Joleik Schaffrath is a 21 year old 206cm center who played in the German Pro B for Herten last season. He started his basketball career in 2003 with the Oldenburger TB junior team. In 2005-2006, he spent a year in the United States playing high school basketball. In 2006-2007, he played for the Oldenburger TB team in the Regionaliga playing 16 games and averaging 9,5ppg. In 2007-2008, he played 21 games averaging 12,9ppg. In 2008-2009, he played his first season for Herten playing 27 games averaging 4.4ppg, 4.0rpg. In 2009-2010, he played 29 games averaging 10.9ppg, 6.9rpg, FGP: 56.0%, 3PT: 23.1%, FT: 61.5%. He took some time to talk to German Hoops about basketball.
What do you think when you hear the words „Quotendeutscher“ and „Banklehre“?
I talked to my agent about that many times but we never really took it serious. There is no reason for a player to be in the “quotendeutscher”-role on a team. A basketball player wants and has to play and that is exactly what we are searching for me. If this is not possible in the BBL then the next league for me will be the ProA.
What do you think about the Job as a Pro Basketballer?
It is a very nice Job especially for players who really love the game but it also asks for a lot. You have to compete every day in every practice and game. Every weekend people look at your stats and expect to see great numbers. If you are able and willing to take this pressure, it is the perfect job for you.
What is your daily routine during the summer?
After the season I took about 2 weeks off. In May I wanted to give some rest to my body but also I tried to avoid getting out of shape so I had about 4-5 light workouts a week. Beginning of June my summer workout will start. I will work out 7 or 8 times a week (basketball-drills, weightlifting, athletic, jogging). Also I plan to go to the States to visit a camp for a few weeks.
You have made big strides in your game. Last season you were averaging 4,4ppg and 4,0rpg and this year its 13,1ppg and 7,2rpg in 29 minutes per game. How do you explain your improvement in your game?
I got my chance to really play a lot and to show what I can really do. The year before I wasnt really satisfied with my role and my minutes on the team because I knew I was able to help the team with more than 15min, 4,4ppg and 4rpg. This season I showed that I was right.
You are a 206cm power forward. What goals do you still have as a player? Do you think that you have a realistic chance for the BEKO BBL?
For sure playing in the BEKO BBL is my goal and I am sure that I will reach that realistic goal. For sure I don’t want to be one of the German players who sits on the bench for the whole season. So I would rather sign with a PRO A team where I get playing time, can work a lot and improve, than wasting my time with watching my teammates play basketball. Even though I already talked to some BBL teams for next season right now I lean towards playing for a ProA team. Better many little than one too big step. I will be more satisfied if I PLAY in the BBL in two or three years instead of going there too early without playing time.
What do you still need to work on your game and who is your role model?
I need to work on my outside game. My focus for this summer will be to work on my three point shot and to improve my penetration to the basket. Also my footwork and quickness will be worked on. My role model would be Linas Kleiza/Olympiacos. He is a strong and various offense player and a great defender. He can help the team that he is playing for in many different areas of the game.
You started your basketball career with Oldenburger TB junior team. How did this experience help you the most?
The competitition in the NBBL was higher than in my junior time before. There were no blow outs anymore. Because of that you go into the games with a different focus and mentality which is important for young players to develop. In Oldenburg my Junior Coaches Stefan Himmelmann, Evangelos Kyritsis and later in the NBBL Thomas Glasauer gave me a good base to leave Oldenburg and play on a higher level than regional-league.
Why did you leave? Did you not want to waste time on the bench as other Germans have in Oldenburg?
By the time Herten offered me a contract, Oldenburg was not sure if they want me for the first team or only for the regional league. I didnt want to risk that Herten signs someone else so I made my decision early to sign with Herten.
What is it like playing with Ahmad Smith? Does he give you tips rebounding? He was averaging 8,7rpg as a guard?
Ahmad is a great player. He was the best player in the PRO B last year, definately deserved the PRO B MVP award and really helped us a lot to make the 2nd spot. He made a big difference in many games so we were also able to win the close ones. We won rebounding against most of our opponents which was a really important part of our success, too.
What would you like to do after your basketball career?
Right now I study business. I could not really imagine to do a job that has nothing to do with basketball but after my studies I might think different about it. My studies are based on online courses so it is perfectly combinable with playing basketball.
What was the last DVD that you saw?
Entourage season 5
Thanks Joleik for the chat.
