Jordan Roland Enjoys The Special Basketball Culture In Trier And Isn´t Worried About His 3 Point Shooting Percentage After 4 Games

Pic credit: Simon Engelbert

It was 10 very long years for Trier basketball fans as their beloved basketball team Vet-Concept Gladiators Trier had to endure life in the second division Pro A. That last season in the BBL in 2014-2015 was brutal as they finished in 17th place and had to move down. Moving back to the BBL isn´t self evident as teams Like Bremerhaven are in their seventh consecutive Pro A season while other clubs like Giessen and BG Goettingen have been back, but can´t hold the momentum to stay. It is never easy for clubs to reestablish themselves back in the first division. Because of that it is extra refreshing when a club like Vet-Concept Gladiators Trier return and take the BBL by storm as they have with a 4-0 record. They are actually 5-0 including their cup win. The excitement would probably be bigger if there weren’t teams like Wurzburg and Weissenfels who are also unbeaten. Trier basketball was gone from the BBL for a long time and it is very evident that everyone involved is super grateful to be back.

“Basketball life is going great at the moment for us. We have had 4 big wins and beaten well established teams like Alba Berlin and Rostock. You notice right away here during the day to day on the court and in the office that people have wanted to be back in the BBL for a while. Everyone is super excited. One also sees that with our intro video before games that the organization is centered to be back in the BBL”, stressed Jordan Roland (185-PG-1997, college: Northeastern).

The Vet-Concept Gladiators Trier should of already moved up a season ago, but were rudely bounced out of the playoffs by Frankfurt. But last season they were on a mission and finally made it back to the BBL. The way the club has played now, it seems like they have taken the momentum from last season into this season! They kept many players and only added a few pieces including current team top scorer Eli Brooks as well as ultra veteran and winner Urald King who has won titles in 3 different countries.

“For sure. I think that a big part of this has been being able to keep so many players from last season. It is super tough to be able to keep so many players together, but being able to do that has been so important for our success. Adding UK has been so big. He is versatile and so experience. He has been a huge addition for us”, stated Jordan Roland.

Some clubs think big and sometimes that kind of mentality can come back and bite you in the behind. But the The Vet-Concept Gladiators Trier had the correct mentality right from the get go and didn´t think to big and forget what is realistic. Their goal is to win 12 games in the easyCredit BBL. They are already one third of the way to that goal. But isn´t this team better than just winning 12 games?

“The goal is to win 12 games and we are already on a good path to beat that. Usually the goal of a team that moved up is to stay in the league. But we feel like despite the current success, we can´t set the bar higher. Winning 12 games for us was more a base than a lofty goal”, warned Jordan Roland.

To be successful, so many things have to come into place. One has to have the right players and develop a sound team chemistry. That is something that is already cemented, but there are also so many other factors like having the right coach as well as having certain special aspects that makes coming to work every day so much more enjoyable. With Jacques Schneider who had to pay his dues for many years as an assistant in Leverkusen, everything has fallen into place since becoming head coach in 2024. His coaching methods and treasure chest have motivated his players.

“I love to play for coach. I like that he allows us to play fast and gives everyone freedom. He leads us well and keeps us together. Having good chemistry already now has been big for our success. He has been able to get high quality players all on one page and establish a culture. I´m not sure if the treasure chest has been an extra motivation for us to perform better, but everyone wants to win and having the treasure chest aspect is really cool. Being able to take a goal and visualize it is important. We really look forward to it when we win games”, added Jordan Roland.

Back 10 years ago, teams like Alba Berlin and Bamberg were the crème de la crème in Germany and in the 2014-2015 season, Trier did play Alba Berlin tough once losing in OT 86-83, but the other time stunk out the arena losing 91-54 and against Bamberg were swept badly losing 71-64 and the second time being blown out badly 84-44. Those were the days when being a Trier basketball fan was extremely tough, but in 2025 the season isn´t even a month old and they beat both Alba Berlin and Bamberg. Beating Alba Berlin on the road was like extra icing on the cake.

“To be able to win in the Uber arena was huge. That is like a NBA arena. The Alba Berlin organization carry a lot of weight in Germany. It was cool to get the win for some of the ex Alba players on our roster”, commented Jordan Roland.

Another interesting aspect to the The Vet-Concept Gladiators Trier early success has been their ability to win crunch time games. They didn´t just win 1 or 2, but right away 3 in a row

Being able to win so many close games so early in the season says a lot for our continuity. Having that just makes everything feel more comfortable in a situation like in Berlin. We had control against Bamberg and Braunschweig, then lost it, but came back and won. That says a lot for the character of our team”, warned Jordan Roland.

One of the team´s big strengths is their pace as they have demonstrated that they are one of the most high paced teams in the BBL. That they allow 82 points is only normal when they play so high paced. Working on their defense is a daily thing that the club continues to work on. Every player has a role and every guy is important in their own way. But there couldn´t be 2 more key guys than captain Maik Zirbes who has played in the Euroleague and won 15 titles as well as Behnam Yakhchali who can do it all and just knows how to make the crucial plays.

