With the majority of the Beko BBL teams complete and in the swing of things practicing since weeks, the Fraport Skyliners started later into the 2015-2016 pre-season and are still searching for two import positions at the point guard and shooting guard position and while most teams can boast some well-known new players, the best press and show off material that the 2004 BBL champion Fraport Skyliners can boast in this young off season is the further consistent development of one half of the twin towers Johannes Voigtmann who will play at the 2015 Euro and in 20 years be able to tell his grand children that he played together with NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki and NBA star in the making Dennis Schroeder. Other than that the Fraport Skyliners are looking at some current uncertainty, but all that can be erased if head coach Gordon Herbert has that right endearing magical touch again and is able to bring in that right mix of NCAA lottery picks to the roster. The most positive news that the Fraport Skyliners have going for themselves is that they have kept many players from last season with the big three Germans of Johannes Voigtmann, Danilo Barthel and Konstantin Klein who will have an even bigger responsibility this season for the club. The organization also held on to their three imports Quantez Robertson, Aaron Doornekamp and Mike Morrison and also have retained the next generation of young Germans with Niklas Kiel, Max Merz and Stefan Ilzhoefer, so chemistry will be there come October second when the club opens up the season in Bremerhaven against ex head coach Muli Katzurin. The club also has new point guard Garai Zeeb who is a very interesting player that will mostly play for the farm team and NBBL team and the club also will continue to bring along young big man prospect Armin Trtovac. One thing is for sure nothing is ever dull when Gordon Herbert is around and if it ever does get tedious, just ask him about his Michael Jordan encounter at the 1984 Olympics.
Barry Johnson(I Give It My All Everytime On The Court)
Barry Johnson is a 183cm guard that is in Germany chasing his basketball dream and playing with a touring team called Howard Hoops at the moment. He played college ball at Clarendon CC (JUCO), W.Texas A&M (NCAA2) 28 games: 3.9ppg, 1.1rpg and at Wayland Baptist (NAIA) 34 games: 14.8ppg, 2.9rpg. Awards and achievements in his basketball career have been LSC Tournament Semifinals -13, SAC Regular Season Runner-Up -14, SAC Tournament Finalist -14, and SAC All-Tournament Team -14. He spoke to German Hoops about his experiences in Germany
Barry thanks for talking to German Hoops. Welcome to Germany. Its 10:30 at night and after a 102-90 loss to TV Langen you had to walk 20 minutes to the train station to catch a short train back to Frankfurt and then take a bus to Offenbach. I guess it all comes with the territory when your trying to get a professional contract
Yes it is very different but can´t complain. Do what I have to do.
You are in Germany this week on a touring team called Howard Hoops that play every night in Langen tonight and then in Kronberg, Gelsenkirchen and Schwelm. On a team the goal is too win, but is your goal not more to put up the best numbers to help you get a contract
I mean, a little of both. Winning is always good and people like winners. But also I want to do the best I can to help with that process.
Howard Hoops lost to German Regionaliga team TV Langen 102-90 playing more street ball while TV Langen played more structured basketball. How tough was it playing on a team of strangers after having the first practice 5 hours earlier?
It was very tough. Just barely meeting these guys today and practiced for 1 hour its hard to get used to playing with someone that fast and to know how to play off of each other.
Howard Hoops had problems on one on one defense and are very small down low. What adjustments does the team need to do in the next games to get some wins?
I think everyone on the team has good defense and ability to not get eaten on one on one. I think the problem was more of being tired. We flew over to Frankfurt from the USA and had a couple hours before we had to practice and then a game the same night. We will be better next game for sure.
TV Langen has a young roster with American rookie Ian Sheldon and German veterans Maxim Schneider and Yannick Schiktanz. What was your first impression of German basketball?
They play really good structured basketball. No one was trying to do too much, just a lot of passing and moving around. It was good.
How happy were you with your first game overseas. What did you do well and what do you still want to do better in the upcoming games?
I wasnt happy at all. Could have done a lot better. I missed a few shots that I normally make.
How thankful are you that tour maker Ronald Howard chose you for his team? Were you able to take some of his barking from the sidelines to heart when you were on the court?
I am very appreciative of Ron for the opportunity. Its always good to know that there are good people in the world who care about helping others and not looking for benefits in return.
If you could describe your game in a few sentences and to why you could help any professional team now what words would you chose?
