Jermale Jones Could Never Get Enough Of The Christmas Markets In Germany

One player I really enjoyed covering in Germany over the years was Jermale Jones (185-G-1986, college: Tuskegee). It is hard to believe that in his 14 year professional career, he only played in Germany for 6 seasons. Between 2011-2020, he played 6 seasons in Germany and 2 in Romania and 1 in Luxemburg. Since 2019, he hasn´t played in Germany anymore, but for me personally in a way it felt like he never left. I so him so often in Frankfurt watching his buddy Quantez Robertson play, that it never really felt like he was playing in another country, but he did. Last season he was playing in Switzerland, but somehow found some time in his busy schedule to come to Frankfurt and support Tez during his jersey retirement. He was never a baller who wanted to get to know one country better, but a guy who wanted to explore other cultures. It is no secret that the pay in lower leagues in Germany is not great. So since the 2019 season after paying his dues in Germany, he had had the great experience and balled in countries like Iraq and Thailand and this season is playing in Saudi Arabia for Al Khewaildia (Saudi Arabia-SBL). The pay is definitely better. They don´t celebrate Christmans in Saudi Arabia, but he has celebrated that time of year in other places like Germany, Switzerland, Romania and Luxemburg.

The explosive scorer played 1 season in Bernau and 5 seasons in Lich. One could say that Lich became like a second home for him. Last season he was in Switzerland in Luzern and took in all he could in this so festive time. He like so many other ballers that play overseas has really fallen in love with this time of year. “Christmas times in Germany are so amazing especially all the Christmas markets. It is so amazing for me”, stressed Jermale Jones. The Xmas markets are truly a unique experience in Germany. You have great food that can substitute for a meal as you just can´t stop going back for more. In addition the incredible hand made objects that are made by people can be great Christmas presents. He isn´t a fan of the Xmas markets, but a lover. “When I was in Germany I found myself in the Christmas market every other day. Frankfurt Christmas market was the best of them all to me. I couldn’t get enough of all the people being in the spirit of Christmas and all the food that was there”, remembered Jermale Jones. One can never go wrong visiting a Xmas market in Germany as you will always find something new. The Frankfurt Xmas market belongs to the best in Germany. It is one that has to be on everyone´s bucket list.

As an American, Christmas is a very important time of year for him as well. “It has been very special to me ever since I was a little kid. is very special time of the year because it feels like the spirit comes out of everyone. The giving, the loving and more happy times”, stated Jermale Jones. There is one tradition that he definitely kept overseas. Was it never tempting to undo the tradition and open presents on Christmas Eve the way they do in Germany? “I have never witnessed that”, said Jermale Jones. I can remember 20 years ago that the decorations on houses in Germany was minimal. In 2024, you can see towns in general being a lot brighter than then. But can you outdo the States in the house lights and overall advertisement that is generated each Xmas? “In USA they do it way bigger. People go all out for Christmas in USA. Lights all over there house and yards. I mean the decorations are so amazing and creative”, commented Jermale Jones. Xmas is also a time where the family gets together and share stories of how it was back in the day. He definitely has fond memories of Xmas when he was a kid. “Christmas as a kid was very very special because I knew I had so many gifts coming my way. As a family we got together to open gifts in the morning and then had breakfast and lunch”, added Jermale Jones. He also remembers exactly what his favorite present was as a kid. I´m very sure there weren´t many kids that had the opportunity like he did getting that special kind of toy every year. “My most cherished gift as a kid was every year I got a new bike to ride around the neighborhood”, said Jermale Jones. He definitely had me beat in that category. I definitely had to outgrow my bike and that didn´t happen every year the way I was growing as a kid. Jermale Jones just keeps coming back each year. At the ripe age of 38, he is still playing professionally. I hope he plays many more years. Who knows he might return to ball in Germany as a kind of farewell. If that does happen, he will definitely remember how to get to the Frankfurt Christmas market.

Congrats on the big 90-86 win over TSV Oberaching. How good does it feel going into the break with a win?

It always feels great going to win and before the break is even better.

In the first quarter Cologne was able to establish a 2 point lead, but really broke open the game in the second quarter outscoring them 26-11. What was key for the big lead?

I think in the second quarter we were a lot better at getting stops and running the floor on offense

Oberaching never gave up kept fight and trailed only 68-58. Omari Knox and Peter Zeis hit many three´s. How pesky of a team was Oberaching? They are another team with super chemistry.

They had more older and experienced guys in there team so we figured that they wouldn’t just go away and it was be a fight until the end. They have great chemistry.

In the fourth quarter Oberaching kept chipping away at your lead. But they never got over the hump. Whenever they punched you punched back. What was key in crunch-time for getting the win?

Trying to get good shots and not rush too much. We tried staying in control of the game.

The RheinStars had 5 guys score in double figures. How vital was Luca Michels with his 16 points?

Luca was big time he brought a lot of energy for that game. I feel it helped us so much and gave us as a team a boost.

You led the RheinStars with 22 points. How quickly did you know that you could have a good shooting day?

After the first 3 shots went in felt like I would have a good shooting day. Every shot felt good.

What is your summary of your play in the first half?

Just felt like I was in a good rhythm that’s first half. And had great looks to get my shot off.

The RheinStars are 10-2 together with Leitershoifen. Will these 2 teams compete for North title or do you see another team compete with you?

As of now it looks that way but still have another half of the season so we will see.

Thanks Lamont for talking to germanhoops.com. your playing your third pro season and fourth country after Bosnia, Slovenia and Serbia. Do you feel like a basketball globetrotter?

lol not yet. I haven’t been to a crazy number of countries but the ones I have been to have been alright.

You had a very solid NCAA career, but have had to pay your dues overseas. How big is the chip on your shoulder?

I feel like I am a very good player with some great college experience. I’m grinding to play basketball at the highest level and that’s all it is. You have your ups and you have yours downs.

Is the Pro A the strongest league that you have played so far in your pro career?

I would say the G league is the best I have played in and this is second.

Is it fair to say that this was your break out season?

I have not had my breakout season yet I have not played my best brand of basketball.

You reached the Slovenian Super Cup. You were close to your first chip. What kind of a feeling was it playing in a pro final?

That game was a very good game it was exciting. We played Olympia the game was very close.

