Jacob Gilyard Focused Too Much On Comparing Himself To Other Players In The States While Now Is Focusing On Playing His Best and Helping The Niners Win

Jacob Gilyard (175-PG-1998, college: Richmond) is a 25 year old 175cm point guard from Kansas City Missouri playing his third professional season and first overseas with easy Credit BBL team Niners Chemnitz. He began the season with the Cleveland Charge (NBA G League) averaging 8.1ppg, 2.4rpg, 6.5apg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 40.9%, 3FGP: 34.7%, FT: 72.2%. Last season he split time with the Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets and with G-League teams Memphis Hustle and the Long Island Nets. He played his rookie season with the Memphis Hustle (NBA G League averaging 8.8ppg, 3.0rpg, Assists-1 (8.8apg), 1.8spg, FGP: 55.1%, 3PT: 37.1%, FT: 90.2%. He began his basketball career at Barstow High School and then played at the University Of Richmond (NCAA) from 2017-2022 playing a total of 154 games. He spoke to germanhoops.com after the 70-65 win in Frankfurt

Thanks Jacob for talking to germanhoops.com. Congrats on the massive win in Frankfurt. What did it feel like playing in the Frankfurt arena? Was that a great atmosphere or what?

It was exciting. I think it was the biggest arena I’ve played in since coming to Europe so it was great. The fans and the energy were good and of course our Chemnitz fans do a great job of traveling!

How good is it always to win when the team didn´t play it´s best?

It’s great to get wins like that. Just to reassure ourselves how resilient we are. Games like that can go either way, and in such an important time of the season, it is important to make sure those fall into the Win column.

The game was dead locked at 35-35 at the break. What was giving the Niners the biggest problems on defense? It seemed like Frankfurt were finding their spots well and getting the bigs into good position down low?

We didn’t shoot well at all. I think not having played in 2 weeks made us a little rusty. But Frankfurt did a good job of getting second chance points and keeping them alive when we would look to pull away. I think they did a good job of slowing our pace down. It didn’t feel like we had a lot of opportunities to get out and run, sort of keeping us stagnant.

Kevin Yebo gave the Niners big energy in the second quarter. What do you appreciate most about his game?

Kev is just a gamer. It’s hard to explain how difficult he is to guard. He constantly keeps the defense on their toes and he helps us all around. I think I appreciate how much fun he has out there and how much passion he plays with.

In the third quarter the Skyliners went on a huge 13-0 run. How much did the ejection of Kevin Yebo spark them at that moment?

I think Kevin getting ejected helped them but I think the game just slowed down for them. They got a lot of free throws and easy buckets during that run, and we could not find any rhythm on the offensive end.

Skyliners Garai Zeeb told me after the game that the ejection also may have benefited the Niners in that they were more motivated to win for Kevin. Do you agree?

We were motivated to win because we need to win games against teams that we are “supposed to beat.” Our schedule is about to ramp up and we need to make sure we are taking care of business. But with Kevin going out, we felt like we had more to prove.

Walking bucket Malik Parsons had 23 points. The guy is so shifty. What do you have to do on defense to be successful against him?

He’s a tough cover. I think a lot of his buckets were tough ones that he earned. But, we just tried to make it as tough as we could on him. I think the few possessions I defended him and was successful was because I was just a different look than what he had been seeing all game. But it takes a team effort to contain anybody. All five guys need to be aware of where he is.

What did head coach Rodrigo Pastore tell the team to do better in the fourth quarter? It worked because you went on a huge run to gain momentum.

Coach just told us to trust each other. He felt like we were playing a little too much iso ball the entire game and when we got the ball moving from side to side we were successful. We ran a couple of different actions we had not been using earlier in the game which gave us a little bit of boost down the stretch.

Jeff Garrett was huge in crunch-time with 5 baskets including a big trey. How special of a teammate is he for the Niners?

Jeff was huge for us. That’s our spark right there. Always bringing physicality and energy. Obviously he brings a lot on the court; shooting, rebounding, defending. But he’s one of lthe eaders we kind of look to when things may be going well, he is always talking and being a voice out there for us no matter what.

You hit a big shot in the corner. How good did that shot feel? That put a second dagger through Frankfurt´s heart after Garrett´s three pointer.

Anytime there’s a big moment I always want the ball in my hands to make a play. This time the play just ended up being a shot for me. But it was a big shot for sure, one of those that if it didn’t go in, I’m not sure how the final 30 seconds would have played out. So glad it went in

What was key in crunch-time for getting the win? Did the Niners want it more?

I’m not sure if we wanted it more. I think we were just more comfortable down the sketch. I think we finally had that sense of urgency in the fourth quarter. But I think we just executed what we wanted to get to and took advantage of some of that switching defense Frankfurt used.

Your playing your first season overseas in Germany with BBL team Niners Chemnitz. What kind of an experience has it been and what have you enjoyed most about it?

It has been a great experience overall. I’ve got great teammates and people around me here in Chemnitz. They’ve welcomed me right away and it’s been really fun to start in such a good league with a good team. I think personally I’ve enjoyed getting to just focus on basketball again. While I was in the United States I think I got overly focused on the next contract or the rotations and comparing myself to other players and since coming here I’ve gotten to just focus on playing my best and helping this team win.

You have come to a winning program. What is so special about this team and can it make a run in the playoffs?

This team is complete in my opinion. We have all the pieces and have the depth to do something special. I think we still haven’t had a game where we are clicking on all cylinders. But I think with the depth that we have, it will show up even more in a playoff series.

You couldn´t have gotten a better first head coach overseas than Rodrigo Pastore. What have you enjoyed most about his basketball philosophy?

Coach is great. He’s really helped me adjust to European basketball and instilled a lot of confidence in me. I think what I like most is that the system is not just for one person. He calls it “equal opportunity” offense. So we just emphasize sharing the ball and making the right play and I think that’s what will make us so dangerous because you have different players making plays each time down the court. But coach is just constantly trying to get better himself which in return makes us better.

You also couldn´t have gotten a better teammate than Deandre Lansdowne? How important has he been in the early going for you getting better adjusted to overseas basketball?

Dre has been a great vet. He’s been extremely helpful not only to me, but this team. Just has a lot of basketball experience and sees the game from a lens full of knowledge. I think we complement each other really well on the court and are always on the same page. But Dre just makes the game simple for everyone.

You have adjusted well to the BBL in the last 3 games. What has been the biggest adjustment coming from the G-League?

I think just getting settled into what we want to do offensively and defensively. I feel like I’ve always been able to pick things up quickly and adjust to whatever needs to be done. But I think the biggest two adjustments are the defensive physicality and the no defense 3 second rule. But also, the court having a little less space making angles and plays a little more difficult to adjust to.

What is your biggest priority to improve most on your game as you continue to play overseas?

I think the biggest thing for me is continuing to get paint touches and be relentless going to the rim. Whether that’s to finish or make a play for somebody else. Then on defense I just want to continue to make guys uncomfortable and set the tone for our defense with my pressure and let that allow guys to follow my lead.

Thanks Jacob for the chat

A Late Run Propels The Eisbaeren Bremerhaven To 92-83 Victory Over the EPG Guardians Koblenz

The EPG Guardians continue to hang on a very thin thread in the Pro A standings as only 1 victory separates them from maintaining one of the last spots to move down for next seasons as only Artland is worse. After a tough loss to Phoenix Hagen where the Guardians zone caved in on them in the third quarter, they were back at it in their own living room only 48 hours later. It didn´t get any easier with the 18-11 Eisbaeren Bremerhaven who were resting in 5th place and fighting for home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. They are a team that is striving to get back to the easyCredit BBL and always have competitive teams. They arrived in Koblenz having won 3 of their last 4 games, but had suffered a brutal 63-62 loss to KIrchheim at home last weekend. It was another do or die game for Koblenz as they were hoping to finally win again as their 1-13 record in 2025 was nothing to be proud of. The EPG Guardians Koblenz Hung with Bremerhaven all the way to crunch-time, but there allowed a lethal 8-0 run as the guests sealed the deal 92-83. “It wasn´t a great game by us, but we got the job done. We knew that they would eventually get tired. We picked up our game in the second half. We stuck together as a team well. They had their runs, but it was just a matter of time before we had the better run”, warned Eisbaeren Bremerhaven forward Carlos Carter (197-G/F-1999, college: Shippensburg). The EPG Guardians defended well in the first half, but in the second half allowed way to many three´s and in crunch-time just couldn´t get consecutive stops. “We overall played a good game, but we gave up way to many offensive rebounds. We fought until the end, but second chances hurt us the most”, stressed EPG Guardians guard Jakob Hanazlek.