“With all the experience that Maik has, he commands a certain level of respect. He is a great leader and motivates us all. He plays so hard and shows in practice that nobody can stop him. He is an elite inside presence and keeps everyone together. He is also huge off the court hosting. Behnam brings that clutch factor. I remember last season when he hit 2 big three pointers in Munster. He always plays hard and leaves all on the court. He is unselfish and a team first guy”, warned Jordan Roland.

Jordan Roland and Eli Brooks have been a lethal a 1-2 scoring punch at the guard position. Brooks is averaging 16,5ppg, 3,0rpg and 4,8apg while shooting a potent 47% from the parking lot. While Roland is averaging 15,5pp, 3,0rpg and 2,3apf, but is only shooting 28% from outside. 2 seasons ago in Rostock, he was at 43% and last season 38%. He has that same role from last season which is to score, shoot, defend at a high level and be team first.

Eli is a great player. He is also a team first player and totally unselfish. He is a threat in so many ways. He is a great shooter and can create for himself and others. You can´t take one thing away. He really gives us another dimension. I have been content with my game. The most important thing is that we are winning. Of course I would like to be shooting the ball better. I´m confident my shooting will improve. I have been in the high 30´s and 40% my whole career. It has only been 4 games in. I´m not concerned”, warned Jordan Roland.

A big part of Roland´s game is his leadership. He showed in Rostock and last season that he can help move a team up to the easyCredit BBL. In a way he pulled a Chris Carter last season in Trier. He couldn´t have had a better mentor in Chris Carter that has done the magic 4 times helping Vechta, Chemnitz, Rostock and Jena move up to the BBL.

“Chris was huge for me my first year in Rostock. He was a great leader on and off the court. I remember him helping me feel comfortable off the court. He helped me with groceries and getting adapted to the language barrier. He did many of the little things off the court like hosting”, remembered Jordan Roland who will always take himself in a 1-1 battle in practice against Eli Brooks.

Even if the easyCredit BBL regular season takes a 1 week break, the The Vet-Concept Gladiators Trier are not idle, but have a do or die game against the Telekom Baskets in cup play. Bonn has found their groove slowly having a 2 game winning streak after losing the first 2 games. They aren´t a high scoring team, but have defended well allowing only 73 points on average in the first 4 BBL regular season games. Trier have a 5 game winning streak and want to keep it going.

“Bonn is a good defensive team and we are a good defensive team. We just have to be able to play our game. It will be huge if we can play our style. We have a great home crowd. The energy hasn´t worn off. We have to keep the momentum going”, stressed Jordan Roland.

He began his basketball career at Corpus Christi High School (Canada) and also played at Montverde Academy (USA) and Vermont Academy. He then played a season at Vanderbilt University (NCAA) averaging 10.9ppg, 6.7rpg, 1.8apg, FGP: 49.6%, 3PT: 5.6%, FT: 57.6%. He spoke to germanhoops.com after the historical 119-115 Basketball Champions League win over Wurzburg where Jordan Walker exploded for 54 points.

Thanks Simi for talking to germanhoops.com Congrats on the massive 119-115 double OT win over Wurzburg in the Basketball Champions League competition. You were part of history. Where do you rank that with the greatest games you have been a part of?

This game definitely ranks up there as one of the top in my career for sure. Especially in Europe.

If you had lost the game, I´m sure it wouldn´t have had the same kind of meaning despite the 54 point record by Jordan Walker?

I agree Winning always makes games like these mean even more. Our team especially Jordan came up big for us towards the end.

You must of felt pretty well physically after 50 minutes. You were a starter and logged only 23 minutes whereas the other 4 starters logged 38 minutes per average.

I felt good out there. I just wanted to maximize my minutes to help get our first BCL win of this round.

You are a veteran and know what big games can do. Can a win like this make a big impact on your overall season as a team?

I believe so, the last two games we have been playing great basketball and have been able to make the right plays on both ends so I think it will give us good momentum to finish out the season well.

Going in Promeatheas must have been really focused. How big was the revenge factor after losing a tough 79-77 game at home against Wurzburg?

We definitely wanted to get this win as you said last game they came back and hit a big shot at the end to win the game. We had extra motivation for sure.

Wurzburg got off to a quick 4-0 lead off 2 buckets from German big man Hannes Steinbach who only did finish with a 6/3 game. But what was your overall impression of him. Many insiders in Germany say he has NBA potential.

He’s a good player definitely has all the tools and he’s still young so he has time to develop.

The first quarter was tight, but Wurzburg led 19-14. How did you experience the atmosphere in the Wurzburg gym? Did you know that Dirk Nowitzki began his career in the 90´s in that gym?

I didn’t know that at all I knew dirk started in Germany though. It was a good atmosphere and the fans were good too.

Jordan Walker hit a three in the first quarter and had 3 points after 10 minutes. If someone had told you that he would explode for 51 points in the next 40 minutes what would you have thought?

I honestly did not, Jordan is more than capable of having big games as he’s been doing the whole season.

At the break Wurzburg was still ahead 44-39 and Jordan Walker had only 8 points. Was Wurzburg doing anything extra different on defensive coverages on Walker or hadn´t he found his spots so well yet?

Just more ball pressure on the ball and hedging hard on the ball screens with him. Its sometimes just the flow of the game but Jordan adjusted and we all saw what happened next.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Promitheas made a big run thanks to 2 Walker three´s and you tied the game with 2 free throws, but Wurzburg as usual punched back with 2 Zac Seljaas three´s to give them the 77-70 advantage. He is the heart and soul of Wurzburg. What made it so difficult to control Seljaas?

