Phillip Flowers (196-SF-1990, college: UWG) is a 34 year old 196cm small forward from Lauderdale, Florida and playing with the Bona Baskets Limburg (“ Regionalliga) this season. He has pro experience in Qatar, Brazil and in semi pro leagues in the States with teams Georgia Spartans (UBA) and the South Florida Gold (ABA). He played at : Eastern Florida State College (NJCAA) and the University of West Georgia (NCAA2). He spoke to germanhoops.com after a 65-57 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Thanks Philip for talking to germanhoops.com. Congrats on the big win over Eintracht Frankfurt. The guests are filled with 80% youth players. Did it feel like men playing with boys?

Yes it did feel like that. Sometimes I have to get myself mad just to motivate myself to play. I´m bigger and stronger than those guys. You have to keep it simple when you play against young guys.

What was the key for getting the win at home?

We didn´t find an offensive rhythm. Only one guy was at practice yesterday. But we did give an overall consistent defensive effort.

You last played 5 years ago in the ABA. How did you land in Limburg?

I met a former Limburg player through my job in Wiesbaden. I´m a contractor in Wiesbaden and work for the government. I got a try out and the rest is history.

You live and work in Wiesbaden. Is the Limburg gig more a hobby or do you still have aspirations of chasing the pro dream?

Of course I still want to get to the next level. I won´t be able to get to the top, because of my job though. But I feel capable of playing in the Pro B or Pro A.

Did you have a 9-5 job the last 5 years? Did you continue to work on your craft or was the professional route on the back burner?

I worked as a contractor for the US government in different countries the last years. I played in Qatar, Brazil and in China tournaments.

What kind of an experience has it been playing for the Bona Baskets Limburg? What have you enjoyed most about the experience?

It has been cool. I have gotten to know some of the guys. I´m proud to have been a mentor for some of the young kids and try to give them knowledge and help them get better. I really love how we always have access to the gym.

You aren´t the only veteran, but Elijah Allen is also here. What is it like sharing the court with him? Is one more the leader and the other have a different function?

I can be a vocal leader, but also leader with actions. Elijah is the same.

How enjoyable has it been being teammates with Justin Stallbohm? Isn´t his smile infectious?

His smile is very infectious especially when his shot is going in. I get a lot of assists from him. He is a good shooter and leader as our captain.

You played in countries like Brazil and Qatar, but was never in Europe before this season. What do you believe kept you away from Europe? Was it failed representation?

It wasn´t really failed representation, but he just didn´t have a network in Europe, but more in South America. I would have liked to have played here earlier in my career.

You played for the South Florida Gold (ABA) reaching the final. What memories do you have of this season? What was missing from getting that chip?

We just didn´t play very well as a team. It was a big moment and they just had more experience than us.

You played 2 seasons with Botafogo F.R. (Brazil-Liga Ouro) winning a chip. What was so special about this team that season?

We had a bunch of really good players. We had strong imports and a really good team. It wasn´t only great to win the title, but to contribute

You played your rookie season with the Georgia Spartans (UBA). What do you remember being your wake up call to being a rookie?

My wake up call was realizing I had to get stronger. I always had the skills. I focused more on my body.

You began your college career at Eastern Florida State College (NJCAA). Every guy I have interviewed that played JUCO have said it was a grind, but an experience they wouldn´t have traded the world for. How was it for you?

I agree. What many don´t realize is that JUCO has a lot of good players. Guys usually land here because of bad grades. I learned that if I want to get somewhere, I have to work hard.

You then played a season with the University of West Georgia (NCAA2). You only played a season there. Why didn´t you finish there?

I stayed only one season, because I was ineligible for a second season.

What was your fondest moment on the court? Possibly your 23/13 game against Carver?

I don´t even think that that was my best game. Maybe on paper it was. My fondest moment was winning the dunk contest at midnight madness.

How did head coach Michael Cooney groom and prepare you best for a pro career?

He taught me discipline. I understood that if I didn´t do something a certain way, I would sit.

Who won a 1-1 in practice you or Zac Taulien?

I won. Not too many beat me.

Who the toughest player you battled that reached the NBA?

I played against Bam Adebayo. I played against James Harden in a Miami tournament and did really well. He didn´t play defense. I put up 37 points against Jeremy Pargo also in Miami. I also played against Derrick Jones Jr.

Who are your 4 best teammates of all-time?

Thanks Jaylen for talking to germanhoops.com. Your playing your rookie season overseas in Germany with Team Ehingen. How blessed do you feel to be able to play the game you love for a living?

I feel really blessed because this opportunity is something that I got very late and I feel like it was an opportunity that God saved for me so I could be able to be somewhere where I could experience a great environment on the court as well as a great environment off the court so I truly feel blessed every time and practice or just in the games

What do you know in general about the country and it´s basketball? Have you had any friends play here in the past?

I really don’t know much in general, but I have been seeing how much they love the sport. I did know that Dirk Nowitzki was from Germany, but I do have two friends that have played here.

You came late into the 24-25 season. Was the job market tough coming from division 2?

The job market was definitely tough coming from division two and not only to mention coming from a historical black at college university. They don’t give many kids like us a chance so I just like to take my opportunity and be able to show everyone that if we were able to have more chances then we would definitely be in more of a market for basketball around the world.

What have you enjoyed most about the overseas experience? How big is that day to day feeling of being able to learn and get better?

What I have enjoyed the most is being inside of a new culture and seeing how they live every day, because it’s so different from America. The daily feeling of getting better and learning is what I think about when I wake up every day just because I know that this is my job and I have to be getting better and taking my job seriously so that way I can take this further than just this year.

Your only a rookie but one of the older guys. How enriching is it for you personally to be able to have young teammates? Does it sometimes feel like your in school again?

Honestly, I enjoy having young teammates just because I feel like I can teach them some things and show them new ways they can make themselves better and they’re all about learning so I enjoy the part of having those young guys, but it does have a feeling of being back in school.

Team Ehingen is fighting to stay in the Pro B. What is crucial now in being able to produce more wins? I´m sure the win over the RheinStars gave the team a lot of extra self confidence?

The most crucial thing now is for us to play with energy and have fight because that carries a lot farther than any of the statistics stuff. I definitely feel like it gives confidence to the entire team and the coaching staff because now we know if we can play against the number one seed, then we can play against everybody.

Let´s talk about your game. You’re a 193cm swing man. If you had to compare your game to an NBA player who would best fit the description?

The player that I will compare my game to is honestly Kawhi Leonard when he is healthy

Would it be a correct assessment that versatility is your biggest strength? You fill the stat sheet like no other.

Yes, I would definitely say versatility is my biggest strength and that’s something I Pride myself on being able to help the team in different areas any given night.

Last season at Winston Salem you averaged 8 rebounds and as a rookie in Germany almost 10 rebounds. Do you simply know where the ball will go on every shot? What is your secret?

I have a little trick on how I know where the ball might be in, but it’s something that I can just see for myself and I’ve been doing it since a kid so I honestly have a niche for it but it’s no big secret.

Talk a little about your defensive game? What kind of a defender would you call yourself now and where do you still want to go with your game?

I will honestly call myself a srappy defender and a defender that loves to help others, but I want to be a better on ball defender so that’s where I want to involve my basketball game mainly on the defensive side

On what areas of your game are you working on most now so you can continue to make strides?

The area I´m working on most now is being comfortable, making plays with the ball along with shooting the three ball.

You must have a big ambition to reach higher leagues? Have you ever checked out a BBL or Eurocup game in ULM? Do you feel like you could hold your own against players like that?

Yes, of course I have ambition to reach higher leagues but I feel like everything will happen in due time. I have never checked out any of the BBL or euro cup games, but it would be nice to go see and I always feel like I can hold my way against anyone no matter what level of basketball.

You began your NCAA career at Gardner-Webb but played only 9 games. How tough was this freshman year? Could you gain any positives out of it?

