Murat Didin(Gloria Giants Duesseldorf) Duesseldorf Will Be A Top BEKO BBL Team In The Future

Murat Didin is in his first full season as head coach of TheGloria Giants Duesseldorf. He coached the Deutsche Bank Skyliners for four and reached the playoffs each season. In 2005, his team lost a hard fought five game series battle to Bamberg in the BBL finals and in 2008, he lost in the semi finals to The Telekom baskets Bonn and in 2009 in the Quarterfinals to eventual BBL champion EWE baskets Oldenburg. He had a 12 year playing career from 1970-1982 in Turkey. He played 12 times for the junior national team and four times for the senior national team of Turkey. He started his coaching career in 1982. He has coached 14 teams in his career including VIP Rimini in Italy and top Turkish teams Galatasaray, Fenerbache, Ulker Istanbul and Besiktas Istanbul. He took some time to talk with German Hoops after the 97-70 loss in Bremerhaven.

48 hours ago, You signed five new players and three players had to pack their bags. Was this not a risky decision to do on the day of the first game in Bremerhaven?

No I don´t think it was risky. We were looking for the right players since the start of preseason. The season is long and there are still 33 games more to play. Jamaal Tatum didn´t play in the first game. We will be ok.

Did Duesseldorf get some extra money from a magician late so you could add some more high profile players?

Yes we had a magician give us money. Lol. No actually we got some money from our sponsor Gloria which enabled us to get guys like Steven Wright or Ransford Brempong. We are happy about getting Olumuyiwa Famutimi who recently played for the Canadian National team at the World Championships in Turkey. He is a big talent. We got Steven Wright, because Deandre Haynes is not completely healthy.

I told you before the start of last season to get Steven Wright to Frankfurt. Now you finally signed him. Did you remember my words?

Of course, I remember your words. Last year, I was able to get Aubrey Reese and if I have the chance to get him then it is obvious I get him. Wright is a consistent player with space to improve.

How happy were you coaching your first game for Duesseldorf in Bremerhaven?

I had four years of success in Frankfurt, but I have to say that I am very happy in Duesseldorf now. Duesseldorf is a sports town with a good infrastructure a good place to live. Even though I have only been here a short while, it feels like I have been here years. I honestly believe that Duesseldorf can become a well respected and high level team in the BEKO BBL and we want to get better step by step each year. We have a new CEO with Fabian Hedderich and with Actori another sponsor that is a well known company and will help us move up as an organization in the next years. I think with new sponsors and the chance of new ones coming, the Gloria Giants Duesseldorf will become a top BEKO BBL organization in the future. We just have to go step by step.

Duesseldorf lost the first game in Bremerhaven 96-70. Duesseldorf was behind 50-36 at halftime. What were the biggest problems in the first 20 minutes?

In the first half, we almost played without a playmaking effect. Haynes is weak at the moment due to physical problems. Wright had jet lag and we couldn´t lay Tatum because he had arrived shortly before the game.

In the third quarter, Bremerhaven went on a 15-4 run and that seemed to decide the game early. Why did Duesseldorf get off to a bad start in the third quarter?

We had four turnovers in this stretch and when you are already trailing, getting more turnovers won´t help you get back into the game.

What were the biggest problems for the Gloria Giants Duesseldorf against Bremerhaven?

We were weak in the paint and we could of rebounded better.I think if we would have had a healthy Haynes and had a bit more hustle that we might have had better chances in this game. Lossing this game with so many new players is a normal thing and then against a top team like Bremerhaven. We have to digest this loss and just look ahead.I think once the whole team practices more we will become better.

Frankfurt lost a close game to Oldenburg 70-67. What was your reaction to this score?

It is no secret that Oldenburg is always strong at home. It will be hard for any team this eason to win in Oldenburg. Kamil Novak called me before our game and wished me luck, but we needed a miracle to win with a hurt Haynes. I also wished Kamil a lot of luck, but I guess it didn´t help at the end.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

Salt with Angelina Jolie.

Thanks coach for chat.