He was a key player for them and hits big shots for them and their team did a good job of finding him.

Promitheas continued to fight in crunch-time of the fourth quarter as Walker made a late three and Greek player Michail Lountzis hit a clutch three. Michael Lewis attempted a three to win the game, but fell short. Talk about the last 2 possessions? You as a team must have been pumped to go into the OT? Did you feel you had the momentum as a team?

We made a run and hit big shots which gave us energy as a team to get stops and I think we just carried that into both overtimes.

Walker obviously had a once in a lifetime game, but talk a little how valuable Wes Iwundu and Jordan Varnado were? Without them you don´t win. What do you appreciate most about their games?

Wes and Jordan are very good players and are key players for our team, because they can do different things on the court and play and guard different positions. They also play hard and play the right way

What was your favorite paly of the game?

The sequence of Jordan walker hitting the back to back three’s and the mike hitting the late three in the 4th quarter.

It is no secret that Jordan Walker would probably be in the NBA if he was a bit taller. Does a game like this open doors for him? I mean there is always the Euroleague and TJ Shorts has shown that a 175cm guy can dominate.

I’m sure many doors will open for Jordan, he’s been playing and scoring the ball at a high level all season and a game like this should give him more respect around Europe and the rest off the world.

Thanks Simi for the chat.

Being Fearless And Confident Has Allowed Javontae Hopkins To Adjust Overseas And Currently Lead The Swiss SBL In Scoring

Javontae Hopkins (183-PG-2001, college: PVAMU) is a 23 year old 183 cm point guard that was born in Norfolk, Virginia and grew up in Texas playing his rookie season with the Lugano Tigers (Switzerland-SBL). He began his basketball career at Fort Bend Travis High School and also played AAU basketball at T.T Elite. He then played 106 games at Tarleton State University (NCAA) from 2019-2023. He then played 1 more season at Prairie View A&M University (NCAA) averaging 14.8ppg, 4.5rpg, 1.9apg, 1.1spg, FGP: 45.0%, 3PT: 26.7%, FT: 62.2%

Thanks Javontae for talking to germanhoops.com. Your playing your first pro season overseas. You came from Virginia to Switzerland. You couldn´t be living in a more beautiful place in Lugano. What do you like most about the country?

What I like most about Switzerland are the people. The people here are so welcoming and are genuinely nice people. They’re very polite and majority of them actually speak great English.

What has it been like playing for the Lugano Tigers. Do you feel that rich tradition within the organization?

I am truly blessed to be able to play for an organization like Lugano Tigers! We aren´t having the best season so far due to some tough losses in our first 12 games, but we fight and play hard every game. The coaches and staff here are greate and want nothing but the best for us players. I am very grateful for the opportunity given to me to play here.

The club is struggling so far. What have been the main reasons for the losing? The defense has given up too many points?

Yes we are struggling a bit but like I said we play hard and fight till the end of each game. We have a very young team with 8 of our 12 players under 20 years old and me being a rookie. I would say we are just unexperienced, but that doesn’t stop us from competing.

You are leading the league in scoring and have needed no adjustment time. What has been your secret to being able to adjust so well?

Playing fearless and confident is the big secret. I believe that has helped me adjust so well this season. Also my teammates and coaches believing in me plays a huge part in it.

How vital has teammate Antonio Ballard been? Has he been like a mentor for you?

Yes I would say Tone has been a mentor for me because he has the most experience playing overseas basketball on our team if not in the whole entire league. His knowledge and leadership has benefited me in numerous ways. I learn something new from him every day.

Let´s talk about your game? You’re a 183cm point guard. If you had to compare your game to a NBA player who would it be?

I watch a lot of Allen Iverson and Brandon Jennings! I try to compare my game to them guys because of how fast, athletic, smart, and fearless they played. Both of them aren’t the tallest but were always the most outstanding on the court. Allen Iverson I’ve been watching since I was in elementary school because he is from around the same area I grew up in and I wanted to be just like him. Brandon Jennings is probably one of the most skilled and craftiest left handed players I’ve ever seen so I like to take pieces out of his game and put them into mine since I´m also left handed.

You’re a player that can fill the stat sheet. What is your biggest strength on the court?

My biggest strength on the court is my speed and athleticism. I have yet to play against or with someone as fast and quick as me. The athleticism I have at just 183cm allows me to play and compete with guys that are taller.

Your shooting very well from outside. What do you still have to make to make the next step as a shooter?

This past summer I worked on my 3pt shooting so much and it is still not where I want it to be. But I can say the hard work has helped because I’m shooting the best I ever have in my entire career at the moment. I want to be shooting around 40% by the end of the season as a point guard.

What kind of a defender are you now and what kind of defender do you still want to become?

I have always been a great pesty defender. In high school I was labeled as both a great defender and scorer then once I went to Tarleton I had a defensive roll to play if I wanted to be on the court so scoring was out of the picture for a long time until I transferred to PVAMU my last year of college where I still had to play great defense to be on the court but my coach also believed in my offensive game. So, I have always had the defensive mindset and always will.