I am a very tough player. Good point guard that can score easily but also get team involved. Really good 3 point shot. Any team would be good to get me because I give it my all every time on the court and I am good in the community.
You played professionally in Mexico this season averaging 25ppg. If nothing comes out of this basketball trip in Germany what will be the next step for Barry Johnson?
Yes I played pro in Mexico where I averaged 25ppg and 5apg. My highest scoring game was 42 points. Hopefully I get a look in Germany with a team but if not maybe I can get a contract in Australia
What is the state of Lebron James in 2015? Do you think that he will ever be mentioned in the same breath as a Michael Jordan?
Lebron is a VERY good player. He can do it all. Him, Jordan, and Kobe are all the same caliber of player.
What was the last movie that you saw?
The last movie I watched was ” Straight Outta Compton” a biography about an old rap group NWA. It was really good.
Thanks Barry for the chat.
Thanks for the interview I hope to have some luck getting interest with teams. If anyone is interested and want more info or film they can contact me on facebook at Barry Johnson or by email at barrykeairjohnson@yahoo.com

Devin thanks for talking to German Hoops. Where are you at the moment and how has your summer been?
Currently in Austin and my summer has been great.
The last three summers you were signed by Frankfurt, Kalev and Kangoeroes Basket Willebroek in Belgium. This summer however you are still unsigned in mid August. How has the summer signing process been for you? Not enough offers or not good enough offers that have come your way on the table?
The summer signing process has been good. Difference in this summer and past summers I have chosen not to sign as early and kind of weigh my options. There have been decent offers on the table but not quite what I am looking for right now.
Are you getting a little nervous now that the summer has been dragging on and you still have not found security with a team for the 2015-2016 season?
As of now I’m not getting too nervous because I am in contact with a few teams and I’m sure something good will come out of it. Right now In my career I would just like to go to the right situation.
Giordan Watson( Usak Sportlif Turkey-BS) I’ve Had A Roller Coaster Career So To Be Able To Play In Arguably The Best Domestic League In Europe Is Amazing
Giordan Watson is a 29 year old 178cm guard from Southfield Michigan that will be playing in Turkey this season for Usak Sportlif (Turkey-BSL). He played the last two seasons for CS Energia Rovinari Targu Jiu (Romania-Liga Nationala). He is an unselfish player who gets others involved but also has the ability to score if needed. He sparks the team with passing and ball movement and is a great defender. He played at Central Michigan from 2004-2008 and in his senior season he played 31 games averaging 16.4ppg, 2.4rpg, 4.5apg, 1.9spg, FGP: 41.7%, 3Pts: 38.6%, FT: 75.0%. As a rookie he played for the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven playing 33 games averaging 10.1ppg, 2.7rpg, Assists-5(3.8apg), 1.1spg, FGP: 47.7%, 3PT: 32.1%, FT: 73.4%. In 2009-2010, he played for the Giants Noerdlingen (Germany-ProA) playing 17 games: 15.2ppg, 3.3rpg, Assists-4(5.2apg), 1.4spg, FGP: 48.9%, 3PT: 30.7%, FT: 72.7. He led the team into the Eurochallenge final 4. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball and his new challenge in Turkey.
Giordan thanks for talking to German Hoops. Where are you at the moment and how was your summer?
Hey Miles, I’m currently in Turkey, at training camp with my team. Summer was cool, seeing my family and friends after a long season was amazing.
It seems like ages ago, but it was only four months ago when you were in Turkey playing the Eurochallenge Top 4 reaching a third place. Are there still plays vivid in your head or is that a distant memory?
You never forget things like that, but now it’s all about moving forward and achieving new goals. Memories like that become special when the playing days are over but not when you are trying to make more special moments.
You won one title with CS Energia Rovinari Targu Jiu (Romania-Liga Nationala) the cup in 2014. How would you summarize your two seasons there?
It was a great experience there. I grew as a player and point guard, made life long friends, and achieved memorable things there. Everything wasn’t beautiful but I have positive memories from my time there.
After strong seasons in lower leagues Iceland and Finland, you came to Romania in 2013. With what kind of feelings did you go to Romania? Did you feel like this was perhaps one of your last chances to recommend yourself for a higher league?