How valuable was it battling a guy like 37 year old Uros Nikiolic on a daily basis. Did some more toughness rub off on you?

Uros was probably top 5 strongest players I ever played with. I got my toughness from growing up how, but for sure he was a tough player.

What was Slovenia like? The country is so small. How basketball crazy is that country and did you hear the name Doncic often?

Slovenia was cool. I saw different parts of it and I used to go to the place called Ljubljana which I think is the capital. Doncic name was always brought up he’s one if not the biggest name there.

You played your rookie season with at Spars Realway Sarajevo (Bosnia-Division 1) averaging 12.5ppg, 6.5rpg, 1.3spg. What do you remember being your wake up call to being a rookie where you knew that you were far away from home?

Being is Bosnia honestly was one of my worst years being overseas. Away from my family other personal reasons and just this being my first time not knowing what to expect.

You also played in the G-League as a rookie with College Park and Santa Cruz. How competitive is it battling guys for minutes?

The G league is very competitive and is ran like a business just like any other professional organizations. The players who still want a chance to make it to the NBA play there and everyday is a grind but it was fun.

You were teammates with Jalen Johnson. What memories do you have of him. He has made a big rise in the NBA the last 2 years. Did you see that coming from when you saw him play?

Jalen Johnson was a good player. Every game he played in the g league when I was there he dominated.

How was your time in Santa Cruz? There were also many great talents. Was there a player in your short time that really impressed you?

My time in Santa Cruz was fun playing for those fans and that organization I learned a lot. I played with Moses Moody and he was very good but I think I surprised my own self with how resilient and mentally strong I was to be able to handle diverse situations and how I am able to adapt and play at any level.

What was your best example that you saw in the G-League where you saw that the NBA will always be a business?

The NBA will always be a business just like overseas basketball. I think universally a lot of programs handle the business side of basketball very similar but they pay on time.

Would you ever go back to the G-League or are the NBA chances just to slim?

If it was the right situation I would go back to the G league.

You played at the University of West Virginia (NCAA) from 2015-2019. You had 2 NCAA Sweet 16 runs losing to Gonzaga and Villanova. What run did you enjoy more?

Honestly I can’t even pick which run was more fun because they both taught me so much about winning and teamwork and being up and being down I can’t pick.



You played a game against NCAA powerhouse Kentucky. What memories do you have of playing against great players against Shai Gillgeous-Alexander, Kevin Knox and PJ Washington? Is Shai at his limit or could become the best player in the NBA one day?

Playing against Shai and them dudes was fun it was very competitive and they had a name so the game was much more intense. I think if God wants him to be the MVP of the league he will be.

How valuable was legendary head coach Bob Huggins in your early basketball development? How did he help your game best?

Bob Huggins was like everybody´s father basically he was a very good person and he taught me toughness and just the will to want to win basketball games more than anybody else no matter what it took. Our practices were so hard the games came easy and that’s why we were good. He taught me a lot I would have to write a whole different paper about the things I learned from him and just being in college playing for a legendary coach in general.

Who won a 1-1 in practice you or Esa Ahmad?

Me I don’t lose 1 on 1s

You added a season at Missouri State University (NCAA) averaging 9.6ppg, 3.8rpg, FGP: 57.5%, 3PT: 32.4%, FT: 91.2%. How did head coach Dana Ford give you that last push on the way to a pro career?

Thanks Lamont for talking to germanhoops.com. A tough 79-64 loss in Koblenz. Was it a long bus ride home or could you sleep?

Yea it’s was a tough loss and nobody slept on the bus.

The team has lost 11 games in a row. Does every loss get tougher mentally? How do you cope with it?

It is a long season you can’t get to high or to low. 11 in a row is tough, but we just need to come together as a team and come up with a solution.

The game began well for the Artland Dragons. It was a game of runs in the first quarter. You kept Ty Cockfield at 0 points. How big was the goal to limit him?

We knew Ty is a good player from the film we watched so as a team we wanted to just contain him as best as we could.

The team did a good job on Cockfield. Did you sense he got frustrated early?

I honestly couldn’t tell if he was frustrated or not I was locked in on trying to keep the lead.

In the second quarter the Dragons had a run and led 29-20, but let Koblenz come back on a big run to lead 38-34. Why can´t the team play a quarter of flawless basketball?

Playing flawless basketball is not easy for anybody. We for sure struggle to play “flawless” basketball but it’s not impossible for us.

In the second quarter You and Tajh Green gave important buckets. How do you guys compliment each other best?

Me and Taj just play off of each other’s energy and try to just do best what we do for the team. Be athletic and make big plays.

In the third quarter the EPG Guardians made the turning point of the game and led 56-37. What went wrong in this quarter?

As a team I think we need to stay more poised and not react so much to the outside and just focus on ourselves and see what we do best to keep leads. We need to be able to make smarter decisions at certain points in the game.

In the fourth quarter Artland scored well, but was the team a little tired. They had tried to exhaust the Dragons. Did that happen?

No they didn’t we did it to ourselves.

Buzz Anthony was on triple double course. Do you believe that he will make one this season?

If God has buzz getting a triple double in his plans than it will happen for him.

What did the team learn from this loss?

We just have to watch film and continue with practices and just focus more mentally.

It seems like the bench is thin with scoring power. Do guys like you, Green and Johnson feel pressure to step up?

I don’t feel pressure I get in the gym and workout extra everyday so I prepare myself to be at my best at all times. I’m sure the other have their thoughts on them scoring personally so I can’t speak for them.

I believe all you need is a win to help the team move forward. But it doesn´t get any easier. Is the team defense fixable?

Yes our defense is fixable

You only had 5 points. Obviously more has to come from you after a loss like this? What do you do after a loss? Do watch extra film?

After wins or loses my next off day I pray and I go get extra shots up and lift. I watch Hudl because I get an Instant email from the coach so I can watch the games and certain break downs.

A good friend of mine Joe Asberry is a big supporter of you and Green. He is always pushing you guys with motivation. How valuable has he been for you?

Joe is my guy! Joe is a very inspirational man and he always gives good advice and just keeps us level headed. Can’t over think this stuff it’s basketball he always tells me that. Joe is a great guy.

Your averaging 9/2 stats in the Pro A. Do you see your self stepping up your game?