Anzac Rissetto at the FT line

The Eisaberen Bremerhaven didn´t waste any time getting going as they led quickly 9-2. The guests pushed the ball inside as ex The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (NCAA) (NCAA) big man Anzac Rissetto scored 3 times and ex BBL player Adrian Breitlauch hit a trey. The Guardians were totally unconcentrated and just way to hectic in their offensive sets. They finally settled down and began to claw themselves back into the game going on a 10-4 run to trail only 13-12. In the run the EPG Guardians lived off individual plays as David Bohm scored inside and American Michael Bradley connected on a pull up jumper and young French talent Alexandre Bouzidi dropped a trey. It was a game of runs as Bremerhaven struck back with a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 22-14. The guests received some instant energy from ex Montana State University Billings (NCAA2) forward Zharon Richmond who added 5 points and Breitlach hit another trey. Koblenz had problems with the great Bremerhaven team play, but punched back one more time as they ended the first quarter with a strong 5-0 run as Bouzidi connected for his second three pointer and Georgia native Ty Cockfield conquered the paint area as usual with his drive with a lay in. The EPG Guardians Koblenz were in striking distance trailing only 22-19. “We weren´t consistent enough on the defensive end. They got a few runs which gave them a little momentum at the end”, said Carlos Carter.

David Bohm at the FT line

The second quarter was the strongest defensive quarter as only a total of 28 points was given up, but the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven still had the slim 37-34 advantage at the break. The Eisbaeren Bremerhaven always punched first with the Guardians finding an answer. The Eisbaeren got some three´s from Swiss army knife Carlos Carter and ex Shippensburg University (NCAA2) sniper Jake Biss for the 30-24 advantage, but the Guardians remained strong on offense finding ways to execute as Cockfield and Canadian Ben Stevens scored inside as the guests led 32-30. The EPG Guardians Koblenz were defending a lot better sticking to their game plan of taking away Bremerhaven´s team play and forcing them to individual plays. They didn´t only do that, but they forced them to really tough shots. In the last few minutes, the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven got some fortune getting 2 easy buckets as Biss hit another three pointer and talented young German Peter Hemschmeier who played 1 Fiba Europe Cup game for BG Goettingen and once averaged 30,7ppg in a season in the NBBL made a 20 footer for the 37-30 lead. The EPG Guardians Koblenz didn´t let down their guard as they punched back one more time closing out the second quarter with a 4-0 run as ex University of Alabama at Birmingham (NCAA) forward William Lee made a lay in and David Bohm made an old school hook shot. “We didn´t take them lightly. They fought hard. We had some mis reads and didn´t play our game of playing together. That helped them stay with us”, added Carlos Carter. The Eisbaeren Bremerhaven shot 47% from the field and 38% from outside and had 22 rebounds and 9 turnovers while the EPG Guardians Koblenz shot 36% from the field and 30% from outside and had 17 rebounds and 3 turnovers.

William Lee with the runner

The third quarter was the highest scoring quarter of the game as both teams combined for 56 points as both teams found their offensive rhythm, but after 30 minutes the EPG Guardians Koblenz still couldn´t get over the hump and trailed 67-60. Walking bucket Ty Cockfield really got going as his slick dribbling and pretty cross over moves was giving Bremerhaven fits as he scored 3 times, but Koblenz still trailed 44-42. Both teams then traded three´s twice as Bremerhaven got baskets from Hemschmeier and Carter while the Guardians got buckets from ex BBL player Leon Friderici and William Lee as Koblenz trailed 50-48. The Eisbaeren Bremerhaven had finally found their game and it continued as this crazy unselfishness was in full swing as great ball movement and the extra pass led to a trey by ex PS Karlsruhe guard Daniel Norl while Richmond made 2 more three´s as the guests led 61-53. In this phase, the Guardians received incredible support from their bench as Hanzalek hit treys and played excellent defense to help his team trail only 61-57. “I´m getting a lot of trust from coach and my self confidence is high. I try to help by letting Johnson and Friderici get some rest so when they come back in can perform at a high level. I don´t hesitate anymore. I feel like a real shooter this season”, warned Jacob Hanzalek. Bremerhaven continued to execute well getting the first bucket in the game from their season leading scorer Elijah Miller and another trey from Mr reliable Adrian Breitenlauch to lead 67-57. Dominique Johnson then closed out the third quarter with a massive offensive rebound and acrobatic three pointer to produce some bedlam in the EPG arena. “Coach Esterkamp told us to pick up our game. We got back to playing our game which is team ball. We knew that if we played out style, we would hit shots again”, commented Carlos Carter. “Little things hurt us like bad calls and offensive rebounds that we allowed. I felt like our defensive pressure was good, but they still hit three´s “, expressed Jakob Hanzalek.

Hendrik Warner at the FT line

The fourth quarter was a real dogfight as the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven always had their heads slightly ahead, but in crunch-time, the EPG Guardians allowed that last run that broke their necks. The EPG Guardians began quickly getting key three´s from Johnson and Carter, but couldn´t gain any ground as ex Paderborn American Carlos Carter remained aggressive making a lay in and dunk as Bremerhaven led 71-66. Bremerhaven kept punching getting free throws from Hemschmeier and a trey from Richmond, but the Guardians countered with back to back baskets from Bouzidi as the Eisbaeren just couldn´t shake the Guardians leading only 76-73. Both teams then went on mini 5-0 runs as Bremerhaven began with a three pointer by Hemschmeier which was benefited from an offensive rebound and a thunderous Carter dunk, while the Guardians got a huge trey from Johnson and a lay in by Cockfield to trail only 81-78. But then came the turning point of the game as the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven was as cold as ice going on a ruthless 8-0 run to extend their lead 90-78 and decide the game in their favor. Bremerhaven stepped up their defensive intensity one more level as the Guardians were tired and were aggressive on the glass. Ex Alba Berlin youth player Hendrik Warner who had been relatively quiet in the game saved his best for last with 6 points while Breitenlauch made an offensive rebound and put back. Friderici added a trey and Johnson a lay in in the last minute, but it was too little too late. Bremerhaven showed that any guy can step up this season at anytime with Warner. “We knew that they would get tired. We knew that if we continued to stay focused on our game that we could be successful. We punched last. We made good stops and made our shots”, said Carlos Carter. “It was the little things that cost us the game at the end. We weren´t as focused mentally and gave up offensive rebounds which hurt us the most”, added Jakob Hanzalek. The Eisbaeren Bremerhaven had 5 guys score in double figures led by Anzac Risseto and Peter Hemschmeier who scored 15 points a piece while Carlos Carter added 14 points while the EPG Guardians Koblenz were led by Ty Cockfield and Dominque Johnson who combined for 18 points a piece. The Eisbaeren Bremerhaven shot 55% from the field and 45% from the three point line and had 42 rebounds and 19 turnovers while the EPG Guardians Koblenz who 42% from the field and 40% from the three point line and had 29 rebounds and 7 turnovers.

He spoke to germanhoops.com after the massive 104-97 win against BBC Coburg.

Congrats on the massive 104-97 win over Coburg. How good did it feel sweeping the season series against Coburg?

Thank you Miles, it feels great being able to sweep the season series and get another win on the year. We’re trying to finish the regular season strong and not only get into the playoffs, but get as good as of a seed as possible.

After only allowing 72 points last week in Frankfurt, what was the goal defensively going into the game?

Our goal was to continue to build on the performance we had in Frankfurt. We had a great showing there, but we knew how important it would be for us as a team to string back to back solid performances.

The first quarter was a scoring explosion with 58 points, but the Dragons had the 31-27 advantage. How vital is it for the Dragons to try to get away from these shoot out type of quarters?

It’s extremely important Miles, we don’t want to play that brand of basketball. We want to set the tone defensively by playing great team defense and rebounding at a high level, then having that transition into us playing together on offense.

BBC Coburg had a rapid start, but how important was the alley-oop dunk from Danas Kazakevicius? Did that give the Dragons the needed energy at that time?

Yeah it’s always great to start a game that way offensively! Get the crowd and the team into the game immediately from an energy standpoint.

The Dragons then had a big run to lead 29-19, but BBC Coburg punched back with a 8-2 run to trail only 31-27. What was difficult for the Dragons being able slow down BBC Coburg better?

They’re a good team, they came into the game playing very confident and wanted to win this game badly. Coburg was crashing the offensive glass, getting into the paint, and executing the pick and roll at a high level. We knew that Coburg wasn’t going to just give us the game, we had to go out there and take it.