Going to Romania honestly was a 2 year process. I knew the team had high aspirations to play internationally and that is something I liked. Winning the cup my first season allowed us to play in EuroChallenge, so I came back the next season. The second season was all about getting European exposure. I needed this to get back to the level of basketball I felt I was capable of playing at. I think my plans and goals worked out well, even though leaving a team in Romania I had a good relationship with was not the easiest.
You played the last two seasons in Romania for CS Energia Rovinari Targu Jiu (Romania-Liga Nationala). How important do you view these two years in the further development of Giordan Watson the basketball player?
It was great. I learned a lot from both coaches I had. My second year head coach, Antonis Constantinides was amazing. He really pulled the best out of me without knowing. I’m sure if you ask him he says he knows, haha, but he really helped a lot.
Congrats on the job with Usak Sportlif (Turkey-TBL) This is another step in your career and compariable in skill to the German BBL. How responsible was your stellar play in Romania for getting this job?
Thanks. It’s a blessing from God honestly. I’ve had a roller coaster of a career to say the least, so to be given an opportunity to play in arguably the best domestic league in Europe is amazing. The success we had in EuroChallenge did wonders, and having the Final Four in Trabzon, Turkey really opened doors for me. I think if the Final Four was anywhere else, I might not be here today. It allowed a different set of eyes to see me play, and I think my game is more respected when watched as supposed to stats or video.
You will be turning 30 soon. You are in your best basketball age. Can we await Giordan Watson to make the next step in Turkey on the court?
At this age, I feel I have a great understanding of the point guard position, being a leader and understanding my game. I have goals for this season, and I plan to take full advantage of this opportunity.
How do you feel basketball wise? Do you feel like you can take your game up another notch at age 30?
I feel good, body feels great and I’m ready. Really not much more to say, I’ve been waiting too long to get back on this level, it’s something I tell myself daily, so I have to take advantage.
You are in Usak Turkey now which is between Izmir on the coast and Ankara inland. What has been your first early impressions of your new second home Turkey?
Turkey is cool. I often have to force myself to embrace new places because I will easily practice, eat, and sleep! I know the history hear is rich, so I’m enjoying learning from my teammates and embracing this new culture.
What was your first dish in Turkey? Do you see yourself eating the rich Turkish dishes or stick to the local Mcdonalds?
McDonald’s? Haide Miles… I’m generally a picky eater, but the Turkish food has been really good so far! I’ll try anything once, and so far, so good.
How excited are you to be playing with guys like Sean Marshall, Tyren Johnson, Khem Birch and high scoring rookie Dangelo Harrison. Do you see yourself lending your European experience to some of these guys?
Well, our roster has changed some. No Sean and no Tyren, but I’m excited to play with Dangelo and Khem. An athletic big guy and a shooter on the wing are pieces a point guard will love. They are younger guys, so anything I can do to help, I will.
What do you see your role being? They seem to be grooming you as the starting point guard?
Point guard is tricky, every game has its own personality, so you have to feel that as fast as possible. I think it will be to control tempo, play good defense, and score when needed or available. Generally, I need to be myself on the court.
What strength of your game do you feel will be most important for you to be able to have a great season?
I really think just being myself and playing how I play will be enough. That doesn’t come without of that extreme focus and hard work, but being an unselfish point guard, that embraces defense and can score usually travels well.
It is a shame that you haven´t played in Germany anymore since 2009 after stints in Bremerhaven and Nordlingen. Do you feel like you are a bit off the radar and interest of German teams?
My rookie year was wild. We had a very talented team but could not turn it into wins. Going to Nordlingen probably wasn’t the best decision looking back but at the time, it was late in the season and I had just left some D-league opportunities, and I needed a team. It has all played into my maturity as a player/person, so I don’t regret it at all.
How much will you miss American Porter Troupe? Did he become like a brother to you in your two seasons in Romania?
P is my guy, we still talk all the time. He has played there a few seasons, and helped me out a lot in Romania. I was blessed to have great teammates in Romania.
What do you see the Detroit Pistons doing in the NBA this season?
I’m more concerned with my Detroit Lions right about now, it’s football season! Nfc North champs, easy.
What is the state of Lebron James in 2015? Will he ever be mentioned in the same breath as a Michael Jordan?
They aren’t comparable, honestly. I think people just need to respect greatness in different ways and stop debating who is better. Lebron can dominate games in a way Jordan didn’t, and vice versa. Lebron haters need to look in the mirror and chill.
What was the last movie that you saw?
Southpaw. It was a really good movie!