I can step my game up more we have to just come together as a team and figure out our identity then I think my numbers will rise for sure. Basketball is a team game and I try to focus more on winning than personal narratives.

You have had a pretty stable three pointer in the last years and even shot 43% in Slovenia. How do you see the development of your shot?

I personally feel I am a very good shooter and I have showcased that many times. You can just watch me workout and tell how good I can shoot. I work on my jumper every practice because that can transfer to any level of the game.

You have never averaged more than 12,0ppg since high school. Do you see yourself becoming a 15-16 points scorer in time?

I never averaged 12 since high because my role on my teams have not been to dominate the game scoring wise which I could do easily but my coaches have not needed me to do that. I play my role and do what the coaches want from me. If a team needs me to score 15-20 I could easily do that. I’m tall strong athletic can shoot I bet on myself any day.

Is it fair to say that your defense is still raw. What kind of defender are you now and what kind of defender do you still want to become?

I don´t know if my defense is raw but I think in certain systems certain skill sets of mine show better based on our defensive principals and how we want to guard teams. I can guard 1-5 and feel comfortable I don’t need help guarding anybody I just force people to shoot over and not allow people to blow past me I have a 7’2 wingspan.

What kind of an experience has it been suiting up for the Artland Dragons? What have you enjoyed most from the experience?

Honestly I don’t have anything to complain about. I like being here and I love the fans and my teammates were just in a rough patch. Everybody seems nice and I can use the gym anytime so that’s a plus. Artland is a small town and they love basketball. I enjoy most just being able to wake up everyday and become a better version of me.

What are your new years resolution?

My New Year’s resolution is to just live everyday trying to become a better version on myself every single day.

The EPG Guardians Koblenz Snap 3 Game Losing Streak Defeating The Artland Dragons 79-64

Both the Artland Dragons and EPG Guardians Koblenz were riding losing streaks and the most positive thing going into the game in the CGM arena was that one team would finally have ended their drought. The Artland Dragons had a horrible season last season that were saved at the end to stay in the Pro A and this season the same sort of turn of events have occurred again despite a great start to the season. The Artland Dragons began with a bang winning their first 4 games, but since had a 10 game losing streak under the guidance of ex Koblenz coach Pat Elze. The EPG Guardians Koblenz had riden a 3 game losing streak since their fantastic home win against the Tigers Tuebingen. The EPG Guardians had to find a way to buckle down on defense as they had given up an average of 93 points in the last 3 games. On a cold Sunday afternoon, the game was close at half-time, but in the second half, the EPG Guardians Koblenz stepped up their game finally hitting shots and getting stops helping them control the game. Basketball can be that easy. “This was a super game for us. This game was a lot different from the last one in Giessen. Everybody gave a great effort. We played good defense and shared the ball really well on offense”, stressed EPG Guardians Koblenz guard Jakob Hanzalek. The losing and blues continued for the Artland Dragons as a disastrous third quarter cost them the game. In the fourth quarter with the exception of a few minutes, it was a cake walk for Koblenz. “We began well as our zone worked well. Both teams went on runs. All was ok at the break. Our offense couldn´t execute in the third quarter. We played too wild. Scoring 3 points in 8 minutes won´t help you win”, stressed Artland Dragons assistant coach Markus Jackson. “It was an us week. We had a great week of practice. We didn´t even look at video of the Giessen game and didn´t watch film on Artland until a day before the game. We just focused on us. We looked like a team. We executed well and there was no selfishness. We all trusted each other. Bradley played a great game. We wouldn´t have won without him”, warned Ty Cockfield.

The first quarter showcased a good start by the EPG Guardians Koblenz, only to see the Artland Dragons go on a run to steal the lead at 19-17 after 10 minutes. Koblenz came out punching going on a swift 6-0 lead as Czech Republic forward David Bohm (205-F/C-2001, college: EWU, agency: Octagon Europe) and American Michael Bradly connected on consecutive three´s. Boehm continued to be aggressive and display his versatility scoring a lay in for the 8-3 advantage. Koblenz got sloppy on defense getting fouls allowing Artland to come back via the free throw line trailing only 10-8. Basketball will always be a game of runs as the EPG Guardians jumped out on a 7-2 run to lead 17-10. In the run, Koblenz received good support from their bench as energetic guard Yassin Mahfouz nailed a three point bank shot and Leon Friderici scored on the drive. However Artland didn´t wilt like a flower, but chipped back at the Guardians lead step by step drawing fouls. Young German Thorben Doeding scored as did German big man Robert Oehle. Artland stayed aggressive on defense getting stops and American Taylor Johnson who played at Dartmouth College (NCAA) drilled home a trey in the last seconds. They also did a super job keeping Cockfield to 0 points. “They came back by getting to the free throw line. Cockfield did too little. He had to drive more. We defended well at the guard position”, stressed EPG sport director Thomas Klein.

The second 10 minutes was a tale of 2 quarters as the Artland Dragons rushed out on a big run, but couldn´t hold the momentum as the EPG Guardians Koblenz fought back and stole the lead back leading by 4 points at half-time. Ty Cockfield got Koblenz on the board first finally making his first field goal nailing a three pointer for the 20-19 advantage. The Artland Dragons then had their best phase of the game going on a 10-0 run to lead 29-20. Ex Dragons Rhondorf guard Badu Buck who recently came from Pro B team Berlin Braves went on a scoring spree scoring 5 points. He had a good week of practice and gave big energy hitting a three and some free throws. Artland continued to be aggressive attacking the rim as ex Missouri State forward Lamont West scored as did ex Benedict College (NCAA) forward Tajh Green scored in the paint area. Artland did a great job keeping the Guardians out of the zone and keeping Cockfield at bay. The Guardians didn´t have Boehm on the court as he couldn´t take his momentum from the first quarter and just produced bad offensive decisions. However the EPG Guardians Koblenz came out of their funk after being stopped on 9 straight possession and went on a 19-4 run to lead 38-34 at the break. In the run David Bohm continued to execute at a high rate steering 8 points while Bradley nailed another three pointer and German big man Moses Poelking made a lay in. The most spectacular play of the game occurred on the last play with 5 seconds. Ty Cockfield went coast to coast and it seemed like he would finish himself, but at the last second kicked the ball to the left wing as Jakob Hanzalek made a buzzer beater trey. “At the last second help came for Cockfield as he was already in the air. He saw me in corner. It was a super pass on a great drive. My shot felt good”, stated Jakob Hanzalek. “Boehm got us back in the game. His game gave us more space on offense to open up things”, said Thomas Klein.