In the second quarter the Dragons Rhondorf got a healthy lead and led by as much as 17 points and led 59-43 at the break. What adjustment did the Dragons make on the defensive end?

We started playing better pick and roll defense and limited their second chance opportunities. Our energy also picked up considerebly and when we’re flying around like that, the sky is the limit for us.

In the third quarter BBC Coburg fought back scoring 26 points and trailed only 79-69. Down the stretch Tobias Rotegaard hit 2 three’s. What made it so difficult to contain him?

They were setting pin downs and staggers for him all quarter. It seemed every single play was designed for him to come off 1 or 2 screens and get to his spots. He moves well without the ball and can shoot. It’s one thing guarding a guy like that, but when his teammates are focused on getting him open and getting the ball as well, it can be a tough cover.

BBC Coburg continued to fight in the fourth quarter and the Dragons couldn’t shake them. How vital was it for the Dragons showing that special offensive consistency early on to keep the comfortable lead?

We knew it was extremely important Miles. When we played them earlier in the year, we had a huge lead going into the fourth quarter but our offensive consistency dipped due to them going into a zone. We knew that we had to sustain our level on consistency both offensively and defensively for 40 minutes. Also, us having that prior experience, we knew they would be going into a zone in the second half and we were prepared for it.

BBC Coburg kept fighting and got another three pointer down the stretch, but it wasn’t enough. What was key in crunch-time for getting the win?

We just continued to play our game Miles and execute our game plan. We didn’t panic or get nervous, we knew what we needed to do to close the game out and did just that.

There were many great baskets in the game. What was your favorite basket of the game?

My favorite basket of the game probably would have to be the alley-oop to Danas to start the game! I can’t even remember the last time I’ve played in a game where we started out like that. Definitely games where we started out with a dunk, but never an alley-oop!

The Dragons Rhondorf won the rebound duel, had better shooting percentages and had 29 assists. What was the team’s biggest strength on the night?

Definitely our depth and sharing the ball. When we share the ball like that, it’s very tough to guard let alone scout. Everyone came in the game playing confident and aggressive, while also playing together and sharing the basketball.

The Dragons Rhondorf have won 3 of their last 4 games. Is it slowly getting it’s playoff form?

Yes, I believe we are Miles. We’re starting to come together as a team on and off the court. We’re playing together and trusting each other more, if we continue to build on this we’ll be in a great spot going into the playoffs.

Next week a must win situation in Ludwigsburg. How big will be the revenge factor after the 91-86 loss at home?

It’s huge Miles, every game is a must win from here until the end of the regular season. It’s only 3 games left, and we want to win every single game regardless of the opponent.

What will the Dragons Rhondorf will be working on most this week in practice concerning the defensive end?

For us to continue to be in the right spots on the floor. We need to realize when to shrink the floor and not allow guys to get paint touches. Whether that come from 1 on 1 or pick and roll scenarios.

How great is it seeing the awakening of Tim Smith Jr? He is finding his form of the early season. Could he be the difference of making the playoffs or not?

Tim has never went anywhere Miles. I said it to start the season, he’s such a great player and I can’t emphasize that enough. His skillset, size, shooting ability, defensive ability, he’s a true X-Factor that can help us not only get into the playoffs, but make a deep playoff run!

Antonio Pilipovic scored the 100th point. Does he have to get donuts?

Come on now Miles, you know that! AP! We need that Dunkin Donuts’ this week please and thank you!

Thanks Kelvin for the chat.

The Miles Vs Malik Riddle Weekly Basketball Chat Volume 18

Malik Riddle (193-G-1999, college: HSU) is a 24 year old 193cm guard from Tennessee playing his second professional season and first in Germany with Pro B team RheinStars Cologne. Last season he played with Gzira Athleta Birkirkara (Malta-BOV League D1) averaging 28.8ppg, 9.4rpg, 3.9apg, Steals-3 (2.6spg), FGP: 57.8%, 3PT: 33.1%, FT: 75.5%. He began his basketball career at Rossville Christian Academy. He then played 2 seasons at Morehead State University (NCAA) and then played 3 seasons at Henderson State University (NCAA2). He teams up with germanhoops.com every week to talk basketball.

Congrats on the 88-65 win over FC Munich 2. You didn´t play? Was your DNP on account of a safety measure? Did something flair up from the last game where you did play?

Unfortunately my injury has gotten worse so I will be out.

How big was getting this win? You had lost 3 of the last 4 games coming in, but didn´t play bad basketball, but lost 3 tight games by only 9 points combined.

It was a very much needed win we dropped a few games that we shouldn’t have and this win helped a lot.

In the second half the RheinStars didn´t score as much anymore, but didn´t let up on the defensive end. Was this defensive performance how the team wants to defend during the playoffs?

Yes we have to get back to our defensive identity. We want to be more aggressive on the defensive end and just continue that intensity into the playoffs.

The RheinStars have their share of young players, but how much of a role did the vast experience of the RheinStars play?

Yeah we have some young’s guys but also have some guys who’ve been playing for some years on this type level. So we know what we have to do to win and to compete for championship.

The RheinStars have 4 games left. How big is the desire to get that #1 position?

I think our main focus right now is to just win these four games and seeding will take care of itself I try not to focus too much on the 1 seed.

You next play the Lowen. You have revenge thoughts as they beat you 93-92 in your living room. What will be key to getting the win?

Yeah I know we most definitely want to get back at them from the last game. We have to continue the aggressive defensive mindset I think that will be the big key for it all

Thanks Malik for the chat.

The C&C Duo Of Carter And Cooks In The Fourth Help Lead Science City Jena To 92-80 Victory Over The EPG Guardians Koblenz

The fight to stay in the Pro A continues to thicken as the EPG Guardians Koblenz are right in the middle of it battling Duesseldorf and the Artland Dragons for that last spot in the Pro A. Despite a coaching change recently, the EPG Guardians Koblenz weren´t able to get that first victory as they lost a brutal game in Nurnberg by only 3 points. The fight to stay in the pro A didn´t get any easier as they had to face top team Jena who they had been crushed by more than 50 points earlier this season. The only good news was that now they could try their luck in their own living room. Jena is an incredible team coached by the eccentric Bjoern Harmsen and has a deep roster that lead the Pro A in rebounding and assists and only allowed 73 points per game. Jena is a team that could defeat numerous easyCredit BBL teams. On a cool late winter night, the 1-9 Guardians in 2025 wanted to achieve the spectacular upset over #1 team Science City Jena, but they came close staying with them for three quarters, but in the fourth quarter, they couldn´t handle the C&C duo of Carter and Cooks who combined for 15 of the 22 fourth quarter points to help their team win their 15th game in a row. “I feel like Koblenz scored too much in the 1st and third quarters. You have to give them credit that they really wanted to win. They were a different team from the first game. Even when they made their run, I´m very proud how we always stuck together. Even if we committed a lot of fouls, we gave our bodies to defense and wore them down in the fourth quarter. We proved that we are still the number #1 team”, stressed Science City Jena guard Chris Carter. The EPG Guardians Koblenz showed for a second consecutive game under new head coach Venelin Berov that they can play more free on offense and play good zone defense. Against top team Jena, they couldn´t get over the hump in the fourth quarter and control their penetration. “This game was a great challenge for us. We knew that we would have to play against their pressure. I´m really proud of how we stuck together. There is a reason why they are the #1 team. A big shout out to Stevens, Cockfield and Bohm for great games”. Warned EPG Guardians Koblenz forward William Lee.

Ben Stevens at the FT line

Science City Jena came out strong in the first quarter taking the rapid 6-0 lead as Carter and Christian made free throws and the latter then made an off balance shot. The guests were applying immense defensive pressure and Koblenz couldn´t handle the pressure. However Jena relaxed too soon becoming to sure of themselves as the EPG Guardians Koblenz smacked them with a brutal 19-4 run in their faces to take the commanding 19-10 lead. In the run Koblenz played refreshing inside out basketball as American Ty Cockfield led the charge with 6 points using his lethal mid range game to give Jena fits while American Ben Stevens was aggressive and took on responsibility for the absent big Moses Poelking with 4 points. Ex BBL player Leon Friderici added a trey and ultimate team player Dominique Johnson added 4 points. Jena lost concentration on offense and couldn´t hold their physicality which Koblenz took advantage of. Down the stretch, the EPG Guardians Koblenz continued to execute very well and continued to keep team first as many heads contributed. Friderici dropped another trey and Czech republic player David Bohm added 5 points. Science City Jena attacked the rim well getting baskets from American Zach Cooks, ex Vechta guard Chris Carter and ex Hagen forward Alex Herrera. At the end of one quarter, the EPG Guardians Koblenz had the surprising 29-19 advantage and had a few Guardian fans somewhat miffed at what had just occurred. “Jena lost concentration in our run. Their on ball defense wasn´t good, they couldn´t match our physicality and they couldn´t come terms with our zone”, said EPG Guardians Koblenz sport director Thomas Klein.