Thanks Giordan for the chat.
Will Barnes(Weissenhorn Youngsters) Germany Is All I Know Professionally And I Really Do Love Playing Here

In 2012-2013 he played at Lee (NAIA) playing 34 games: 20.0ppg, 4.1rpg, 2.6apg, FGP: 50.3%, 3PT: 41.0%, FT: 77.7%. Last season as a rookie he played for the Finke Baskets playing 29 games: Score-3(18.8ppg), 3.5rpg, 3.4apg, FGP: 64.3%, 3PT: 37.2%, FT: 75.8%. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.
Congrats Will on signing with German Pro B team Weissenhorn. How happy are you stay a third year in Germany?
Hello Miles, thanks for the wishes and the interview! I am very happy to be back in Germany with Weißenhorn for my 3rd season. It’s a great opportunity for me to prove myself again that I’m healthy and help out a club full of young German players.
It was a tough summer for you with rehabbing your injury and not getting signed very quickly. What lessons did you learn this summer from basketball and life in general?
Yes this summer was tough for me. I had to remain very confident and strong mentally to battle the self doubt. I was constantly training in the weight room and gym to get back fit. I mainly learned to always trust in my hard work and career achievements. I had to remind myself that I’ve achieved a lot in my career and to not get too down about me not being signed early.
Recently in an interview with me you stated that many teams were keeping their distance because of your injury. How tough was the summer in general for you having to get to 100% again and not getting signed right away?
It was tough but it just made me even hungrier. I worked hard to get back healthy. It was a real grind to get my knee and body back fit! I just had to stay confident that in the end, everything would work out and I would be in a good situation.
So now you can truthfully say that you are 100% and ready to go with Weissenhorn?
Yes, I am 100% ready to go. We just finished up our first day of practices. I feel great. Just have to get back in the rhythm and get back in game shape.
Did you have any other offers or did you pretty much take this offer because it was already so late in the transfer period?
I had offers in other markets but in the end, Weißenhorn was a great situation for me to go with. Germany is all I know professionally and I really do love playing here. People show me so much love and support. It was definitely the right decision.
How do you block out of your head that going to Weissenhorn isn´t a step back in your career?
I don’t think it’s a step back at all. It may be for those who simply look at the fact that I am now in the pro B league. But in my first day here, I see the amazing structure and professionalism of the Ratiopharm Ulm organization. The club is extremely successful and full of great people. Being in this winning, positive environment makes my decision so much easier. And I am being exposed to some great coaches and who knows what could happen in the future. I just have to remain hungry and focused.
Have you talked to head coach Danny Jansson yet? If yes what have been your first impression of him?
Yes, Coach Jansson is a great guy and coach. I love his style. He’s very feisty and hungry. That mentality will spread throughout our team and help us greatly this season. We’ve already talked about how important our relationship will be with this team. I see nothing but great things happening.
Do you see as having a big statistical season going hand in hand with winning games?
No. I learned that my rookie season in Paderborn. I had explosive numbers and was considerd a top 3 guard in pro A that season. Yet we struggled! I won’t be focusing on stats, I’m focusing on playing a winning style of basketball, being a leader, and simply getting better individually. Nothing is more important than winning games and being successful.
How excited are you to be working with young Germans this season. Do you see yourself as a mentor in only your third professional season?
I’m very excited to be with this young group. They all are great talents with hungry attitudes. From day one I am embracing my leadership role and will mature greatly from playing with this team.
You also might be able to practice with ratiopharm Ulm on occasion. How important will you see these experiences this season when you can showcase your talent with the top players in the BBL which you didn´t have in Paderborn or Hamburg?
It will be very important for me personally. Just getting to play with or against such great players at that level will be great for my game. I always embrace playing against great competition and the lessons learned from these type of experiences. If I am needed to help in practice or in games, I will bring my best attitude and work ethic. And be ready to learn!
What will be the first meal that you took in when you set foot in Germany?
The first meal I had was Italian in the city of Ulm! It was great!
What was the last movie that you saw?
Straight Outta Compton. It was a great movie. I highly recommend it!
Thanks Will for the chat.