My first year was pretty tough considering once I enrolled into the school, the coach who recruited me left, so I was left to a situation where I really had nobody that would actually pay me too much attention, but I feel like the biggest positive I gained out of it was being comfortable with not playing minutes, but still seeing myself get better every day.

You then went to Winston Salem State University (NCAA2) averaging 12.5ppg, 6.0rpg, 1.1apg, FGP: 50.0%, 3PT: 20.0%, FT: 73.5%. You won a CIAA title in your first season. What do you remember of that run?

Unfortunately COVID cancelled the tournament after. I remember that run just being full of fun. We were really playing and clicking on all cylinders and have bought into what the coach wanted so I feel like that just gave us the edge over most teams and we were all on the same page.

Covid then changed so much for everyone. You missed 2 years and worked at Greensboro airport. How much did that change your life in that part of your life?

That drastically changed my life just because I was able to see how someone who didn’t play basketball or sports at all lived in everyday life and also gave me some life-changing events that I was glad to be a part of because it made me who I am today and has given me someone special I really needed.

You then returned to Winston Salem State University (NCAA2) and played 2 more seasons averaging 11.6ppg, 6.9rpg, 1.3apg, FGP: 51.6%, 3PT: 22.2%, FT: 74.5% and 18.1ppg, 8.5rpg, 1.2apg, FGP: 61.5%, 3PT: 26.1%, FT: 74.5%. You won a second CIAA title. What do you remember from that run? You had some real defensive battles against Virginia Union and Lincoln.

I remember that run being really tough for me considering I played most of the season dealing with a knee injury, but that run right there gave me a different mind of how mentally strong I know I can be

You lost your last NCAA 2 game to Bluefield State scoring 34 points. Was that one of your toughest loses in your career?

I would say yes that is the laws of my career just because I knew that was the last game that I would ever play in a Winston Salem State jersey and I never took any of it for granted.

How did head coach Cleo Hill groom and prepare you best for a professional career?

Coach Hill really prepared me for my career just by the terminology he helped us use in the way he showed us how to play basketball so the style of basketball that they play is exactly correlated to this style basketball that is played here in Europe, but I will also say both of the assistant coaches Lance Back with and Rick Wilson were two of the best coaches that I’ve ever been coached by.

Who won a 1-1 in practice you or Isaac Parson?

Me and Isaac honestly never played 1 on 1 basketball, but if I had to bet on who would win, I will always bet on myself.

Who is the toughest player that you ever faced in your life that reached the NBA?

The player that I have ever faced would be Coby White that plays for the Chicago Bulls just because at a young age he really understood the game of basketball and how to get to the spots. He wanted to shoot the ball in, and that helped me understand what I needed to do to get better as a player.

Jamie Edoka(Skyliners) Goes From An ICE Train Ride To The Sap Garden For His First easyCredit BBL Minutes Against FC Bayern Munich

On Sunday night 17 year old Jamie Edoka (195-G-2008) was ending a successful weekend by having led the Skyliners Juniors to a massive Pro B win against the TSV Oberaching Tropics. He scored 21 points and as usual did a fantastic job as playmaker running the offense and hit big shots in many phases of the game. 48 hours later Edoka was standing on the court in Munich in the state of the art area Sap Garden and made his easyCredit BBL debut for the Frankfurt Skyliners. Playing in the BBL is the dream of so many young German players. The opportunity to do this came mainly because the Skyliners had many key players out and they had to bring reinforcements. The call to Edoka surely helped that he isn´t only a main contributor for the clubs NBBL U-19 team, but also a key player for their pro B farm team. He is a starter on the team and deserved to be given this incredible opportunity. It is definitely an experience he will never forget. “I came into the game in the 6th or 7th minute of the game. Going on the court in the Sap Garden was an indescribable feeling. I knew at that moment that I might be defending the best shooter in the world with Andi Obst or ex NBA player Carsen Edwards or young talent Ivan Kharchenkolv. To be able to witness this was unbelievable”, stressed Jamie Edoka. “I´m very proud of him and am happy that he got this opportunity. I hope he will get more opportunities like that”, said teammate Ivan Crnjac. He got many nice congratulatory messages from family and friends and after the game German national player Ivan Kharchenko congratulated him on a good game and wished him good health. “I think that this was a huge step for the youth department of the Skyliners. He totally deserved to get this opportunity with his good play in the NBBL and Pro B. I hope that there will more chances like this for talented players”, stressed teammate Maximillian Peters.

The pass first guard who enjoys watching basketball video´s of Maodo Lo actually first was informed on Monday night between 10-11 pm that he would be able to suit up against euroleague team FC Bayern Munich. “I was very overjoyed to have gotten the call informing me that I could play. I never expected it. It is always something you hope for, but getting the chance from one day to the next was like a dream come true”, expressed Jamie Edoka. The game was less than 24 hours later. Tuesday was a very wild day. He began Tuesday by going to school like any other day. He left at noon time and went hone to pack his bags for Munich. The ICE train departed Frankfurt at 1:30 and arrived around 5:30, two and a half hours before game time. What does a 17 year old kid do to pass the time on the train before the biggest moment in his basketball life? “At the start of the trip, I was doing homework, but in the last 1-2 hours, I focused on the game. I was reading our playbook which was given to me before the trip and I also watched some clips from the first game against Munich while listening to music”, stated Jamie Edoka. He didn´t go to the team hotel when he arrived in Munich, but right to the Sap Garden arena. His teammates arrived at about the same time to the arena at 6.00pm.

The Frankfurt Skyliners came to Munich missing 4 key players with guards Jordan Theodore and Trey Calvin as well as forwards Einaras Tubutis and Patrick Heckman. FC Bayern Munich was also missing some key players like Devin Booker, but overall FC Bayern Munich was the favorite on paper. But instead of steamrolling Frankfurt in the first minutes, it was actually Frankfurt that totally surprised Munich taking the rapid 12-3 lead. Did FC Bayern Munich underestimate Frankfurt and was Frankfurt playing on Adrenaline? “I don´t think that Munich underestimated us, but seemed a bit asleep at the start. We came in very focused, but they weren´t”, remembered Jamie Edoka. The turning point of the game came in the second quarter as FC Bayern Munich poured it on exploding for 28 points and showing what kind of a brutal offensive arsenal they have. At half-time the Frankfurt Skyliners trailed 42-35, but were still in striking distance. “They had lost to Vechta unexpectedly last weekend. They took us seriously. They still played with a good rotation. I think the players got some fire from their coach. It is only a matter of time when guys like Edwards and Obst begin hitting shots”, said Jamie Edoka. FC Bayern Munich went into the second half with some momentum and then shifted up a few gears and totally stifled the Skyliners holding them too only 21 points. “You noticed in the second half that we were missing key players and that is tough to compensate when you play a top team like Munich. I think we were trying to save our strength for the BBL Cup weekend. We didn´t give them the game. We fought until the end”, warned Jamie Edoka.

Edoka who lists ex Skyliner Alvin Onyia as his mentor the last few years was extremely nervous before checking in, but that is expected when you turned 17 only a few weeks ago. He was very fortunate to have his Pro B coach Sepher Tarrah on the sidelines who functions as an assistant coach for the easyCredit BBL team. Tarrah helped him lessen some of the jitters that were swirling in his head. “It was very important that Sepher was there. The most important thing he told me was that at the end of the day it is all the same. It is just basketball. The only difference is that it is a higher level. These words really helped against my nervousness. He was helping me the whole game with constructive feedback”, commented Jamie Edoka. He has practiced with the BBL team in the past and already knew the guys and also got advice from them to also help him with the big challenge. How difficult was it getting used to the BBL level? “It was like worlds apart. Coming from the NBBL, it was so so different for me. It is so much quicker the play than what I was used to. I honestly didn´t get used to it. I just wanted to survive. I was trying to understand what was happening”, stressed Jamie Edoka. A massive moment for him was guarding 2 so talented players with ex NBA guys Carsen Edwards and Shabazz Napier. “I didn´t think that Edwards would be so small. To see how he moves and how he is able to create his own shot was unbelievable. I had never seen something like that before. I did notice that Napier has gotten older, but he still uncorked something like 3 behind the back passes and no look passes. He also was able to find teammates so quickly. That is something that I won´t forget so quickly”, warned Jamie Edoka. He played 24 minutes going 0/3, but had 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. He definitely knows what he has to do to keep playing at the BBL level. “I need to get that game IQ, work on my ball handing and shot. I just have to keep working hard. I want to play at this level”, stressed Jamie Edoka. So what was his favorite own play of the game? “My assist to Lorenz Breneke on the pick and roll. That was the first time in the game where I read the defense well”, stated Jamie Edoka. Ex Skyliner Isaac Bonga was in attendance as he was on a little break from Partizan Belgrade. Bonga like Edoka also began in the Skyliners organization going the route of NBBL-Pro B-BBL-NBA. The only difference was that Bonga was hyped already at this age and Edoka not. “I didn´t know that he was at the game. I found out after the game. It is a good feeling to know that he also played with the Skyliners in young years. It motivates me that a great career is possible”, stressed Jamie Edoka.