Ty Cockfield to the rim

Science City Jena stepped up their game in the second quarter exploding for 31 points, but couldn´t make any damage because the EPG Guardians Koblenz were able to execute just enough to only trail 50-48 at half-time. Science City Jena came out of the gates with a swift 9-0 run to trail Koblenz only at 29-28. The guests played their aggressive style of the first few minutes of the first quarter and totally stifled the Guardians offense that could get any rhythm going. In the run, the guests got good production from ex ratiopharm Ulm forward Raymar Morgan with 4 points while Herrera made another uncontested lay up and Carter snuck inside to grab the offensive rebound and put back. The EPG Guardians Koblenz got their groove and kept the lead as TY Cockfield took over making 4 points as did Stevens who made a great alley oop dunk off the perfect feed from French Player Alexandre Bouzidi while Friderici made another trey as Jena trailed 40-35. However Jena then stepped up their defense getting some stops which led to a 6-0 run as young German guard Raphael Falkenthal added 4 points and German Lorenz Bank dropped a trey for the 41-40 advantage. The game then went back and forth for the last few minutes as teams punched back and forth for 7 lead changes. Koblenz had no answer for Robin Christen (202-SF-1991) who was a menace adding 6 points as his inside out game sparkled while the Guardians got lay in´s from Cockfield and Bohm to trail 50-48 at the break. “We didn´t play the first few minutes of the second quarter like the first quarter and didn´t have that winning mentality. We didn´t play zone anymore. Jena got too many extra possessions off offensive rebounds and we couldn´t match their physicality anymore”, commented Thomas Klein.

Chris Carter from outside

In the third quarter both teams had a sloppy start and nobody could gain any real ground as no team led by more than 3 points. Stevens gave Koblenz good energy with a floater and being aggressive getting 3 free throws while Friderici made a lay in for the 55-52 Guardians advantage. The Guardians upped their defensive pressure and physicality better forcing Jena to tough shots and more misses. Koblenz remained strong keeping the slim lead and still executing well on offense as David Bohm was extra aggressive on this night not hesitating at all, but just scoring as he added 5 points for the 60-57 lead. However Jena had a very deep bench and got support from all as ex Frankfurt Skyliners Rasheed Moore went on his own 5-0 run with a trey and lay in as Koblenz trailed 62-60. However Bohm didn´t let up and usually had an answer as he added 5 more points and grabbed the lead back at 65-62. Jena would tie the game 2 more times with Carter and Christin baskets only to see the Guardians steal the lead back with buckets from Cockfield and Johnson. However Robin Christen had the last laugh in the third quarter as he dropped a trey for the 70-69 Jena advantage. Koblenz was playing horrible 1-1 defense on Christen as he was open one too many times on the evening. “We missed free throws and lay ups much more than normal. It was like a boxing match with many lead changes. We were the last man standing after that quarter”, stated Chris Carter. “Christin got it going. He saw a couple go in and then you feel like you can hit from anywhere. We showed that we would give up and lay down on our court. We fought and competed at a high level”, warned William Lee.

Zach Cooks at the FT line

In the fourth quarter Science City Jena showed a lot of heart and why they are the number #1 team in the Pro A by buckling down on defense and allowing only 11 points and let the C&C duo take care of business on the offensive end. Jena came out strong punching going on a 6-2 run to lead 76-71 getting a trey from Christen and a lay in from Cooks. Cockfield and Johnson found their spots scoring twice to keep the Guardians behind only at 78-75, but Science City Jena didn´t play around anymore closing the door on Koblenz with a lethal 14-5 run to end the game. In the run, it was the potent C&C guard duo of Carter and Cooks that added 10 of the 14 points in the run. Carter showed his vast experience finding his spots and just being smart and composed, while Cooks quickness totally hurt the Guardians. “I feel like I could play my game. I controlled the game and got to the free throw line”, warned Chris Carter. In the end, it was the C&C guard duo that combined for 15 of the fourth quarter 22 points of Jena. “It took a little while for Cooks to wake up, but he is the fastest guard in the league. I feel like they were a bit gased and we were in better shape. Our decision making was really good in the fourth quarter”, expressed Chris Carter. Koblenz kept fighting, but couldn´t contain Jena on the offensive glass and stop the penetration. “Their guards got in the paint way too many times. We never gave up, but just couldn´t get over the hump”, said William Lee. Science City Jena was led by Robin Christen with 24 points while Chris Carter added 17 points and Zach Cooks 15 points while the EPG Guardians Koblenz were led by David Bohm with 23 points while Ty Cockfield added 21 points and 8 dimes. Science City Jena shot 525 from the field and 35% from outside and had 34 rebounds and 11 turnovers while the EPG Guardians Koblenz shot 44Y% from the field and 32% from outside and had 34 rebounds and 11 turnovers.

Giving His Team More Energy Instead Of A Few More Baskets Against The MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg Was More Important For Garai Zeeb(Skyliners)

,Foto: Dmitrij Zibart | ZIBART

Garai Zeeb (187-PG-1997) is a 27 year old 187cm point guard that was born in Leimen, Germany and is playing his 5th season for the Frankfurt Skyliners. Last season he helped PS Karlsruhe win the Pro A title averaging 10.7ppg, 1.9rpg, 3.7apg, Steals-5 (1.7spg), FGP: 44.9%, 3PT: 30.3%, FT: 68.7%;He began his career with the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven and played his first easyCredit BBL game at 17 against FC Bayern Munich. He played parts of 7 seasons in the BBL with the Eisberen, Fraport Skyliners and Basketball Lowen Braunschweig amassing 107 games and also played 87 Pro B games. He also has played 108 Pro A games with the Romerstrom Gladiators and PS Karlsruhe. He spoke to germanhoops.com after the big 77-69 win ove rteh MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg.

Congrats Garai on the 77-69 win over the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg. How big was this win? You came off a 4 game losing streak in the easyCredit BBL?

This was a big win for us after a coaching change. It was good for the soul and helped us get some more distance away from BG Goettingen. We showed that we could win against a high quality team and showed that we could stick to our game plan.

The MHP Riesen had also been on a losing streak. Their Fiba Europe Cup season ended against Dijon. Do you feel like mentality that loss was still in their heads? They were a team that should have gone far in the competition.

Yes that could be. They also haven´t been playing their best basketball as of late and were also missing some guys. It was the perfect time to catch them on the wrong foot. We took advantage of that chance.

The MHP Riesen are a team that defend with passion, but offensively not a high scoring team. How proud were you with the team defensive performance keeping them to only 69 points?

I´m very proud how well we defended against them. We had a clear game plan. It is known that they aren´t the best three point shooting team. We took away the drive and tried to force them to shoot three´s. Even when they had good shooting phases, we never doubted our game plan, but stuck to it.

Ludwigsburg had a rapid start and Frankfurt didn´t get their first field goal until the 5,10 minute mark. Was the team still in thoughts of the Mallorca stay?

I wouldn´t say that. We did have a slow start, but so much more important that in the second half, we continued to stick to our game plan and execute well.

Frankfurt came back strong especially with your energy. You gave the team exactly what it needed. You don´t get more efficient than that in the first few minutes of a game do you?

Yes thank you. I could of made a lay up more, but I believe I was able to make an impact and help in deciding moments.

Is being aggressive for you as normal as swimming in the ocean?

Yes of course. I´m athletic, bring energy and am aggressive. One can always make mistakes or miss some shots, But I will always bring leadership, energy and my athleticism.

The MHP Riesen took control in the second quarter. How much did the Joel Scott alley oop dunk spark them in their run?

Yes it did. That dunk helped give them momentum. They did lead by 10 points, but we always fought back and later took the momentum back.

Frankfurt could have trailed in double figures at the break, but Jordan Theodore made back to back buckets as you trailed only 39-32. Do you personally have that sense of 100% comfort when he has the ball knowing he will deliver when the team needs it most?

Yes of course. He gave us stability in that moment. He is so experienced and always stays cool in those moments. He has been doing it his whole career and will keep doing it for us.

In the third quarter Ludwigsburg controlled the game, but Frankfurt always kept punching back. Marcus Domask gave valuable input in the second and third quarter. What do you appreciate most about his game?

Important for him was that he remained aggressive even after a tough start. Even when he risks something, he still plays with control. Even when he is playing 1-1, he remains under control.