Kris Douse(Cuxhaven) Playing Against Bremerhaven Was Something I Needed To Chase For The Year When I’m In The Gym I’m Going To Be Thinking About What Player’s On That Level Are Doing
Kris Douse is a 29 year old 198cm forward from Toronto, Canada that is playing for Regionaliga team Cuxhaven on a try out.He played at Laurinburg (N.C.) Institute while Fraport Skyliner Quantez Robertson played at Laurinburg (N.C.) prep. He started his college career at Nebraska (NCAA) and then played two seasons at Delaware State. As a senior he played at Point Park (NAIA) playing 27 games: 20.1ppg, 12.6rpg. He spoke to German Hoops after the exhibition game against the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven.
Kris welcome back to Germany. After three seasons in the German Regionaliga with Aschersleben, Limburg and Euskirchen where you put up big stats, you get a try out with Cuxhaven. Is that not kind of an insult when considering you are good enough to play in higher leagues in Germany?
I think sometimes numbers can be hard to judge and considering cuxhaven just was in the Pro A I think they aren’t so easy to impress with just statistics I believe they want to know whoever they bring in personally. I feel they are more interested in bringing in the right personality then just talent and I feel that is a positive thing
What kind of experience have the first days in Cuxhaven been with the team? Does one notice the sadness still that the city went from being a Pro A team to a Regionaliga team from one day to the next?
I really like the city it’s beautiful and reminds me a bit of a city I played in when I was in the UK at Plymouth as far as The environment I think it’s been extremely hard on Cuxhaven fans because they are diehard fans and they bleed cuxhaven but I also believe the performance we displayed today had people a lot more enthusiastic but I can’t lie I wanted to win the game against Bremerhaven
Cuxhaven has four Croatians on the team. Have you felt more team basketball on the team with these guys on the team?
Well this is only my third day here but they bring their own style and personality to the team I love the toughness they bring to the team today showed me them as well as the other guys on the team are warriors and have my ultimate respect
How well do you feel that you have been harmonizing with Deon Mitchell who played at Northern Iowa? This is also a guy that on paper seems to be able to play at a higher level.
Ahhhh Deon is a hell of a player with an incredibly bright future ahead of him and what I like most about his game is that for a young player he is really mature and confident out there on the court and he is definitely a spectacular talent and a joy to play with
You have played for so many teams in Germany played in the UK, Cyprus and Iceland that it seems like you have no problems adjusting to a new situation. What is your main goal besides getting a contract for the season?
I just want show my improvement I thank God every day for taking me to Cyprus and showing me a high level of basketball. It changed my approach to the game and ultimately led to me working my tail off this summer in a way I never have before I just want to get another shot at that high level again sometime in the future and show I can play with the big dogs
Do you see yourself having a big season like in Limburg or is the talent level to high in Cuxhaven?
I feel I can have an amazing season here and win statistically I’m not so worried about I feel that I’ve shown on multiple occasions I can fill up the hole at this level but I want to show that in a great program such as Cuxhaven I can win and I know that I’m better than I have ever been
You were down by four points at halftime in a test game to BBL team Bremerhaven, but lost 85-62 and you held your own with 14 points. What kind of experience was this for you?
I loved it and would like to thank both Cuxhaven and Bremerhaven for giving me an opportunity just to be a part of that game and matching my talents with the best in Germany and it was a hell of an experience
Did this really heighten your confidence level knowing you can play with BBL players?
My confidence right now is at a whole different level and it just makes me want to work harder because I still see that I can get better in so many ways. I’m so excited for whatever journey basketball takes me on this season I am going to be ready in a big way
Besides trying to help your team, make right decisions and contribute, were you able to pick up things from the BBL players or were you too focused on your own team?
I’m a student of the game and I enjoy learning I’m always trying to pick up little things to add to my own understanding of the game especially since that’s where I would love to be someday but what I took notice to the most was the intensity they bring on the defensive end. It is really really something they play with such a high level of energy which made it easier on me to match it and push myself to try to play on that same level of passion it really motivated me to give my all on that court today
You played against ex NBA player Jerry Smith, ex German national player Philipp Zwiener who played at the 2008 Olympics as well as top players like Larry Gordon and Brandyn Curry. Does a game like this give you even more incentive to work hard and prove that you can play at a higher level?
It really gave me a lot I’m so easily motivated and this was something I needed something to chase for the year when I’m in the gym practice weight room I’m going to be thinking about what player’s on that level are doing I don’t take the experience lightly not everyday someone gets the opportunity to play against a BBL team I’m taking a lot from the opportunity that I had tonight
What is the state of Lebron James in 2015? Will he ever be mentioned in the same breath as a Michael Jordan?