On what areas of your game are you working on most now so you can continue to improve your game?

I am always working on my 3pt shot! I believe developing a great consistent 3pt shot will take my game to the next level.

You played at Tarleton State University (NCAA2) from 2019-2023. What kind of an experience was this. You never averaged more than 6,7ppg in a season. What was your role there?

My first year at Tarleton as a freshman my role was to simply come in and play smart and hard as a back up point guard. Once I got a new coach sophmore year, my role was strictly to guard and be a pest on ball. My coach told me that was the ONLY way I would ever be on the court. So scoring was out of the picture for 4 years.

You had many solid games at Tarleton State University (NCAA2) like 23 points against Northeastern State. What was your fondest moment there on the court?

Probably getting 2 consecutive fast break dunks. It was very cool to be able to do that as a freshman.

You then finished at Prairie View A&M University (NCAA) averaging 14.8ppg, 4.5rpg, 1.9apg, 1.1spg, FGP: 45.0%, 3PT: 26.7%, FT: 62.2%. You had your break through season in the NCAA. How did your game grow in your senior year?

I would say me gaining my confidence back after having 4 terrible seasons at Tarleton helped my game grow my senior year. With also coach Smith believing in me.

How did head coach Byron Smith groom and prepare you best for a professional career?

Coach Smith prepared and put me in the best possible position to become a professional player by believing in me and not giving up on what he saw in me. Forcing me to get in the gym to put up shots, film session on what I need to fix to become a better player, playing against me in shooting drills to better my jump shot. All these things he did helped me prepare for the professional career I have now.

Who won a 1-1 in practice you or Kevin McGaskey?

I actually never played against Kevin 1-1. I’d say to a game of 11, I win 11-9.

Who is the toughest player that you faced that went to the NBA?

Tyrese Maxey! By far the toughest player I have ever faced.

Please name your 5 best teammates of all-time?

Freddy Hicks (Tarleton), Orlando Horton (PVAMU), Isaiah Range (Tarleton), Joshua Hawley (Tarleton), Shamir Bouges (Tarleton). These are my top 5 favorite teammates. My 5 best teammates as players are Freddy Hicks (Tarleton), Montre Gipson (Tarleton), Shamir Bouges (Tarleton), Isaiah Range (Tarleton), Joshua Hawley (Tarleton).

What is your personal NBA Mount Rushmore of past or present heads?

Kobe Byrant, Lebron James, Allen Iverson, James Harden I did my homework.

Your GOAT is Kobe. That is a great choice. Why is he your GOAT?

Yes Kobe is my GOAT. Mainly because of the mentality he had as a player. It was unique, and you rarely see guys in the NBA with that mentality these days.

Did you see the sequel to the classic Coming To America?

I’ve never seen either. I guess now that’s something I have to watch. Looking forward to it.

Thanks Javontae fort he chat.

Jordan Theodore´s Nephew Brought Him Back Love For The Game Again And Wants To Coach When His Playing Days Are Over

Miles Schmidt-Scheuber and Jordan Theodore in Frankfurt, Germany Dec, 2024

If I had to choose a few former Skyliners from the last decade that of course were still playing now and available that I would have liked to have returned back to Frankfurt to help the team as best as possible, I could pick from one hand about 3 players and they would have been a Philip Scrubb, Joe Voigtman or a Jordan Theodore (183-PG-1989, college: Seton Hall). I mean you can never go wrong with these 3 winners who went on to have great careers after helping Frankfurt win the 2016 Fiba Europe Cup. When I saw the Skyliners press release recently that Jordan Theodore would return for a third tour of duty, I was really overjoyed. He might not have had been able to help keep the team in the easyCredit BBL in 2023, but after I saw how good he was moving and playing in the tough loss against Braunschweig minus the 5 turnovers, I´m optimistic that he can turn the season around for the Skyliners. But was his coming back into a precarious situation a no brainer or more of a difficult decision? “I think that it was more difficult. I have a good relationship with Gunnar Wobke and we had been in contact during the season, I wasn´t sure if I wanted to come back. I always love to play. My thinking had nothing to do with the team record, but with me. I had other offers and said no. Coming back to the Skyliners felt good”, stressed Jordan Theodore. His first 2 tour of duties, he was fortunate to be teammates with Skyliner legend Quantez Robertson, but now he is gone and forever will be remembered. It must be very strange for him being without him. “ It is weird. With him gone, now I´m the oldest. Tez was the heart and soul of the team the last years. Now I don´t want to be here with people thinking, I want to replace him. Nobody could ever replace him. I want to show the young guys how the Skyliners way is. Even if I´m back for a third time, I feel new. Just about everyone is gone from the players to the people in the office. It is kind of like a new organization for me. Klaus Perwas is still here and Gunnar as well. The keys to the heart are still here. I have been getting used to the new guys. It has been fun”, said Jordan Theodore. The Skyliner organization has to mean so much to him, but it definitely isn´t the same like almost a decade ago. “Playing for the Skyliners organization has a very special place in my heart. This is the first place where I feel like home. It really reminds me of home. I have that New York feeling here. Everybody speaks English. It just reminds me of home. I have a few places that are close to my home. Frankfurt is top 2. The feeling isn´t the same. 10 years ago, I was a young kid that had to prove himself. Now it is expected of me to be very good. Back then I didn´t know what to expect, but now I have history. The biggest change is Tez not being here. Back in the 22-23 season, I came back because of Tez. I wanted to play one last time with him”, remembered Jordan Theodore.