Justin Onyejiaka(Rasta Vechta) Is Always In Grind Mode As His Biggest Motivation Is Sky Is The Limit

Justin Onyejiaka (195-SG-2004) is a 20 year old 195cm guard that has returned back to Rasta Vechta for the 2024-2025 season. He couldn´t play his first game this season until January 3, 2025 due to a tough injury. Currently he has played 8 games in the Pro A averaging 5,6ppg, 2,1rpg and 1,3spg. He played the last 2 seasons with the Frankfurt Skyliners. In his first season he played 6 easyCredit BBL games and in the Pro B averaged : 13.3ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.4apg, 1.3spg, FGP: 52.0%, 3PT: 23.2%, FT: 57.1%. Last season he played 41 pro A games averaging 7.0ppg, 1.8rpg, FGP: 58.3%, 3PT: 32.9%, FT: 72.8%, and in the Pro B averaged 23.3ppg, 5.8rpg, 2.7apg, 1.8spg, FGP: 58.0%, 3PT: 47.8%, FT: 60.0%. He began his basketball career with BBC Osnabruck and then played 2 seasons with Rasta Vechta in the JBBL, Regionalliga and Pro A. He spoke to germanhoops.com after the U-20 European championships.

Thanks Justin for talking to germanhoops.com. Last summer Germany finished the U-20 Euro at 12th place. What was your summary of the tournament?

I thought it was a good tournament for us. We had some good wins, but also some tough loses against France and Italy. I think had we won those games, we would have been in a better position to have a better result at the end.

Is it possible to feel after the preparation how well the team could do going in? What kind of a feeling did you have?

I had mixed feelings. We had some bad results in the preparation. But I knew that we had good potential going in.

Germany lost a tough game to France 103-78. Germany shot out the lights with 15 three´s, but gave up 26 turnovers. What do you believe did the team learn from the game?

The biggest problem was their length which they had at every position. You don´t see that much at that level. We had problems playing switch defense.

It is always nice to see a well rounded scoring team, but was the team possibly missing 2 very dominant go to guys? Martin Kalu is one of those guys.

I wouldn´t say that. I feel like with all the talent we had, the scoring was evened out. Any player could have stepped up in any game.

You averaged 8/1/2 stats in 18 minutes at the 2024 Eurochampionships. How content were you with your game? Your three point and free throw shooting weren´t great?

One could see in the last games that we were all exhausted. I feel like I played a good tournament in the minutes that I got. I showed what I could do on the court.

What was it like playing for new Vechta BBL coach Martin Schilling? What did you appreciate right away from his coaching abilities?

I appreciated how structured his practices were. They weren´t boring at all. He had all kinds of drills from skill work to defense. I really like that. It was good to see what is to come with Vechta.

Did you notice anything in his coaching that he brought over from his G-League time?

I can´t really say. I did notice that he had many different plays. He was always ready with plays especially in difficult situations or with little time left on the clock.

The minutes were well defined, but how big was the competitive level for minutes, something that will be great again in Vechta this season?

It is always like that with talented teams. You always have to fight for minutes. It was similar like that in Frankfurt as well. I´m always ready for the Competitive fight for minutes. That is part of the basketball business.

You were teammates with so many great young German players. Was there a guy that had a big impact or influence on you?

I can´t pick just 1 player.

After 2 years in Frankfurt, you have returned back to an old stomping ground Vechta. Vechta has grown tremendously as an organization in the last years especially with developing young players. Did you see a bigger chance of getting minutes and developing further than remaining in Frankfurt?

Yes I do. That was a big reason why I returned to Vechta. The perspective for young players is better in Vechta. With Frankfurt the biggest thing is to win.

What are your biggest goals this season besides helping the team win? I´m sure you will get more Pro A minutes than in Frankfurt and in between get BBL minutes.

I will do whatever is asked of me. I will work very hard. My biggest motivation is always sky is the limit.

How excited are you to play with big German talent Johan Gurneloh before he leaves for bigger and better things? What do you like most about his game. His block shot strength and your athleticism and long arms could form a great duo on defense?

I have known him since a long time. He is a super big talent. It is crazy how well he has developed in the last 2 years. He is a great shot blocker and I like to paly pick and roll with him.

How excited are you to play for Hendrik Gruehn again? How have you seen him develop in last 2 years?

I´m really looking forward to work with him again. I´m so happy for his success. He has come such a long way with the NBBL team and then leading the Pro B team to the Pro A.

You played the last 2 years in Frankfurt. How did you grow as a player and a man in Frankfurt?

I became more mature and stable as a player. I learned a lot from Klaus Perwas especially on the defensive end. I learned effort over all. You can overcome mistakes with high effort.

You came to Frankfurt wanting to become a two way player. Did you achieve that?

Yes I think I have. I have gotten nearer to that goal and that will continue to be my card.

How tough was that first season in Frankfurt having to move down to the Pro A? What did you learn from that season?

It was a tough season. It was overburdening. I was injured and the overload with BBL and Pro B was too much for me. We practiced too much and that was a reason why I got injured. There was a lot of chaos. The second season was a lot better. There was more structure and rhythm that season.

You had the delight to be teammates with Quantez Robertson for a season. What is your nicest moment with him?

It was really cool to have a veteran like him around. I liked his motivational speeches most. He was always able to pick you up when we were down.

You helped Frankfurt reach the Pro A final. What was so special about this team?

We had a great bond. Everybody understood each other really well. I hadn´t really ever seen that before. We always had fun and were motivated. We were really together.

Last season in the pro A you averaged 7,0ppg and 1,8rpg in 15 minutes. I personally would have liked to have seen you have a bigger role. How do you summarize your season?

I saw my season as positive. I was really happy how I was able to come back from an operation and get integrated so well and play well. I would have liked to have a bigger role, but that is how it happened. I wouldn´t have changed it for anything.

Head coach Denis Wucherer stress defense. How did he help you become a better defender?

I got my minutes because of my defense. I had to give full energy and shut down the opponents best player

You had many wonderful games like against Paderborn, Jena and in the 2 final games against PS Karlsruhe. What was your fondest moment on the court?

My favorite moment was winning game 5 in Trier. That was a crazy game and just an unreal feeling winning the game. I also liked my game against Paderborn. Coming back from an injury and little practice and playing that well was a big moment.

How well will Germany do at the Olympics?

I obviously support Germany, but I don´t see them winning a medal. USA will win Gold. Canada Silver and France or Serbia bronze.

Chrysostom Chukwuma Likes The Challenge Of Having That Responsibility And Leadership With The Young Skyliners Juniors

Chrysostom Chukwuma (190-G-1996, agency: Bell Basketball) is a 28 year old 190cm guard playing his first season in Germany with the Skyliners Juniors (Pro B) after starting the season with the Helsinki Seagulls. He began his basketball career with Vantaan Pussihukat. He then played 5 seasons with Jyvaskyla Basketball Academy. He then played 2 seasons with Lapuan Kobrat (Korisliiga) and a season with Pyrinto Tampere (Korisliiga). He spoke to germanhoops.com after the big win over the TSV Oberaching Tropics.