In the third quarter came the turning point of the game as the EPG Guardians Koblenz broke open the game going on a massive run and led by 16 minutes after 30 minutes. Moses Poelking made a free throw and Top Pro A assist man Buzz Anthony made a pull up jumper to trail 39-36. Then out of seemingly nothing the EPG Guardians Koblenz shifted up a few gears and ran over the Artland Dragons going on a 17-1 run to lead 56-37. In the run the Guardians executed well from downtown getting 3 three´s from Bradley, ex BBL player Leon Friederici and Cockfield. The Guardians also played inside out basketball getting points in the paint from Boehm and American Ben Stevens while Bradley also added a pull up jumper. Koblenz was in a groove while Bradley continued to fill the Cockfield void who wasn´t as his best with his shooting percentages, but when shots aren´t falling,he simply created for others dishing out 8 dimes in the game. Koblenz also stepped up their defense closing down their bigs with no penetration and forcing many turnovers. Artland stopped the run with a Taylor Johnson trey, but couldn´t make any ground. “We began the third quarter the way we stopped the second quarter. I think like we did the same things, but just with more energy”, commented Jakob Hanzalek. “The third quarter cost us the game. We forced too much and didn´t play smart. When you get hit by a run like that, you lose a little faith”, expressed Markus Jackson.

In the fourth quarter the EPG Guardians managed their lead well and with a few slip ups, finished the game strong and never let up and never allowed them to get under 10 points. Both teams executed well on offense and just punched back and forth. The Artland Dragons got some early three´s from Green and Anthony to cut the Guardians lead to 14, but Koblenz always had an answer. Boehm and Friederici added back to back lay in´s to lead 69-50. Then came a little lapse by the Guardians as they allowed up a 6-2 Dragons run as they were a bit passive. They got free throws from 40 year old Brandon Thomas and 2 lays from the freak athlete Tahj Green to trail 71-58. But the EPG Guardians escaped from their momentary down phase punching back on a 5-0 run to lead 76-58. You can´t totally shut down a Cockfield who contributed 4 points. The Artland Dragons were tired which led to a loss of concentration. Artland got 2 more three´s from Thomas and Doeding, but it was too little to late as Koblenz closed out 2024 with a victory. “We did a job staying focused even when up by 15 points. Bradley and Boehm really stepped up today and played great”, said Jakob Hanzalek. “The fourth quarter was ok for us. We got tired and just didn´t have the strength. We fought to the end though”, stressed Markus Jackson. The EPG Guardians Koblenz were led by David Bohm with 20 points. Ty Cockfield added 17 points and 8 assists while Michael Bradley also scored 17 points while the Artland Dragosn were led by Tajh Green with 16 points while Brandon Thomas added 10 points. The EPG Guardians Koblenz shot 38% from the field and 34% from outside and had 40 rebounds and 17 turnovers while the Artland Dragons shot 33% from the field and 33% from outside and had 33 rebounds and 15 turnovers.

Joe Asberry Will Never Forget Playing 21 During Christmas And Will Always Be The Perfect Santa Claus Anywhere

If you ever met Joe Asberry (196-F-1965, college: SF State) and had a conversation with him, you will notice at latest after 5 minutes just how charismatic this dude is. It really doesn´t mater what you talk about, he will always entertain you. I mean I would personally book this guy as a Santa Claus, because he could play the role perfectly. There are no disagreements from him either. I often ask players who the best Santa Claus would be on a team “ I would be the perfect Santa on Any team”, warned Joe Asberry. I could easily see him being a Santa Claus in malls in the United States. Just imagine reading a massive poster or even better a billboard “Joe Asbery on tour as Santa Claus”. I would definitely buy a ticket. Well maybe he would put me on the guest list (LOL). Imagine Joe being in a movie with an Eddie Murphy, my favorite comedian of all-time. That is an amazing thought. Joe Asberry will never have to make a Santa Claus debut simply because he has done it before in the past. “I have already been Santa Claus in Hannover when we took a team from Stadt Liga to Pro A in Hannover so I have a bit of experience. I was also the Ghetto Santa at Wally´s All Star Games in Bremerhaven so shout out to Wally, he made me a household name in Bremerhaven”, stressed Joe Asberry.

One thing Joe Asberry doesn´t lack is words when he is having a conversation. However once in a while, he gets right to the point with little words like in our Xmas interview, but that’s Ok. Any kind of input from Joe Asberry in speech or written is always memorable. Joe Asberry had a long professional career mostly in Germany and remained here to work as an MC, social worker, coach and mentor. At the moment he is employed by Pro A club Artland Dragons where he is a coach for various team in the youth sector and woman´s sector. Christmas is a part of the year that he really enjoys in Germany and he has a special definition for it. “ Sharing is Caring, that´s how I define Christmas. I appreciate the big Christmas Tree´s, and all the lights. I´s really Beautiful here in Germany”, said Joe Asberry. The Oakland native has celebrated Xmas on various continents and for him everywhere is home for Xmas. When it comes to where he will celebrate this year, he is of the spontaneous kind. “ Christmas in Artland, Berlin,or Las Vegas is all the same to me, it´s Magnificent. I´m not sure where I´m going to Celebrate Christmas this year yet. I don´t like to jinx myself, so I´ll let it touchdown first”, expressed Joe Asberry. He also has a fancy of visiting Christmas markets in Germany, but one kind of special gift, he still hasn´t been able to find at one. “I enjoy the Christmas Markets for sure. I can´t say I saw any good gifts. I didn´t see anything Basketball related! LOL”, laughed Joe Asberry. Since having witnessed Xmas in USA and Germany, he definitely stays away from the comparisons between both countries during the holiday season. “I don´t ever compare Christmas to America. If home isn´t where your Heart is, you might need to get your HEAD EXAMINED! LOL! You can´t compare Christmas in America to Christmas in Europe. It´s much more commercial in America, the idea is to make sells”, expressed Joe Asberry.