The team continued to fight back and trailed only by 4 points after 30 minutes. How vital is it in general for the team to be successful when a Malik Parsons is being controlled well?

Being able to know that we can win games like this and Malik isn´t scoring a lot is good for our future. We showed that we stay together and support each other. We have other guys that step up and will help stay in the game.

In the fourth quarter the Patrick brothers were a one man show in the first minutes. It isn´t normal to see 2 sons and the dad as coach. How have you seen the development of the brothers over the years?

They have developed very well in the last years. They play very well in the minutes that they get. They are allowed to play in key moments of the game. They are always aggressive and allowed to make mistakes. They are always playing with full gas.

The game was dead locked 63-63 at the 5,37 minute mark. Frankfurt then closed out the game with a 16-6 run. Was that the best 5 minutes of play at the end of a game this season?

I would say so and if not then at least top 3 this season. We didn´t play mistake free, but we ended the game with control and didn´t risk anything or play totally foolish.

Do you believe that the back to back three´s by Parsons and Theodore broke Ludwigsburg´s back?

In a way yes even if it was still a 2 possesion game. Those three´s gave us momentum, confidence, and got the arena loud. They were tough shots, but we wanted to take them.

The team buckled down on defense in the last minutes. Was that defense that would have made a Gordon Herbert proud?

If you can win at the end, then any coach will be happy. The most important thing was that the win mace Klaus and the team happy. We held them to under 70 points.

Stat wise Frankfurt lost the turnovers and offensive rebounds. Where was the game won?

Winning the rebounds and forcing them to shoot the three was the key to the win.

You scored 8 points and had 2 rebounds in 19 minutes. How content were you with your game?

I´m happy that I was able to help the team. I could of done a few things better like hit a few more shots. But Being able to give my team energy was more important than making a few more baskets.

What was your favorite play of the game? Maybe the crazy Theodore three pointer in crunch-time?

I had 2 favorite plays. I enjoyed the offensive rebound from Marcus Domask off the missed free throw. Guards don’t usually make an offensive rebound in that situation. It was a crucial play. I also liked the three pointer by Kamaka Hepa. We got by the Ludwigsburg press and Klaus wanted a quick shot off the press. That play worked perfectly.

The Frankfurt Skyliners next battle ratiopharm Ulm. The next game is against ratiopharm Ulm. Will you win it for Booker Coplin or will he be back? There are rumors he may be back?

I don´t know anymore than you. I really have no idea. Of course we will play to win for Booker.

The first game was spectacular as you won it on a buzzer beater. What will be ´key to getting win?

We can´t allow Ulm to present a scoring fire work. They are a top team and we will have to be ready. They have many offensive weapons. We will have to find a way to slow them down. We want to give a defensive battle.

The team was in Mallorca for a week. What kind of a team was it going there and what kind of a team was it when it left?

It is hard to say after a short period of time. We came back and showed great will and fighting qualities against Ulm. We showed that we could win a tough game. We are more together now than before.

Has Klaus Perwas implemented anything drastically new to the overall game plan since the departure of Denis Wucherer?

We changed a few things. We changed our press break a bit and changed a few things in our offensive plays. We were better prepared against Ludwigsburg against the hand offs in comparison to the first game.

How did you like the dunk by Mac McClung at the 2025 NBA slam dunk contest. Where do you rate it all-time?

It is hard to say. It is hard to compare that to the legendary Aaron Gordon-Zach Levine contest. I would rank McClung´s dunk in the top 10 if not top5.

The Dallas Mavericks only have 8 guys. How crazy is their injury problems? Has the basketball God jinxed them?

They look bad now. It looked good having Kyrie and Davis together, but now they are out. You can´t control injuries. They were simply very unlucky. I think that they will be a strong team in the next 2-3 years. The Lakers won the Doncic trade.

Thanks Garai for the chat.

Kelvin Omojola And The Dragons Rhondorf Have Learned How To Act And Play Like A Playoff team Under Marko Zarkovic

Kelvin Omojola (183-G-1997, college: Northwest) is a 27year old 183cm point guard that is playing his fourth professional season and fourth in Germany and second with the Dragons Rhondorf helping them win the pro B title last season averaging 12.7ppg, 3.1rpg, Assists-2 (6.1apg), 1.6spg, FGP: 49.4%, 3PT: 30.5%, FT: 79.5%. In 2022-2023 he played with PS Karlsruhe (Pro A) averaging 3,1ppg and as a rookie played with the Ahorn Camp BIS Baskets Speyer (Germany-ProB) averaging 15.3ppg, 2.7rpg, 3.3apg, 1.7spg, FGP: 43.4%, 3PT: 37.3%, FT: 71.8%. He began his basketball career at Green Valley high school and then played at Red Deer (JUCO), Benedict College (NCAA2) averaging 9.1ppg, 2.1rpg, 1.2apg, 1.0spg, FGP: 38.6%, 3PT: 33.0%, FT: 66.7% and Northwest University (NAIA) averaging 7.4ppg, 1.9rpg, 1.7apg, FGP: 36.4%, 3PT: 36.1%, FT: 62.1% and 13.7ppg, 4.7rpg, 3.2apg, 1.3spg, FGP: 55.4%, 3PT: 54.2%, FT: 87.5%. He spoke to germanhoops.com after the massive 94-72 win in Frankfurt.

Congrats Kelvin on the big 94-72 win in Frankfurt. It was the first win in club history in Frankfurt. How good does it feel to achieve this?

It feels great Miles to make some history! Frankfurt is a tough place to play because every time I’ve played here, Frankfurt always shoots the ball well and plays at a high level. So it’s great to get this win.

How big was the revenge factor after losing the last 3 times to Frankfurt and on a Trevian Bell buzzer beater last season in Frankfurt?

Oh man the game winner last year hurt! The full court football pass and Trevian hitting the game winner over 2 people was crazy. But I’m glad we were able to win yesterday and this being my first win in Frankfurt in my career!

How big was this win for the team. Coming off a tough loss at home against Leitershofen last weekend. The team seemed 100% prepared.

It was huge Miles. We’re focused on getting into the playoffs by any means. We know every game matters and we need to get these wins. We were focused and ready to go.

Frankfurt Skyliner Junior Jamie Edoka said after the game that they weren’t ready to face the Dragons and not on the same page. Did the Dragons want it more than Frankfurt?

I would agree with that. On our end, we were communicating at a high level, playing great team defense, rebounding great, and moving the ball offensively. While on Frankfurt’s end, we did notice that they made some mental mistakes and had some defensive breakdowns. But still, they’re a tough team to beat because they have so many players that can hurt you.

The Dragons Rhondorf took control of the game from the second quarter onward and just managed the lead well. What did the Dragons Rhondorf do better on the defensive end to begin getting more consecutive stops?

We managed to get Frankfurt to take tough shots and not allow them to get any easy buckets. No dunks or moment plays so we were able to control the pace. Those moment plays can easily make the game get out of hand, so by us eliminating those it propelled us to keep playing our game.

In the second half the offense continued to be very consistent. Has anything changed with how the offensive works better now under new head coach Marko Zarkovic?

Yes, Coach Marko preaches ball sharing and player movement. He doesn’t want anyone playing hero ball, and it works for both offense and defense. Since he’s taken over, our defense has improved and our movement on offense has improved as well.

The team allowed only 72 points and gives up 89 points per game in this season. What did Marko Zarkovic changed up or made adjustments that has allowed the team to not only keep flying around on the court, but also grab rebounds better?

He holds everyone accountable but he’s not unreasonable with what he’s asking. So it’s very easy to play harder, smarter, together, etc. We know what our goal is (making the playoffs) so we know we have to play and act like a playoff team.

What have you enjoyed most about the coaching philosophy of Marko Zarkovic in the few weeks that you have known him?

Just his approach to the game. He has a lot of qualities that I share as well. Qualities from holding people accountable, playing together, playing smart, and his demeanor on and off the court. He’s serious on the court when he needs to be, but he’s also extremely likable and light hearted. It’s a great balance.

You next play Coburg who you beat in a grind out game 62-58. This is another do or die game for the Dragons.

Yes, we need this win Miles. 4 games left in the regular season, we need every win. We’re battling with them for playoff position so this game is of the upmost importance.

You stated the biggest strength of the Dragons Rhondorf was consistency and team? Is the team now 100% aware how vital these last games are for the playoffs?

Yes, we know how important these games are. We’re not taking any of them for granted and know what we have to do.

What was your impression of Jamie Edoka? He just turned 17 and is a starter in the Pro B. Could he be the next Isaac Bonga for Frankfurt?