Thanks Chuko for talking to germanhoops.com. Did you watch the Superbowl or is that not as popular in Finland?

It isn´t as popular in Finland, but I have friends that follow it. I never got into it.

Did some of your teammates watch or watch in groups?

I have no idea.

Congrats on the big 75-63 win over the TSV Oberaching Tropics. The team has a 3 game winning streak. How good is life now?

It feels great to be successful. It wasn´t easy for me to come to a new team in mid season. I have to learn the coaches philosophy, system and tendencies of the players. It was our first game without Hadenfeldt. I want that responsibility and leadership. We have a young team, but have a lot of potential.

The first quarter was won 19-17 by the guests. How tough was it getting the offense going with the pesky Tropics guards?

That was our biggest problem the whole game. They did a good job dodging the screens. We had problems getting open. We had too many turnovers.

The team had 7 turnovers in the first quarter and 23 in all. How big is it of a job for you to bring some stability to the offense?

Yes exactly. Hadenfeldt is away now and I have to bring rhythm into the offense and bring calmness to us.

In the second quarter the Skyliners Juniors did a better job on the pick and roll after not getting the side pick and roll going in the first quarter. How much fun is it playing with Malik Kordel?

I love Malik. I watched some games before I signed. I have never played with a 7 footer that has such good hands as he does. He is super young and has a bright future. I love playing with him.

In the third quarter the Skyliners Juniors were able to lead by 12 points after 30 minutes. What adjustments did the team make?

We just turned up the intensity and got more stops and ran the court and pushed the pace. We made one pass to the wing and attacked.

In the fourth quarter the Tropics punched back with a 9-2 run to trail 56-52. What was key for the guests coming back?

We made small mistakes. We have to learn to be consistent for 40 minutes.

The Skyliners Juniors came back with a run to get their lead back to double figurers. How developed is the cohesion of the team?

I think that we have good energy. When we have hard moments, it tests us. Then we can see how well we can stay together, but that happens with young teams.

Malik Kordel made a massive poster dunk on Maxwell Dongmo Temoka. What were you thinking when you saw that?

That is what he does. He is a great athlete that can run the court well. I have never seen a player that tall that can move so well.

When you look back at the 40 minutes of the game, what was the Skyliners biggest strength in the game?

We kept fighting and where physical even if it was ugly.

You had a 15/4/2 game in 28 minutes. How content were you with your game?

I made some three´s that gave us some release. You can never be satisfied. I´m looking forward to the next games.

What was your favorite play of the game besides Kordel´s poster dunk?

I liked how we played the third quarter. We began with good energy. That is how we should start every game. Make the first hit and make the opponent call a time out and put pressure on them.

Jamie Edoka Powers The Skyliners Juniors to the 75-63 Victory Over TSV Oberaching Tropics

The seventh placed Skyliners Juniors continued to play good basketball in the last weeks having won 3 of their last 4 games including a 87-61 on the road against the always pesky Ehingen team who like Frankfurt have many talented young players. With the regular season going into the last stage, every game is important for the jockeying of the playoff places. Frankfurt didn´t have an easy opponent this weekend as they had the TSV Oberaching Tropics who despite being banged up for weeks and not having a full roster still had a positive 9-8 record and were in fifth place. Head coach Mario Matic who was a easyCredit BBL player in 2008 with Nordlingen has done a great job for years keeping players and developing a great team chemistry. Oberaching had a positive 3-2 record since the new year, but only 3-5 on the road. Frankfurt had to say farewell to veteran Philipp Hadenfeldt who for a second time in the last 2 seasons took a semester abroad this time in Italy. But they had hauled in Finish point guard Chuki Chukwuma who had been solid in his first 3 games including 28 points against the RheinStars Cologne. On a cold Sunday evening, both teams met in the BCM in Frankfurt and saw a very low scoring and tight first half, but in the second half the Skyliners Juniors found to their game better and took control and in the end won easily 75-63. “In the first half we didn´t really have a good offensive flow, but our defense was pretty good. We had a few individual mistakes and they over gambled a bit. In the third quarter we upped our defense allowing only 6 points. That helped us get good control of the game which we kept to the end”, stressed Skyliner Junior Jamie Edoka (195-G-2008). The TSV Oberaching Tropics as usual weren´t complete again as captain Janosch Koegler was sick and Jorg Dippold was injured. They stuck with Frankfurt for a half, but in the second half just couldn´t keep up their consistent defense from the first half as the Juniors executed well and played great inside out basketball. “We didn´t have the necessary energy, concentration and focus tonight. We were satisfied at the break that we were only down by 1 point. We didn´t play a good first half. We had a slow start in the third quarter and that carried over until the end”, stressed TSV Oberaching Tropics guard Omari Knox.

The first quarter was a back and forth battle with 5 lead changes where no club could get away from the other. Both teams were concentrating more on getting the ball inside. Ex IBAM center Fynn Fischer who played 3 BBL games scored twice while Frankfurt got a bucket from big man Malik Kordel and a basket by Jamie Edoka as the game was dead locked 7-7. 38 year old Omari Know who averaged 22,0ppg in 8 Regionalliga seasons showed he can score in bunches as he presented his deadly mid range game for the 11-7 Tropics lead. Jamie Edoka who turned 17 years old a few weeks ago continued to play with crazy self confidence hitting a trey to trail only 11-10. The Tropics continued to find Fynn Fischer as he made 2 lay in´s to keep Oberaching ahead 15-12. Three´s hadn´t been on the menu, but ex Hanau guard Bruno Albrecht nailed a trey to tie the game at 15-15. The guests had the narrow 19-17 lead after 10 minutes getting free throws from Fischer and a lay in from birthday boy Philipp Bode. TSV Oberaching Tropics shot 47% from the field while Frankfurt was at 33%. Both teams couldn´t hit the ocean from outside as combined they were 2/12. Frankfurt dominated the paint area 12-6 with 3-0 offensive rebounds while their plague of coughing up the ball continued as they had 7 turnovers and TSV Oberaching Tropics only 3. “We knew that it would be a hard game. They like to bump you a lot. We aren´t used to that. We had no offensive rhythm as their pick and roll defense was good as they slowed down our side pick and roll”, stated Skyliner Junior Florian Dietrich.

The second quarter continued to be low scoring as the TSV Oberaching Tropics led by as much as 9 points, but the Skyliners Juniors never stopped fighting and came back and had the 1 point lead at half-time. The TSV Oberaching Tropics came out with a lethal 9-2 run to extend their lead to 28-19. In the run The TSV Oberaching Tropics played aggressive defense and forced turnovers with their quick guards Bode and Jukic. Omari Knox added 4 points including a three pointer and Fynn Fischer and Jukic added lay in´s. Frankfurt´s offense was ok and had good looks, but they weren´t capable to hit open shots. But basketball wouldn´t be basketball without runs as now it was time for Frankfurt. Frankfurt buckled down and heightened their defensive pressure and finally started to hit shots as they escaped out on a 13-3 run to take back the lead 32-31. In the run the Skyliners Juniors got massive support from Jamie Edoka who led the offense with his leadership and scored twice while Chuko Chukwuma scored 2 three´s. “Jamie is a Pro B rookie, but plays like he has been in the league for 5 years. He just does the job and always finds a solution on offense. He reads the defense so well. Last year he had problems with the trap, but he has improved so much. He also played good defense on Omari Knox”, stated Skyliner Junior Florian Dietrich. Maximillian Peters also added a step back jumper from the wing. Frankfurt´s high energy and aggressiveness on defense led to Tropics turnovers while the Tropics defense were a bit weak on the 1-1 defense. Fynn Fischer closed out the second quarter with an old school hook shot. “We played more pick and roll through the middle. They didn´t ice as well so we got more three pointers”, commented Florian Dietrich. The Skyliners Juniors shot 36% from the field and 29% from the three point line and had 23 rebounds and 13 turnovers while the TSV Oberaching Tropics shot 35% from the field and 8% from the three point line and had 19 rebounds and 6 turnovers.