Lebron is a hybrid player to me. He is Magic and Scottie Pippen wrapped in one and is a player we have never seen before with his physical gifts and understanding of the game and in my opinion will be remembered as one of the greats but Jordan to me revolutionized the game of basketball until this day we all dream to play like Mike did just for a moment he was a savage on the court and dominated the game I mean he is one of the few who never lost in the finals and it says a lot about him he is the G.O.A.T
What was the last movie that you saw?
Ted 2 had me cracking up loved that movie.
Thanks Kris for the chat.

John thanks for taking some time to talk to German Hoops. Where are you at the moment and how has your summer been?
I am currently in California training to get ready for this upcoming season. The summer is going good for myself because I have been able to get take a break and re-focus
In the last year and a half you have been very busy having played in Australia, Chile and Columbia. Do you feel like a mini world traveler already?
Yea, I like to say that I am very cultured. Being able to travel and play basketball has always been a dream of mine.
Cory Cooperwood(I Consider Myself As A Blue Collar Worker That Brings Energy To A Team)

He played at Wright State and as a senior played Wright St. (NCAA) playing 32 games: 9.3ppg, 6.1rpg, FGP: 46.5%, 3PT: 28.6%, FT: 71.2%. He got brief basketball experience in Finland and in the American IBL playing for Dayton before moving to Australia in 2012. In his first season in Australia he played for the Sandringham Sabres (Australia-ABA, starting five): 27 games: 18.7ppg, 9.6rpg, 1.1apg, 2FGP: 49.1%, 3PT: 25.9%, FT: 63.0%. He played the last two seasons for the Stirling Senators (Australia-SBL) and last season played 24 games averaging 18.1ppg, 7.6rpg, 5.3apg, FGP: 53.0%, 3PT: 33.3%, FT: 77.4%. This past summer he played for the Geraldton Buccaneers (Australia-SBL) playing nine games averaging 11,6ppg, 6,4rpg and 1,1apg. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.
Cory thanks for talking to German Hoops. You had no summer in the states as you had a time period between April and May of six weeks were you had off between Hanau and Australia. Was this a time to relax or were you staying in shape at this time?
I came to Australia on vacation to visit my girlfriend. Once in Australia I was asked to play for remainder of the SBL season.
This was your fourth American summer in a row where you played in Australia. Is the extra court competition worth more to you than the boring day to day work out grind during the summer in the States?
I think so, it is fun to play year around. Playing in Australia is a good way to stay in shape and have a vacation at the same time.
This summer you played for the Geraldton Buccaneers (Australia-SBL). How beneficial were these three months and what did you try to work on most on your game in game time situations?
This is a perfect time to practice moves and use them in games in the summer. This is when I decide on what moves I keep or throw away. My main focus has been one on one moves from the perimeter.
You played your first season in Germany last season with the Hebeisen White Wings Hanau (Germany-ProB) playing 21 games and averaging 13.7ppg, 6.8rpg, 1.9apg, 2FGP: 54.0%, 3FGP: 30.8%, FT: 77.4%. How pleased were you with your play in the German pro B?
I felt like it was a solid year. I left Germany with a new understanding of the type of basketball that is played in Europe. I study my game film from this past season and think the improvements of my game will be evident this coming basketball season.
The Hebeisen White Wings had a tough playoff loss to eventual finalist Rostock. What do you think was missing in game three from winning that do or die game? •
I think toughness was the main factor in that game.
Except for a few games against Speyer and game three against Rostock which you might want to forget where you scored only two points, but didn´t get many shots, you scored in double figures in 17 of 21 games. Has consistency always come easy to you on the court?
I feel as if I can consistently play hard, scoring will take care of itself. I try not to think to much during games. That’s when mistakes happened. I just play hard and use my basketball instinct.
You had many good games, but what was your personal season highlight? Possibly the wins against Frankfurt, Wurzburg or Bochum?
I think the third Bochum playoff game would have to be my favorite one. Scoring 24 points and advancing to the next round felt good.
You played the last three summers in Australia, but didn´t have a team in Europe. If you don´t find a team now would you consider playing in the minor leagues in the states this season?
I honestly haven’t gave it much thought about playing in a minor league. I just take it one day at a time and work on my game. Everything else will take care of its self.