One Xmas tradition that he carried over from USA to Germany was having that pajama feeling in the morning and then getting down to business with the gifts. “I always open all of my presents on Christmas Day”, smiled Joe Asberry. Even if his childhood was a long time ago, he still has fond memories of that time in the bay area. “Christmas with my Family was beautiful, good food, and a lot of presents. My most cherished moments were playing games of 21 in front of our house. My big brothers and big homeys would destroy me. That´s why I´ll never have a problem creating my own shot. When you hoop vs multiple defenders when you´re a kid, you won´t play like a ROBOT once you turn PRO or when your young guys on your team challenge Coach Joe to 1´s ! LOL”, stressed Joe Asberry. It is also no surprise that his favorite present as a kid is very much basketball related. “My most cherished present was my Basketball from my Big Homey Russ Boogie and my Big Bro Michael”, stated Joe Asberry. The season has been a struggle thus far for the Artland Dragons. The season began so well with a rapid 4 game winning streak, but then out of nowhere an annoying losing streak commenced which led to the dismissal of head coach Vincent Macauley. Pat Elzie took over and the losing continued. Currently the ex easyCredit BBL team is riding a brutal 10 game losing streak. The best Xmas gift for the club would be a win on the 29th od December in Koblenz against the up and down EPG Guardians. Eddie Hunt(Krivbas Kryvyi Rih) Continues To Grow As A Player As Playing In The Ukraine Is The Closest Thing To Normal That You Can Get To

Eddie Hunt (201-C-1996, college: Limestone) is a 28 year old 201cm forward that was born in Topeka, Kansas that is currently playing with Krivbas Kryvyi Rih (Ukraine-Superleague). He began his basketball career at Highland Park High School. He then played two seasons at Barton County Community College (JUCO) playing a total of 57 games. He then finished at Limestone College (NCAA2). He has gained professional experience in Mexico, Argentina, Italy, Estonia, Portugal and Georgia. He spoke to germanhoops.com about basketball.

Tha Eddie for talking to germanhoops.com. The last time we spoke was in the summer of 2022. Has time flown by since then?

The pleasure is all mine Miles and thanks for your time of course. Man does time fly! Seems like a few days ago.

After we spoke you played the 2022-2023 season with Alianca Sangalhos (Portugal-Liga Betclic) averaging 10.6ppg, 6.1rpg, 2.3apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 47.1%, FT: 66.7%, in Jan.’23 moved to Gtuni (Georgia-A League) averaging 7.8ppg, Reb-2 (7.2rpg), 1.2apg, FGP: 42.3%, FT: 66.7%. Despite only playing 7 games in Portugal, would you say that that was your break out season?

Correct I started the 2022/23 season with Sangalhos competing against Champions Level competition. My personal goals weren’t fulfilled but doesn’t take away from the fact I played well, played consistent in the time I got the chance to suit up. So I would humbly agree that it was a break out season even though I have so much more to give.

You didn´t win a game in Portugal. Was that a reason why you went to Georgia?

Once I was released from Portugal I decided to at least find a place to stay in shape and compete, and not take the rest of the season off. My short time in Georgia I met a lot of great people.

You sent a message right in your first game scoring 19 points. How important was that game at that stand point in your career? It must have been a big confidence booster.

It definitely was a favorite of mine going against FC Porto. It wasn’t going to be easy at all but to all the hoopers around the world when you get into that “mode” nothing can stop you and just having fun while doing so. The basketball rim seemed like an ocean for me that night. Looking forward to having many more games like that game. I came into the season playing well. During the preseason games I was averaging around 17ppg 7rpg. I had a big summer in Cleveland with my trainers that prepared me leading up to a breakout season in Portugal-Liga Betclic.

You then went to Georgia. What kind of an experience was that? You were the second best rebounder in the league. How tough was it not only remembering who was who from the Georgian players, but how to pronounce their names? Did you find nicknames for them?

Hahah lucky all the guys spoke great English, and had semi English names just the last names were nearly impossible for me to pronounce. Nicknames saved me the confusion at first but once you spend enough time just learn to remember.

Last season you returned back to Portugal playing with Ginasio Olhanense (Portugal-Proliga) averaging 10.4ppg, 8.1rpg, 1.5apg, FGP: 44.2%, 3PT: 38.5%, FT: 65.0%. Did Portugal become like a second home to you?

Portugal holds a special place in my heart. I love the country the people, the level of play list goes on. I don’t think people would be surprised if I was to play some time in Portugal again in the future.

How tough was this season? Again you lost many games, but this time many in crunch-time. What did you learn about yourself that season?

This season was more of a mental focus having things done a certain way in the champions league and making the transition to the 2nd league was a little more having to figure out as I went along and adjusting a lot. I spent a short time there due to an injury called “gophers elbow” and it was a nagging no injury in my shooting arms so it was impossible for me to perform so I sat out from January- end of season.

Despite playing in the second league, how do you feel did your game grow that season?

Being able to expand my range and be consistent was a start learning to stay in the moment. We had a great SG Fredrick Sims and spent some time in the NBA G-league and summer league so I was around other professionals who I could learn from and push each other in practice and so on. Growing into a consistent player was a big lesson taken from that season.

This season you moved to Krivbas Kryvyi Rih (Ukraine-Superleague). Was it easier to get a job in a place where there is a war?

This season I am playing in the Ukraine SuperLeague, I received the offer late June I recall but was on vacation in Australia so wasn’t to much of a focus for me at the time of where I was going to play. I was getting offers in South America at the time as well and I am familiar with Argentina so that was the first thought I had was if I wanted to stay in the Europe side or Latin America. Talking with a friend who played here last season, he gave me some advice on what’s going on here how life is and the level of play here. At first I was worried because of all the things I saw on television about the war just yeah how could you go wasn’t possible. Getting the advice I was given I took a chance and it has been great here for me, playing well avg 12.1ppg 8rpg and shooting 47.1% from the 3. And mostly we are winning games! In the middle of the pack in the league and looking forward to keep getting better.

What is it like being in the Ukraine in 2024. Is that war presence still there?

Being here in Ukraine has been the closest thing to normal that you can get. People are still working, walking the streets, shopping etc having their coffee Living their lives.