In the third quarter the Skyliners Juniors were able to take total control of the game and led by as much as 14 points and after 30 minutes led by 12 points. The TSV Oberaching Tropics got on the board first as ex Fc Bayern basketball 2 German Maxwell Dongmo Temoka made a lay in to give Oberaching the 33-32 advantage. The Skyliners Juniors then exploded for a 10-0 run to capture back the lead at 42-33. In the run Jamie Edoka continued to be in attack mode as he scored with 2 drives, Bruno Albrecht added 4 points and versatile German Marvin Esser made a runner. Frankfurt tightened up their defense as they would only allow 6 points. Their help defense was their biggest strength in the quarter. TSV Oberaching Tropics couldn´t match Frankfurt´s intensity and their 1-1 defense couldn´t contain the Juniors attackers. Fischer stopped the Frankfurt run with a hook shot, but Frankfurt punched back with a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 49-35. In the run Frankfurt got 3 free throws from Bruno Albrecht, a massive dunk from Dusan Nikolic from the wing and a big 2 handed dunk by Marvin Esser who received the bullet pass from Namori Omog. “He has a special knack of seeing his teammates”, said Jamie Edoka. The TSV Oberaching Tropics closed out the third quarter with a lay in by Maxwell Dongmo Temoka to trail 49-37. “Our offensive flow was very good. We had one good situation which led to another good situation. That helped raise our self-confidence. We knew they would go inside. Our help defense was excellent. We know we have to help each other because we are all like family”, added Namori Omog. “We had a lack of focus and mis communication on defense. They did a good job hitting shots”, expressed Omari Knox. The Skyliners Juniors shot 36% from the field and 22% from the parking lot and had 35 rebounds and 16 turnovers while the TSV Oberaching Tropics shot 29% from the field and 5% from the parking lot and had 32 rebounds and 9 turnovers.

In the fourth quarter both teams had their respective best scoring quarters in the game as both scored 26 points a piece, but the TSV Oberaching Tropics couldn´t get over the hump as they couldn´t get stops. Fans also saw a few more spectacular dunks to go home content. The TSV Oberaching Tropics got good support from ex Tuebingen playedr Niklas Schueler with 2 baskets while Frankfurt received lay in´s from Albrecht and Chuwuma and a trey from Maximillian Peters, but the TSV Oberaching Tropics couldn´t make any ground as Frankfurt led 56-43. Despite having only a 8 man rotation, the TSV Oberaching Tropics still had some energy left in their gas tank as they broke out on a 9-2 run to trail only 58-52. In the run ex BBL player Peter Zeis was aggressive scoring 5 points including a three pointer while Dongmo Temoka and Schueler made lay in´s. “We lost a little concentration. But the good thing about our team is that we are always able to catch ourselves”, stated Jamie Edoka. But the Skyliners Juniors fought back going on a 9-4 run to extend their lead to 67-56. In the run it was Jamie Edoka who made a lay in while Chukwuma also scored in the paint area and Bruno Albrecht hit a trey. Malik Kordel ended the run in massive fashion with a poster dunk on Dongmo Temoka. “Dongmo was hyped up I think. You should never try to jump with Malik. Nobody can stop him”, warned Jamie Edoka. Zeis stopped the run with a trey, but Edoka connected again with a trey as time in and time out, he hit big shots for the 70-59 lead. “With Hadenfeldt gone, I know that I have to show even more responsibility. I´m ready for it. I know that I have too many turnovers, but I´m working on it. I´m always ready to take the big shots”, warned Jamie Edoka. Knox did add a trey, but Frankfurt closed out the game strong with a Kordel alley-oop dunk and Chukwuma three pointer. “We pushed the ball and got the ball inside and got easy baskets in our run, but Frankfurt got their offense going again and hit three´s stated Omari Knox. The Skyliners Juniors were led by Jamie Edoka with 21 points while Bruno Albrecht added 16 points and Chuko Chukwuma 15 points while the TSV Oberaching Tropics were led by Fynn Fischer with 16 points while Maxwell Dongmo Temoka added 12 points. The Skyliners Juniors shot 46% from the field and 31% from outside and had 44 rebounds and 23 turnovers while the TSV Oberaching Tropics shot 37% from the field and 11% from outside and had 36 rebounds and 10 turnovers.

Dreams Do Come True as Jeremy Ingram Almost Shed A Tear When He was Signed By Luxemburg First Division Team Avanti Monsdorf

After learning of the Luka Doncic deal on Sunday, I really thought there wouldn´t be much more that could shock me in the basketball world. I mean you could go on an on discussing the Doncic trade and still not get any clarity why the Dallas Mavericks could ever do a deal like this. That was just pure negative shock for me. A few days later I got that shock feeling again, but it was rather positive and pure enjoyment shock if one can name it that. I was checking social media early Tuesday afternoon and there was a post, I had been waiting years for, but had never gotten. The post read FORWARD: JJ Ingram goes off for 30 points in First League Luxembourg against the #1 Team in the Country. I sawthat and at first couldn´t believe it. I went to my message box and there was a message from Jeremy Ingram (183-G-1991, college: AAMU) with the highlight video. It had finally happened. Jeremy Ingram was on a first division team. I mean for years he had been grinding to at least reach the Pro B in Germany as he was dropping 30 points in the Regionalliga almost blindfolded. I mean he would have been ecstatic reaching the pro B, but it was even greater. He was in the first division in Luxemburg. “It felt amazing to be honest, at one point I almost shed a tear because I should have been on this level years ago. But I was just grateful for the opportunity”, stressed Jeremy Ingram. He will enjoy every minute as his contract is for 10 days and 3 games. He lost the first game to T71 scoring 12 points, but found to his game in the second contest exploding for 30 points.

I interviewed Jeremy Ingram who has toiled in the German Regionalliga for 8 seasons with clubs like like Speyer, Idstein, Bensheim, SG Mannheim, TSV Bargteheide and SG Braunschweig more than a month ago where he had told me that after sitting out this season to concentrate on his skills training business, he would resume his playing career next season. And then he surprises the world by landing in Luxemburg. Did he plan this or was this out of the blue? “This offer was completely out the blue. I was actually in Milan, Italy celebrating my birthday when I got the call. I moved there literally 2 days before the 1st game”, said Jeremy Ingram. One big supporter of Jeremy Ingram is Chris Cumings who was his coach in Mannheim and has kept contact for many years. Did Cummings who has good contacts have anything to do with the deal. “No Chris had nothing to do with this. I actually came to workout with this team years ago but I believe I ended up signing to a different team in Germany that year so me and the manager kept contact for all these years. I guess their American got hurt and he thought about me and wanted to give me a chance to step in for a few games”, stated Jeremy Ingram. His new team Avanti are in last place and need as much help as possible. He has 2 main goals in his 10 day stay. “ The main goal is to help these guys get a win because they desperately need it. The other goal is to pretty much show people that I´m here and I should have been here. Maybe more higher league doors will open up for me after this”, warned Jeremy Ingram. It isn´t to difficult to guess what the role of this walking bucket is. “At 1st I was told like every other team I played for to come in and be a point guard. But teams always see how well I score the ball so I always end up with a scorer role on the team. But my main role is to just help win, whatever it takes”, commented Jeremy Ingram. He quickly found good company as there was another American on board with Jake Ross. “Jake is a very nice guy and a very good shooter. Met part of his family and they were also super sweet. He is definitely the 1 person I talked to the most while in Luxembourg. Shoutout to him”, expressed Jeremy Ingram.

