The Skyliner world has been turned a bit upside down in the last 72 hours as Gordon Herbert signed with alba Berlin and you followed him signing  a two year deal. Could this move have been prevented?

Yes I think it could have been prevented, but I had certain clauses in the contract and one was being that I would only stay if coach Herbert stayed. I am very thankful to the Frankfurt organization for having been able to come back after not playing for a year and play there. The Skyliner fans showed great support. I told you last season that the most important thing for me is to win titles and Alba Berlin gives me and coach the best opportunity of reaching that goal.

What were the main reasons for leaving The Deutsche Bank Skyliners?

The main reason going to Alba Berlin is having the best chance to win a title. The biggest part of going is just having the best chance of being able to win. It would have been tough going back to Frankfurt with no coach, no Pascal Roller and no Dominik Bahiense De Mello. Frankfurt seems like they will have a rebuilding year. It is like a dream come true for me to play for Alba Berlin. Every player wants to play for this team that is rich with basketball history. This will be the first time for me trying to qualify for the Euroleague. This will be a very big challenge for me. Everything I did last year with Frankfurt I can toss out the window, because now the challenge will be even bigger than last season. Alba Berlin will have even a deeper team and my style will be different. With more scorers on the team, I may not be depended to score as much.

Why is it so important for Dashaun Wood to play for Gordon Herbert?

Coach Herbert has great qualities. He is a great motivator. He was able to get guys like Kimmo Muurinen and Dominik Bahiense De Mello to play better than what they actually thought they were capable to do on the court. Herbert is as competitive as me. We just both want to win very bad and that is why we fit together so well. There are no limits for him to how far he will go to win.

Back in the day Karl Malone and John Stockton played 17 years together with the Utah Jazz. It seemed like where ever one went the other followed. Do you see having a long working relationship with Gordon Herbert?

I think that it could happen. we have a lot to prove. We had a great season with The Deutsche Bank Skyliners, but the expectations are even higher now in Berlin to reach our goals. I think that we can have  a long term basketball relationship, but we have much work ahead of us. But we are a long way from reaching the goals. We need to perform well in the next two seasons.

Will you be disappointed if you are not as dominant with Alba Berlin on the court as you were with The Deutsche Bank Skyliners?

No I wont be disappointed. Being MVP, leading scorer or top assist man in 2012 wont be on my mind. If those were my plans then I could of stayed in Frankfurt. My number one goal is to win titles and if that means me averaging 5 points and five assists to get there, I will be ok with it. My focus is just on winning.

What are your goals for Alba Berlin on the court besides winning titles in the next two years?

My leadership and defense.

With what Alba Berlin player are you looking forward most to playing with?

Thats not hard. I am looking forward to playing the most with Derrick Allen. He plays as hard as me and the only difference is that we have different positions. We have the same attitude and drive to win games and are both looking for that first title in Germany. I like players like D.A who dive for loose balls and strive to win quarters.

Will you prepared for a boo concert when you return to the Ballsporthalle?

Yes I will be ready for it, but the game of basketball is about cheering for your team. I expect it and that is part of the game. I remember the boos in Berlin during the playoffs. I don´t think that boos in Frankfurt will be because the fans hate me, but more because they want to see the Skyliners win.

What was your fondest memory during your one season with The Deutsche Bank Skyliners?

I had many nice memories. If I had to pick one it would be the fan support. The Skyliner fans made me feel like part of the Skyliner family. I will never forget last season. It wasn´t just the team fighting to win games, but also the fans went through thick and thin. The fans helped push us through the season. I really felt very accepted by the fans and want to thank them.

Are you surprised that ex NBA player Roger Powell retired?

I think that many professional players started young with 6 or 7 years. Roger is 28 or 29 years old so it means that he has had about 20 years of basketball. He has a new baby and his focus is on his family. He had a great career and should not hang his head.

How will he do as an assistant coach in the NCAA for the Valparaiso Crusaders?

He will do great as a coach. He played at many different levels in college and the pros. He has much experience and knowledge about the game of basketball. He is a great person and will give his knowledge to the youngsters.

What do you want to say to the Skybembel fans?

I am thankful for all the support. I won the MVP award, but I think that it is not only mine, but also belongs to the fans. The fans started the MVP talk, had the signs and really pushed me to perform. My MVP trophy will always be part of the fans. I will never forget the fans. When I committed to Alba Berlin, a part of my heart stayed in Frankfurt.

The NBA just announced the lockout. What was your first thought about the lockout?

No one knows how long it will take, but I think that many players will come to Europe which will make the leagues better. I think that no one will waste time to getting over here, because they want to play.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

Hangover 2. I thought it was real good.

Thanks Dashaun for the chat. Good luck with Alba Berlin

  2. I partly agree with Horst.
I really like to read some stats, but sometimes it is just too much.
A small suggestion: How about just mentioning the stats of the last season and the stats of the best season.
That’s how german magazine Five does it. Last season / best season /current season.

    I think this would help.
But whatever, Miles: Your interviews are great. Keep up the good work!

  3. Miles, its always a pleasure to read your articles on Eurobasket and here. I like all these details you know about the players. You really must be a true basketball fanatic to come up with all these informations!!!!
Thanks for sharing it with the readers.
