Phil took some time to talk to German Hoops about the 2011 European Championships.

Last summer there was no Dirk and Chris Kaman. Now both are on board. How intense has the whole Last atmosphere on and off the court been for you?

Like last year everbody gives a 100% and tries to do everything possible to win. What changed now is the fact that we got higher aims. We are trying to get under the top 6 teams at least. Off the court everything stays the same. We got a great team chemistry which is definitely one of our biggest strength. Ofcourse more people in Germany are interested in basketball now which makes everything become more fun.

Dirk Nowitzki belongs to the best players on earth now. What things have surprised you most about the player and person Dirk Nowitzki?

People told me a lot about Dirk, before I met him the first time. I have never heard a single bad word about Dirk and it´s all true. I was wondering before, if people might exaggerate a little bit,  but they don´t. He is a great teammate.

How important were the two wins against Macedonia last weekend in Munich and Berlin? How prepared is the German national team for the 2011 European championships?

We are used the games to find our rhythm as a team and to get to know each other better. I think we did a good job until now. We take the confidence of the two wins and trying to take it into the tournament, but everything starts from now on. Everything what happened before doesn´t count now.

What is your biggest goal on the court at your position besides winning and defending well?

To be a good teammate.

The first game is against Israel? This is a game Germany should win, but one should never underestimate them! What will be key in getting the win?

It´s important to find our rhythm early and start the tournament off with a win. But in this group everything can happen- especially at the first game. So we got to be ready from the get go. We have to play controlled, and good team basketball in the offense and off course be tough on defense.

Which German non NBA player national player has impressed you most in the last weeks in practice and games and why.

I  think our biggest strength is that we play as a team and everbody is patient and does everything what he can do to win a basketabll game. So on everyday somebody can step up and have a great game,  so it´s hard to point somebody out. We are one unit!

What have you learned from Chris Kamin the last week that you didn´t know before?

Chris is probably one of the funniest teammates i´ve ever had. it´s great to have him on the team. He really tries to help us young guys on the court with his experience and off the court he is always good for a joke.

Thanks Phil for the chat