Jeremy Ingram who thinks that the Dallas Mavericks made a huge mistake trading Luka Doncic had a massive challenge in his second game battling number one team Etzella that featured some very talented Americans with Jimmie Taylor and Quatarrius Wilson and put up 30 points. It wasn´t difficult for him to find the best comparison to where the first division Luxemburg would rank up to leagues in Germany. “Playing in Etzella’s gym was amazing because it actually felt like a first league gym and their team was very good. Even though we lost I played pretty decent so I was happy about that. I mean dropping 30 on the #1 team in the country is definitely an accomplishment. I would say the league is in between Pro B and Pro A for sure. It is very fast and very competitive though”, said Jeremy Ingram. It seemed like he nailed 30 points without any effort at all especially after viewing the highlight reel. “I can always get to my spots. And if I get to my spots I feel like no one can stop that, it’s just up to me to make my shots. I put up 30 points after really not playing competitive basketball or training for like a whole year so my thoughts are what if I actually started the season with the team or actually practiced more than once before playing maybe I could have been a little more efficient and had a lot more than 30 points”, warned Jeremy Ingram. Even if he has that lethal scoring and incredible knack of showcasing his game 1-1, will he be able to showcase other parts of his game? “ This game specifically called for a lot of scoring because the other team was scoring a lot so we were trying to keep the game as close as possible. I was really the only 1 with a great rhythm this game so I was shooting to score but like I said if I was more in game shape maybe I could have been a little more efficient. But I only had 1 team practice before the game. My team will need me to step up on the defensive end but the whole team will need to step up on the defense side if we expect to get the W. You proved that you can score a lot at a high level”, stressed Jeremy Ingram. So does his chip get a bit easier on the shoulders after having a masterful 30 point game, or does it remain heavy? “I mean I know I can score at any level, it’s the rest of the world that doesn’t seem to know that. The chip will always be there until I hang my jersey up, I think that´s what keeps my drive so strong”, warned Jeremy Ingram. If you watch his Luxemburg highlight reel, you are getting Jeremy Ingram at his best. His ball handling and getting to the hole is incredible. There aren´t many guys in the easyCredit BBL that have those skills in the 1-1. “People always tell me how much they enjoy watching me play basketball. I know guys in the BBL right now who wouldn’t be able to guard my shadow but unfortunately for me it´s all about politics so it don’t matter what I feel I deserve, unless someone wants to give me an opportunity it won’t happen”, added Jeremy Ingram. What more does he have to do to stick out? I believe now that he showed what he can do at the first division in Luxemburg, he may not even have to hope for a job in Germany. He has game to play anywhere. The first division can continue to be his calling now in other countries.

The Giessen 46ers Rebound With Big Second Half As Aiden Warnholtz Leads Them To 89-60 Victory Over The EPG Guardians Koblenz

The losing woes of the EPG Guardians Koblenz continue in 2025. They are still winless in 2025 as they were riding a 6 game losing streak. It seemed like the confidence level continued to sink with every new loss. Injuries have plagued them all season long and even sickness cost them games in the current losing streak. Defense continues to be an issue, but also shooting as they just couldn´t find any consistency this season. Things didn´t get any easier for the 16th placed team as the 4th best team in the Pro A came to Koblenz. Giessen is a team that is dying to get back to the easyCredit BBL and currently had won 6 out of their last 8 games. They are a team with very talented guards, a big time veteran in Robin Benzing and very smart bigs from the Balkan area. On a untypical Thursday night, the CGM arena wasn´t as packed as usual as once again home fans were unable to see a complete game from the EPG Guardians as they had a solid first half, but stunk up the second half allowing 49 points and losing 89-60. It is really a riddle how the EPG Guardians continue to be able to play solid basketball and then go from such a high to such a low. “We had a good first half, but we simply lack experience. We also had too many turnovers from our guards. We didn´t get enough inside scores. Giessen is a top team. They can win the Pro A title”, warned EPG Guardians head coach Marco Van Den Berg. Giessen didn´t play their best in the first half, but even at 60% were good enough to secure the lead. In the second half, they really turned up their game and Koblenz had no answer. “We didn´t come out with the energy that we needed. We knew that they were an aggressive offensive rebounding team. We settled in after their run and got more relaxed. It was a decent first half for us. We have a deep roster and just kept going at them. We did a good job stopping their strengths. We had a good start to the second half and then at our foot on the game”, warned Giessen 46er Aiden Warnholtz (188-G-2000, college: Carleton). Giessen did a good job limiting TJ Cockfield to only 4 points inn the second half. “They did a good job taking my game away”, stressed TJ Cockfield.

The EPG Guardians were without new player Brandon Averette who had the flu, but other than that were complete as was Giessen. The EPG Guardians Koblenz surprised everyone coming out and smacking Giessen with a lethal 12-1 run. Koblenz came out with high intensity and a physicality that Giessen couldn´t match. Czech player David Bohm played his inside out game to perfection scoring 7 points while American TY Cockfield found his spots early adding 5 points. Giessen seemed shocked, but they didn´t have the normal intensity. The body language of Koblenz was magnificent and they were presenting different defenses and not allowing Giessen to get into a rhythm. But basketball is a game of runs and making adjustments and that is what Giessen did. They slowly settled down and found into their sets and a rhythm and closed out the first quarter with a 18-7 run to dead lock the game at 19-19 after 10 minutes. Canadian Aiden Warnholtz had been out for many months and had only played one game since scoring 4 points. In the run he nailed 2 three´s and had 8 points. Ex Bremerhaven guard Simon Krajcovic also drilled home a trey. Serbian beast Simon Kovacevic also added a nasty poster on David Bohm. “That was sweet. The whole set up was done well. He made good reads and got free. It was fun to watch”, said Aiden Warnholtz. TJ Cockfield continued to get to the hole getting 2 buckets and keeping the Guardians in the game. “After their run, we did a good job not allowing easy offensive rebounds. Once we got some stops and saw some balls go in, it got easier for us as we were more relaxed”, stressed Aiden Warnholtz.

In the second quarter the game was at eye level as no team could break away from the other. Despite Giessen´s good ending to the first quarter, it was the EPG Baskets Koblenz that got out of the gates stronger in the second quarter. Koblenz went on a 6-2 run to lead 25-21. Bohm continued to be aggressive and wanting to shine and nailed a trey while ex BBL player Leon Friederici made a lay in. However the Giessen bigs weren´t the only concern for Marco van Den Berg, but also Giessen´s guard play. Out of seemingly no where the guests pulled out a lethal 9-0 run as Warnholtz stroked home 2 three´s and ex Xavier (NCAA) guard Kyle Castlin hit one as Giessen led 30-25. Koblenz wasn´t showing that high intensity and were bewildered by the Giessen ball movement and open shots. Luckily for the EPG Guardians, they were in a phase where their offense was executing. Cockfield continued to make his shots as he scored twice as did role player Ben Stevens while Giessen got a three from ex national player Robin Benzing and a Castlin lay in as Giessen led 35-31. The EPG Guardians Koblenz continued to punch back, but couldn´t get over the hump. Giessen did a good job being aggressive and getting to the free throw line while the Guardians received two buckets from Friederici. The EPG Guardians had good shooting percentages of 54% from the field and 71% from the two point area while Giessen was at 44% from the field and from outside. Koblenz also had the rebound edge 17-12 and only 9 turnovers while Giessen had 10 turnovers, but were still down by 4 points. The three ball from Giessen cost them the lead at the break. “We had problems containing Cockfield. He is a good player and they have good players. Our offense was pretty good. We had a few bad lapses, but overall happy to have the lead at the break”, stated Aiden Warnholtz.