He’s a nice young talent! He plays older than 17 which is a huge compliment, he has a ton of upside for sure.

What was your impression of Malik Kordel? He has played between 40-50 pro games and destroyed the Dragons in the first game with a 16/21 game. He has offers from Michigan, Butler and Villanova. How talented is he?

Yeah he’s another great young talent. It’s no surprise he has those high major D1 offers. He has high major size and athleticism, if he continues to improve his game and keep the work ethic, there’s no reason why he can’t get to the NBA.

Tim Smith Jr had another great game with 17/5/3 game and 2 blocks. He had some growing pains this season, but seems to be back to his old dominant self. Did you have some talks with him? He seems stable mentally again?

Yeah Tim and I talked a lot actually! We had some heart to heart conversations, been hanging out even more off the court. I think he’s doing better as well. I’m proud of Tim, he’s a great player and an even better person.

How big has Danas Kazakevicius been in the last months? Can one say that consistency has really rubbed off on him now?

He’s been improving all season, I’m proud of Danas! We need him for us to be at our best.

Janne Muller had another great game and was top scorer. He averaged 8,0ppg last season and 13,6ppg this season. Will this be his last pro B season as he will be a full BBL player next season? I can imagine one has to enjoy every Pro B game now?

I’m not sure Miles. I know Janne has a lot of talent and if this is his last ProB season I wouldn’t be surprised!

Kenan Reinhart also has developed well in the last 6 weeks. He had a great start in Frankfurt, but why did he only play 13 minutes?

Yes he has, Kenan is improving everyday. He’s another really good young talent. As for the Frankfurt game, I’m not sure. We have a lot of talented guys on the roster and it’s tough to get a lot minutes. I think the only one who consistently gets high minutes is Tim. So it’s just a matter of making the most of your opportunities while you’re out there.

Marko Rosic had a tough stretch before the Leitershofen game but since been great. Has he benefited from the new coach?

Yeah Marko has, but it has nothing to due with the coaching change. He’s a great player and he can make plays and control the game any time he wants.

He really stepped up in the last 2 games and put you a bit in the shadow. How important was that competitiveness in a team in a stage like now both for him and you?

Oh it’s huge, I love when Marko does well and balls out in the game. We push each other in practice and he knows I support him and have his back 1000%. I’m sure he feels the same way about me.

You had a tough game against Leitershofen with 5 turnovers and 4 in the first quarter. Was that first quarter one of the toughest in your career?

Yeah it was tough Miles! It was definitely one of the toughest of my career, but that’s how it is some games. I wasn’t going to be sad or upset about it, just had to bounce back and do whatever I can to help the team win.

You bounced back well in Frankfurt with 8 points and 8 rebounds and scored back to back buckets at the end of the third quarter. How much to heart are you taking efficiency when you’re playing less minutes?

Yeah Miles this season has been totally different than last year in all aspects, so I’m just adapting and making the most out of the situation. Whether I play 30 minutes or I play 10 minutes, I’m just trying to go out there and make an impact on the game. With the main goal being, help us get the W.

What is your biggest personal goal now in the last games besides giving all you have for the team?

From a team perspective, to get us into the playoffs and make a playoff run! For me personally, to end the season playing my best basketball.

Were the Dallas Mavericks jinxed this season? Dante Exum is out with a broken hand. They currently only have 8 players. How crazy is that?

Yeah that’s crazy Miles, that’s the basketball Gods punishing them for trading Luka. They shouldn’t have done that, but being a Laker fan I appreciate it lol.

Thanks Kelvin for the chat.

The Miles Vs Malik Riddle Weekly Basketball Chat Volume 17

The RheinStars Cologne suffered a tough 94-91 loss at Orange Academy. Was tis another good example of how tough the pro B South is?

Yeah I feel every team is capable of beating anyone. So really have to be disciplined and focus all 4 quarters.

The Rhein Stars had everything going well leading by 17 points at the break after scoring 28 points in the first quarter. Did they already make defensive adjustments in the second quarter to cut your team to only 15 points?

I think we missed a lot of easy baskets. Those really hurt us and we have to finish the easy ones.

Frederik Erichsen then hit a spectacular 3 to bring game into overtime. What made it so tough finding some consistency on the defensive end?

Rotations on defense wasn’t what it needed to be. It’s the second efforts that we have to get better at.

The RheinStars then began well in overtime, but then suddenly Orange Academy punched back going on a run as Jordan Mueller led the charge. What was key in overtime for Orange Academy getting the win?

They executed and made shots. While we missed some and took tough ones.

You played 27 minutes averaging 13/4/2/3. How did you feel coming off your injury?

It felt okay. I wasn’t in rhythm like I’m usually is but it was okay game for me.

The Rhein Stars now have to be careful not to slip to position 4 in the next weeks. The team will get home court advantage for the first round, but want to go on a run now to end regular season strong. The next game is against FC Bayern Munich where a must win is needed. What will be key to getting win?

We have to play strong on both ends of the court. We have to be the aggressor the whole 40 mins because they also are a young team but have talent.

Thanks Malik for the chat.

Playing A BBL Game Against The Giessen 46ers In The Gym Where He Fell In Love With The Game Was The Best Feeling For Moritz Schneider(BSW Sixers)

Moritz Schneider (191-PG-1999) is a 25 year old 191cm point guard that us playing his third season with the BSW Sixers Sandersdorf (Pro B). He began his basketball career with VFB Giessen and then played with Science City Jena playing JBBL, NBBL and for the Regionalliga team. He played 2 BBL and 2 Pro A games with Jena. He then played with Iserlohn (Pro B) from 2019-2022. He spoke to germanhoops.com about basketball.

Thanks Moritz for talking to germanhoops.com Your playing your third season with the BSW Sixers Sandersdorf. What kind of an experience has it been playing for this organization?

It is very special especially the special relationship to the fans is very rare. You seldom see that kind of fan support in the Pro B. Our fans go to all away games no matter how far away. Sandersdorf is very small, but the fascination for basketball is unique.

The team is having another great season after missing the playoffs last season. What is the secret to the success?

We have a collection of players that fit together well. We are also difficult to scout with our offense. Our players are all unique and our coach is always best prepared for every opponent.

How is the mind set going towards the playoffs? Can this team win a title?

We are going game by game. Our goal is to get past the first round of the playoffs.

On what areas of the game does the team have to tweak now to get the absolute best results in the post season?

We need to continue to win games. We have done a great job developing step by step the whole season. We are a totally different team now from the first Fiba break. The young players also have developed well. We have to keep moving forward.

What has it been like being teammates with Nike Salenieks. What have you been able to soak up most from his game?

He came from the Regionalliga. At first I didn´t know what to expect when he arrived. I remember playing against him last season and he didn´t stand out. But this season he has made a 180 degrees turn and totally exploded. He is one of the quickest and most athletic in the league. He has all the tools to be a great player in the Pro B. He is so hard to guard and always best prepared. I love playing with him.

Your leading the team in assists as your assists average has grown each season. How has your game especially your playmaking grown with the Sixers?

I have a bigger role this season than the last 2 seasons. I was always a pass first point guard my whole career. Head coach Lukas Vargas has done a great job to put me in the right position to be successful. I know what the strengths of my teammates are.

You have averaged 21-22 minutes a season which is considerably more than what you averaged in Iserlohn. What is your role on the team? Are you the classic back up point guard?

No, I´m captain of the team. I am a leader coming from the bench. I´m the second hand of the coach. He gives me a lot of freedom with play calling.

You were teammates for 2 seasons with Donte Nicholas. He is Mr triple double. What memories will you always have of him as a teammate?

Donte and I are close friends. He is still so difficult to guard even at age 38. He has such a high IQ and has great abilities. He is a complete player. I learned a lot from him and we harmonized well on the court. I learned so much about him about nutrition and stretching. I remember seeing him score 30 points. He is ice cold. He can fit with any team.

You played under Darren Stackhouse who was an assistant coach. Did he tell any Jerry Stackhouse stories?

No unfortunately not. He doesn´t coach us much since he is preoccupied more with the youth teams. I will have to ask him when I see him again.

What will you always remember from the 2023 Pro B playoffs? You beat Oberaching and Frankfurt and then lost to Koblenz?

I will never forget that first playoff game against Oberaching. We won by 40. The atmosphere was incredible. I remember winning in Frankfurt and dominating despite missing some key players. We played nice basketball. We then lost to Koblenz. That was like David vs Goliath. The difference in budgets was like night and day. That was the best season in our club history. Basketball was most fun that season.