Jordan Theodore is a 35 year old 184cm point guard from New Jersey playing his 13th professional season and third with the Frankfurt Skylinmers. Last season he began the season with with Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 (France-Betclic ELITE ProA) averaging 13.3ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.9apg, 1.0spg, 2FGP: 54.5%, 3FGP: 28.3%, FT: 73.2%. and finished with Cazoo Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain-Liga ACB) averaging 3.0ppg, 2.1apg; and in the Euroleague: averaged 3.5ppg, 1.1apg. He also has gotten experience playing in countries like Turkey, Puerto Rico, Italy, Greece and Russia. He played 4 years at Seton Hall (NCAA) from 2008-2012. He is back in Frankfurt now and in a way has to save the team. Despite the record and 3 massive opponents in the next 11 days with Ulm, Ludwigsburg and Munich, he is very optimistic that the team will be successful. “To be honest, I really think that we can win all 3 of them. It´s all about us. We have to play a great game for 40 minutes. We have to have a great offensive and defensive game. Anything can happen. It is never about who has the biggest name or best record, but who comes to compete. The young guys are working hard in practice. It´s all on me. Can I get the most out of them and lead them well? We will be ready”, warned Jordan Theodore. He has only been here a short while, and can´t give a real impression of the team yet, but knows what the team has to do in the next games to win. “That is hard to say. I didn´t watch too much of the team before I got here. I know that we have won all the cup games so far. Not having a veteran has been tough, but now I´m here. We are getting better every day. We are competing better. The young players have to learn from their mistakes. We need to grow, but it won´t happen overnight. We will become better. We need to be focused for 40 minutes and play at a high level. We also need good communication and stick together. Basketball should be fun. It isn´t always easy to add a player like me, but I´m not selfish. We have had flashes with my leadership. We have to grow with that”, stressed Jordan Theodore.

He has only been with the club a short while, but he has gotten to know the games of some of his teammates especially the 2 explosive Americans Trey Calvin and Malik Parsons. Does he see a little of him in their play as young players? “I don´t know. They are tremendous players and very athletic. We come from different places. They work hard and are eager to learn. They are gym rats. They are always seeking knowledge. I´m really happy to be with them. I can be ball dominated and I want to contribute at a high level, but at the same time not take anything away from their games”, warned Jordan Theodore. One guy he is really impressed with is Danish champion Malik Parsons who has had huge games and is on the radar of Euroleague teams. “He is very talented. He can score and is very athletic. He can go as far as he wants to. Sky is the limit for him. Calvin and him are better shooters than I was at their ages”, said Jordan Theodore. “Other teammates that he is also dazzled by is the play of 2 hero´s from last season´s Pro A team David Muenkat and Booker Cooplin who are vital parts of the team. “I call Dave the next Tez. He is the heart and soul and can do it all. He is always playing with energy. You can ask him to do anything. He can play 1-5 like Tez did. Booker is a very hard worker and can also do a lot of things. He has been under the radar and now can shine. Both are the kind of guys that you want on a team. They are fighters which is a unique trait to have in today´s game. I´m proud to have them on the team”, added Jordan Theodore. A lot has changed in the game of 2018 NBBL champion Lorenz Brenneke as well as he is continuing to make big steps in his game. “Lorenz was actually hurt when I was here the last time. He is also a unique talent. He is a lefty with a nice touch around the rim. He works hard and is a fighter. He is always the first guy in the gym. He will become great in the next years”, commented Jordan Theodore.

Jordan Theodore is 35 years old and isn´t the youngest anymore, but he still has game. He has been competing and being consistent at a high level for years. Despite the 5 turnovers in the loss to Braunschweig, he looked very good in many other areas of his offensive game. He is confident that he still has much more to offer in the next games. “I work out 1-2 times a day even when I´m not playing basketball. Basketball has brought me therapy my whole life. Whenever I did something bad as a kid or had hardships in my career, I always used basketball as a fuel. I honestly think that you haven´t seen my best yet. I haven´t really played since last May when I was in Spain. I´m just coming back to my game again now. I think that in the next games, I will be even quicker, make better reads and be better defensively”, expressed Jordan Theodore. He has seen a lot in the last 9 years and played in many different leagues. With more experience, he also has grown as a player and added new things. “I can shoot off the dribble better. I knew I would be all over the place in the first games back. I had too many turnovers, but that was because I hadn´t practiced enough with the team yet. I will fix the turnovers”, warned Jordan Theodore. He is also a different kind of leader now than in 2016. It is definitely much more of a challenge now than then. “Now it is harder to lead. When I was younger, I was always a gym rat. I was firey and had responses to Gordy Herbert. But now as an older guy you can´t talk back to the coach. It is not good to do that in front of the young players. I´m always asking questions and am eager to learn. I have been around the game for a long time and have seen so much. If I question a coach now, it isn´t to belittle him, but to ask questions that might make it easier for the younger guys to understand”, stated Jordan Theodore. Some may think that this might be his last destination as a player, but he is hopeful the ride will continue. “I just love the game. 5 years ago, people would ask me if I might coach one day, but I said no. I didn´t want to manage players on a daily level and have to deal with ego´s. But then I began to train my nephew and it brought me so much joy. I never forced the game on him. I always told him, call me when your ready. Then I got that call one day and he told me that he wanted to play. I fell in love with the game again and want to coach when my playing days are over. I feel like I still have to prove myself. I still see myself having 2-3 good more years ahead of me”, warned Jordan Theodore. His zeal for the game is still so strong. “ I enjoy being together with the guys every day and just enjoy everything that comes with it. When your young, you never think about the ride coming to an end. Now I´m at an age where I have to be prepared of teams saying they might not want me because of my age. I really enjoy being like a teacher now. I want to help the young point guards, I want to show them the most that this is how we do it”, laughed Jordan Theodore.

