trailed only 38-35. However the LTi Giessen 46ers found  ahot shooting day and it continued as they cruised out on a 14-2 lead to seemingly have the game in their hands to lead 52-37. Prewitt connected for three three pointers in this run. “When I am open, I take the three pointer. It helped that I hit a few to get us on a roll”, expressed Chat Prewitt. “Frankfurt was getting good shots, but they just weren´t going in. Frankfurt went to a zone, but Giessen made their shots”, said James Washington. Frankfurt closed out the third quarter with a mini 4-3 run as Jimmy Mckinney hit a jumper and Skyliner captain nailed two free throws. The LTi Giessen 46ers had the comfortable 52-41 lead. “The three pointers changed the game. That gave them more confidence and once you are leading in double digits, it gives you extra energy on defense. Giessen also did a good job keeping Davidson away from the basket”, stressed James Washington. The LTi Giessen 46ers were shooting 45% from the field and 58% from the parking lot while The Fraport Skyliners were shooting 37% from the field and 36% from the parking lot. Giessen still had the narrow lead in rebounding 25-23. Frankfurt had 16 turnovers while Giessen had only 11 turnovers.

In the fourth quarter, the Fraport Skyliners continued to fight, something which has been their trade mark this season giving one last comeback going on a 16-5 run knotting the game at 57-57. Mckinney friend James Washington had seen Mckinney shoot his whole life and was just waiting for the St Louis native to explode with his shooting connecting for three three pointers. “At halftime, I looked down at him and just told him to shoot the damn ball. He got more aggressive shooting the ball which was exactly what I wanted to see”,  expressed James Washington.”Like I told you in Giessen in the first game, I always want the ball in my hand”, warned Jimmy Mckinney.  Frankfurt also got needed contribution from Robertson who got an easy bucket on transition and a three pointer and hustle tip in from Gibson. However Giessen continued to rely on the long ball as the club went on a 14-1 run to lead 71-58 and seal the win. Barry Stewart was left open twice as he connected and big man Ovcina who can always hurt you from outside hit from downtown. “Frankfurt needed a lot of energy in their run and we kept our offense together and just had a good shooting day. We hit big shots. We are a lot better shooting team than what our stats show”, warned Chad Prewitt. With time running down, Mckinney kept the fans hopes alive with a three pointer to cut the Giessen lead to 71-60. But With the Fraport Skyliners slowly licking their wounds, Giessen sprayed the wounds with salt breaking their necks with a 5-0 run as Archibong hit with a one handed runner and Pilcevic nailed a three pointer as Frankfurt trailed 76-60 with a minute to play. Robertson and Gibson hit a pair of shots, but it was too little to late as Giessen finally won another installment of the Hessenderby. “We have to be focused better in the next game. Mentally we were out of it and seemed already to be on break”, warned Devin Gibson. “We had enough energy at the end and with every shot we made and defensive stop we produced, helped our confidence which push our momentum to increase the lead”, stated Wayne Bernard.

The LTi Giessen 46ers were led by Barry Stewart and Koko Archibong that had 17 points  a piece. Chad Prewitt and Radenko Pilcevic contributed for 14 points a piece. The Fraport Skyliners were led by Devin Gibson with 21 points, six rebounds, two assists and four steals. Mckinney added 16 points, three rebounds and four assists. Quantez Robertson chipped in with 10 points. After letting up an average of only 63 points a game in the last 11 games, The Fraport Skyliners gave up 78 points while Giessen shot very well at 50% from the field and 61% from outside. Frankfurt lost the rebound battle and had an old turnover sickness with 19. Despite the 78 points given up, Giessen guard Bernard didn´t see the defense as a big problem. “I felt the Frankfurt defense was decent. We just hit many big shots which helped our confidence”, added Wayne Bernard. Frankfurt has been having offensive problems all season and could only manufacture 65 points despite shooting over 40%. “We forced many turnovers and didn´t let them get into a smooth rhythm. We made Davidson take difficult shots”, expressed Chad Prewitt. The Fraport Skyliners now will have five days to recharge the batteries and remember one positive thing and think about an old great habit. “We fought the whole game even in defensive break downs. We just broke down at the end. We have to stay focused and just remember what got us on that five game road win streak which was defense”, warned Jimmy Mckinney.
