EJ Gallup is a 26 year old 193cm guard from Gloverville, New York. He is playing his first season as a member of TBB Trier. He is a very positive player on the court, who plays with talent and personality. Has great offensive skills and knows how to do at the defensive side. He started his basketball career at Albany (NCAA2) in 2000 and played there until 2002. He then transferred to Co.Carolina (NCAA) where he played until 2004. In his senior year, he played 29 games: 17.2ppg, 3.1rpg, 1.8apg, 1.8spg, FGP: 45.2%, 3PT: 43.4%, FT: 89.6%. He started his professional basketball career in 2006 with Albany Patrons (CBA). He then moved to Germany in the same season playing for ratiopharm Ulm (Germany-1.Bundesliga): 10 games: 4.7ppg, 2FGP: 35.3%, 3PT: 33.3%, FT: 2-3. In 2007-2008, he returned to Ulm playing 34 games: 12.2ppg, 1.8rpg, 1.3apg, 2FGP: 42.9%, 3PT: 31.6%, FT: 87.3%. He stepped away from the court from 2008-2011 before returning last summer to play for the Albany Legends (IBL, starting five): 17ppg, 4.4rpg, 3.6apg, 3PT: 56%(1). He spoke to German Hoops this summer about basketball.
Congrats on your new job with TBB Trier. After 3 years absence from the Beko BBL, how does it feel to be returning back to Germany?
It feels great, Im happy to be back in Germany, and excited to be playing for TBB Trier.
In the 2007-2008 season you played with Ratiopharm Ulm having a solid season averaging 12.2ppg, 1.8rpg, 1.3apg, 2FGP: 42.9%, 3PT: 31.6%, FT: 87.3%. Why did you leave the basketball world then?
I had a great experience in Ulm, but for me at that time I decided to go in a different direction than basketball and opened a bar and grille.
Did you follow a different kind of summer workout schedule this summer preparing for your return?
Well I had a different type of basketball schedule this year because I played in the IBL for the Albany Legends so we were in season all the way until July.
How did a typical summer workout session day look like as EJ Gallup?
In July after the IBL season was over I took a little time off to rest and then at the end of July I got back in the gym, with individual workout sessions and lifting.
You played this year for the Albany Legends of the IBL, what kind of experience was this and what could you learn from head coach Ben Smith?
I was a great experience for me because Ben Smith and the Albany Legends gave me the opportunity to restart my career and show teams overseas that I was still in shape, and could play at a high level.
You are returning back to the Beko BBL and will play for TBB Trier. What were the main reasons for going to this club
Well I met with Coach Roedl this summer in Wilmington, NC and had workout with him and got to know him a little bit and knew I would be comfortable coming over and playing for him.
Did you talk to ex coach Mike Taylor before you made your decision? What kind of advice did he give you?
I didnt get a chance to talk to coach Taylor right before I made my decision but we have exchanged emails in the past and he has been nothing but supportive of me and always has.
How aware are you about TBB Trier head coach Henrik Roedl and his achievements? I am sure that you watched the 1993 NCAA final North Carolina-Michigan where Roedl helped win the title.
Yes Im familiar with what Coach Roedl has done as a player and obviously respect what he has done on the court. I also think that was he has done as a player will help him in the transition into becoming a very good coach.
Have you had talks with coach Roedl? What will be your role in the team?
Yes, we have had talks. I expect that my role will be to come in and be a professional and step in to whatever role that will be needed from me. After being away for three years I am just thrilled to be back on a team again, and look forward to just being one of the guys.
You will be reunited with Dru Joyce. What is something that you will never forget about Dru Joyce on and off the court from the Ulm days?
Well Dru is a good friend of mine I think first and foremost is that he is a good person. He has a very good work ethic and he is very motivated and competitive, which are the type of characteristics you want to have from your PG. He is a more experienced player than when he was in his rookie season with Ulm, and has become a very solid player in the Beko BBL.
How vivid is winning the 2008 Beko BBL allstar three point shooting contest? Where is your award sitting these days?
That was a very fun night in Hamburg. It was something that was different and fun and I think when Im old and cant play anymore it will be a good memory to look back on. The award actually is still floating around Germany somewhere, it was supposed to be sent to me but never was haha. So if anyone has seen or sees the 2008 trophy please send it to Trier!
What is a strength in your game that doesn´t get noticed right away?
I think my passing to be honest, Im known as a shooter and always being counted on to knock down 3’s and stretch defenses. But my ball handling and passing has been something that I have been working on a lot since I last played in Ulm.
What is something about the country Germany that you are looking forward to seeing again?
Germany is a beautiful place. Im from Upstate New York and grew up in the Adirondack Mountains so in Ulm and in Trier it has some of the same landscape which I think is very nice. I also like walking through the city centers in different cities in Germany and being outside.
Who won a one on one game in pratice at Ulm you or Dru Joyce? Who will have the revenge factor this time around?
Dru and I never really got into the 1 on 1 game in Ulm. We would get up a lot of shots together after practice in Ulm and it will probably be the same way in Trier. But if we did play 1 on 1 we might be there for a while because we both hate to lose, so if he beat me then id want a rematch right away, and I know for sure he would want a rematch if I beat him.
What is your opinion about NBA player Ron Artest changing his name to World Peace?
Well its his name so he can do whatever he wants with it and anyone trying to do what they can to bring about world peace is cool with me!
Thanks EJ for the chat.