After playing some years in Jena, you moved to Iserlohn in 2019 and played 3 seasons. After playing 2 BBL games, did you realize that having a BBL career would be tough?

I had torn my ACL in my last season in Jena. I knew that I would have no role in the Pro A as they were trying to move back up to the BBL. I was done with school and wanted to play Pro B. Iserlohn was the best fit.

You never averaged more than 2,5ppg with Iserlohn. How do you remember those years? Did you get a fair chance there?

I feel like I did get a fair chance. I had injury problems. I had just found my rhythm in my first season and Covid ended the season. Then a new coach came as well as Toni Prostran and I got less minutes.

You played 2 seasons with now Iserlohn head coach Toni Prostran. How do you remember those early years? What could you soak up from his game?

I learned 100% from Toni. I remember when I first saw him play, that he was small and not athletic. I didn´t think that he was better than me. The first few weeks, I dominated him, but he wasn´t in shape yet. But then he began to play and dominated me. I was his back up and learned how to read the game better and the pick and roll. He helped bring me to a new level.

You were teammates with Elias Marei for 3 years. How did you see his game grow?

Elias made big steps in Iserlohn. I remember that in the first season he was only a practice player. In the second season, he began to play games and in his third season got good minutes. I´m proud of his development. He is one of the hardest workers that I ever saw. He gives his all on the court and you can always rely on him. He is the ultimate team player. Even if he misses 2 three´s, he will still give is best. I´m happy how well his season is going with Leitershofen.

You played with Science City Jena from 2014-2018 from the youth to the BBL. What do you remember from this time. Was this some of the best times of your life?

Yes it was. Those years were amazing. I won the Pro A there in my first year. I couldn´t believe my luck when I heard that Immanuel Mcelroy would be my teammate. I also played with other great players like Wayne Bernard, and Guido Grunheid. I was coached by Bjoern Harmsen. He was such a clever coach. Later in my BBL year, I had more great players like Derrick Allen, Julius Jenkins and Dru Joyce.

In the 2015-2016 season you played 2 Pro A games and was teammates with Immanuel Mcelroy. How did you experience him as a 16 year old?

It was crazy to be teammates with him. I remember when I was a kid that my dad was a huge basketball fan. I remember seeing Giessen play Cologne in the playoffs in 2005. I saw Giessen win a game against Cologne. 10 years later I would become his teammate. His daughter was older than me. I also learned so much from him.

The 2017-2018 season must have been like a kid in a candy store. You were teammates with BBL legends Derrick Allen, Julius Jenkins, Dru Joyce, and Kyle Weaver. Which player had the biggest impact on you?

I don´t know where to start. Marcos Knight had a big impact on me as did Derrick Allen. Derrick was always the first to practice and last to leave. To see how hard he worked to age 40 was unbelievable. His will to win and work hard helped me grow as a competitor. He and all the rest of them always wanted to win every practice game.

You played 2 BBL games against Gotha and Giessen playing 4 minutes. What memories do you have of being on the court?

I was really excited to play in Gotha. It was derby game and 4000 fans were there. I remember when I came into the game in the first quarter, the fans chanted my name. We turned a 20 point deficit around and won the game. I remember playing against Daniel Schmidt. The game in Giessen was a big moment for me. It was the best feeling for me to play in the gym where I fell in love with basketball. I played against John Bryant. It is something that I will be able to tell my grand-children.

Who is the best player that you ever faced on a court that reached the NBA?

Deandre Ayton. I remember playing against him in Munich when I was with the Jena youth team. He was with an AAU team. It was crazy to see how athletic he already was for his age. Other tough players were John Bryant, Derrick Allen, Immanuel Mcelroy and Julius Jenkins.

Please name your 5 favorite teammates of all-time?

Donte Nicholas, Marco Rahn, Derrick Allen, Julius Jenkins, Immanuel Mcelroy.

What is your personal NBA, Euro and German mount rushmore of past or present point guards?

Rajon Rondo, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, Steph Curry

Milos Teodosic, Vassilis Spanoulis, Nick Calathes, Tony Parker

Dennis Schroeder, Heiko Schaffarzik, Per Guenther, Anton Gavel

Who is your GOAT?

Lebron James.

Thanks Moritz for the chat.

Tuukka Kotti Will Always Be Thankful For Gordon Herbert In Turning Around His Career And Getting Back To Working Hard And Focusing On The Right Things

One thing is for sure, I always knew that Gordon Herbert was an excellent coach. I mean I covered his Frankfurt Skyliners teams for more than a decade so I must know. I didn´t know in 2004 when he helped the Opel Skyliners win their first BBL title, but years later when he came back and continued to form winning Skyliner teams and help young Germans develop further, I knew that he was something special. That he became World champion coach in 2023 with Germany was no surprise to me. Herbert is a very special coach who simply knows how to develop team chemistry, let each player have a real special role and use it and most important helps players with the mental side. His players have come to appreciate his coaching ways the last 20 years. It is no surprise, that his name has often been mentioned in my interviews with his former players. Some of his former players remarks about him were so powerful that I used their words in my titles. I looked back in my article archive and found 6 players where I had Gordon Herbert in the title with guys like Mario Kasun, Justin Cobbs, Garai Zeeb, Jason Clark, Tyrone Ellis and Richard Williams. It wasn´t any different with his ex player Finish dinosaur Tuukka Kotti (205-PF-1981, college: Providence) who is 43 and still playing professionally in 2025. He played briefly for Herbert in 2009 before he returned to Frankfurt to take over for Murat Didin and lead the team to the 2010 final “I have always admired Gordie as a coach. He turned my career around in that half a season I was with him. He got me back to working hard and being focused on the right things. I will always be thankful for that. No surprise, that he has reached that level as coach”, stressed Tuukka Kotti. He has had such an amazing career that has spanned 20 years that if someone had told him in 2006, that he would still be playing, it would have been difficult to believe it. “Even in 2014 after the World Cup I thought I only had a couple more seasons left. 2006 it would have been hard to believe for sure. There is really no other job I would rather do so I have decided to play as long as I am able to compete at this level. I am really humbled and grateful that God has blessed me with such a long career. I have stayed healthy throughout most of my career. Hard work, enough sleep/rest, and balanced diet. It is a simple recipe”, said Tuukka Kotti.

Tuuka Kotti who names Troy Bell, Caron Butler, Chris Paul, Ben Gordon, and David Lee as his toughest opponents in the NCAA and in Europe Milos Teodosic and Keith Langford currently plays for Tapiolan Honka. He began his career with FoKopo and then played with the Salon Vilpas (Korisliiga) averaging 15.7ppg, 7.8rpg, 1.7apg in 2000. He is content that basketball has changed so much in the last 24 years. “The game was slower and tactically not as advanced as it is today. Coaching in Finland has developed a lot and it shows also in Korisliiga. In all areas I think. Biggest thing that stands out to me is the spacing of the game. Outside shooting has improved and teams are shooting more threes so it opens up the game more”, commented Tuukka Kotti. He went to the States in 2001 and played 4 years and 116 NCAA games for Providence College. He never averaged more than 10,0ppg in a season and as a senior played 31 games and averaged 9.9ppg, 5.8rpg, 3.0apg, 1.3spg, FGP: 41.5%, 3Pts: 30.3%. Back in those days, it was rare to see a Finish player play in the NCAA. “There were some players from Finland who had taken that route, for example Hanno Möttölä. Also playing in the US had for years been a dream of mine so it was an easy decision I did struggle my freshman year getting adjusted to the culture and the different style of play”, remembered Tuukka Kotti. There was a legend that he came to USA as a point guard and returned to Finland 4 years later as a center. Did he have extra Mcdonalds visits in those 4 years? Partly true, but the story has been exaggerated quite a bit over the years. I did play the different guard positions before college. Some PG as well. In college I was playing mostly in the wing and I developed in to a really good defensive player through those years. Defensively I was used in all positions but on offense I played more off ball than I was used to. I really moved closer to the basket when I turned pro and I had started to struggle with my outside shooting. That’s why teams wanted to play me first more at the 4 spot and eventually at the 5”, expressed Tuukka Kotti. He reached a NCAA tournament in 2004 and won´t forget it. “It was really fun! I had an opportunity to play against some really high level competition in the Big East. Also we practiced really hard which I enjoyed. And I got meet and build relationships with some people I cherish to this day. Were there things that I wish I would have worked on more or received more coaching with, absolutely. But overall, my college years were great. March madness was great, but it’s bitter sweet for me because we had an amazing season that year but got knocked out of the tournament in the first round”, added Tuukka Kotti.