Was it a tough decision to go there? Family and friends must have warned you not to go and be scared for your safety.

Coming to Ukraine wasn’t too much of a worry for me. Maybe it would have been for others but my only focus was playing basketball and after hearing about the season before being a success and the day to day life here made it a peaceful decision. My family of course had thoughts and concerns but they trust me and my judgment.

The team is around 500. How would you describe the first division Ukraine to the 2 leagues in Portugal. Is this the best league that you have played in?

Yes, right now we are in the middle of the pack with good momentum. To compare wouldn’t be fair to either side I think the basketball world knows how tough Portugal first division is. There is a lot of talent and experience. 3 teams that compete in EuroCup speaks for itself. Ukraine is a league with talent mixed with hunger every night. A league with a lot of bigs along with mature guards and forwards. You must come to compete and fight every game. Portugal 2nd division I would say it’s a lot of younger guys finding a way to get on the court and get better. It is more of a development league for first division. Import talent was pretty fair around the league. If I had to rank I would say Portugal Betclic 1, Ukraine 2nd and Portugal 2nd division is 3rd. All good leagues but if I had to rank there you have it.

Have guys like Braxton Lovings and Jimmy Kelly become like brothers for you? One could call you the JUCO trio?

We all share a great bond and look at each other as brothers. Jimmy Kelly is new to the team. He’s just arrived but him and Braxton played together in college so they have a good relationship. I live alone and spend a lot of my time reading or writing while I’m home but at practice and game day we mesh really well and make it easier for each other. Both are great guys that will have great s on and off the court.

What have you appreciated most about their games and characters?

I haven’t gotten a chance to suit up with Jimmy yet but I love his aggression on both ends and the same with Braxton both young and hungry guards that defend the ball really well.

You have really had good games this season. How has your game grown there?

I have been staying the course and making sure I stay in the gym stay healthy, get in the gym a n hour before everyone gets there, and get a good workout and stay a hour after getting shots and movements in learning myself and what I’m good at has helped me this season. And I continue to build off of this.

You are an undersized big. What are you doing to continue to improve your defensive game so you can flourish against bigger bigs?

I’m playing the 4. I’ve been a 4 man pretty much every team I’ve played on. My physicality allows me to bang with taller bigs being able to play inside out or outside in depending on what is best for the team. To answer your question I would say my strength and long arms. Being 6’8 225 with 7’0 wingspan makes guarding taller forwards not an issue.

How did you celebrate Xmas this year?

This year I spent Christmas cleaning my apartment and talking with my girlfriend and family just enjoying the small things in life. Also some new Netflix series came out so helped pass the time.

What new year resolutions do you have for 2025?

2025 resolution to be a better man than I was in 2024.

Kelvin Omojola Will Never Forget Begging His German Mom To Open Presents On Christmas Eve In The States And Feasting On Dampfnudeln In Germany

One of the benefits I had as a kid was being able to open presents on Christmas Eve. I was born in the States to German parents and I never ever in my life opened up gifts on the 25th in the morning. I always loved the time in school leading up to Xmas and I could tease all my friends in school that I would got to sleep with a big grin on my face while the other kids would be trying to fall asleep having the night be like an eternity. Dragons Rhondorf second year man Kelvin Omojola grew up in the States and also had German roots as his Mom was German. However he wasn´t as lucky as I was. That USA tradition was kept up for the Omojola family. “When you do it in Germany I prefer the gift opening on Christmas morning, it just feels nostalgic to me. But trust me, especially being a kid, I begged my mom for us to open gifts on Christmas Eve! Being an adult now, I don’t care at all on receiving gifts but rather giving gifts”, stressed Kelvin Omojola.

Kelvin Omojola (183-G-1997, college: Northwest) is a 27 year old point guard that is playing his fourth professional season and fourth in Germany. He played his rookie season with the Ahorn Camp BIS Baskets Speyer (Germany-ProB) averaging 15.3ppg, 2.7rpg, 3.3apg, 1.7spg, FGP: 43.4%, 3PT: 37.3%, FT: 71.8%. In his second season he gained experience with PS Karlsruhe Lions (Germany-ProA) averaging 3.1ppg. He took a step back last season to the Dragons Rhoendorf (Germany-ProB)n averaging 12.7ppg, 3.1rpg, Assists-2 (6.1apg), 1.6spg, FGP: 49.4%, 3PT: 30.5%, FT: 79.5%. He led the team to the Pro B title and wants to repeat this season. He is a guy that has seen Xmas in Germany and a person that really believes in it´s values. “I would define Christmas as the season of giving as well as spending time with the people you love the most. Christmas has always been important to me. From the Christmas NBA Games to spending time with loved ones, it’s my favorite holiday by far”, stressed Kelvin Omojola. Last season he was in Bad Honnef for Xmas and enjoyed it again this season there. “It was very calm and quiet which I enjoyed”, said Kelvin Omojola. It is no surprise that he has had a mainstay in Germany the last years. Who can resist the Christmas markets in Germany? “I’ve been very fortunate enough to spend Christmas with my fiancé and my family in Germany. The weather and the Christmas Markets are the best things about Christmas time in Germany. It’s a lot different than celebrating in Las Vegas. The Xmas markets are mandatory! That is easily one of the best things about Christmas time in Germany. The nicest gift I’ve seen at the Christmas Market would have to be the variety of food and drinks! The dampfnudeln, glühwein, the different crêpes. You can’t go wrong with any of it”, stated Kelvin Omojola. ´He has experienced Xmas in both countries and he sees a big difference to both cultures. “Christmas is a huge holiday in both the states and Europe. I’m huge on family. Christmas in Germany is a lot more family oriented due everything being closed. It forces you to spend time with your loved ones. In the USA, specifically Las Vegas, everything is open! You spend a couple hours with your family and then it almost another day. I enjoy both though”, commented Kelvin Omojola.