If you had to describe yourself on the court and why you could help any team now how would you do it best?
I consider myself as a blue collar worker that brings energy to a team. I am a player that can make an immediate impact when I step on the basketball court. Talking, playing good defense and communicating with my teammates comes natural to me.
What was the most amazing thing that you remember American Cardell Mcfarland doing on the court last season?
The way he plays in the open court on the fast break is amazing. He is a constant threat on the offensive end of the court.
What is the state of Lebron James in 2015? Will he ever be mentioned in the same breath as a Michael Jordan?
The only person that can be compared to Michael is Kobe. I really feel that Lebron is more like Scottie Pippen than Michael Jordan.
What was the last movie that you saw?
Jurassic World.
Thanks Cory for the chat.
Mike Taylor (Poland National Team Coach) I Really Believe In Marcin Gortat And AJ Slaughter But We Are Emphasizing Our Team
Mike Taylor is in his 15th season as a professional coach and currently head coach of the Polish national team and preparing the team for Euro 2015. He is the son of Dick Taylor who was an NCAA coach and assistant with the New York Knicks. Mike Taylor started his coaching career in 2001 with Chemnitz (Germany-2.Bundesliga). In 2002-2003, he got valuable experience in the UK with the Essex Leopards London (United Kingdom). In 2003, he started to coach for ratiopharm Ulm leading them into the Beko BBL in 2006 and Beko BBL playoffs in 2009 before leaving in 2011. He had a record of 101-15 in four years of second Bundesliga basketball. He also has coached Kansas Cagerz (USBL) in the summer time as well as being an assistant for the Czech national team. In 2011 he made the jump back to the states and was an assistant for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers(D-League). He then was head coach of the Boston Celtics D League team Maine Red Claws and they reached the playoffs for the first time in team history. He spoke to German Hoops before Poland played at the Super Cup in Hamburg, Germany.
Mike thanks for talking to German Hoops You are returning back to Germany this weekend to coach Poland at the Super Cup in Hamburg. You spent 8 years as head coach at ratiopharm Ulm and a season at BV Chemnitz. Despite being away from Germany since more than 4 years, is Germany still like your second home?
Thank you Miles. I am very excited to return to Germany for the SuperCup in Hamburg this weekend! Coaching in Germany has been a wonderful part of my life and I am thankful for the upcoming moment as we prepare for the new challenges ahead at Eurobasket. I do spend a lot of time in Germany with my wife Alice and her family in Tubingen so Germany definitely remains my second home.
You will be coaching three games with Poland against Latvia, Germany and Turkey in Hamburg, Germany. What experiences have you had with Hamburg before this weekend and how often have you been there. As head coach with Ulm you never really was more north than in Bremerhaven when you were on road trips. How have you followed the Hamburg Towers recently with their dream of reaching the BBL?
I was in Hamburg once before to watch the Top Four in 2010. Hamburg is a great city and has an excellent sports culture. I think it’s great the Towers are working to build up basketball in the city and wish them and the Koeln Stars success in establishing the game in those two significant German markets.
Orlan Jackman(I’m 100% confident in my ability and work rate to know that I’ll be an impact player if given the chance)
Orlan Jackman is a 27 year old 201cm forward that recently finished his second season with the the NOMA Iserlohn Kangaroos (Germany-ProB)playing 28 games averaging 16.0ppg, 8.4rpg, 2.7apg, 1.9spg, FGP: 50.8%, 3PT: 34.7%, FT: 73.1% He started his basketball career at Seminole State (JUCO).He then played two years at Oklahoma City University (NAIA): 27 games: 13.4ppg, 8.0rpg, 1.4apg, 1.2spg, FGP: 46.3%, 3PT: 30.3%, FT: 69.6%. In 2012 he started his professional basketball career with the London Lions (BBL) playing 30 games: 16.0ppg, 7.7rpg, 1.9apg, 1.1spg, FGP: 51.4%, 3PT: 28.2%, FT: 60.8%. He spoke to German Hoops about basketball.
Orlan thanks for talking to German Hoops. Where are you at the moment and how has your summer been?
Right now, I’m in Thailand exploring the world because of the break we get from basketball and trying a bit of cross training as I heard it does wonders for the body along with rest. Summer workouts have been going extremely well both on and off the court, I love working on my game and seeing my game improve during the summer runs I attend with all the pros back from different countries and off the court I’ve been learning about the game from the coach’s side.