The turning point of the game came in the third quarter as Giessen shifted up a few notches on defense allowing only 10 points and finding a beautiful flow on offense as they scored 25 points and led by 19 points after 30 minutes. Cockfield actually began the second half with a basket as Koblenz trailed only 40-38. But the Giessen 46ers then went on a 14-2 run which the EPG Guardians couldn´t recover from trailing 52-40. Ex Frankfurt Skyliner Kevin Mcclain was instrumental in the run nailing back to back three´s as his microwave abilities do remind one of Vinnie Johnson from back in the day. Mcclain also fed Kovacevic with a pretty alley-oop. “Mcclain did a good job going down hill and finding him for the dunk. Kovacevic is very athletic and gets up there”, stated Aiden Warnholtz. Ex Nurnberg big man Jonathan Maier made back to back baskets while Leon Friederici answered with a reverse lay up and ex North Kentucky University (NCAA) guard Michael Bradley made a 20 footer to keep track to trail 56-44. In the first half Koblenz was able to punch back after being punched, but not so much in the third quarter any more. Giessen continued to execute well against the harmless Guardians defense that still couldn´t gain that intensity from the first 4 minutes of the game and closed out the third quarter with a 9-2 run to lead 65-46 and pretty much already decided the game there. In the run, Giessen got to the free throw line and dominated the paint against the harmless Guardians as Giessen´s Serbian duo of Kovacevic and Mladen Vujic scored. The Guardians offense was static and little ball movement as Giessen aggressive on ball pressure led them to 1-1 situations. “We came out with the right energy on defense. We have athletic and smart guys that executed our game plan. On offense we did a good job sharing the ball and attacking their weaknesses”, commented Aiden Warnholtz. “We have to learn to put together 2 good halves. They consuled out our ball movement and fast tuned their defensive principles”, expressed TY Cockfield.T

The game was already decided in the fourth quarter and it was 10 minutes of pick up basketball mentality. Giessen began rapidly going on a 7-0 run top extend their lead to 72-46. Warnholtz continued his scoring spree with an off balance shot while ex BBL player and Kirchheim Knight Nico Brauner hit a trey. The EPG Guardians were always a step to slow and were lacking the needed intensity and aggressiveness. After a Bradley off balance shot, Giessen struck back with back to back three´s from Warnholtz and ex Braunschweig forward Luis Figge to extend their lead to 78-48. Team play was non existent with Koblenz as they continued to play 1-1 as if they were on a Sunday stroll on the playground. Friederici was at least successful making 2 difficult buckets while Vujic made an easy lay up for the 80-52 advantage after hauling in a blazing bullet pass from Robin Benzing. “Robin is a very good passer. He sees the floor very well and is smart. He makes those passes all the time”, stated Aiden Warnholtz. The game was long over with a few more minutes to play as Giessen outscored Koblenz 9-7. Giessen got another trey from Nico Brauner while Warnholtz made his last basket of the game while Cockfield and Yassin Mahfouz scored. “We finished the game strong. The game was out of hand. It was only my second game back. I tried to make good use of every minute”, stressed Aiden Warnholtz. “We were trying to pick up our game and figure how to put the ball in the hole and try to get all involved. We simply struggled”, said Ty Cockfield. The Giessen 46ers were led by Aiden Warnholtz with 22 points while Victor Kovacevic added 11 points while the EPG Guardians Koblenz were led by Ty Cockfield with 17 points and Leon Friedirici added 15 points. The Giessen 46ers shot 46% from the field and 46% from outside and had 29 rebounds and 13 turnovers while the EPG Guardians Koblenz shot 45% from the field and 17% from outside and had 33 rebounds and 18 turnovers.

Malik Whitaker Powers The Fellbach Flashers Past The Dragons Rhondorf 87-82

The up and down play of the 8-8 Dragons Rhondorf continues. The good news was that they were at home again in their own living room. But this season that unfortunately doesn´t mean anything when your 3-4 at home. The team is fighting for the playoffs and desperately needs to go on a run. They are only 4-4 since December ist and there doesn´t seem to be any rapid development. Winning doesn´t come easy anymore and it didn´t get any easier with the 10-6 Fellbach Flashers who continue to sparkle in the Pro B since arriving last season. They are a team with veterans and top bigs with Daniel Mayr and Brian Butler and a hungry and talented American with Malik Whitaker (198-G-2000, college: Fort Lewis, agency: Starting 5) The Dragons had some confidence going into the game remembering beating Fellbach on the road 78-75, but that game was the first of the season and since then the guests had improved. On a mild Saturday evening in Bad Honnef, fans in the Dragon Dome witnessed the debut of New head coach Marko Zarovic who had replaced Stephan Doehrn only few days earlier. Would a change in the team´s play occur? It definitely didn´t show at the start, but throughout the game, the Dragons Rhondorf heightened their game every quarter until the end, but they never got over the hump despite fighting hard for 40 minutes. “We got better every quarter, but when you dig such a big hole,it is just really difficult to come back especially against a good team like Fellbach. We played with so much energy in the last 3 quarters that it was contagious for our offense”, stressed Dragons Rhondorf guard Kelvin Omojola. Offensively Fellbach had their ups and downs, but defensively they played very well except for the third quarter where they allowed 32 points. The Flashers continue to play great basketball despite not having Zaire Thompson and Mickey De Souza than more than a month. “We did a good job sticking to the game plan for 40 minutes. We played great defense and were disciplined. Despite being banged up, we had others step up”, stressed Fellbach Flasher Malik Whitaker

In the first quarter the game was at eye level for the first minutes, but The Fellbach Flashers found to their game then going on a 26-7 run to lead by 21 points after 10 minutes. It was no secret that it would be a massive mismatch having 218cm giant Daniel Mayr battling against the undersized Dragons team. In the first few minutes, Mayr who played 1 Euroleague game with FC Bayern Munich scored 6 points and dominated the paint area. The Dragons Rhondorf also tried to go inside getting a basket from Ohio native Tim Smith Jr and free throws by German Janne Muller, but Fellbach led 10-6. Fellbach then really found their game going on a 13-2 run to lead 23-8. Brian Butler led the charge with 5 points like Mayr dominating the paint area with his quick moves while the team also got great support from their role player Jeremy Kolev who scored 4 points and Nikola Jekov also scored. “Jeremy has been big for us since the new year. We always knew he could play. His hard work has paid off as he has become a starter. He makes big plays for us”, warned Malik Whitaker Fellbach was playing with great intensity at both ends, had a stifling zone on display, got transition baskets and dominated the boards. The Dragons Rhondorf couldn´t hit the ocean and couldn´t get the 50/50 balls. Young German Kenan Reinhardt made a rare three pointer and Kelvin Omojola a lay in, but all in all their offense wasn´t moving the ball well and were forced to tough shots as Fellbach were everywhere on defense. On offense, they got 5 points from ex JUCO player Malik Whitaker and Lithuanian guard Tauras Ulevicius nailed a three pointer as Fellbach led 36-15 after 10 minutes. Fellbach shot 72% from the 2 point area and 25% from outside and had 17 rebounds and 3 turnovers while the Dragons Rhondorf shot 33% from the 2 point area and 14% from outside and had 7 rebounds and 6 turnovers. “We weren´t ready to play. We knew they had size, but they still punished under the glass. They also had a good zone which we had prepared for”, said Kelvin Omojola.

The Dragons Rhondorf upped their play in the second quarter especially defensively as they allowed only 15 points, but they couldn´t make up much of the deficit and still trailed by 17 points at the break. The Dragons Rhondorf woke up going on a 10-5 run to cut the Flashers lead down to 41-25. In the run, their mind set was more positive than the first quarter and was more aggressive at both ends. That led to an offensive rebound and put back by Danas Kazakevicius and offensive rebound and hook shot by ex Bayreuth center Marco Rahn while Marco Rosic hit a clutch trey. The Dragons were reborn on the boards as they had the 9-2 rebound edge in that phase. Fellbach didn´t have the easy shots anymore as they had more contested shots. But Fellbach fought back and moved the ball better and got 2 three´s from Texas native Malik Whitaker and a left handed hook shot by ex Schwelm center Daniel Mayr as Fellbach extended their lead to 50-28. The Dragons remained aggressive getting to the free throw line as Smith, Kazakevicius and Reinhart scored, but they still had a long trek to the peak as they trailed 51-34 after 20 minutes. “We were flying on defense. We were helping each other, had good communication and were simply all on the same page. Our defense was huge and kept us in the game”, stated Kelvin Omojola.The Fellbach Flashers shot 61% from the 2 point area and 33% from the three point line and had 23 rebounds and 8 turnovers and the Dragons Rhondorf shot 32% from the 2 point area and 11% from the three point line and 26 rebounds and 9 turnovers.