The big man who lists Petri Virtanen, Shawn Huff, Chris Anrin, Maris Laksa, and David Gonzalvez as his best teammates of all-time had many incredible games in the NCAA including a 16/7/6 game in a win against Georgetown that had incredible guys like Rudy Gay, Charlie Villenueva, or Marcus Williams and in other games played against Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon. “That one was a big one. All the games against UConn were memorable. They had some amazing teams and we were usually able to get the best out of our team against them. One game that I always look back on was our game at Notre Dame at the end of my freshman year. I had not played a lot during that year, and having a big game there really gave me confidence going into my second season”, remembered Tuukka Kotti. He had amazing teammates who later came overseas with Marcus Douhit, John Linehan and Ryan Gomes, all guys he won´t ever forget. “Marcus was amazing. Great player and great personality. He was really a big key to our success covering the middle of our 2-3 zone. Had quite a few of my shots blocked by Marcus too in practice. John set the tone for sure. He was a senior when I came in and I was really influenced by his leadership and how hard he worked. I have never played with a better defender in my career. Ryan was the same class and it was such a privilege to see him develop and become a star. He was an amazing player and just like John, he put the work in. All the greats do”, warned Tuukka Kotti. He then returned to Europe and played his first 3 seasons in Italy with Ignis Castelletto Ticino (Italy-Lega 2) averaging 10/6 and 11/6 and Noi Sport Monte Terminillo Rieti (Italy-Serie A). “I fell in love with Italy right away. I have some great memories from there and would love to go back and visit soon. Basketball was really good. There were tons of talent in Serie A and LegaDue. Also, always loved the passion of the Italian basketball fans.”, said Tuukka Kotti, He reached the Serie A in his third season but only averaged 2,1ppg. It was tough breaking into the rotation with guys like Pape Sow and Wade Helliwell. “That was a difficult year for me. Playing behind those guys and Leroy Hurd, who had a monster season that year. I broke in the rotation and got big minutes after Pape Sow got sold to Poland. Unfortunately I broke my hand, pretty soon after and missed almost the rest of the season”, remembered Tuukka Kotti. The Serie A at that time was already showcasing amazing players and you could always have a wow effect with a player each weekend. “My team mate Morris Finley was amazing throughout the season. And also Gianmarco Pozzecco. I remember them beating us at our place and him coming to our locker room after the game shaking everyone’s hands. That took a lot of courage”, stressed Tuukka Kotti.

The Finish native who names Luka, MJ, Kobe, Lebron, and Jokic on his personal NBA Mount Rushmore then played a season with Etendard de Brest (France-ProB) averaging 10.0ppg, 6.9rpg, 2.0apg, FGP: 49.7%, 3PT: 25.0%, FT: 57.4%. “Pro B was very different from Lega Due. More up and down and athletic. Personally I had a difficult season there and didn’t play as well as I was capable of”, said Tuukka Kotti. He then played 2 seasons with the Honka Espoo Playboys (Korisliiga) averaging 12/9 and 16/10 winning 2 cups. “That second year our team was really good! One of the best that I have played in. We had size, great outside shooting and defensively we were really tough. After winning the cup we lost Coach Herbert for health reasons and Corey Belser left for Ukraine. After that the team wasn’t the same”, added Tuukka Kotti. He was teammates with so many interesting guys like Jamar Wilson, Carl Lindbom, Sasu Salin, Juka Matinean, and Tuomas Iisalo. Did he already notice that winning coach in Iisalo as something that could happen? “We had some great players for sure. Tuomas has always had a very curious and analytical personality. Also a real passion for the game. But yes, absolutely it has been surprising how far he has reached in such a short period of time. Amazing story. I am really proud of him”, stressed Tuukka Kotti. He then returned back to Italy for 3 seasons and played with Naturhouse Ferrara (Italy-Lega 2) averaging 10.9ppg, 6.9rpg, 1.7spg, FGP: 54.1%, FT: 43.5% and with Aget Service Imola (Italy-Lega 2) averaging 9.6ppg, 6.9rpg, 1.4spg, FGP: 57.5%, FT: 46.4% and with Vanoli Cremona (Italy-Serie A) averaging 6.0ppg, 5.6rpg, FGP: 61.0%, FT: 48.9%. He finally got more of a chance in the Serie A and was teammates with special player Shawn Huff who also played under Gordon Herbert. “It was great to be back in Italy those years and in Cremona had an opportunity to play against some amazing competition. Shawn and I are really close and the Cremona year is only a small part of everything we have experienced together. He is an amazing player and a person”, warned Tuukka Kotti. He then returned back to Finland in 2012 and never left again except for a season in Germany. He played 3 seasons with the Nilan Bisons Loimaa (Finland-Korisliiga) putting up consistent stats as always and having a stellar Eurocup season. Did you become home sick? “Not really. There was a great opportunity to play Eurocup in Loimaa, which is right next to my hometown Forssa, and I felt like that was great situation for me. It’s really hard to describe these three years. I have so many great memories and I loved my time at Loimaa. At the same time we played the last two years in the VTB-league on top of Korisliiga, which totaled to about 70 regular season games plus playoffs. Needless to say those years were very demanding mentally and physically. The tough competition in Eurocup, VTB and also Korisliiga did help me to develop and I feel those years matured me as a player quite a bit”, commented Tuukka Kotti. It was never boring in the season that Jacob Burtschi was his teammate. “I love Jake! He made our taxing season so much lighter with his personality. We were constantly competing with him. Half court shots, playing cards on the road. It was real good times”, remembered Tuukka Kotti.

For the ex Finish national player who lists Jesus Christ and Michael Jordan as his GOAT then played a season with the Crailsheim Merlins (Germany-ProA) averaging 9.6ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.6apg, FGP: 62.3%, FT: 70.8% and played for Tuomas Iisalo. One would have thought it was a no brainer to play there. “It wasn’t a no brainer at that point. I was actually on my way to Joensuun Kataja, but ended up eventually in Crailsheim. I would say Tuomas was still developing his identity as a coach at that point. While he was already a good coach, I could not have predicted him succeeding that fast. One thing I noticed and appreciate in Tuomas is that he really insists on the things he believes in. And he will always give you a reason why”, said Tuukka Kotti. He then played 5 seasons with the Helsinki Seagulls (Korisliiga) winning 3 cups. He had his best stat season in his first season and another good season followed. Had he reached his prime at age 36? “There is for sure some truth to that. I think I played some of my best basketball those years and also in Eurobasket 2017. I hope it can serve as an encouragement to other players, that one can still develop at a later stage of their career”, warned Tuukka Kotti. He played for the talented is Jussi Laakso as a coach. He didn´t follow in the foot steps of Iisalo in Crailsheim, but like him has a knack for finding guards off the radar like Trae Bell-Haynes and Kendale McCullum and helping them make the next step. “Jussi is a great coach and great leader. He did an amazing job recruiting and putting together some of those teams. Jussi is very humble and eager to learn more, and it’s been great to see how he builds winning cultures everywhere he goes”, warned Tuukka Kotti. He then played the last 2 years with Tapiolan Honka and won the league title last season and will play there a third season. It seemed like he continued to be reunited with Carl Lindbom. Will he end his career there? “It’s hard to make any promises at this point. It’s totally in God’s hands, but I would love to finish my career here. This is a great organization with some amazing people, and I’m grateful to be a part of it”, stated Tuukka Kotti. Not too forget, he has been a member of the Finish national team over the years. He has seen Finish basketball take on a massive development in this period. “It has been like night and day. When I started with the NT we had no clear direction and we were lacking confidence. In the last 20 years there has been a big culture change in our programs and also what’s changed is that we believe in ourselves. The coaching in Finland has developed a ton and both players and coaches are more valued now around the world. We have a bright future”, warned Tuukka Kotti. He played against USA at the 2014 World Cup and suffered a brutal 114-55 loss against USA where he had 6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and a block. The Finish team was pretty talented then with guys like Murphy, Koivisto,Koponen, Salo, Huff and himself while Team USA had superstars like had Curry, Irving, Rose, Davis and Harden just to name a few. There was not one USA player that stood out for him most. “That was the most memorable game of my career! 10K Finnish fans in the arena and going against some NBA greats. It was a dream come true. Only a few years before that we were dreaming to play in the Eurobasket and all of a sudden we are here. I told the guys after the game in our locker room, that I have never before enjoyed getting my butt kicked. Not one player, but in general how fast they played, and the talent combined with speed and athleticism. It was really impressive”, remembered Tuukka Kotti who didn´t see the sequel to the classic Coming To America as the original can´t be topped. He has seen it all in the last 20 years and will always have enough stories to tell all.