It is mid August and you are still unsigned at the moment. Are you feeling a bit nervous that you are still unsigned?
It’s the nature of the business, supply and demand. The supply outweighs the demand and so things get overlooked but I have faith in my ability as a player and the agency working for me that we will find the perfect fit for me.
The last two years you played with the Iserlohn Roosters moving up from the Regionaliga to the Pro B. Would you have stayed with Iserlohn had they won the German Pro B and moved up to the German Pro A?
That would have been the perfect way to enter the Pro A, with the same team that signed me two years ago. The friendships, the management, the sponsors, the whole organization and I would have loved it.
Was staying in the German Pro B not an option? Obviously you had a great season in the Pro B so making the next step was on the agenda for you?
Every year, I want to improve. Improve my stats, improve the level of competition and mostly improve everything in every aspect of life. So with that being said, it’s only right that I try to improve the league that I would attempt to play in.
Last season for Iserlohn you played 28 games averaging 16.0ppg, 8.4rpg, 2.7apg, 1.9spg, FGP: 50.8%, 3PT: 34.7%, FT: 73.1%. How upsetting was losing 2-0 to SC Rist Wedel when many had predicted Iserlohn as winning the Pro B!
At the start of the season, my teammates read a magazine that said we would be struggling to stay in the Pro B, so from the beginning, no one thought we would even survive in the Pro B. As the season went on and teams saw that we were for real, we had built a level of expectation that we should do something special. SC Rist Wedel came out and done what they had to do and beat us, it was very upsetting, but to see how we grew as a team and with the young players/team we had. It was still something special.
You scored in double figures in 26 of 28 games and except for a 8 point game against Wurzburg and 1 point game against BG Karlsruhe, you dominated every game. What grade would you give your season?
B-… Every team’s end goal should be to want to win a championship! We had a very real opportunity to do that with the team we had. We didn’t and I demand and high level from myself, at all times. I am my own worst critic
Do you see your ex teammate Moritz Krume making the next step in the Beko BBL with Phoenix Hagen?
I’m proud of Mo! (I won’t use his other nicknames) I’ve seen the dedication it takes to be a double licence German player, first hand with the travelling and extra training sessions he has with Phoenix. I hope he gets to show his true potential.
What will always be your fondest memory of two years Mathias Grothe as head coach behind the bench?
I won’t talk about the times he fell over playing soccer or the time I took his money at poker by winning the tournament or the jokes before film session, I think the best memories I have of him would be when we beat BG Hagen in Hagen and just about secured promotion or when we came from 14 points down against Schalke to win in OT! Shout out to Thomas and Yannick!
You had a try out with Pro A team Hebeisen White Wings Hanau. What kind of experience was that for you?
It was just talks between them and my agent, I really don’t know what happened if I’m honest.
How confident are you that you could make the next step in the German Pro A if you were given the chance?
I’m 100% confident in my ability and work rate to know that I’ll be an impact player if given the chance. In the pre season, we played against some Pro A teams and I’m sure I can make a big difference.
After two seasons in Germany, it looks like you may return back to England to continue your career. Is it possible to have a satisfying career in the UK if one would accept it? Would you be happy playing many years in the future in your home country?
Players have made a great living from solely playing in the UK, plus it’s a growing market. I would love to play in my own country, if given the right situation. The right situation is harder to find in the UK than it is aboard.
If you had to sell yourself in a few sentences as to why you could help any team now how would you do it?
My numbers are good, my work rate is better and I’m coachable! Good scorer, great defender and even better teammate.
How does a summer work out day look like for you in the summer of 2015?
Wake up and make something good to eat then go to lift weights, after weight lifting it’s form shooting and ball handling. Once that’s completed it’s lay up drills and mid range jump shots. After that I go home and grab something to eat and then go to an open run where I know the competition will be good to put what I’ve worked on into real game situation.
What is the state of Lebron James in 2015? Will he ever be mentioned in the same breath as a Michael Jordan?
LeBron shouldn’t be compared to MJ because he’s not that type of player, if he should be compared to anyone it should be Magic Johnson because of his willingness to get others involved. But I will say this, Lebron has done things that no one has ever done. They gave the MVP of the finals to the guy that was guarding him.
What was the last movie that you saw?
It was an English movie called ‘Hackney’s Finest’.
Thanks Orlan for the chat