In the third quarter the surge of the Dragons Rhondorf continued as they exploded for 32 points and all of a sudden trailed only by 10 points after 10 minutes. The Dragons Rhondorf are a strong offensive team and only time will tell when they will break out and they finally did going on a 16-9 run to trail 63-50. The Dragons finally let it rain three´s as Omojola connected twice as did Antonio Pilipovic and Marco Rahn. Rhondorf´s offense was clicking, but here and there still sloppy getting unneeded turnovers while on defense continued to be all over the court making it difficult for Fellbach to execute. But Fellbach always had an answer. Once they faced adversary, they came back with a 8-2 run to extend their lead to 71-52 as Ulevicius and Whitaker connected for three pointers. “Whitaker is a great player. He is so smooth and polished. He made us pay with his three pointer. It was pick your poison”, stated Kelvin Omojola. The only bright spot in the run for the Dragons was a nifty behind the back pass from Pilipovic to Smith Jr for the easy lay in. “We know that Antonio can pass like that. In practice he is always calling the Doncic pass. He is a great passer”, commented Kelvin Omojola. But Rhondorf stayed tough and on the door step of Fellbach as Janne Muller hit a trey and ex Schwenningen guard Alexander Lagerman for a lay in as the Dragons trailed 73-60. Despite a trey by Nik Schlipf, the Dragons continued to execute getting lay in´s by Smith Jr and Lagerman and Fellbach led 76-66 after 30 minutes. “We knew that they were a good team and strong at home. We also knew they would go on a run. They couldn´t stay cold that long. We never got down”, stated Malik Whitaker “We continued to bring energy and our three finally fell. We were getting stops and our good defense led to our offense”, added Kelvin Omojola. The Fellbach Flashers shot 61% from the 2 point area and 41% from the parking lot and had 28 rebounds and 12 turnovers while the Dragons Rhondorf shot 43% from the field and 29% from the parking lot and 31 rebounds and 13 turnovers.

Defensively the Dragons Rhondorf saved their best for last allowing only 11 points, but still couldn´t get over the hump never trailing by less than 5 points as they mustered only 16 points in the last quarter. The Dragons came out with fire going on a 6-2 run to trail Fellbach only 78-72 as Muller and Rahn made lay in´s and Reinhart a floater. However Fellbach made clutch baskets to keep punching back going on a 4-0 run as Jekov made a lay in and Butler a tip in to lead 82-72. Then it was time for the Dragons to punch back as they made key stops and went on a 5-0 run to trail only 82-77 as Mueller made a lay in and Omojola a trey. Mayr and Kazakevicius then traded baskets as Fellbach led 84-79 with 1,23 to play. The Dragons Rhondorf had their opportunities. Brian Butler missed 2 free throws, but Muller came back and missed. Tim Smith Jr then made a lay in with 19 seconds to play as Fellbach still led 85-81. Then Rhondorf forced a turnover to get the ball back with 18,2 seconds, but then coughed up the ball. Whitaker then sealed the win with free throws. “Our bread and butter our defense was key at the end. We remained locked in and disciplined. They were physical and hit tough shots, but we withstood their pressure”, said Malik Whitaker “We didn´t run out of gas. Turnovers hurt us. Good teams like them will make you pay”, expressed Kelvin Omojola. The Fellbach Flashers were led by Malik Whitaker with 27 points. Daniel Mayer, Brian Butler and Jeremy Kolev chipped in with 12 points a piece while the Dragons Rhondorf were led by Tim Smith Jr with 17 points. Marco Rahn added 12 points and Janne Muller 11 points. The Fellbach Flashers shot 46% from the field and 33% from outside and had 42 rebounds and 18 turnovers while the Dragons Rhondorf shot 35% from the field and 23% from outside and had 47 rebounds and 16 turnovers.

Marko Zarkovic Wants The Dragons Rhondorf To Establish A Defensive Identity And Always Be Hungry On The Court

Marko Zarkovic is a Serbian coach that was hired to coach the Dragons Rhondorf in mid season. He has had experience coaching is Estonia and Latvia. He was with the Telekom Baskets Bonn organization from 2020-2024 where he was headcoach of the youth teams U-16 and U-18 and also of the Telekom baskets Bonn 2 team in the Regionalliga. He spoke to germanhoops.com about basketball.

Thanks Marko for talking to germanhoops.com. You are the new coach of the Dragons Rhondorf. How does it feel coming in in mid season to help the team?

Thank you for reaching out! It feels great to work in one of the historic teams in Germany! Dragons are the team with great tradition and great fans! It is an honor for me to work here!

One could say that you are a bit of a fireman coming in. The Dragons aren´t near the bottom, but also not near the top. Do you see yourself as a guy coming in to help save the season?

I believe we have a good team and we can compete with every team in the league. I can just promise I will do my best every day and that is what I expect from the players also.

You have been with the Telekom Baskets Bonn organization with the youth and Regionalliga team. Have you followed the Dragons Rhondorf season?

Yes, I have followed Dragons since I came to Germany, reason is because I always had several players practicing and playing for the Dragons.

I personally have seen little development in the last months. The team is 4-4 since December one. How do you see the current situation of the Dragons Rhondorf?

Like I mentioned, in my opinion we have a good team. My job is to help the team establish identity and gain bigger confidence. When we do 100% of our abilities and play on the same page we will be a much better team.

I feel like the team is simply not playing up to their potential. Could a problem be in their heads? Because the talent is there.

That is the part of the problem for sure. We have to break that mental barrier and move from this situation. I see smart and hard work as only solution for the situation.

Talk a little about your coaching philosophy. How would you describe yourself as a coach?

I like to start with defense, still believe that it wins games. In offense I want to see unselfish team that plays with a lot of confidence. Simple basketball is the best basketball but in the same time most difficult to reach.

Have you worked with some of the young Dragons talent that they have currently on the team`?

Yes, I know big part of the team from before. We worked together in Telekom Baskets Bonn. Only I didn’t know the older players, but the first impression about them is also very positive.

The team has problems with consistency. What is your main goal that you want to achieve right away as new head coach?

I want to establish a defensive identity. That would be the first thing. Second is to raise energy level of the team. We always need to be “hungry” on the court.

The teams defense is just unacceptable the way it has played. What is your biggest goal with trying to clean up the defense?

That players take individual responsibility. We can guard the ball much better. Also, we have to rebound as a team.

The team just doesn´t have the kind of personal like they did last season. I thought it was a big risk going into the season not having depth at the center position. Is there a way the team can become more versatile then just always concentrating on three´s?

We need balance between inside and outside game and even without traditional 5 we can create it if we use our tall guards and wings in a smart way. It is not easy but it is possible

It seems like last season there were more vocal leaders on the team. Can you develop more leadership with this roster?

I will talk with each player individually and tell them what should be their role. Like that we will try to have more clarity and develop our leadership.

What is the status of Tim Smith Jr? Will he play on Saturday or will Daniel Westbrook suit up?

Tim is recovering quickly but we will make that decision before the game. He will play only if he is 100% ready.

On Saturday a very ambitious team with the Fellbach Flashers will be in town. How vital will rebound work be against talented and experienced big men like Daniel Mayr and Brian Butler? The Dragons will have to give more than 100% effort on the boards.

Yes, we are playing against a good team. And we will have to rebound with all 5 players for 40 minutes. Only like that we can neutralize lack of the size. We see it as a challenge that we can overcome.

It would be great if the Dragons Rhondorf can win their first game under your guidance. Will the Dragons concentrate more on themselves or with Fellbach?

We will obviously prepare for our opponents very seriously, but we will focus on ourselves, we want to maximize our potential and play hardest possible. With the support of our fans we can grow and show our best face, like that we can leave the court with heads up, no matter of the result.