Even if the win of the Fiba Europe Cup is more than 8,5 years ago, the bond to his teammates is still there. He is a very outgoing guy and was one of the leaders on that championship team. It would be strange if he had only contact to a few. “To be honest I talk to all. I have with relationships with all from Mike Mo, Aaron Doornekamp, Sean Armand (even if he was from the 2014-2015 season), Phil Scrubb, Danilo Barthel, Gordie Herbert (He is my guy. He is a mentor for me, we speak all the time), Konsti, Klein, John Little, Max Merz, Johannes Richter, Tomas Dimsa and Garai Zeeb (he is my little bro). I have spoken to Joe Voigtmann in a while, but played against him since then”, said Jordan Theodore. He and Quantez Robertson have birthdays only 5 days apart and are like family. A few days ago Tez turned 40 years old. It is only obvious that he has the most special relationship to him. “He is my dog. I love that guy. He is texting me now as were talking. I have so much to say to him, but then again not enough to say. He is a great leader and captain. You always pick a leader after you won a title. He showed that by remaining in Frankfurt after the Fiba title. I told him after to go to Turkey to get some money, but I´m so happy he stayed. He said no. He said that Frankfurt was in his heart. I´m so honored to stand in the arena and look up at his jersey”, stated Jordan Theodore. With Christmas around the corner, he only has one wish for Christmas and that is peace everywhere. Jordan Theodore wasn´t able to save the Skyliners in 2022-2023, but now he can get revenge on that season and hopefully bring back some of that magic from the 2015-2016 season. I´m confident he can, because this guy still has much game left in his tank. It is only logical that he also wants to make his good friend Tez proud.

Playing Defense Comes Natural To Bryant Thomas(Inter Bratislava) And He Knows He Can Always Rely On It

Bryant Thomas (203-C-1999, college: C-N) is a 25 year old 203cm forward from North Carolina playing his rookie season with Inter Bratislavia (Slovakia-Tipos SBL). He began his basketball career at South Mecklenburg high school. He then played a season at the University Of North Carolina-Charlotte. He then played at Carson-Newman University (NCAA2) from 2019-2023 averaging 10.1ppg, 7.8rpg, 2.1bpg, FGP: 52.6%, 3PT: 41.2%, FT: 72.5% and 14.6ppg, 6.9rpg, 1.2apg, 2.3bpg, FGP: 58.5%, 3PT: 23.5%, FT: 74.3% in his last 2 seasons. He spoke to germanhoops.combefore a ENBL game against Bamberg.

Thanks Bryant for talking to germanhoops.com. Your playing your second pro season and first with Inter Bratislava (Slovakia-Tipos).What has it been like playing with this organization that has won 13 titles? What have you enjoyed most about the organization?

It’s great, historically they’ve been a winning team so I’m trying to help my team get back to that winning atmosphere.

After being in Serbia and Bulgaria, you now are playing in Slovakia. How have you taken in the culture of Bratislava? Is it like a culture shock compared to Charlotte, North Carolina ?

it’s been but yet I’m still trying to embrace it and enjoy the experience it’s not everyday you go to Slovakia so I´m definitely embracing it. it’s completely different from America forsure and of course North Carolina but it´s different and new but embracing it.

Inter Bratislava (Slovakia-Tipos) last won a title 5 years ago. Do you feel that need to win again from the organization? How high are the expectations?

Yeah of course winning a championship is always the main goal & expectations from everyone is always high because all teams a wants to win.

The club has a good mix of Americans and Slovakian players. What exactly is your role on the team? Are you something like the defensive anchor?

Defense is definitely is my strong suit but also catching and shooting and finishing around the rim will help my team on the offensive side.

What has it been like being teammates with Dontay Caruthers and Isaiah Cousins? How important is their veteran leadership and what do appreciate most about their games?

theyre cool individuals. They’re highspeed game style is great for our team and a player like myself. They add a winning atmosphere to our team and does what it takes to try to get us wins every night.

What has it been like being teammates with Justin Mccall? He is a great defensive player like you. How do you profit most from his game?

He is also a cool individual, he is a super athletic player and who can do a little bit of everything having a player on our team that can defend and do a little bit ofeverything is always great to play along side of.

Let´s talk about your game. You’re a 203cm center. If you had to compare your game to an NBA player who would best fit the description?