The Las Vegas native remembers his childhood at Christmas in the states as well as I do stats of certain players and he has very special memories from then that still dance and swirl in his head today. “I remember spending time with my parents and sisters, my grandma, basketball tournaments, watching the NBA games with my Dad, everything. That quality time is the reason why I love Christmas so much to this day. What my family did special was on Christmas Eve started with having a light Christmas dinner and then Christmas Day we would open presents! After exchanging gifts we would watch the NBA games and just spend time with each other. I really do miss those moments”, expressed Kelvin Omojola. He is all about family and his fondest memory doesn´t have to do with presents. “The last time my Grandma came to Las Vegas and spent time with my family and I. She flew all the way from Munich so to be able to celebrate Christmas with her one final time before she passed was amazing”, added Kelvin Omojola. Every kid remembers their favorite gift. I remember getting a race track from Mattel toys and he also has a favorite. “A FIT BMX Bike! I’ll never forget it Miles”, stated Kelvin Omojola.

Basketball wise it hasn´t been the best of seasons for the Dragons Rhondorf. They have been very up and down and were sporting a losing streak of 4 of their last 5 games, but cleaned that up beating rising team Speyer shortly before Xmas. Hopefully for the club, this win was a wake up call to the second half of the season. They played as a team again and had their best defensive performance of the season. Defense had been their sore point. Maybe now they will develop a defensive identity. I asked him what would be the second best Xmas gift after that win. He misunderstood my question as I meant basketball related, but as Steve Harvey would say on Family Feud during fast money, “Good Answer”, I agree with him. “If my fiancé was here celebrating with me easily. Thankfully, I have my mom and younger sister flying in to celebrate Christmas with me, so that’ll be great”, said Kelvin Omojola. I would have picked Danas Kazakevicius as the best team Santa Claus. We both do lay on the same wave length with certain topics. “ Definitely either Danas or Antonio Pilpovic lol. Make sure you tell Antonio I said that”, laughed Kelvin Omojola. He had a great rookie season in Germany with Speyer and I remember him hitting Frankfurt in that season for 31 and 27 points. He had his break through season that allowed him the next step to the Pro A. In that last game against his ex team, he faced off against Virginia Wesleyan legend DJ Woodmore. He has had a major impact on his career. “I love DJ. Definitely a mentor for me both on and off the court. Everyone knows he’s a great player on the court with a high IQ and skill level. But off the court? He’s a genuine guy, hilarious, smart. DJ is of my top 3 favorite teammates I’ve ever played with in my basketball career”, warned Kelvin Omojola. I have 3 fun facts about them both. “Both have great smiles, both would pose greatly as Santa Clauses and both are great leaders. Merry Xmas Kelvin and DJ.

It was pretty cool. We got a get together with all the import guys who didn´t have family here. We all brought food and had a great time together.

What was your coolest Xmas experience in Germany? Was it the Xmas markets?

Most definitely the Christmas markets. I love how Germany celebrates the holidays. It seems like whenever there is a holiday, they celebrate it for the whole month. The way Germans celebrate holidays are dope and unique.

Koblenz has the incredible festival on Ehrenbreitstein with lights which I´m visiting tomorrow. Were you able to see that this year?

I actually have not been there. But I hope to get there sometime tomorrow.

Congrats on getting a contract extension. You’re a guy that could play in many places and the Guardians are struggling. It isn´t self-evident that you resign. You must have a lot of love for this organization?

I most definitely have a lot of love for the organization. I have a lot of love for Thomas Klein and the city. I have a great relationship to Thomas. As soon as he told me how I would fit in in the future of the club, it was a no brainer. I´m very happy here. It is a great environment.

I know Thomas Klein really adores your game. Did he have to do much convincing for you to stay?

Not to much convincing from his part. I want us to remain in the Pro A. At the moment, we are doing fine. We have to find a way to put it together.

The team is 5-9. Why is it so up and down?

It has to do with us. We are still trying to find our identity and how to put it all together. We want to make a run. If it isn´t enough for the playoffs, then we want to make a run to feel good. We want to make hard for teams to play us and at the same time have fun.

The crazy thing is that the 4 wins out of the 5 were difficult crunch time wins by not more than 4 points. You lost only one close game to Nurnberg at home. The team definitely knows how to win at the wire.

The close wins we had are really a testament to how hard we work during the week. We really dig deep. Even in games where we lost, we worked hard during the week. We have not had more than 2 days in a row off this season. We feel comfortable when games go down to the wire.

The team had 2 very good defensive performances against PS Karlsruhe and against Tuebingen. But since the Tuebingen win, the team has averaged allowing 93 points per game in the last 3 weeks. Why is the team struggling so much on the defensive end?

I think it´s all about guys trying to learn coaches philosophy. It isn´t easy for the younger players to adapt to his philosophy. Guys are attacking it and studying film. It´s all about us playing his and our game at the same time.

How have you seen the development of rookie Michael Bradley? Have you taken him under your wing?

I have taken him under my wing. I try to give him as much wisdom as possible. I´m helping him with leading the team, finding his spots better and how to put his team in a better situation to win. I keep motivating him every day.

How have you seen the play of David Boehm and Ben Stevens? They bring important things to the team and are different players. Shouldn´t they be bringing more production to the team?

Most definitely they can give more especially David. We can get more out of him. He is so versatile. He has a great game and has the opportunity to have a long career. We want both guys to step up as much as possible and capitalize off their games. Ben is a great guy and a real motor. He could get a few more rebounds and demand the ball more in the post.

Let´s talk about your game. Would you be more happy with your game if the team were in fourth or fifth place?

Oh yes. I would be more happy if we were winning more. I´m not selfish. It´s not about me. The accolades look great, but I want to win more. I could average 15 points per game and be in third place. That would be amazing.

I personally think your leading the team really well, but the team is losing. How do you deal with your situation mentally. Your playing well and doing all you can for the team, but it still loses too much?

I see myself as being 1 player on the team. I´m only human. If I get double and triple teamed, then other guys have to step up. Of course it is frustrating when you look good, but still not enough to win. Longevity is a goal of mine to help rebuild this program and see guys compliment me so I can blossom even more. I will bring even more to the team this season. I´m mentally strong. We are having growing pains at the moment. For me it´s about stacking great days, leading the guys and motivating them.

Your 4/25 shooting in the last 2 games. Does that gnaw at you mentally or is your self-confidence so huge that you know you will break out on Sunday against Artland?

I will Break out on Sunday. A shooting slump is part of the game. I had 8-9 great games and then 1-2 games where I struggled. I mean sometimes you have games where the shots just don´t fall even though I still got to my spots. I´m not worried at all. Sometimes, it does get in my head, but I´m still going to take the same shots.