Hmm…NBA comparisons maybe Pascal Siakam / Jaren Jackson / Evan Mobley.

You’re a scorer and rebounder and can block shots. What other strengths does your game incorporate?

Definitely catching and shooting.and my quickeness for my size gives me an advantage when I’m on the court

You’re a very good three point shooter. How would you describe the current development of your shot. Do you see yourself increasing your outside shooting volume in the future or does it depend on the situation and what the defense gives you?

Depends on what role my team needs for me but overtime I created a shot for myself and it just kind of took time to train to become a better shooter.

You’re an incredible defender and shot blocker. Where would you put your defensive game at the moment? Are you an elite defender yet or still working to become one?

I would say my defense is just something that kind of comes natural for me when in doubt I know I can always rely on my defense

On what areas of your game are you working on most now so you can continue to improve your game?

Becoming more of a consistent shooter and also more turnaround shots from the post and in the paint

Last season you played with BC Spartak Pleven (Bulgaria-NBL) averaging 9.9ppg, 5.4rpg, Blocks-2 (1.3bpg), FGP: 64.1%, 3PT: 37.3%, FT: 74.5%; and in the ENBL averaged 11.2ppg, 4.4rpg, 1.6apg, 1.2spg, FGP: 65.2%, 3PT: 45.5%, FT: 73.3%. What do you remember being your wake up call to being a rookie overseas where you knew that you were far away from home?

Umm a wake up call would be me traveling to tarty playing in a different country for the first time

You had an incredible 20/9 game against Cherno More with 8 blocks. Could you imagine ever achieving a triple double with blocks?

Yeah I could imagine it I used to get triple doubles with blocks in high school haha

What was it like being teammates with ex NBA player Rodney Purvis? Did you guys gel well? Your both from North Carolina.

He was cool. A great scorer

You played 2 seasons at the The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (NCAA) playing 10 games. Despite not playing many games, what positives did you get from this experience?

Just the college experience playing division 1 it was all a learning experience honestly I was fairly new to the game.

You played at Carson-Newman University (NCAA2) from 2019-2023. You improved your scoring each season. How did you grow as a player there? What kind of player were you when you arrived and what player when you left?

Through my head coach their simplifying the game for me. I didn’t really have a game at the time. I was athletic could play defense and could hit a open shot here and there but I worked created an inside game there. I had a feel for the game at the time when I first started but didn’t have a solidified game.

You won the SAC title in 2021. What memories do you have of that run and what was so special about the team?

It was great we had players that all excelled in their role and did their role perfect that led us to win the conference championship that was a surreal moment for sure.

You had many great games against Lees-Mcrae, Wingate and Mars Hill. What was your greatest game in the NCAA?

Wingate for sure. I was feeling good I felt like no one could guard me lol

How did head coach Chuck Benson groom and prepare you best for a professional career?

I would say he did a good job.. More of the aspects of knowing how to be successful at doing little as things that means much later in life than just basketball. Those characteristics I built helped me become who I am today without even knowing it at the time.

Who won a 1-1 in practice you or Ivan Hadzic?

We used to play 1-1 in the post multiple times. Ivan had his days and I had mine.

Who is the best player that you ever battled on the court that reached the NBA?

Coby White

Please name your 5 best teammates of all-time?

Ej bush

Tripp Davis

Ren Dyer

Luke Brenegan

Jon Davis

Please name your NBA Mount Rushmore?

Kobe Bryant

Kevin Durant

Stephen Curry

Hakeem olajuwon

Giannis

Who is your GOAT?

Kobe Bryant

Did you see the sequel to the classic Coming To America? Shouldn´t they have left it alone?

I haven’t seen the part 2 but I definitely think they should left it alone everything doesn’t need a sequel.

Thanks Bryant for the chat.

Michael Nwabuzor Is Hungry To Use The NM1 In France As A Continued Stepping Stone Up The Basketball Ladder

Even when I´m on vacation, I can´t totally turn off the basketball switch. I will always find something to do in the sparse time that I have during holiday. Over the autumn holidays, in Germany, my family and I took a short 4 day trip to the Saarland part of Germany in the western part which is close to France and Luxemburg. I usually check if there are any players playing in the area I´m in, so there could be a possibility of a friendly get together. On the first day, we visited the incredible Saar Polygon in Saarlouis and I just couldn´t refrain from meeting German Regionalliga legend Ricky Easterling. I had covered him many times in the last decade and interviewed him 14 times and gave him 2 article titles from game reports. It was always a pleasure to talk with him and watch him demonstrate his mid range shot to perfection. We also wanted to visit the pretty old French city Metz. Here I also couldn´t pass up checking the roster and saw that they actually played in the NM1 which is the third division. Indeed there was a player on the club that I knew with Michael Nwabuzor (188-G-1996, college: NMHU). I had never ever met him in my life, but interviewed him 7 times in his career. Last season, I was denied seeing him play for the first time as he was released early in the season by the Artland Dragons and couldn´t see him play in Frankfurt. But now we would finally meet. My wife let me off at the training facility in which an old aircraft hanger was used and saw the team practice. Nwabuzor was laboring a minor injury and getting treatment. We spoke about the game and his future. After practice we posed for pics and he drove me back top the center of town so I could do some sightseeing with my family. Our first interview had been in 2019 when he was laboring in the German Regionalliga with BG Dorsten. It is always better late than never to meet. I will always associate him with Lebron James when I hear his name, because he scored 17 points against him in a Drew League game in 2022 in Los Angeles. “Yes that is true. Better late than never. It´s nice to meet you finally. I associate you with eurobasket when I hear your name”, stressed Michael Nwabuzor.

Miles Schmidt-Scheuber and Michale Nwabuzor in Metz, France

Before coming to Metz this season, he began last season in the German Pro A with the Artland Dragons. Last season his stay with the Artland Dragons was short as he played only 7 games averaging 9.3ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.6apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 36.0%, 3FGP: 22.2%, FT: 81.0%. The club didn´t have a great start. Was he possibly seen as having been the scapegoat for the team´s misery? “I don’t think I was a scapegoat, I think the team just got off to a rough start and I happened to be the lead guard. It’s part of the business and they felt like a change needed to be made”, stressed Michael Nwabuzor. Ifeel like the team gave up too soon on his game. They brought in Buzz Anthony who had a great season and helped the team remain in the league. I definitely think the team could have had a turnaround with him still remaining. “ I definitely felt I could have made a difference”, warned Michael Nwabuzor. He was fortunate to have been able to play together with basketball dino Brandon Thomas who at age 40 still plays like he is a young buck at the age of 30. “BT! I Iremember BT as a knockdown shooter and competitor always giving some wisdom. I learned a lot from him in my stint in Artland. He was a real Professional”, remembered Michael Mwabuzor. It then took him numerous months to find a gig and that off-time where there are no games, is a real difficult time for every player. It can really play with your mind. “It took a long time and it definitely was a tough time because I believed I was ready to help a team immediately in the same league, if not somewhere else. Sometimes that is just how it goes but in this same process you can’t lose faith in your game or your ability to get a job. The time while waiting built up my mental fortitude in a way that cant be accessed without going through the adversity”, said Michael Nwabuzor. He then found a new team in Africa with Bangui Sporting Club (Central Africa-D1) averaging 8.0ppg, 5.3rpg, 5.3apg, 1.0spg, FGP: 46.7%, 3PT: 22.2%, FT: 66.7%. “My experience with Bangui SC in the BAL was my second year playing in this league. This experience was very different from my first year where I had more of a scoring role. Overall, I think I would have enjoyed it just a bit more if we won more games but I was grateful to be playing after waiting for so long”, added Michael Nwabuzor. He was teammates with versatile Curtis Hollis who played his last game in Europe in January 2020 and since then never returned back until this season having made a name for himself in Canada. Why didn´t a player with his abilities return sooner? “ Curt’s game fits any market, just have to find the right situation for him and I think he has a good chance right now while playing in Finland.”, commented Michael Nwabuzor.

This season the prolific scorer who would take himself over a Brandon Thomas in a battle of 1-1 is having a new challenge in France with Metz Basket Club (France-NM). The team is very new having been founded in 2020 and moved up from the N2 division last season. I was shocked when I saw he was playing in division 3 France, but hey talented guards seem to be on every corner in Europe. “, I feel like I was overlooked but everybody is overlooked. I just have to continue to showcase my talents, the right club will come”, expressed Michael Nwabuzor. Currently the team is 2-4 and he had a minor injury and will be back in action soon. The NM-1 league is definitely a league that can compete with third divisions in other countries. “N-1 basketball is competitive and respectable basketball that has many legit professionals. I think that because it’s a 3rd division it’s overlooked but good ball is being played”, stressed Michael Nwabuzor. His role is exactly what it has been everywhere else he has played which is scoring. “My role is more than just scoring. Playmaking, playing defense, being a leader are some of the others”, said Michael Nwabuzor. You find really skilled players in the NM-1 league and he has 2 really talented teamamtes with French guard Etienne Ory and American Amar Smith who are a big part of the team. “Etienne and I create a lot of open shots for each other. Always nice to have good chemistry with your backcourt mate. He likes to shoot and set the table while I like to create, shoot and score. Amar extremely valuable. He’s our paint protector, best rebounder and one of our main scoring options. A player with those talents and responsibilities is always valuable to a team”, stated Michael Nwabuzor. As the ex University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (NCAA) guard is driving me back to the city, we talk about basketball and how his grind has been. He sees himself now in his prime and is still so hungry to keep moving up the basketball ladder. His 2 biggest goals are one´s that many players share. “ I would say, win as many games as possible and be playing in Pro A or Pro B next year”, warned Michael Nwabuzor. His team´s goal is to stay in the league. If he can help accomplish that and put up big stats, then I´m sure he will get a new opportunity next season in a higher league. I would like to see him get a second chance in Germany again in the Pro A or even easyCredit BBL. This guy can definitely play and in pre season exploded for 28 points in a game against French Pro A team Nancy where he was the best man on the floor which had ex NBA player Chris Clemons and talented Isaiah Washington who played 2 seasons of BBL in Germany with Frankfurt and Wurzburg. No matter what happens, he will just continue to grind, because that is what he has always done in his pro career overseas. “The love for the grind, the ups and downs of it are still there if not stronger. I thank God for allowing me to still be able to perform at a high level”, warned Michael Nwabuzor.