Do you fear that clubs will scout you better in the second half of the season?

They already have. It began after the first game. The Pro A is a great league. Teams are already getting on me. Team´s best defender guard me every weekend. Teams are defending me hard and trying to get to my spots before I do. I´m an elite scorer and It´s my job to figure it out.

When the team is losing the way it is now, do you put more pressure on yourself pressuring yourself to have to do more?

Yes I do. That is every elite player´s job. It´s only natural for guys like that to put pressure on themselves. When we lose, I put blame on myself and when we win, it´s always the team that did it. That is what a leader does.

The EPG Guardians next clash against the Artland Dragons. They have had a crazy season. They began on fire with 4 wins, but now are riding a 10 game losing streak. Is the team thinking too much now on their horrible season last season?

Yes I think so. Guys got tight after some loses and the confidence went downhill. That changed their perspective about the league, I honestly think the Pro A is top 2 in the world in the 2nd divisions.

Do you feel like the EPG Guardians won´t underestimate them? You swept them last season.

We won´t underestimate them. We lost 3 games in a row. I won´t let them underestimate them. We have to be us and fly around.

How much are you looking forward to battling pass first point guard Buzz Anthony? He leads the league in assists and steals.

These kind of matchups are always fun. I really strive for games like that. I have more fun in games like this. I don´t think that he will get so many steals.

The Artland Dragons have a talented offensive team, but no identity on defense. What will be key to getting the win?

We have to attack. We play defense. We have to put our offense together. I will be in attack mode and bring team with me. We will be aggressive on both sides of the ball.

Calvin Wishart Will Be In Athens Greece This Christmas But Will Never Forget The Xmas Eve Dinners And Broom Ball In Minnesota As A Kid

One of the great traditions in Germany are the Christmas markets. As a German/American and having lived in Germany now for 20 plus years, I have seen many incredible Xmas markets and it definitely never gets old. I have seen my share of pretty ones like in Frankfurt and Limburg and even got rid of some money for nice Christmas presents in an old castle named Arenfels. The place was perched high on a hill overlooking the Rhein River. The view was simply breathtaking even under the stars. For American ballers in Germany for the first time, visiting a traditional German Xmas market is something on every guys bucket list. It wasn´t any different for second year pro Calvin Wishart (188-G-1999, college: UCSB) who is playing this season in the Pro B for VR Bank Wuerzburg Baskets Akademie (Germany-ProB). But for him walking around in Wurzburg and taking in the great atmosphere, delicious food and hand made trinkets at a Xmas market wasn´t enough, he just had too experience so much more. “I have been able to visit a few of them yes I have been able to go to some in Munich, Frankfurt, Landshut and Würzburg.”, stated Calvin Wishart. The Christmas time for him like so many other ballers overseas is a very vital time of the year. “Christmas is a really important time to be with family and friends. I think that’s the most important thing. Christmas is a magical time of year full of spirit, gift giving, and love. Through the winter time, it being cold and dreary, it’s something to bring up your spirits and enjoy what winter brings with friends and family”, said Calvin Wishart.

The Minnesota native already witnessed Christmas last season as a rookie in Portugal and this season has a massive luxury. In the Pro B, he has a 2 week break. If he would be playing in the easyCredit BBL or Pro A who play during the holidays, he would have to remain in Germany which would still be nice, but this season, he will experience a new kind of Xmas. “I will be celebrating Christmas in Athens, Greece this year with my best friend Anders Nelson”, commented Calvin Wishart. But he will have some interesting stories to tell in Athens about the German tradition as well. For him the Christmas markets remain one of the nicer things, but he also witnessed other things. “I appreciate how people are still outside. The Christmas markets are a good time for people to congregate and share a warm mug and conversations. We had a Christmas party with the Würzburg organization with all the guys and families of the players”, expressed Calvin Wishart. In Germany one opens up presents on Christmas Eve and in the States on the 25th of December in the morning. Would he ever change the tradition if in Germany? “I’m a firm believer that presents should be opened on Christmas morning after Santa has dropped them off via chimney access”, added Calvin Wishart. He also believes that the marketing of Christmas is just as big in Germany as in USA, but believes that one thing is done better here than at home. “I think it’s more decorated here in Europe. Even in Portugal. The towns here do a good job of dressing the city up in Christmas! obviously I’m away from family here in Europe during the holidays so it’s a bit harder, and I have fonder memories of Christmas in Minnesota”, said Calvin Wishart.

I can imagine the American will tell some childhood stories in Greece when he meets new people. Every American has their special memories of how Xmas was as a kid and it isn´t any different for him. “Christmas as a kid was easily the best time of year. On Christmas Eve, my family would host both sides of the family at our home in Buffalo, MN. Mom and dad would put together a big spread of food and drinks for 20-30 people. My dad started the tradition, “Prime Rib Dinner at Wishart’s Tavern” when I was young and we did that every year. We would go to candle lit church service on the eve around 10 pm, come home and sleep and wake up on the morning to open gifts. Growing up my parents really spoiled us with the best gifts”, remembered Calvin Wishart. He also will never forget his favorite gift as a kid. “When I was in 1st grade Santa brought me a PSP, a PlayStation portable. I have it to this day and it’s my most prized possession”, said Calvin Wishart. But nothing is nicer than having the whole family assembled around the fire place on Christmas eve as the dinner is being prepared. There are so many special traditions in families and it isn´t any different with family Wishart. “The Christmas Eve dinners when the whole family would be at our house. We’d also play “broom ball” on our neighbors ice rink. Which is basically skate less ice hockey. With long paddles and a like a handball”, remembered Calvin Wishart. But he still has one order of business before he flies to Greece and that is playing one last game on December 21st. Wurzburg has had an amazing turnround after losing it´s first 6 games, it now has won 5 in a row thanks to the great leadership of head coach Alex King and the dynamic duo of Hannes Steinbach and Calvin Wishart. “A good road win at Bayern Munich going into the break bringing the streak to 6”, smiled Calvin Wishart who believes teammate Eddy Rantz would moonlight bets on the team as a Santa Claus. Unfortunately their winning streak ended in Munich. Now he and the team have a weeks to get their batteries recharged for the second half of the season.
